2007 Rosenburg Concours - Lone Star Region Porsche Club of
began arriving in a steady stream This provided another morning ritual to be played out, plenty of exercise, for the few folks who were dusting and acting as gate guards that had to do the LeMans dash to let in the shiny combatants. You would think parking cars would be easy, but when six in a row show up and they are all Red, you have to use dispersal tactics! Sylvia had pressgang her loyal boyfriend Phil into helping deliver to the event the boxes of wonderful detail kits from Griot's Garage that were rewards to those who took the time to pre-reregister. In addition the large Lone Star Region PCA flag needed to be strung and Jim found a ladder and soon had it flying high. Story/Photos: Andrew Barry As cars continued to arrive it was great to see old friends but even more rewarding to see so many new faces. Having been a long suffering member of the Concours committee for 8 years, and having been at events when the committee was the event, new faces are the validation for all the planning. Well, as with every concours in the last 15 months the whole concours committee was on tenterhooks, checking every weather forecast with the hopes of a rain free period. It was quickly obvious that depending on what type of weather you wanted you just needed to pick the station that delivered your desired outcome! All that said it looked like the rain would skirt to the North and we would have a mild cloudy day for the event. For the seasoned hands in the art of concours this was a good outcome, because a clear sunny day quickly becomes a sweltering frying pan when you stand on concrete, polish cloth in hand! Being a Sunday morning the traffic on route to the venue was light and arriving in the sleepy hamlet of Rosenberg it quickly became apparent this was to be one well orchestrated event. The Rosenberg Chamber of Commerce not only provided "goodie bags" but had arranged to have a street blocked off for us to use for the event, and the barricades were up blocking not only both ends of the street but also the alleyways that cut between the buildings. As one of the locals told me "people just love to go where they aren't supposed to! " With the street closed to auto traffic, one could wander amongst the numerous Porsches on display. Jim Zwalen "chief registrar" was already setting up on the tables that were also kindly provided for us, and at the corner of the street at the State Farm office, Janice Vyoral very kindly set up pots of steaming coffee and iced water and then proceeded to bring out plates of cookies. What a treat, up early and a good Samaritan providing the all important elixir to get the day going. Nearby two or three cars were already getting the finishing touches to dispel the last grains of dust from the trip in, and then like some silent concours bell had been rung, Porsches By 10:30am the street on both sides had filled up quickly and by the time we were ready for the drivers meeting we were up to 50 cars flanking either side of the street. Sylvia greeted the assembled throng and after introductions and thanks to the sponsors, Griots Garage the rules of engagement were spelled out. Rags down was called for 11:00 am and while the hopeful dashed off to finish the last spot of chrome, boy did I mention the pollen that was gently settling as we waited for the "off"?! There was a last minute "pressgang" for a few additional judges 12 because with 50 cars one team wouldn't have finished before sundown. Then it was rags down and the judges deployed. Its amazing that no matter how much you polish and clean there is always that pesky speck of lint that must have floated in when the doors were opened, or that errant coin that fell behind the seat! All in all the level of presentation was top notch and it was great to see there was lots of information and tip sharing after the judges had passed from old hands to the new. The judges finished up by 1:30pm and so it was off to the "Another Time Soda Fountain & Café" owned by Renee Butler and her brother, Michael Barcak for lunch and award presentations. With the tremendous turn out we essentially took over the entire cafe and “Have fun in your garage!” Rosenberg Concours Results Place Class Entrant Points 1st P2 Richard Jackson 290 1st 2nd 3rd P3 P3 P3 Gus Alverz Thomas Erdmann Mark Wilson 240 228 218 1st 2nd 3rd P4 P4 P4 Jim Murray Andy Kay Chris Adams 372 355 341 1st 2nd 3rd P5 P5 P5 Burnell Curtis Tom Bay Andrew Barry 370 367 299 1st 2nd 3rd P6 P6 P6 Jim Zwalen John Denniger Kevin Peters 361 355 327 1st P7 Steve Farnham 270 2nd 3rd P7 P7 Mark Weisser Allan Caskie 259 244 1st P8 Mike Hardage 348 Peoples Choice Awards Favorite Porsche: Jim Heimer Favorite Color: James Mueller 13 Best of Show Furthest Travel Award (Austin) 2001 996 Cabriolet 987 930 Turbo A young concours participant and Porsche enthusiast seems a bit concerned that she can’t reach the pedals! The scores were tallied and the winners by class identified, and accolades heaped upon the victors by the assembled masses. In addition to the preregistration goodies, our sponsor for the event Griots Garage kindly donated some great gifts ranging from polish cloths to orbital polishes and mega detail kits. Theses were raffled off and the ticket holders anxiously awaited their number to be called! The event was scheduled to run until 3pm and we were done and dusted by 2:40pm, so there was time to visit the Railroad museum across the street and to stroll once more by all the shiny steeds in the "Street stable" What was also apparent as one wondered back to the Porsche coral was the number of Porsches that were "loitering on the streets all around. With the "drive by" cars there were probably close to 60 Porsches in Rosenberg, I think probably a local record! Another fine example of German engineering at it’s best! As I reflect on the day I am warmed by the fact that we had so many first timers and by the looks and comments from the passers by who were reveling in the beauty and spectacle of the event. It is after all about "The People" and the opportunity to share a passion for all things Porsche. This 911 Turbo will make any Porsche enthusiast heart skip a beat! 15
