Peru – Bolivia Special Carnival de Oruro
20 Days (07/02/15 – 26/02/15)
ITINERARY IN BRIEF
Upon arrival in Lima the capital of Peru we head south to visit Arequipa and the famous Colca Canyon. From here we continue towards the Lake
Titicaca the highest navigable lake in the world where we visit Copacabana and we also go for a short trek across the famous Sun Island (Isla del Sol).
We continue to La Paz and we visit to Tiwanaku where we discover the wealth of this lost civilisation which played an important role in the history of
Bolivia. We continue to Oruro where we spend 2 days enjoying the famous Carnival de Oruro before the tour continues to the Salar de Uyuni where
2
we discover the island with the giant cacti and the vastness of this 10.582km²/4.086mi big salt desert. Still in southern direction we cross the Lipez
desert with its volcanoes, Lagunas as well as its rich animal life (lama, vicuña, alpaca, viscacha, pink flamingos, foxes, Nandu, etc....). After this
incredible visit to the most southern spot of Bolivia we head back north to the beautiful cities of Potosi and Sucre. Upon return to La Paz we visit the
town (the highest capital in the world) before continuing to Cuzco where we discover the town, the Sacred Valley of the Incas and of course the
famous Machu Picchu before we return to Lima where our tour ends with a city tour.

both for indigenous people and Catholics. After lunch we head to the port where a boat will be waiting to bring us to the south of the island to Yumani.
From here we go for a short trek which takes us to the Palacio de Pilkokaina (“place where the birds rest”). This construction is characterised by its

8. 14/02/15: Carnival de Oruro
The Carnival, which takes place every year, gives rise to panoply of popular arts expressed in masks, textiles and embroidery. The main event in the
Carnival is the procession or entrada. During the ceremony, the dancers walk the four kilometres of the processional route and repeat the journey for a
full twenty hours without interruption. More than 28,000 dancers and 10,000 musicians organized in about 50 groups take part in the procession which
still shows many features dating back to medieval mystery plays.

We start our journey around 10h30 in the morning and our first stop will be the locomotive cemetery which is a vestige of more prosperous times. From
here we continue to Colchani which is a small village situated on the edge of the Salar and who’s inhabitants live from salt exploitation. In Colchani we
discover how the salt is processed manually and we visit the small salt boutique, which also serves as a museum, where we can see large salt
carvings and other objects (pottery, jewellery, tools, etc.). After this impressive visit with the craftsmen on the top of the world we enter the famous
2
Salar de Uyuni; the biggest salt desert in the world with acreage of 10.582km²/4.086mi . One of the particularities of the Uyuni Salt Flat is that it
contains a reserve of 9 million tonnes of Lithium which represents 40% of world production. We head to the Island Incahuasi which mistakenly is better
known as the Fisherman’s Island. This geological formation is a remnant of petrified coral and is covered in giant cacti that can get up to 12m/39.37ft
high. From the top of the island we have a wonderful 360° view of the Salar de Uyuni. After lunch our journey continues in the direction of Puerto
Chuvica. We have the possibility to visit the “Cueva de las Galaxias” which is a strange phenomenon of fossil algae which reminds us that the ocean
was present here all the way to Oruro. In the adjacent cave we can observe the Chullpares which are Inca funerary remains. We climb to the viewpoint
from where we have an unobstructed view of the desert and if we take a closer look we can also observe the fossil coral that once were part of an
impressive coral barrier. After this impressive visit we continue to the small village of Puerto Chuvica (or San Juan depending on availability) situated
at the doors of the Lipez desert. We arrive at the shelter around 16h00 and the evening is free.*

We continue our tour of south Bolivia and from Puerto Chuvica we pass the Uyuni – Ollague railway, which is the property of the FCA (Empresa
Ferroviaria Andina), before crossing the Salar de Chiguana. We observe the still active volcano Ollague and even from far we can see its fumarole.
We follow the famous Jewel Route which is composed of the Lagunas Cañapa, Hedionda, Chiar Khota, Honda and Ramadita. Today we also visit the
Stone Tree (please refrain from climbing on the rock) planted in the middle of the Siloli desert and at the end of the day we enter the Reserva Nacional
de la Fauna Andina Eduardo Avaroa where we arrive at the Laguna Colorada. This Alto Andina Laguna gets its name because of the red colour which
is caused by microscopic shellfish which is the principal nutriment of the rose flamingos that live in this area. Due to climate changes (lack of rain) and
the high evaporation of the Altiplanic basin the water level of the regions Lagunas is reduced rapidly which year after year also reduces the population
of the flamingos. Mid-afternoon we leave to get installed in our shelter and the evening is free.*

Spring –Dali Desert – Laguna Verde – Licancahur (5971m) – Villamar – Valle de Rocas – San Cristóbal – Uyuni – Potosi
Our tour continues in southern direction to the Laguna Verde – one of the most southern points in Bolivia. We leave the Laguna Colorada in order to
go even deeper into the Reserva Nacional de la Fauna Andina Eduardo Avaroa. We visit the boiling geysers of Sol de Mañana which is an impressive
geothermal field with pits of boiling mud and strong smells of sulphur. Our tour continues in the direction of the thermal bath of Polques, a natural
source of hot water where we have the possibility to go for a swim. We continue through the South Lipez and we observe the “Damas del Desierto”
which are enormous rocks planted in this barren landscape and carved by the wind and weather over the years. We also cross the Dali Desert, which
was named in reverence to the Catalan artist because of the resemblance of the landscape with the unreal yet natural colours to the masters’ work.
We continue to the Laguna Verde and Blanca at the foot of the Licancahur where we stop to take a few pictures. The Laguna Verde gets its green
colour from the high concentration of lead, arsenic sulphur and calcium – please refrain from bathing;-) From the Laguna Verde we start our drive back
north. We pass by the small village Villamar which seems lost in the middle of the gigantic Lipez desert before passing by the biggest mining project in
Bolivian history at San Cristobal. We arrive around 18h00 in Uyuni just in time for a quick dinner before getting the bus to Potosi. Once arrived in

13. 19/02/15: Potosi – Visit of the Mines (Cerro Rico)* - Sucre
The morning is free and after lunch we start with a visit to the miners market. Custom says it brings good luck to buy Coca leaves, cigarettes, alcohol
or even dynamite as presents for the miners that will receive us at their workplace. Once we have finished our purchases we visit one of the mines in
the Cerro Rico mountain. The mines here are quite different from western mines, some of them are very old – dug out by hand by the slaves of the
Inca Empire and later by African slaves during the Spanish occupation and very narrow and short (not for claustrophobics). Our visit of the Cerro Rico
starts by the “Tio” (uncle) who is the protector of the mines and to whom the miners on many occasions make offerings in order to be protected from
st
bad spells. We visit the 1 level of the mine and have the possibility to descend up to 3 levels below – 500 or 600 m into the depths of the Cerro Rico.
After this impressive visit we return to the hotel to pick up our bags and are from here transferred to the bus terminal for the bus to Sucre. Once
installed in the hotel in Sucre the rest of the evening is free.

16. 22/02/15: Cuzco – Sacred Valley – Aguas Calientes
After breakfast, we visit the Sacred Valley and all the important Inca ruins in the area. We’ll see the ruins of Pisac with (depending on the day) the
market, Urubamba and Ollantaytambo - a superb Inca fortress made of megalithic stones. In the evening we take the train to Aguas Calientes - a small
village where all the buildings are concentrated along the railway giving it a “gold-digger” ambiance where we spend the night.
PISAQ
This archaeological site, considered one of the most important in Cuzco, lies near the town of
Písac, of colonial origin, and which hosts a Sunday fair that draws thousands of visitors and
villagers from remote highland villages, clad in colourful traditional dress. Holidays feature the
procession of the varayocs or town mayors, who at around 9:30 am head to church to attend the
traditional Mass held in Quechua, the Inca language.
OLLANTAYTAMBO
This typical Inca town, located 93 km northeast of Cuzco, was so-named in honour of local chieftain
Ollanta, who according to legend fell in love with one of the daughters of Inca ruler Pachacuteq and
was punished for daring to set his sights on royalty. The complex, perched on a hilltop overlooking
the town, features buildings such as the Temple of the Sun, the Mañaracay or Royal Chamber, the
Incahuatana and the Princess' Baths. The upper section features a fortress made up of a series of
carved stone terraces built to protect the valley from possible invasion by warring jungle tribes. One
of the best-preserved areas lies north of the Hanan Huacaypata square: an area of 15 blocks of
houses built on top of carved stone walls.

17. 23/02/15: Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Cuzco
We leave at 07h00 or earlier by bus to visit the famous Machu Picchu. After this impressive visit we return to Aguas Calientes to take the train back to
Ollantaytambo where upon arrival we are transferred to the hotel in Cuzco and the evening is free.
The Citadel of Machu Picchu is the most important attraction in Cuzco. It was discovered in 1911 by the American explorer, Hiram Bingham, and is
considered to be one of the most extraordinary examples of scenic architecture in the world. In Quechua Machu Picchu means “old mountain”. The
Citadel was built on a hilltop which dominates the deep valley of the Urubamba river in the middle of tropical rainforest. Machu Picchu was both a
centre of worship and astronomical observation and the private domain of the family of the Inca Pachacuteq.

Agricultural sector
This district is surrounded by a series of agricultural terraces that differ in type and size and
might have performed two chief functions, one being crop growing and the other protection
from water erosion caused by intense rains. Within the agricultural sector are five
storehouse-like structures, called collpas or granaries.

Checkpoint
It is a three-walled building with several windows, which you come to before reaching the
main gate. The view from here offers a panorama of the two large sectors, the agricultural
and the urban, as well as the surrounding scenery.
Upper cemetery and burial stones
In Machu Picchu, as in all Incan cities, the Incas buried their dead in outlying areas.
Researchers have uncovered skeletal remains in this place, and in the upper part, they
found small stones that are part of the site, an indication that they were used as some sort of
offering by the Incas.
Urban sector
The physical separation between this sector and the agricultural is a dry moat, and from this
site you can also see a rather long stairway leading to the main gate. One of the features of
an Incan city (llaqta) is that the main architectural elements are found within this sector. And
in the case of Machu Picchu, the city is shaped as a letter.
To the north is a large sub-sector, religious due to the number of temples there, and to the
south is a group of homes and workshops built on terraced platforms that Hiram Bingham
christened the military group.
Temple of the Sun
The building is designed as a semi-circle and constructed on a foundation of rock, an
existing granite block fashioned to follow the natural curve and whose perimeter measures
10.5 meters. There are two trapezoidal windows in which the builders added mouldings at
each of the corners. On the north side is a wonderfully stone worked gate, and in its jambs,
the Incas drilled holes, much like what is found in the Qoricancha Temple in the city of
Cusco.
Ceremonial rock
This memoir stands 3 meters high, measures 7 meters around at its base, and has been
fashioned to look like a cat. From a different angle though, it recalls the profile of one of the
mountains surrounding Machu Picchu. Because of the characteristics of the group this rock
belongs to, which also features two “huayranas” or three-walled rooms, it probably fulfilled
ceremonial purposes.
Temple of the Three Windows
This building, located on the eastern side of the main square, exhibits a large rectangular
floor plan and owes its name to the main section, where there are three beautiful windows
plus two open spaces. The architectural style exhibited in this structure, together with the
main temple, is by far the most striking of all Machu Picchu; we are talking about enormous,
meticulously fashioned stones, fitted to such a degree that mere millimetres separate them.
Main Temple
It is north of the sacred plaza, hard by the Temple of the Three Windows. The Incas built it
as a wayrana, i.e. an 11 meter by 8 meter rectangular structure but with only three walls,
which measure .90 meters in thickness. At the foot of the main wall is a sculpted stone that
might have served as an altar.
Intiwatana
This intrusive rock is the ceremonial centre of Machu Picchu. The word can be translated as
sun (inti) year (wata) and was a place where the Incan astronomers studied the solar year to
possibly determine the solstices and equinoxes. Many researchers believe the Incas might
have used the angles of the Intiwatana as a directional landmark in order for them to find
magnetic north. Whatever the case may be, it certainly was the ceremonial axis of great
religious significance.
The plazas
There are four plazas in Machu Picchu located at different levels, yet they all feature classic
Incan architecture in the form of their rectangular shape. The architects linked them together
by staircases that were built into the construction of the terraces. The largest of these is the
main square, which fulfilled religious and social functions.

Mausoleum or tomb
The enormous, leaning stone block supporting the lower part of the Temple of the Sun forms
a grotto that had been decorated and prepared with exceptional skill and later used as a
mausoleum. It was also a place where the people worshipped and made offerings to the
mummies of the chief rulers. At its entrance you see a depiction of the earth goddess’s stair
step symbol.
Huayna Picchu*
The eternal guardian of the Sanctuary, Huayna Picchu (meaning “young mountain” in
Quechua) towers over the Incan city. To conquer its summit is truly an unforgettable
experience. Along the route and at the top are sacred structures and eye catching terraces,
built right against the slope’s edge. It is possible to begin the ascent from Machu Picchu’s
main square by way of a path the Incas themselves made. Today, it is well marked and in
good condition. The view from Huayna Picchu is remarkable: Machu Picchu spread out in all
its glory, the Vilcanota River Canyon, and the surrounding mountains. Be prepared for a
tough two to three hour climb.

Main Square, Cusco
During the Inca Empire, the square was called Huacaypata, a Quechua word meaning “place of
tears” or “meeting place”. It was an important ceremonial spot where the Inti Raymi or Festival of
the Sun was celebrated every year. It is also the place where Francisco Pizarro proclaimed the
conquest of Cusco. After the Spanish arrived, the plaza changed. They erected stone arches and
built the structures that surround it today.
Cathedral of Cusco
The building went through two construction stages: first, the Chapel of the Triumph was built on top
of what used to be the temple Suntar Wasi (House of God); later, the cathedral itself was built over
the remains of the palace of Inca Wiracocha. A Renaissance building in its majority, the interior
decoration is rich in cedar and alder woodcarvings. The choir and the pulpit stand out for their
beauty. An important collection of paintings from the Cusco School and silver wrought pieces are
also kept there.
Sacsayhuaman Archaeological Complex
The area contains thirty-three archaeological sites. The most famous is Fort Sacsayhuaman. It
might well have been a religious structure, but for its location and style, the Spanish and the
historians believe it was a military construction. The most important temple in Hanan Qosqo or
Upper Cusco might have been located there, dedicated to Andean cosmology and to the worship of
the Inti (sun), the Quilla (moon), Chaska (stars), Illapa (ray), and other divinities. It is described as
massive for the size of some of its stones, which weigh between 90 and 120 tons. This is also the
stage of the Inti Raymi or Festival of the Sun every 24th June.

Pukapukara Archaeological Complex
The complex contains several rooms, inner plazas, aqueducts, vantage points, and pathways. It
might have served as a tambo or rest and lodging area. According to the tale, each time the Inca
was able to go to Tambomachay, he would be accompanied by a large cortège, which stayed at
Pukapukara. It is also called a fort because of its fortified-city appearance.

well in advance of your planned date of travel.
Attention for all non-US citizens travelling through the USA: All Visa Waiver Program travellers must present a machine-readable passport at the
U.S. port of entry to enter the U.S. without a visa; otherwise a U.S. visa is required. See important information the Visa Waiver Program here: Visa
Waiver Each traveller is responsible for having the correct travel documentation.
Health:
You should always contract your attending physician before departure to enquire about which vaccinations are required in the country or countries you
will be travelling to.
It is recommended to be updated with the universal vaccines (diphtheria, tetanus, polio, pertussis, hepatitis B). Traditional vaccines against yellow
fever, typhoid and hepatitis A are recommended. The vaccine against yellow fever is required for entry to most Latin American countries. Vaccination
against typhoid is recommended for extended stays and hepatitis A for those who are not naturally immune. Vaccination against rabies is
recommended for long stays (especially expatriates).
Climate in Bolivia:
The climate and weather in Bolivia vary as greatly as the country's many regions, although when speaking of weather, Bolivians typically refer only to
two seasons (the rainy season and dry season) as usually there is no gradual entry into either winter or summer. Changes in temperatures and
weather are typically as brusque as the changes in topography from one region to the next. Temperatures depend primarily on elevation.
Tropical Lowlands: To the East (from Pando, down through Beni and Santa Cruz to parts of northern Tarija) the climate is usually very hot, humid and
often rainy between late September and May. December and January are the hottest months of the year. Summer days are humid and sticky. Nights
are warm and musky, often filled with a moist fruity aroma as winds carry the scent of the tropical jungle into the cities.
Northwest Valleys: The country’s northwest valley region (called the Yungas, or the jungles, North of La Paz going toward Pando) is surprisingly hot
and humid, considering the altitude. It is the cloudiest, rainiest and most humid region of Bolivia. In this region the Bolivian climate and local weather
are similar to that of the eastern lowlands of Santa Cruz with even more precipitation per year. Temperatures drop as the elevation increases. At
altitudes higher than 2000 meters above sea level it sometimes snows and at 4600 meters the mountains are permanently capped by snow. Above
5500 meters the climate is similar to that of Polar Regions and there are some glaciers present.
Central Valleys: The central valley’s - Cochabamba, parts of Chuquisaca and western Tarija - are temperate to cool. Temperatures are pleasant during
the day, but it can get quite cold at night. This region, although high (averaging 1200-1500 meters above sea level) is also rather humid. Bolivia’s
valleys are very fertile and covered in dense forest. The rainy season is long and sustained.
Altiplano and higher: On the shores of Lake Titicaca, and higher (Potosí), temperatures can reach a balmy 27°C/80°F at midday, but normally by early
afternoon a sweater is necessary and the nights are cold. Because of the altitude, the sun feels especially strong here and sunscreen should be worn
throughout the entire day. On the Altiplano the winds are cold and harsh and moisturizer or sunscreen (and Chap Stick) are important to prevent both
sunburn and windburn. Temperatures in and around the Salar de Uyuni and the South Lipez can drop to -20°C/-4°F.
Travellers arriving from the Northern Hemisphere must remember that the seasons are reversed in Bolivia. Keep in mind that in the Southern
Hemisphere seasons (and climate) are reversed, or the “opposite” of those in the North, with the hottest months (our summer) being November to
February and the coldest months (our winter) May to July.
Climate in Peru:
The climate of Peru is very diverse, with a large variety of climates and microclimates, including 28 of the 32 world climates. Such diversity is chiefly
conditioned by the presence of the Andes Mountains and the cold Humboldt Current. In general, the climate on the coast is subtropical with very little
rainfall. The Andes Mountains observe a cool-to-cold climate with rainy summers and very dry winters. The eastern lowlands present an Equatorial
climate with hot weather and rain distributed all year long.

The costa has moderate temperatures, low precipitations, and high humidity, except for its warmer, wetter northern reaches.
In the sierra, rain is frequent during summer, and temperature and humidity diminish with altitude up to the frozen peaks of the Andes.
The selva is characterized by heavy rainfall and high temperatures, except for its southernmost part, which has cold winters and seasonal rainfall.
Peru has three main climatic zones: the tropical Amazon jungle to the east; the arid coastal desert to the west; and the Andean mountains and
highlands in the middle of the country. In the Andes, which have altitudes over 3500m, average daily temperatures fall below 10°C/50°F and overnight
temperatures can dip well below freezing.
From June to August is the dry season in the mountains and altiplano (Andean plateau); the wettest months are from December to March. It rains all
the time in the hot and humid rainforest, but the driest months there are from June to September. However, even during the wettest months from
December to May, it rarely rains for more than a few hours at a time. Along the arid coastal strip, the hot months are from December through March.
Some parts of the coastal strip see rain rarely, if at all. From April to November, Lima and other areas by the Pacific Ocean are enclosed in garúa
(coastal fog, mist or drizzle) as warmer air masses off the desert drift over the ocean where the cold Humboldt Current hits.
Support Team:
Specialised local English speaking guides for the visits in each region – this means a different guide for each region or part of the tour. The reason that
we have chosen this option is that a local specialised guide will always have a greater knowledge of his or her region than a guide who knows “a bit of
everything”. This assures that you get the most out of any visit! All transport and transfers between towns, bus or train stations, airports and
accommodation will be undertaken by a Spanish speaking driver.
Transport:
Transfers and transport are undertaken in bus, 4x4 vehicles, minibus, plane or boat depending on your itinerary. The vehicles used will depend on the
size of the group and the nature of the expeditions. Arrival and departure times by bus, plane, boat, train or car are subject to changes, local
celebrations, public holidays, opening hours of museums and/or sights, climatic conditions etc may lead us to change the itinerary and under no
circumstances can Lipiko Tours be held responsible for any delays.
Air transport: If you have chosen a tour with international flights your tickets are booked and confirmed based on availability at the time of reservation
and in case of non-availability this may involve an extra fee. If you book at the last minute the choice of offers and dates are limited. Plan ahead and
book well in advance! This allows us to guarantee you a low price.
All the companies we use are safe and reliable and the prices we quote are "tax included", that is to say including airport taxes (except South America
where in some countries you will have to pay between 20-30 €uro per person per flight depending on the country of departure, directly at the airport.
The taxes included in your ticket are subject to change at any time so even though it rare (fortunately) it is possible that we have to ask you for a
supplement in case of changes.
It is very likely that we issue your tickets directly once you register for a tour. These tickets are often neither modifiable
nor
refundable
nor
exchangeable. Be sure to provide us with your names and surnames exactly as they are written on your passport. In case of transcripts errors we
have to book a new flight which would be at your expense. On another note in case you cancel your participation on a tour with Lipiko Tours we would
be obliged to charge you not only the cancellation fee of the tour but also the expenses specific to the cancellation of your flight tickets. Please
understand that these costs may be reimbursed by your insurance if the reason for your cancellation is guaranteed by said contract.
Accommodation:
Accommodation is either in hotel, hostal, eco lodge, shelter, home stay, bus or camping depending on your program. Accommodation is comfortable
for nights in hotel/hostel however when sleeping in shelters there is very little comfort; shelters have dorms (6 people in one room), shared toilet and
bathroom and no heating. For home stays even though you might be able to get your own room you will share the toilet and there is usually no hot
water. The beds will have sheets and blankets but it’s always best to bring a sleeping bag especially during winter. For nights in camping we use T3
tents for 2 people – so it doesn’t get too crowded! If you are travelling alone and there is no other person willing to share a room with you for nights in
hotels you are obliged to book a single room.
The hotels we book in bigger towns are usually located in the centre and are usually close to sights of interest. This means that you can easily walk to
the historic sites and museums. In some regions we chose small hostals, “residentials” or home stay to facilitate meetings with the locals. Comfort is
often rather basic but you have a better chance to interact with the local people, share their experiences and learn about the cultural differences. The
local hotel standards are not the same as our western standard, therefore a 3* hotel in a big city has all the necessary comfort but will be a lower
category. In some areas hot water and power cuts are possible.
Attention: We will only provide you with a list of hotels approx. 3 weeks before departure as depending on the departure date hotels might change.
Heating and hot water:
In large cities heating and hot water is usually not a problem and is readily available. Eco Lodges in the countryside are often equipped with solar
panels to heat water but of course it’s possible that they are not working and the heating neither. For nights in shelters or home stays there is neither
hot water nor heating. Very remote hotels (i.e. South Lipez and Salar de Uyuni) the supply of hot water and heating is not always regular. In case of

problems or failure of this type of service (heating and hot water) Lipiko Tours cannot be held responsible and we recommend you to contact the
reception in the hotel to make sure that water and/or heating is either turned on or repaired in case it’s not working.
Meals:
For lunch (where included) it will either be a lunch box or a hot meal and for dinner (where included) you will be served a hot meal. Drinks are not
included and as a precaution you should never drink tap water – only bottled. During the discovery tours it’s usually easy to purchase bottled drinks.
Porterage:
Your luggage will be transported either by plane, car, boat, and bus or carried by mules/porters (during the treks). It is important that you limit your
luggage to 20kg/44lb during the discovery tours and to 8kg/18lb during treks and mountain climbing tours. In some cases for national flights the
baggage limit is 15kg/33lb. In case you have more than the allowed limit you will have to pay the surcharge directly upon check-in.
Special trek: If the luggage limit advised by Lipiko Tours is not respected the customer is responsible for any extra charges i.e. payment of extra
porters and/or mules and any other expenses that occur because of this (mule driver, food and accommodation of mule drivers and/or porters). The
payment for extra mules and/or porters will have to be paid upfront directly to the person in charge of the tour.
Electricity:
Bolivia 220/230V* 50 Hz A & C * La Paz & Viacha 115V
Peru 220V* 60 Hz* A & C * Talara 110/220V; Arequipa 50 Hz
List of plug and socket types
Photos/Videos: Make sure you bring extra memory cards and batteries. It is not always easy to get batteries charged so try to limit the use of
functions that consume a lot of energy.
Travelling budget:
In Bolivia the local currency is the Bolivian Boliviano (BOB). The Boliviano is not easily found outside Bolivia therefore it is better to bring U$D or €uro
which can be changed easily (be careful not to bring bills that are in some way damaged) or use your credit card to withdraw cash.
In Peru the local currency is the Peruvian Nuevo Sol (PEN). The Nuevo Sol is not easily found outside Peru therefore it is better to bring U$D or €uro
which can be changed easily (be careful not to bring bills that are in some way damaged) or use your credit card to withdraw cash.
Life is reasonable in Bolivia and Peru. It is not obligatory to leave a tip (“propina”) but it is of course highly appreciated. The amount you wish to tip
depends on the quality of the service but you should calculate approx. 30 U$D per person per week.
YOUR PERSONAL EQUIPMENT
Clothing:
Which clothes to pack obviously depends on the country and area you will be visiting as well as the type of travel you will be undertaken. Below we
have prepared a list which includes travel to both cold and hot areas.
When packing your bags don't forget that your clothes should be breathable and offer both isolation and protection.
Here a non-exhaustive list:

3 T-shirts (breathable)

5 pairs of underwear (warm and breathable)

1-2 long sleeved casual shirts (i.e. fleece)

2 trekking trousers – the ones you can zip off at the legs are perfect and can be used as shorts.

1 fleece jacket

1 thick jacket

1 waterproof jacket

Warm hat, scarf and gloves

Warm, long underwear

Sunhat


NB: You might not need all of the above mentioned material and you should adjust the list to your particular tour.
Luggage:
You should divide our belongings into 2 bags; a backpack in which you will carry the things you need during the day and a second bigger bag which
you will have access to in the evenings and mornings. During the tour your luggage can be transported by car, bus, mules etc. and should be adapted
to these transport conditions. Lipiko Tours cannot be held responsible in case of wear and tear.
Unfortunately dishonest people can be found everywhere so you should always take care of your luggage and personal documents. Where available
we suggest you use the safety boxes in the hotels. Lipiko Tours cannot be held responsible in case of any loss of property.
Last but not least: the unforeseen happens – and nowhere more than in South America - your flight might be late or the bus brakes down!
Remember that life works at a different pace here, and people do not have the same sense of timekeeping as at home - people do not expect
you to be on time! Try to accept this as part of the charm of travelling in a relaxed country. We always include extra time to allow for these
things, sometimes too much and sometimes not enough; in both cases we try to
