The UTP team will arrange pre-arrival interviews and testing, either in-person in your country or via Skype, to ensure that you can make the most of the courses offered. The UTP team works in conjunction with all Bishop Guertin faculty to advise on how to effectively work with international students. This ensures that students do not miss out on valuable academic resources and recreational opportunities. We work hard to keep you informed about what is current in the school. In addition to regular support from Bishop Guertin teachers, students who are having difficulty with a particular subject can be matched with a peer tutor who is a member of the Bishop Guertin National Honor Society. Peer tutors are current Bishop Guertin students who make themselves available in order to mentor and instruct other students in subjects in which they excel. Located in the Bishop Guertin Academic Support Center, students can utilize this resource during their free periods throughout the school day. If a student requires additional academic support, our Student Services team is happy to help students connect with one of several experienced tutors that work with our program. Progress Reports Arrival Pickup Management and Transportation Services From the moment you arrive in the United States, our UTP team will ensure that your transportation needs are met. We will arrange airport pickup and transfer to your homestay. Throughout your program, the UTP team works together with the school and your host family to be sure transportation is provided to and from school. Orientation International students will join Bishop Guertin students in their regular orientation activities. However, the UTP team will organize a special orientation for international students, including important information sessions. There will also be fun activities to help you feel right at home from the moment you arrive. Day-to-Day Support Studying in another country brings challenges beyond just the language barrier. The UTP office is the information point for all international students at Bishop Guertin. Our Student Services team is physically present on a daily basis at the Bishop Guertin campus. The UTP team will send periodic progress reports back to each student’s parents, giving them a sense of comfort. These reports are a valuable resource, which allows parents to see their sons and daughters progress academically and socially while they are away from home. Insurance Plan Our international students maintain adequate health insurance coverage through IMG Global. Students have 100% coverage in-network and access to many options for U.S. healthcare providers. UTP assists both host families and students in finding the proper provider in any given circumstance, as well as assistance with all necessary claims after a visit to a medical professional. Global Ambassador Club The Global Ambassador Club is a student organization run by the UTP team at Bishop Guertin High School. Club members are American students who help international students by organizing orientation and other extracurricular activities. They also take part in workshops in the Language Foundation classes and support the international student body where they can. Homestay Program We have a large network of local host families who take pride in welcoming international students into their homes. The Homestay Program is an exceptional opportunity for international students to sharpen their English language ability by immersing themselves in daily conversations with typical American families. Our Student Services team works diligently to review each student application. They then determine which of our host families can best help integrate students comfortably into American society. By matching our students with the most compatible host families, we ensure they have a comfortable and safe home-environment in which they can succeed both academically and socially. 9 10 bghsutp.com |The UTP Difference ACTIVITIES AND POINTS TABLE (EXAMPLE) NYC TRIP 40 FORMAL OR INFORMAL DANCES 10 LOCAL SKI TRIP 10 BOSTON TRIP - BLUE MAN GROUP PERFORMANCE 8 BOSTON DUCK BOAT 8 BOSTON AQUARIUM 8 RED SOX GAME 6 QUINCY MARKET (BOSTON) TRIP 6 CROSS COUNTRY SKIING 4 UNIVERSITY TOUR OF BOSTON AREA 4 FISHING TRIP 3 HAUNTED HAY RIDE AND CORN MAZE 3 “LAUNCH” TRAMPOLINE PARK 3 LOCAL CONCERTS 3 ICE-SKATING 2 HIKING TRIP 1 APPLE PICKING 1 THIS TABLE IS AN EXAMPLE OF THE UTP AMERICAN EXPERIENCE PROGRAM POINT SYSTEM. Our host families are carefully selected from our large local network. They provide a safe, comfortable place to stay and act as a home away from home during a student’s time with us at Bishop Guertin. Living with a family not only allows students to practice their English even more, but it also gives them the opportunity to gain a unique insight into the American way of life. Students usually stay in a ‘typical’ American home, which may consist of two stories, two or more bedrooms and more than one bathroom. There will also be common living space and a kitchen. You may receive your own bedroom or you may share with a host brother or sister. A home in New Hampshire usually has a yard to relax or play sports in and typically there will be a park and shops nearby. Every home is different, so every homestay experience will be unique. Generally, with the homestay program, the more effort the student makes to participate in the life of his or her host family, the more enriching their experience will be. Dining At Home At School Through our homestay program, your breakfast and dinner are provided during the week. On the weekends, you are provided with breakfast, lunch and dinner. Any special dietary requirements will be noted. Your host family may even take you to an international supermarket or help you find some foods from your home country. Dining as a family is a very important aspect of many American households, and this time with your host family will be a big part of your cultural experience in the States. Students at Bishop Guertin eat their lunch in a large school cafeteria. You will be able to choose from many different options, which change throughout the week. You’ll be able to sit with your friends and enjoy lunch together on your break between classes. Bishop Guertin High School Weekend Life While studying at Bishop Guertin, students have many options for weekend activities. Centrally located in the heart of New England, Nashua is surrounded by scenic countryside and is just an hour’s train ride to Boston!
