The proud team with the work of the last 8 months
“gotthard” revealed
On Friday May 20th 2016, AMZ
Racing revealed its tenth race car “gotthard”. In the wind tunnel building of
the Sauber F1 Team in Hinwil the public was amazed by the combination of
innovation and a decade of Formula
Student know how. Present were the
team’s sponsors, family members and
fellow Formula Student teams. During
the course of a short presentation, the
newly developed concepts and innovations were presented. With “gotthard”,
AMZ was able to make a great technological step forward. The goal: to build
the fastest Formula Student race car in
the world.
The radically revised packaging solution of the electric racer enables a diffusor integrated into the CFRP one-piece
monocoque. Two accumulator boxes,
one in front of, the other behind the
driver seat, provide the necessary energy to drive the four wheel hub motors.
They deliver 54 horse power each, at a
weight of just 3.4 kg, propelling “got-
thard” from 0 to 60 mph in just under
two seconds.
A milestone in development was
achieved in the domain of the tires. For
the first time in AMZ history, tires featuring a compound and design tailored
to the vehicle’s main concept were developed in cooperation with Continental
AG. The new tires provide more grip, an
improved temperature behaviour and
increased driveability.
The suspension is based on three
springs per axle, among them a socalled “heave spring” suspending the
aerodynamic loads. This allows a softer
setup of the single-wheel springs – mechanical grip is increased. The magneto-rheological dampers, used for the
third year in a row, allow for adaptive
damping using an intelligent controls
system. Ground unevenness on track
can be adapted to in a matter of milliseconds.
“gotthard’s” controls system integrates a traction control for optimal
wheel slip, a torque vectoring system
for high agility as well as a sophisticated
energy management system for stamina in the endurance race.
The total weight of the vehicle comes
in at 172 kg. At 216 horsepower, a ratio
of 1.26 HP/kg results, an eye-watering
value that even eclipses super sports
cars and enables breath-taking accelerations.
Now the testing phase is ahead. Day
for day, “gotthard’s” speed and reliability
shall be increased, with the goal to build
on past years’ achievements. The first
Formula Student competition of AMZ’s
season is hosted from July 14th until
July 17th at the mecca of motorsports –
the famous Silverstone.
