The “49er”*
Over 150 years have passed since the “49ers”
scoured the streambeds and hillsides of
California in search of gold.
Gold was originally discovered in California at
Sutters Mill on January 24th, 1848.
Our new lantern series, called “The Sutters Mill
Collection” is based on similar lanterns used
during this period of our California history.
We have accurately reproduced antique Dietz oil
lanterns, both “hot blast” and “cold blast”, and
made them UL approved and ready to mount on
today’s homes.

The “49er”*
The “49er” is an exact copy of an original Dietz
“hot blast” oil lantern. By the mid 1800’s, in an
effort to generate more light from oil lanterns,
side tubes were added to direct hot air from the
flame up the side tubes and blast the heated air
back down on top of the flame. This concept
greatly increased the light output of oil lanterns
and thus “hot blast” lanterns were invented. The
“49er” is UL approved for 1-60 watt lamp. The
chimney can be ordered in clear or frosted glass.

Natural Rust Finish:
All Sutters Mill lanterns are available in a natural rust (NR) finish. We chemically accelerate
the natural rust process and create a beautiful
rust patina finish which is then
coated with a clear lacquer to protect and
seal the finish.
Natural rust is best suited for indoor use and
should not be used outdoors unless protected
from the direct weather by a porch or
patio cover.

The “Pioneer”*
Our “Pioneer” lantern is a copy of an original
“cold blast” oil lantern. In the late 1800’s, a new
idea was developed to again try to increase the
light output of oil lanterns. A larger vent was
added at the top of the lantern to allow outside
cold air to mix with the hot air coming up from
the flame. This additional cold air increased the
rush of air over the flame, and again increased
the light output of the lantern.
The “Pioneer” is UL approved for 1-60 watt
lamp. The chimney can be ordered in clear or
frosted glass.

We can modified Sutters Mill lanterns to accommodate custom and commercial projects.
The large chandelier # 3369 was built for the
Boy Scouts Lost Valley project.
The large custom lantern, # 2-07 was designed
for the front columns of a gated community in
Payson, Arizona.
The arrow wall sconce, # 642 was designed to
be used with custom headboards at the
Ahwahee Hotel in Yosemite, California.
