The CARA Report is a publication of the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate. For about 20 years, CARA has conducted extensive studies, reviewed other’s research and tried to help us understand what and why certain events have happened. They have researched for the best practices from the vast religious community of believers. In their latest issue, CARA analyses a survey conducted by the National Congregation Study, that Catholic Parishes make up about 6% of the religious congregations in the United States (18,000 out of 300,000) Parishes. This 6% of congregations, however, has 28% of the church going membership. In general Catholic Parishes are much larger than non-Catholic. A Catholic Parish is typically younger than a mainline Protestant Congregation and a bit older than Evangelical Congregations. The median annual per capita financial contributions decreases as congregational size increases. For example, an Evangelical Congregation of 100 adults receives an average per capita annual contribution of $1,750, while a congregation of 400 receives $1,480 and a congregation of 1,000 receives $1,140. The equivalent numbers for Catholic Parishes are $850, $720 and $550, about half of their fellow churchgoers. (SVdP Parish average is $624 or about $12 per week.) A white Protestant Church with 500 adults has an average of 3.1 full-time ministers or one minister for every 159 people, while the Catholic Church of this size has an average of only 1.9 full-time ministerial staff — one for every 263 people. Of course there are many differences due to theologies, the understanding of the Incarnation, the very nature of what a Church is and significant various interpretations of Scripture. These differences are, of course, more important than the above. ********************************************* I did discover some other research that may not be as well researched as CARA takes care to publish. It seems that someone has found a graphic description of teens texting. You may have observed them as well. Pax et bonum, Msgr. "We constantly need to contemplate the mystery of mercy. It is a wellspring of joy, serenity, and peace. Our salvation depends on it." ~ Pope Francis Save Lives — Help Sort Medical Supplies Pope Francis invites us to think about mercy anew as the "act by which God comes to meet us" but also mercy as the "fundamental law that dwells in the heart of every person who looks sincerely into the eyes of his brothers and sisters on the path of life". He invites us to live by this mercy in our parishes and lives, to forgive others as well as to seek reconciliation. He challenges us to understand mercy and justice as "two dimensions of the same reality" on the way of conversion of the sinner towards love. What will your vocation call be like? Will Jesus call you directly, as he did Peter? Or will he knock you off your horse, like Paul? Many of the vocation stories on the CD reviewed in this article were the latter kind, examples of people who had risen so high, or fallen so low, that God struck them boldly to get their attention. For others of us, God’s call may sound something like the parish priest or the St. Vincent de Paul community thanking us for our commitment, then asking … have we ever considered becoming a deacon? Deacon Gus, who realized his calling in this way, recently shared some of his thoughts on the diaconate. Whereas priests serve in persona Christi; deacons are called instead to be Christ-like in serving others, in ways both large and small. God welcomes all personalities to the immense joy of serving others in this vocation, asking only that you be sound and resolute in your faith, and willing to take on the serious study of His nature and Church. Read up on local diaconate requirements at http://www.archgh.org/Diaconal-Formation. Brought to you by the SVDP Vocations Committee. Pray for Vocations! 9 WATCH YOUR POSTURE Our posture is often a tip-off to our hospitality and reverence for the Lord. Note the actions of Abraham as he greeted the Lord in the presence of three men who appeared near his tent. He ran from the entrance of the tent to greet them. He bowed to the ground as he met them. He and Sarah, his wife, hastened to prepare a meal and bring food and water to their guests. In the Gospel story, Jesus’ friend Mary sat at his feet in order to listen to him speak. How do we welcome and reverence the Lord? What do our actions show? Do we remember the Lord’s presence in the Blessed Sacrament? How do we welcome the Lord in the scripture readings? How do we acknowledge his presence in our brothers and sisters, both at Mass and afterwards? Whether we kneel, stand, or sit in the Lord’s presence, may our hearts and minds always be attuned to him. The collapsed society had three basic divisions: those who work, those who fight, and those who pray. There wasn’t a great deal of movement among the ranks, yet one way to move out of the workers and the fighters was in the direction of the folks who prayed. These were the First Estate, the clergy. One of the key persons in any manor or village was the priest. He could read, at least a bit, and so was the source for pronouncements and news from government and Church. He was assigned to celebrate the sacraments frequently and in conformance with certain rules. Seminaries did not exist before the Reformation. Astute Protestant reformers then forced the Catholic world toward a more educated and able clergy. Before that, young men apprenticed with a priest to learn the essentials, and would be presented to the bishop for ordination. Other priests emerged from the university system, where students were required to be invested as clerics. Still others were monks, ordained not so much for ministry outside the monastic walls, but to offer Mass only for the intentions of the community’s benefactors. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S.
