WELCOME
From Governor John R. Kasich and the
Ohio State Fair's General Manager Virgil L. Strickler
Welcome to the
162nd Ohio State
Fair, an annual
family tradition for
thousands! Along
with my wife, Karen,
and my daughters,
Emma and Reese, I
always look forward
to attending the State
Fair.
As always, you will find this year’s Fair
rich in tradition, education, and of
course, agriculture. I hope you take the
opportunity to witness firsthand the
amazing people, places and products
that make Ohio great. I also encourage
you to take a moment to appreciate
agriculture’s role as Ohio’s largest
industry. The Fair gives us an opportunity
to demonstrate its importance to our
culture and economy.

SMOKEY BEAR
A FAIR LEGACY CONTINUES
THE
Ohio State Fair is full of tradition. For many families, one
notable tradition is to be greeted by name by the iconic
Smokey Bear.
Smokey Bear was brought into the wildfire prevention service in
1944 by the efforts of the U.S. Forest Service. Fifteen years after
his debut, Smokey made his home here at the Ohio State Fair
in 1959. Since then, the famous bear’s presence has become
something children and adults alike look forward to each year.
Aside from promoting fire prevention and safety practices,
Smokey Bear is best known for greeting fair visitors by their first
names when they visit him in the 8-acre Natural Resources Park
located at the southeast corner of the grounds. He stands next
to a pavilion full of interactive natural resources and recreation
opportunities. The park includes an 1800s-themed log cabin,
entertainment programs throughout the day, a tall grass prairie,
and educational exhibits that highlight subjects such as Ohio
wildlife.
For years, Smokey has worn gigantic Levi blue jeans made
from approximately 14 yards of material. The original bear has
interacted with and encouraged more than five decades of Fair
visitors to take the pledge to “never, ever play with matches or
leave any fire unattended,” during his time at the Ohio State Fair.
This year, though, Smokey will have an exciting change.
2015 OHIO STATE FAIR | OHIOSTATEFAIR.COM
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources will unveil a brandnew, 14-foot tall animatronic version of Smokey Bear at the 2015 Ohio State
Fair. The original Smokey Bear, who spent 55 years teaching fire prevention to
children and their families, will be transitioning into a well-deserved retirement.
14
The new Smokey will possess qualities that make him even more lifelike.
His moving arms, head and mouth will create a more realistic and engaging
experience for fairgoers who visit him.

The 2014 Ohio State Fair may have marked the end of the original Smokey
Bear’s career, but it did not mark the end of the bear’s legacy as it will continue
through the brand new 21st century Smokey Bear for many years to come. Make
it a point this year to visit the brand new Smokey Bear any day of the Ohio State
Fair. Smokey’s hours of operation are 11 am to 6 pm daily.

TRADITIONS
Since the first Ohio State Fair in 1850,
many people have picked a favorite
tradition. A few are listed below. What
is your favorite? Tell us on your favorite
social media outlet and use hashtag
#ohiostatefair!
Butter Cow and Sculpture
From the first appearance of the butter
cow and calf in 1903, these sculptures
made of butter have been a highlight
for Fair visitors. New cow and calf
sculptures, as well as a surprise sculpture,
are created each year. In 2014, a team
of artists worked 540 hours and used
2,033 pounds of butter to create the
masterpiece and its accompanying
surprise sculpture – a series of 15 Ohio
symbols!

Slide’s 144-foot yellow waves on a burlap

Junior Fair Board
The Junior Fair Board (JFB) comprises
youth ages 16 through 20 who represent
various youth organizations and are
actively involved with the annual Ohio
State Fair.
EVER
see someone
wearing one
of these blue
shirts at the Ohio State
Fair? Let us introduce
you to our amazing
Junior Fair Board, a group
celebrating its 86th year
this summer.
The blue shirts are worn
by some of Ohio’s best
and brightest young
leaders, hand-picked to
contribute to the success
of the Ohio State Fair
each year. Selected to
represent their respective
youth organizations,
these students serve on
behalf of thousands of
students across Ohio. As
ambassadors for 4-H, FFA,
Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts,
Farm Bureau, FCCLA and
Camp Fire, they are able
to share their experiences
and emphasize the value of
the Junior Fair with patrons
throughout the 12 days of
the Fair.
For these dedicated Junior
Fair Board members, the
passion for the Fair is in
their blood. They have
risen through the ranks
over the years, spending
their childhood summers
caring for livestock animals,
exhibiting their projects at
both the county and state
level, attending
group meetings,
assuming leadership
roles, taking part in
summer camps and
growing, all while
these organizations
have shaped their lives.
WHO ARE THOSE PEOPLE
IN BLUE SHIRTS?
“As I reflect back on my
experiences in the Junior
Fair, I realize that without it
I would not be the person
I am today,” said Mary
Siekman, current president
of the Junior Fair Board.
“The time I spent involved
in the FFA Organization has
influenced me to pursue
an education at The Ohio
State University, gain realworld work experience
and has allowed me to
build relationships with the
people who mean the most
to me.”
These students, ages
16-20, come together
for two weeks of hard
work, building enduring
friendships and
professional relationships
along the way. Their
varying personalities
and experiences provide
a youthful and fun
perspective as they fill the
roles of welcoming officials
at livestock shows, Smokey
Bear’s courteous assistants,
friendly faces working at
the Monster Mural and
enthusiastic companions
of our Fair’s mascot, Butters
D. Cow.
“It’s a beautiful thing when
a group of diverse students,
each with the same goal
of serving others, can
come together and build
lifelong friendships based
on both their similarities
and their differences,” said
Siekman. Students serving
on this year’s Junior Fair
Board have a wide range
of interests including
education, fashion,
technology and agriculture,
and have had no trouble
finding common ground
while working as a team
during the Fair.
While you are enjoying that
funnel cake this summer,
be sure to keep an eye out
for the individuals wearing
those iconic blue shirts.
These students are always
looking for opportunities
to strike up a conversation
and learn what you think
makes the Ohio State Fair
great.

FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED
Farming in Ohio is and always has been, a family business.
95% of farms in the United States are family owned. A large
number of acres or animals doesn’t mean that a farm is not
solely owned and operated by members of a family.
In many cases, the same family has lived and worked on
the same land for generations. While many farms use the
standard accounting practice of incorporating, this does
not change the fact that the decisions are being made by
a family with the same goals and values as the rest of
America. Learn more at ohiosoybeanfarmers.org.
This message brought to you by Ohio soybean farmers and their checkoff.
