The automotive industry continues to change at a rapid rate –
possibly faster than ever before.
Trying to keep up with advancements can be a difficult and an
expensive task – and that’s where
Auto TECH expo comes into play.
In addition to having many of
the best parts, equipment and
service suppliers exhibiting at
Auto TECH expo, we also have
technical and management seminars covering some of the most
pertinent topics that shops are
asking for. In addition, our seminar instructors are veteran trainers who can provide a wide range
of aftermarket and OE information
that is part of the mix to make an
automotive business successful.
Auto TECH expo also provides
a unique venue that allows suppliers, business owners and technicians the opportunity to bond and
share their experiences and
knowledge to improve the image
and professionalism of the aftermarket.
And then there is Jacksonsville
– a great location to escape the
memories of this past winter’s
wrath throughout most of the
country.
MD Publications, the producer
of Auto TECH expo, has been an
active member of the aftermarket
since 1976. Our show team will
be found wearing Auto TECH
expo, MD Publications,
Transmission Digest and
Undercar Digest shirts throughout
the run of the show. Feel free to

Roundtable
Set
Michelle
Dickemann for Saturday
The most successful business leaders
in the world always include
“communication” as a key item that has
made a major impact in reaching their
goals.
The Distribution Solutions
Roundtable, set for Saturday, March 14,
as part of Auto TECH expo in Jacksonville, Fla., is designed to bring
management leaders in all segments of the automotive aftermarket
distribution channel together to discuss key issues for mutual success.
“Auto TECH expo provides the perfect venue for manufacturers,
warehouse distributors, parts stores and shops to gather and discuss key
issues that affect their businesses,” said Michelle Dickemann, MD
Publications president. “This event is designed to give participants a better
understanding of what’s driving change, and help them learn what
strategies successful organizations have implemented to increase business.
Participants for the Distribution Solutions Roundtable include exhibiting
manufacturers, as well as representatives from warehouse distributors,
parts stores and shops. After a brief state-of-the-industry address,
participants will be divided into teams – and these teams will present their
findings to the entire group.

Eliminating Comebacks
Misfire Diagnosis
Thursday, March 12, 2-5 p.m.
Misfires can be caused by many different components that cause the MIL to illuminate, the engine to run rough, loss of mileage, a transmissionshifting problem and more. This seminar, conducted by “G” Truglia of ATTS, will provide the information and test techniques you need to diagnosis
and repair the misfire problem correctly the first time.
Cummins 6.7-Liter Diesel High-Pressure Common-Rail
Fuel System
Friday, March 13, 9-10:20 a.m.
The Cummins 6.7-liter diesel’s high-pressure common-rail fuel system requires precise and systematic testing for accurate diagnosis. In this
presentation Drew Croxell, automotive instructor at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, will cover the testing procedures and interpretation
of test results to perform targeted diagnosis that can result in smaller repair costs for the fuel and after-treatment systems on 2007.5+ engines.
How to Color-Code an Electrical Circuit
Friday, March 13, 10:40 a.m.-noon
Veteran shop owner and Ozarks Technical Community College adjunct automotive instructor Duane Mariage notes that many technicians continue
to have difficulty reading electrical diagrams. In his seminar Duane will explain how technicians can color-code electrical circuits (not wires) to
enable them to read the electrical diagram properly and solve the problem. Duane also offers advice at realfixesrealfast.com.
HFO-1234yf Refrigerant – Service Techniques & Precautions
Saturday, March 14, 8:30-9:50 a.m.
The U.S. EPA is demanding that auto manufacturers reduce the amount of greenhouse gases that vehicles emit. Eugene Talley, automotive
instructor at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, explains that as a result, air-conditioning systems using HFO-1234yf refrigerant are
already being phased in on vehicles produced by GM and Chrysler to dramatically reduce the amount of greenhouse gases being released into the
atmosphere. Although many service procedures mimic those for 134A, technicians will need to be aware of new procedures and precautions.
Engine Management & Electronically Controlled Automatic Transmissions
Saturday, March 14, 10 a.m.-12:50 p.m.
There are many transmission symptoms that might be caused by engine-control faults. The age-old question has been: “Is it the engine or the
transmission?” Many drivability technicians have the diagnostic equipment and the skills necessary to make this determination and necessary repairs.
In this class, conducted by Jerry Wayne Bishop, courtesy of O’Reilly Auto Parts, you will learn to determine whether the engine or the transmission is
causing the symptom that’s present. Popular electronic inputs and outputs will also be covered.

Staying On The Leading Edge
Electrical Diagnosis & Repair of ABS Sensors & Controls
Thursday, March 12, 2-5 p.m.
This class, conducted by Jerry Wayne Bishop, courtesy of O’Reilly Auto Parts, is designed to help technicians better understand the operation of antilock
braking systems and diagnose ABS faults more efficiently and accurately. The class will cover the operation of various ABS units, sensors and modules
and how they are networked.
Basic open-circuit faults may not be a challenge to diagnose, but those no-code, false-activation situations can be frustrating. Jerry will guide
technicians in developing a diagnostic procedure designed to help them be successful immediately. Common failures, diagnosis and repair techniques
will be demonstrated throughout the class with multiple case studies of real-world failures.
Alignment & Dynamic Handling
Friday, March 13 9-10:20 a.m.
Undercar Digest Technical Editor Ron Henningsen explains the latest alignment diagnostic techniques along with a complete explanation of how
alignment angles/pulls and handling problems can affect the operation of steering-angle sensors. He will explain the interaction of the various
sensors and systems that have input into a vehicle’s dynamic handling control and how those systems interact with the wheel-alignment settings.
Top 10 Reasons Brakes Differ from the Past
Friday, March 13, 10:40 a.m.-noon
Brake Parts Inc. Technical Trainer Dann Ingebritson covers an assortment of topics that affect braking on today’s vehicles and what you should know
when servicing newer vehicles. Topics include electronics, powertrain differences, new rotor designs, CAFE ratings, friction-formulation changes,
new copper-content regulations, changes in vehicle usage and driving habits of motorists.
New Diesel Exhaust Technologies
Saturday, March 14, 8:30-9:50 a.m.
In 2007, EPA and CARB introduced new regulations and emissions standards for diesel vehicles to be phased in through 2010. MagnaFlow’s
training director, Gary Stamberger, notes that those vehicles are beginning to show up in repair shops for service. Manufacturers have adapted their
emissions systems to meet the new standards, and in some instances the changes are significant. Understanding these new components and their
relationships to each other and to the engine-management system is imperative. Gary will discuss diagnosis of catalyst efficiency and also will
include SCR, NAC and DPF systems.
Why Catalytic Converters Go Bad
Saturday, March 14, 10-11:20 a.m.
Eastern Catalytic emissions-certification engineer Charlie Patano provides a frank presentation on why catalytic converters go bad. Going beyond the
P0420 code, Charlie will discuss common problems that include converter rattles and ticking noises, clogged converters, melted substrates, rottenegg smell, engine misses and hesitation, and converters that glow red.
Custom Exhaust-Pipe Bending
Saturday, March 14, 11:30 a.m.-12:50 p.m. on the Show Floor.
Veteran shop owner and Undercar Digest Muffler & Pipe Advice columnist Ed Hanson is back to show technicians the basics of card bending, mirror
bending, wire-pattern bending, custom pipe bending, dial indicator and the tape measure –“your very best friend.”

popular valve bodies with information on what should be tested and how to be certain what should be replaced.
What If It’s Not the Converter?
Thursday, March 12, 3:40-5 p.m.
There’s a lot of interaction among the solenoids, the valve body and the converter. The TASC Force and Torque
Converter Rebuilders Association (TCRA) are industry leaders at saving builders time and effort by helping to
identify what is and what isn’t a torque-converter issue. The seminar will be presented by Jim Dial.
Teardown on the JF016E
Friday, March 13, 9-10:20 a.m.
Jim Dial of Sonnax is a well-known and respected trainer who has written countless articles appearing in Transmission Digest. Jim will explain by photo
teardown the theory of operation and tools used on the JF016E, which is the Nissan CVT that was introduced in 2012. The session compares this unit
with the previous design, the JF011E.
What Every Builder Should Know
Friday, March 13, 10:40 a.m.-noon
Among his duties at Transtar, Dave Hritsko is responsible for training sales and customer-support people on the when, why and how of transmission
repair. Using his curriculum as a jumping-off point, this session covers a number of popular units.
Deep Inside the 09G
Saturday, March 14, 8:30-9:50 a.m.
Nobody understands the solenoid operations of this troublesome tranny better than the Rostra engineering team. Matt Charter and Scott
Kirkendall explain how to find common problems on the VW/Audi units and how to fix them quickly.
The Eight-Speeds Are Here!
Saturday, March 14, 10-11:20 a.m.
Six-speed transmissions are becoming plentiful, and progress waits for no one. Eight-speed automatic transmissions are on the street in increasing
numbers. One of the first eight-speeds to be released was the Aisin AA80E found in Lexus, Toyota and now Cadillac. The most-recent eight-speed launch
is the 8HP family from ZF, used in various imports and Chrysler. Mike Riley, Transmission Digest technical editor, will compare the two transmission
platforms to illustrate operational differences, trouble areas, rebuilding issues and product availability in this hands-on session.

your business.
The Power of the Phone
Friday, March 13, 9-10:20 a.m.

Intervals Are You Using in Your Shop?
Saturday, March 14, 11:30 a.m.-12:50 p.m.
30K-, 60K- and 90K-mile service schedules are a thing of the past. Not only are they probably wrong for your customers but they also are very likely bad
for your shop’s reputation and wellbeing. MAP/AMRA President Joe Henmueller explains that consumers, consumer groups and regulatory agencies
across the country are challenging preventive-maintenance schedules not supported by the OEMs. Do your maintenance schedules provide a true
benefit to the consumer or only to your bottom line?

VW Eurovan Repair Gets Real
(Not all Bolts are Created Equal)
Complaint/Concern:
A 2002 Volkswagen Eurovan came in with noise and shift
issues. The vehicle had a 01P transmission, which is the
lockup version of the AG4 family. Since the van had 110,000
miles on it and the drivability symptoms, we dropped the pan
to check for damage. We found a fair amount of debris, so the
unit was pulled out and disassembled. Basically, the K1 clutch
was trashed and the B2 brake had signs of slippage, so the
transmission was completely rebuilt and reinstalled. The road
test went well and the vehicle was delivered, only to return a
week later.
Upon his return, the customer reported that one day he put
the transmission in drive and heard a noise similar to the
original noise. Beyond that, he noticed some wet spots under
the vehicle where it was parked in the garage.
The van was taken for another road test and, sure enough,
the transmission made a rubbing noise going into drive.
Everything else seemed okay and the vehicle was put on a lift
to check for leaks. There was a leak, but instead of
transmission fluid, the liquid appeared to be antifreeze.
We decided to pull the transmission due to the noise
problem, but just as the transmission was ready to drop,
things got ugly. When the top bell-housing bolt was removed,
a stream of antifreeze poured out (which is rather
uncommon).
At that point, repairing the transmission became a distant
second in the priority pecking order. Visions of replacing an
engine passed through everyone’s minds, but then came the
question, “How did this happen?”
threads in the hole and the short piece of bolt. The piece was
inserted and the epoxy was allowed to dry. Engine coolant
then was added to check for leaks. It worked and there were
sufficient threads remaining for a bell-housing bolt. Crisis
averted!
Now that we solved the antifreeze leak, we were back to
the original noise complaint. The transmission pump was
pulled and clutch drums were removed to find the source of
the noise, which was caused by the K1 clutch hub floating
rearward, allowing the bottom friction plate to drop off the end
of the hub. Noise would then occur during neutral/drive apply.
How could this happen?
AG4 transmissions have a unique K1 clutch and K1 hub
arrangement. Unlike normal clutch hubs that are held in place
by thrust washers or bearings, the AG4 (01P) hub is held in
place by the tabs of the four plastic inserts that act as a
bushing between the hub and K3 drum. Somehow, these tabs
broke off and allowed the hub to float.
When assembling the K1 clutch, load some of the frictions,
steels and the backing onto the K1 hub, then insert the plastic
guides. Place the rest of the plates into the K1 drum and then
set the hub and installed plates into the drum along with the
snap-ring to ensure the correct position. Use caution when
pressing in the K3 drum to avoid breaking the inserts.
Two fixes for the price of one. Always check bolt designs to
avoid additional grief. TD
1
Cause/Condition:
Not only is the transmission installed into the Eurovan with
a shoe horn (it’s really tight), but the transmission-to-engine
bolt selection was developed by the same engineers
responsible for Honda valve-body bolts. There are a lot of
them.
The bell housing bolt arrangement is inconsistent,
however, the hole in question is at the top of the engine and is
a blind hole at the edge of a water jacket (Figure 4). When
the installer removed the unit initially, he did not pay close
enough attention to the various lengths of bolts (which are
several). In addition to the varying lengths, a few of the bolts
are pointed, for some reason (Figure 5).
Unfortunately, the installer put the longest bolt with the
sharpest point into the hole right next to the water jacket and
punched a hole into it. It took time for the antifreeze to wick
through the bolt threads and leak out.
Blind Hole

Wrong bolt
Correction/Modification:
To address the crack in the engine bolt hole, a piece of bolt
was cut (approx. ¼” long) and slotted for a screwdriver. The
hole was cleaned out and an epoxy was applied to the

As Seen in
We Thought “DOT 3” Meant “DOT 3,” Too!
It’s probably not wrong to think that if a term has a
definition, that’s what it means. You’d a thunk, right?
Well, evidently, not always. Like when it comes to
DOT 3 brake fluid. Keep this in mind when dealing
with some Hondas and Toyotas of a certain age. As it
turns out, these manufacturers had formulas of their
own for the OE fluid in some of their vehicles. The
problem is, both were also called DOT 3 brake fluid!
Not surprisingly, the requirement for unusual brake
fluid formulations called “DOT 3” led to troublesome
conditions in the field – master-cylinder internal leaks,
to be specific.
From where we sit, this comes across as a result
of the manufacturers’ unreasonable belief that if
certain of their models ever needed brake fluid added
or replaced in the field (very possible) that the new
fluid would always exactly match the OE fill (not very
likely). As a result, this has led to more than one
recall, as well as m/c design changes.
Let’s check a few specifics:
In late 2010 Toyota began recalling many ’05
Avalons, and ’06 Lexus RX, GS and IS models
because of internal master cylinder leakage. Those
leaks were a result of seal hardening and wear. This
occurred because the seal material required special
lubrication that it wouldn’t get without the use of DOT
3 brake fluid that also met a certain manufacturer’s
specification. The OE and OER fluid included a
strong dose of liquid polymers to keep the seals
supple; no polymers – or not enough – are found in
most everyday, off-the-shelf DOT 3 brake fluids. So
the result was predictable.
Even before the time they issued the recall, Toyota
had switched master cylinders in the affected models
to ones using seals similar to the ones found in the
rest of its vehicles – seals compatible with most brake
fluids that meet Uncle Sam’s DOT 3 standards. Under
the recall they switched master cylinders in the
affected cars over to ones also built with these morerobust seals.
Not long after Toyota issued its recall the same
thing began to happen over at Honda. Some ’05-07
Odysseys and RLs were found to be having a similar
problem, and for a similar reason. So Honda took
similar action, including a recall to swap out a bunch
of master cylinders.
So, what do we take away from all of this? A
couple of things, really: First, if you have a customer
with one of the affected models, its master cylinder is
leaking internally and it’s never been replaced, it’s
worthwhile to check the VIN against the recalls.
(Honda’s NHTSA recall # was 10V-504, its own
campaigns were R51 for Odyssey and R52 for RL.)
Toyota’s NHTSA # was 10V-499. If the car’s in one of
the recall groups the manufacturer owes them an
updated master cylinder and installation (but probably
at a dealer’s shop.) If it’s not in any of the mandated
campaigns then you’re cleared for handling the repair
yourself.
But this situation also shows that if you look up a
fluid or lubricant and you see the words “… that meet
(manufacturer’s) specification xxxxx,” they may
actually have some significance. In these two cases,
if everyone had used fluids that actually met the
manufacturers’ specs, many of the affected cars
would probably still have their original master
cylinders in place, working just fine. On the other
hand, both Honda and Toyota found out the hard way
that in the real world, to most people, DOT 3 brake
fluid is just DOT 3 brake fluid. So they wound up
having to make their seals conform to what’s out
there, in the end!

Service Alert:
Grand Cherokee & Dodge Durango Steering ‘Clunk’
Problem Recognized: Jeep Grand Cherokee and
Dodge Durango models manufactured from 2011
through November 2012 may exhibit a moderate to
severe clunking noise that may create a shimmy
induced through the steering gear. Customers with
these problem vehicles can contact the dealer as
soon as possible and inspect the intermediate shaft
that couples to the steering gear.
Additional Information: Chrysler says the
problem vehicles will be repaired by using new
replacement steering shafts, part number
05057539AD. Identification of the replacement part
can be found by looking for a green dot adjacent to
the shaft identification number printed on the label.
Low-mileage vehicles will be considered on a nocharge basis. Vehicles with more than 60,000 miles
will be repaired within the new parts guidelines. The
carmaker has the book labor charge listed at 0.5 of
an hour.
Corrective Action: Replace the lower steering
shaft and inspect the steering gear for looseness. A
case-by-case basis is a prerogative, according to
Chrysler. Send your customers with vehicles you
have inspected to the nearest franchise dealer for
more information.

In 1976 Les and Carol Langsford founded M D Publications Inc.
and published their first issue of Muffler Digest. Transmission Digest
followed in 1981, and in 1987 Muffler Digest became Undercar Digest
to address the changing marketplace. Today, the latter continues to
expand with drivability and underhood issues. Three monthly
technical bulletins – Transmission Tech/Talk, Alignment Tech/Talk
and Brake Tech/Talk – also became part of our publishing family.
Equally important is our history of yearly trade shows, including this
year’s Auto TECH expo in Jackonsville that brings together shops,
suppliers and training.
Thirty-nine years later, now under the leadership of their
daughter Michelle Dickemann, M D Publications continues to
provide you the most-reliable information in the industry – and with
enhancements to help you. This year’s refocused trade show, now
called Auto TECH expo, now complements its existing seminar-track
lineup with a general-repair category that emphasizes diagnostics
and drivability. These categories also are being added to the pages
of Undercar Digest.
In addition we continue to make ongoing upgrades to our
websites for Undercar Digest (www.undercardigest.com) and
Transmission Digest (www.transmissiondigest.com), making them
easier to read and navigate. Electronic versions of the magazines
have easy “flip” pages that also adapt to tablets and mobile devices
of any size.
We take seriously our role in communicating information to the
markets we serve. At the same time, we know that communication is
a two-way street. Our editors, sales team, circulation managers, and
art and production personnel are eager to hear any ideas you have
to make our product work more effectively for your shop and
employees. We hope you’ll feel comfortable contacting us anytime.
Finally, we spend a great deal of time and effort arranging and
planning for our yearly trade-show event. To us, it’s more than a
trade show, more than a three-day seminar production; it’s our
once-a-year chance to host our readers and further our goal of
providing up-to-date, free-flowing information to shop operators
and technicians who make their living repairing and maintaining
vehicles in America and beyond. You’re the ones who gain customer
trust and keep vehicles of all makes and models running safely and
efficiently. Thank you for being a part of Auto TECH expo.

Focused on Today’s
Shops & Technicians
In addition to our monthly printed versions of Undercar
Digest and Transmission Digest, readers also can read the
magazines online at www.undercardigest.com and
www.transmissiondigest.com, respectively. The current edition
of each magazine and past issues are available online in their
entirety. You can learn more about all our publications and Auto
TECH expo by visiting www.mdpublications.com.
If you have a question about an ad or an article in one of the
magazines, you’re always welcome to call us at 417-866-3917
and we’ll be glad to assist you. We also offer other benefits to
our readers. If you’d like to learn more about a product
advertised in one of the magazines, you can click on the printed
website of the advertiser when looking at the electronic version
of the magazine, or simply use the business reply cards included
in each issue. Circle the reader response number that
corresponds to the Reader Card number on the bottom of each
display ad, and we’ll make sure your request for additional
information goes to the advertiser. If you have a comment or
question you can send us an email.
To provide more technical information, M D Publications also
offers three popular eight-page monthly technical bulletins –
Transmission Tech/Talk, Alignment Tech/Talk and Brake
Tech/Talk. All three are offered in both print and electronic
versions.
We’ve been in the publishing business for more than a third
of a century, and we pride ourselves on helping shop operators
and technicians improve their technical and management skills.
M D Publications has a seasoned team that understands the
industry. Transmission Digest Publisher Bobby Mace, with
nearly 30 years’ experience, knows the ins and outs of the
transmission industry and meets with industry leaders regularly.
Undercar Digest Editor Jim Wilder comes from an automotive
family and has more than 33 years experience as an automotive
journalist. In addition to writing many of the articles you read in
the magazines, Bobby and Jim gather the news and coordinate
technical and management articles from industry experts who
contribute to each magazine. Feel free to contact them when you
have information of interest to our respective industries.
Undercar Digest Technical Editor Ron Henningsen has spent
his entire career working on vehicles and teaching others to do
the same. He has been a presenter at our show for more than 25
years. Transmission Digest Technical Editor Mike Riley is a
veteran of the transmission industry. He has been director of
technical services and product management at Transtar
Industries. Undercar Digest Business Editor Tom Langer worked
at his grandfather’s Pontiac dealership as a teenager, doing a
myriad of duties, and went on to start his own company, TLG
Research, which provides information for automotive clients
around the country. Transmission Digest Business Editor Terry
Greenhut has owned his own shop and is known as one of the
nation’s leading automotive speakers.
