Donegal County Archives has been fortunate to receive donations and loans of archives
of both local and national significance over the years. The decision by the Donegal
Board of the GAA to deposit its large collection of historical material to the County
Archives was a foresighted and generous one. Donegal County Archives is all the richer
in receiving its first major sporting collection which is of significance for the twentieth
century history of Donegal and Irish sport. Furthermore, it must be acknowledged
that this collection is also of great importance to people or institutions interested in
studying the social history of the county through turbulent and crucial periods in Irish
life over many decades. The collection’s contents are many and varied, from financial
records to minutes of meetings, from photographs to posters and programmes, and
are from all parts of the county.
The Archives Service, Donegal County Council would like the thank the County Board
of the GAA for the deposit of their archives with the Archives Service with special
thanks to Charlie O’Donnell, former secretary of the Donegal County Board.
Donegal County Archives is delighted to be the recipient of this collection and would
particularly like to acknowledge the generosity of the Donegal Board of the GAA in
depositing the archives. The Archives Service would like to acknowledge the hard
work put into this project by Ms Ciara Joyce who researched and wrote the booklet
and listed the entire collection.

Author’s Note:
The following essay is only an introduction to the GAA in Donegal.
More detailed accounts have been comprehensively researched and
told by local historians and published in local and in national publications.
I am heavily indebted to those authors for some of the information
contained in this booklet.
Only a small number of GAA officials have been mentioned in the text, those whose
service is noted due to the number of years serving in a senior position. The GAA of
course has been served diligently by large numbers of dedicated volunteers over the
years, too numerous to mention in this brief introduction.

THE FOUNDATION OF THE GAELIC ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION
On the 1st of November 1884 a meeting took place in Hayes Commercial Hotel, Thurles,
County Tipperary. In attendance were men of varying backgrounds and interests,
who all had the desire to establish a national sporting body for the preservation and
promotion of Gaelic Games. This historic meeting resulted in the establishment of the
Gaelic Athletic Association for the Preservation and Cultivation of National Pastimes,
An Cumann Lúthchleas Gael.
Ireland in the late 19th Century:
A number of issues dominated politics during the later 19th century in Ireland: the Land
War, Parnell and the Irish Parliamentary Party, Home Rule and the rise of Nationalism.
Hand in hand with events in the political arena a cultural renaissance was taking place
in Ireland. This movement, called the Gaelic revival, included aspects of Gaelic culture,
from language and literature, folklore and history to music and traditional sports.
The formation of this national identity, which had its roots in ancient Ireland was
generally romanticised by the literary movement of the time spearheaded by writers
such as W.B. Yeats and Lady Gregory. This image was of Ireland as a Gaelic nation with
its own traditions, and would lead to the establishment of a number of organisations
promoting this ideal in 19th century Ireland.
The Gaelic Union was established in 1880 by Ulick Bourke (1829-87), one of the
new idealists who sought to preserve Irish identity through the Irish language. The
Gaelic Union would go on to form the foundations of the Gaelic League established
by Douglas Hyde and Eoin MacNeill in 1893. The League aimed to promote the Irish
language but also to unite Irish people of different religions and political loyalties in
cultural activity. They believed that all members of Irish society, regardless of religion
or political persuasion could be united under the common banner of language
and culture. The Gaelic League spread successfully throughout Ireland and it is not
surprising that many members of the GAA in the early years were also members of the
Gaelic Union and League, with many of its members becoming founders of county
boards of the GAA across the country. Many of the founding members of the GAA also
had fenian sympathies or were supporters of the Home Rule movement.

During this period there was a general fear
of the anglicisation of Ireland and that native
traditions were being lost. Organised sport
emerged in England in the late 19th century.
With migration back and forth between
Ireland and Britain, English codes and games
began replacing traditional games in Ireland.
Soccer and cricket were popular among the
middle classes and the native style of football
was in decline. It was against this background
that the GAA was formed in November 1884.
Michael Cusack had long been involved with
Gaelic games in Dublin and called for the Irish
to take ownership of their own games. With
the support of Maurice Davin they called the
first meeting.
Michael Cusack (NUIG)
Cusack (1847-1906) was a school teacher
from County Clare and himself a good
athlete. While living in Dublin he became disillusioned with the established sports
organisations, which excluded working people and did not include traditional sports.
He himself was a native Irish speaker and a member of the Gaelic Union. In 1883, he
helped establish the Dublin Hurling Club and later the Metropolitan Hurling Club.
He increasingly began to believe that Irish sport needed its own organisation and
drew support for his belief from a number of people including Maurice Davin. Davin
(1842-1927) was a well known and successful athlete, born in County Tipperary. He
supported Cusack’s call for a Gaelic games organisation and chaired the first meeting
in Thurles, becoming the GAA’s first president. A natural administrator, he drafted the
first constitution of the new body as well as drawing up early rules for football and
hurling. Davin’s fame as an athlete (he had dominated Irish athletics from 1875-9) no
doubt helped the organisation in those early months. Davin was also a moderate in his
views on national politics, which helped balance out Cusack’s strong and sometimes
overwhelming personality. There were also a number of I.R.B. members at the first
meeting, despite an effort to keep politics out of the organisation and to make it allinclusive. In attendance in Hayes hotel were: John Wyse-Power (County Kildare, editor
of the Leinster Leader), P.J. O’Ryan (County Kilkenny, Solicitor), John McKay (Reporter
11

with the Cork Examiner), J.K. Braken (County Tipperary, Building Contractor), Thomas
St. George McCarthy (Inspector in the RIC) and Patrick Duffy (County Mayo). The group
also received 60 letters of support from people who could not attend the meeting
including one from Michael Davitt.
At the first meeting it was decided that the new sporting organisation would be
open to all Irishmen, regardless of political persuasion, although its choice of patrons
clearly indicated its political leanings. Thomas William Croke (1824-1902), Archbishop
of Cashel and Emly; Charles Stewart Parnell (1846-1891), MP and member of the Irish
Parliamentary Party and Michael Davitt (1846-1906) founder of the Land League, were
invited to become patrons of the Association and undoubtedly their support helped
greatly with its success in the early years.
The GAA spread quickly and by 1887 there were 600 clubs affiliated, with Cusack
travelling widely to promote the organisation. One of the reasons for the success of
the organisation was Davin’s decision to divide the organisation along county and
parish boundaries in 1887. This led to county and parish rivalries which helped bolster
support for teams and promote pride in the successes of local teams. Clubs were based
in local communities, giving them a strong footing from the beginning. Players played
for fun, to escape the stress of everyday life, but also for the honour of representing
their parish, becoming local heroes in the process. The support of the Catholic Church
and Archbishop Croke’s patronage also helped.
Early games held by the organisation showed up regional differences in Gaelic games
and the need to standardise rules. The long tradition of hurling in Ireland had been
in decline since the famine, and was still badly affected by emigration. Gaelic football
was an amalgamation of a variety of traditional games, which was standardised for the
first time by the Association. To turn traditional games into modern sports rules were
drawn up, which were gradually accepted by teams across the country. Although
athletics and handball were included in the GAA intended programme of games,
they became overshadowed by hurling and football. Eventually athletics in Ireland
were taken over by the National Athletic and Cycling Association (NACA) which
was established in 1922, and the GAA focused on its more popular games. Ongoing
championships encouraged pre-existing teams to join the GAA, as they needed to be
affiliated to participate in competitions, therefore the numbers increased. Growth was
so rapid that by 1887 there was a need to set up county committees.
12

The first All-Ireland Championship took place in 1887, with Limerick winning the
football title and Tipperary the hurling.
The early years of the organisation and the spread of the GAA were not without its
problems. Cusack’s confrontational manner had a tendency to alienate people and he
was removed as secretary of the organisation in 1886. Davin also resigned in 1889 due
to the increasing influence of the I.R.B. in the Association. He later served as a member
of the Tipperary County Board in 1897. The organisation also came under criticism for
its nationalist leanings. Rule 21, a ban on British security forces playing Gaelic games,
was instituted in 1886 and not lifted until 2001.
The biggest blow to the organisation in the 19th century however was the Parnell
‘split’ in the Irish Parliamentary Party, demonstrating how closely the fortunes of the
Association were linked to politics. Parnell’s naming in a divorce petition by Captain
O’Shea against his wife Katherine caused a huge scandal in Ireland. There was a split in
the party between those who supported him and those who sought his resignation.
This split extended to members of the GAA and caused a rift in the organisation that
was slow to heal. A number of Parnell supporters left the Association, which meant
that progress was slow in the 1890s, even after Parnell’s death in 1891.
Early years of the 20th century:
In the early years of the 20th century Gaelic games continued to increase in popularity
and the games themselves took on a more familiar format, closely resembling the
modern games. In 1905 the Railway Cup began followed by the Sigerson Cup (University
Football Championship) and the Fitzgibbon Cup (University Hurling Championship) in
1911. In 1910 side posts (small posts five yards on either side of the goal posts) were
abolished, followed in 1913 by the reduction of the number of players to 15 a-side.
Most significantly, in 1913, the GAA purchased a field on Jones Road, Dublin, for the
development of its headquarters, which they decided to name after the Association’s
first patron, Archbishop Croke.
The growth of the organisation in the 20th century was again stifled by social and
economic factors beyond its control and external politics with the beginning of World
War I in 1914. Many members were also members of the Irish Volunteers and supported
John Redmond’s call to join the British army in support of Home Rule for Ireland,
leaving the playing field for the front. Despite this a national day of demonstration of

the games was organised to help promote the Association. This was held on the 4th of
August 1918 and became known as ‘Gaelic Sunday’.
The spread of the railways, with the opening of new lines also helped the growth of
clubs. It enabled clubs to travel for inter-county games and to access remoter parts of
the country with greater ease. This was especially true in Donegal. Railway companies
provided special trains, laid on for matches, enabling people to travel, with special
fares offered as an enticement.
Later 20th century:
Despite the years of unrest brought by the War of Independence (1919-21) and
the Civil War (1922-23), support for the GAA remained strong. In 1924 the Tailteann
Games were held in Dublin to celebrate national independence. Croke Park was
completely refurbished for the event and the games were a great success, the two
week programme of Gaelic games drawing in huge crowds.
In 1926 national leagues at inter-county level for football and hurling were introduced
and by 1935, 1600 clubs were affiliated. However, the GAA continued to be criticised
for what was seen as the promotion of a sectarian ethos. In the 1930s increasing efforts
were made to enforce Rule 27, which forbade members of the GAA from playing in
or even attending ‘foreign’ games (This rule was not abolished until 1971). Vigilance
committees were established by county boards, to report on members breaking
this rule. In 1938 Douglas Hyde, President of Ireland, was removed as patron of the
organisation for attending a soccer match in his official capacity as President. This
ban only helped to alienate sections of the community and to further associate the
organisation with extreme nationalism. Many officials over the years objected to the
exclusion of foreign games. Aspects of these excluding rules were relaxed in 1971
but it was not until 2007 that the ban on playing of games other than Gaelic games
on GAA grounds was temporarily lifted (Rule 42), allowing the playing of rugby and
soccer at Croke Park.
Irish Language:
From the beginning the GAA has been associated with the Irish language with a
crossover of membership with the Gaelic Union. Cusack’s insistence on the use of
the language by the Association has created a relationship at official level which has
also been encouraged at club level by officials and players. Irish is used in reports,
correspondence, at functions and by players accepting trophies.
14
Suggestions for promoting the Irish language in the Club
Women and the GAA:
Women have been involved in Gaelic games from the early years, although not in an
official capacity. Many of these women were members of the Gaelic Union, similar to
their male counterparts.
Camogie clubs were established in Ireland in the early years of the 20th century with
practices taking place in the Phoenix Park in Dublin. By 1904, five camogie clubs were
playing in an organised league in Dublin.
On the 25th of February 1905 An Cumann Camógaíochta was established, at North
Fredrick Street, Dublin, with Máire Ní Chinnéide elected as its first president. The
spread of the organisation was slow and it was decided to re-launch the Cumann
in 1911 when Eleanor Dowager Countess of Fingal was appointed President and the
game spread with greater success.
The first official inter-county game was played in the summer of 1912 between Dublin
and Louth, and the Ashbourne Cup, the oldest camogie competition, was established
in 1915.
15
Archives of the Donegal Gaelic Athletic Association County Board
Although the organisation was
growing it was badly funded
and progress was slow. It was
not until the second re-launch
of the Cumann Camógaíochta
in 1932 that the organisation
really established itself as a
national body. The first camogie
All-Ireland
championship
took place in 1932 and was
won by Dublin. By the 1960s
camogie was well established
as a national sport, with leagues,
championships, school and
university competitions.
THE GAELIC ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION IN DONEGAL
Long before the famous meeting at Hayes Hotel in County Tipperary, Gaelic games had
been played in Donegal. The origins of these games are uncertain but the presence
of a 15th century grave slab in Clonca, near Carndonagh, depicting a camán and ball
indicate a long tradition of the original forms of the game.
Ladies Camogie Team
Ninety years after the establishment of the GAA the Ladies Gaelic Football Association
was established on the 18th of July 1974, in Hayes Hotel, Thurles. Ladies Gaelic football
has gone from strength to strength with growing support for the games, helped no
doubt by the sponsorship and televising of the games by TG4.
The GAA today:
The GAA is Ireland’s largest and most successful sporting organisation, which now
has a worldwide presence, with clubs established by the Irish diaspora throughout
the world. Many would say that the Association is intrinsic to Irish identity and most
communities. Clubs are based in the communities and survive only because of the hard
work of an army of volunteers with the GAA providing a social outlet for the community
in return. GAA clubs are open to all, and the amateur nature of the organisation means
that there are teams for all levels of ability. The social life that surrounds the clubs also
means that those not interested in playing the games themselves become involved
in events such as Scór (cultural competition established in 1969 for clubs to promote
Irish culture, dancing and singing) and the under-age competitions, bringing children
and their families in contact with the Association. Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta also
brings together people from gaeltacht areas, to share their common love of the games
and the Irish language.
16
Archives of the Donegal Gaelic Athletic Association County Board
There are reports of clubs in East Donegal as early 1888 in Burt and
Newtowncunningham. These clubs played regional variations of the games different
from the other clubs that also existed in the west of the county in places like Ardara,
Inver, Kilcar and Donegal Town. In these areas camán, an early variation on the modern
hurling game, was more popular than football. Camán, in east Donegal used a special
type of hurley stick, known as the Burt hurley which had a narrow boss and ridge
along the heel, whereas in the southern areas of the County a broad boss hurl was
used.
The earliest clubs established included the Burt Hibernians in 1888 as well as Cahir O’s
in Buncrana. In 1899 a Gaelic football club was established in Bundoran called Irish
Hearts. These early teams looked to Derry, where a County Board had been established
in 1888; in fact the Burt Hibernians took part in the Derry hurling championship in
1889.
The foundation of the GAA in 1884 had little impact in Donegal. Thurles was a long
way from the North West and with poor communication and infrastructure Donegal
had closer links to Scotland than it did to Munster.
The First County Board
Like the GAA nationally, the foundation of the GAA in Donegal had its roots in the Gaelic
League. Seumas MacManus of Mountcharles, the well known writer and secretary of
the Donegal Town branch of the Gaelic League, began a press campaign to bolster
support for the establishment of the GAA in Donegal. His campaign was supported
by the local clergy, which helped greatly. MacManus called the first meeting, which
was held in MacIntyre’s Hotel (known as Cassie Mac’s), Mountcharles, on the 23rd
of October 1905. MacManus chaired the meeting and the board were elected. The
newly formed GAA chose the Rev. Dr. Patrick O’Donnell, Bishop of Raphoe as patron,
Dr. Edward Maguire P.P. was elected president of the board. Other officials included

secretaries Alex McDyre, N.T. Kilraine (Glenties) and J. Dowds (Stranorlar), treasurer
Rev. Charles Boyce C.C. and board members Edward Daly (Bundoran), John McGahern
(Donegal Town) and P.M. Gallagher (Donegal Town).
The County Board was divided into two for administrative purposes, east and west,
and teams were given three weeks to affiliate with the newly established Board before
leagues were drawn up. The west division included the areas of Croagh, Ardaghy, Inver,
Mountcharles, Bundoran, Killybegs, Ballybofey and Donegal Town. The east division
included Newtowncunningham, Burt, Gweedore, Fahan, Cresslough, Letterkenny and
Churchill. MacManus had rules for playing Gaelic games published in the local press
on the 28th of October 1905, with the Board issuing its manifesto a short while later.
Initially the Association did quite well and early games were well attended. Support
for the organisation was strong in particular in the south west of the county in
Mountcharles, Donegal Town, Bundoran and Ballyshannon and in areas where there
was already good support for organisations such as the Gaelic League, Cummann na
nGaedheal (est. 1900, a nationalist political organisation) and the Ancient Order of
Hibernians. The first football championship was held in 1906 and won by Lámh Deargs
of Letterkenny. The Burt Hibernians won the County Hurling final and went on to win
the Ulster Championship.
Despite the initial good start to the Association, Gaelic games in the county could not
compete with the popularity of soccer. Many Donegal people worked seasonally in
Britain and brought the interest in soccer home with them. The county also presented
many practical problems for the Association. It is physically a large county and transport
was a problem. Board members also found it difficult to find time to attend meetings,
the lifestyle at the time involving long working hours and little leisure time. Donegal
also had other economic problems, with large numbers emigrating, especially among
the youth of the county and the GAA lost these young potential players and supporters.
This is a problem that would always affect the GAA in Donegal. Communication was
also lacking between the two divisional boards in the county and a lack of cohesion
between the activities of the two boards developed. Support from the clergy was also
declining. Dr. Maguire became head of the newly established Saint Eunan’s College in
Letterkenny and due to his commitments there was unable to devote the same time
to the Association. The Rev. Hugh Maguire of Kilcar, who also had other commitments,
replaced him as patron. The GAA, as an official body, began to go into decline.

Seumas MacManus was elected president of the County Board in 1907 but spent
much of his time in America, eventually becoming a Professor at the University of
Notre Dame in 1908. Donegal GAA therefore lost one of its most influential supporters.
The County Board had joined the Ulster Council in 1905 but it is unclear if the board
received any real guidance from the council.
Gaelic games continued as before at local level but without the guidance of a strong
County Board. Competition at county level virtually ground to a halt and a number of
clubs were disbanded. By 1909 the County Board seems to have ceased to exist.
For ten years it looked like the GAA would remain dormant indefinitely in Donegal. The
First World War (1914-1918) did not help the situation, as many young Donegal men
joined up.
The Reconvened County Board
The Ulster Council/Comhairle Uladh had been established in 1903 in Armagh, part
of the overall restructuring of the GAA and the establishment of Provincial Councils.
In 1919 it held its annual convention in Derry and a number of Donegal delegates
attended, sparking an interest in the Association in the county. The County Board
was reconvened and held its first meeting in Letterkenny. Seán O’Flaherty, a native
of Castlefin was elected chairman of the Board and John Curran of Letterkenny was
appointed secretary. At the same time a Letterkenny man, Dr. McGinley, was elected
vice - president of the Ulster Council. The foundation of the Donegal Democrat
newspaper in 1919 helped bolster support for the reformed County Board and its
reporting of the Association’s activities helped raise its profile in the county.
Bundoran won the first County Championship of the reconvened County Board in
1919, having beaten Killygordan after two rematches. Killygordon however were
victorious in the 1920 championship and apart from a break in 1950 and 1966 the
championship has run successfully every year since.
The War of Independence and the Civil War slowed progress of the Association and
the backlog of games that built up over this period was not cleared until 1924. In
the later 1920s however the GAA in Donegal really took off. There was an upsurge
in nationalist feeling during this period and soccer was seen by many as a ‘foreign’
game, with people turning to Gaelic games for the first time. A number of other factors
helped the Association gain a foothold in the community. The establishment of the
20

Garda Síochána brought young men
from around the country to Donegal,
many of them Gaelic games players
or supporters, bringing with them
this tradition. New Clubs were formed
in the county during this decade
including Ardara (1921), Glenties
(1921), Maghery (1923), Kilcar (1924)
and Donegal Young Tír Conaills (1924).
Aodh Ruadh’s of Ballyshannon was
also re-launched in 1924 (originally

of the more prolific clubs during the
years the County Board was dormant. The involvement of national school teachers
also bolstered the numbers in the Association. At a meeting of the County Board in
1937 an appreciation of teachers’ ‘promotion and fostering of our gaelic games’ is
recorded, demonstrating the value of their contribution which was recognised by the
Board. The re-establishment of the Association was also helped by improvements in
communications and transport links in the county. This enabled more people to travel
to games, bringing Gaelic games to a wider audience and establishing it as a popular
pastime.
Seán MacCumhaill
Two teams were established in the twin towns of Ballybofey and Stranorlar in the early
years of the GAA, Éire Ógs in Ballybofey and Sarsfields in Stranorlar. The teams joined
together in 1926 to form Erin’s Hopes, winning the Dr. McGinley cup in 1932 and 1940.
In 1944 the club made efforts to secure a permanent home for its team by purchasing
a field which was in the town boundary of Ballybofey, but the owner was unwilling to
sell. During Civic Week celebrations in 1946, a friendly match was played on the site
between Sligo and Donegal. The match was such a success that a Park Committee was
set up to secure the field from its owner Mark Byrne, who eventually agreed to sell the
site to the GAA.
In May 1949, Seán MacCumhaill, the then secretary of the County Board died.
MacCumhaill, a former teacher from Stranorlar, had become involved in national politics
after witnessing the Bloody Sunday massacre in Croke Park in 1920. This involvement
would continue for the rest of his life. He spent numerous periods in prison for his

activities and went on hunger strike in the Curragh. He was held in Drumboe Castle
during the War of Independence and was again jailed from 1936-1941 for trying to
resurrect a campaign against partition. MacCumhaill brought his high idealism to his
involvement with the GAA in the county. He served as county secretary from 1946 until
his death in 1949 at the age of 48. A local hero, it was decided to name the acquired
grounds in Ballybofey after MacCumhaill. In 1956, the President of the GAA, Mr. Seán
Mac Fearain, officially opened the grounds and a plaque in memory of the late Seán
MacCumhaill was unveiled. Erin’s Hopes also changed its name to MacCumhaills.
MacCumhaill Park is now Donegal GAA’s main grounds along with Fr. Tierney Park,
Ballyshannon and O’Donnell Park, Letterkenny.
Hurling in Donegal
Growing interest in Gaelic football gradually eclipsed the popularity of hurling in
Donegal in the 20th century. Despite this the game survived in the areas where it had
always been strongest, in the east of the county.
Over the years these 19th and early 20th century clubs continued to dominate
the county Hurling club championships, and title holders included Aodh Ruadh’s
(Ballyshannon), which won the championship 1924 and 1925, Letterkenny which won
numerous times in the 1920s and 1930s and Burt, which dominated in the 1950s and
1960s. In more recent times it is Inishowen clubs that have fielded the strongest teams,
including Burt, Naomh Mura and Carndonagh, with Setanta from Killygordon also
coming to the fore. The most recent winners of the County Championship were Seán
MacCumhaills, Ballybofey, which won the title in 2010. At inter-county level Donegal
has had small but no less noteworthy success, particularly at junior level. Burt began
by beating Antrim in the 1906 Hurling championship (the county club champions
representing the county at the time). The Donegal team would again beat Antrim in
the Ulster final in 1923 and 1932 and win Ulster titles in 1947, 1948, 1972, 1989, 2001
and 2003. Donegal continues to play in Division 3 of the National Hurling League and
in the Lory Meagher Cup. In 2011, after reaching the final for the third consecutive year,
Donegal won the Lory Meagher Cup, beating Tyrone in the final, on the 4th of June
with a final score of 2-12 to 0-17.
Members of the Board
The County Board and Donegal GAA were driven forward by a number of officials in
the 1920s, including Seán O’Flaherty, P.J. Ward and John Curran. P.J. Ward of Killybegs
served as chairman of the County Board for this period of growth from 1923-24,
22
Donegal County Board letterhead
followed by Seán Cassidy who served from 1925-1930, by which time the GAA was
firmly established in the heart of the community in Donegal. In 1933, the County Board
reorganised the divisional boards. The County was divided into West Donegal, East
Donegal, South-West Donegal, North Donegal and South Donegal, each with its own
divisional board, demonstrating how complex the administration of the Association
had become, growing continuously in the ten years since the War of Independence.
Members of the board who were prominent in the 1930s include Seán Kennedy
(Secretary 1934-1937, Chairman 1939-1940) and Donal Ward (Secretary 1938-1943)
followed by men such as Seán MacCumhaill in the later 1940s. Hugh Daly would take
over as secretary after the death of Seán MacCumhaill and remains the longest serving
secretary of the County Board, seeing to the administration of the board until his death
in 1973. Seán Conaghan (Glenties) and Seán Cassidy (Dungloe) were both long serving
treasurers of the board from 1926 to 1946. They were followed in the 1950s and 1960s
by other dedicated members, Conall Ferry (Gweedore) and Danny Boyle (Glenties). The
first woman to serve as secretary of the board was Noreen Doherty, who took over the
position in 1991.
Championships
In 1926 the County Board decided to set up the Dr. Maguire Cup, which from 1927 was
presented to the County Champions. The Donegal Democrat also presented a league
championship cup to the County Board in 1926. In 1931 the minor championship
began. The Dr. McKenna Cup (Corn Dr. Mhic Cionnaith) began in 1927. This football
23
Archives of the Donegal Gaelic Athletic Association County Board
competition was played between Ulster
Counties (and later also by the Universities
in the Province). The cup had been donated
to the Ulster Council in 1924 by the Rev. Dr.
McKenna. Donegal had to wait until 1963 to
bring the cup home, but has since won the
competition numerous times. The Dr. Lagan
Cup (Corn Dochtúir Uí Lagáin) was another
inter-county football competition in Ulster,
limited to five Ulster Counties. Donegal won the
cup four times, in 1952, 1965, 1966 and 1967,
after which the competition was discontinued.
In club football, over three decades the game
went from strength to strength. Successful
teams included Ardara in the 1920s with
Ballyshannon and Dungloe dominating in the
1930s. Gweedore won the championship four

years in a row from 1944-1947. Dungloe and St.
Eunans, Letterkenny dominated in the following decade before MacCumhaill’s came
to the fore in 1959.
In 1969 a new competition got off the ground, spearheaded by Anthony O’Carroll
from Gweedore and his friend from Kerry, Anthony de Bairéad. The two college friends,
in a desire to bring football teams from Gaeltacht areas together, arranged a match
between Gweedore and Ballyferriter, County Kerry, to be played in Gweedore in
January 1969. The meeting was such a success that it was decided there and then to
set up a competition for Gaeltacht teams, and Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta began,
with Gweedore man Seán Delap elected president. To date Gweedore has won the
competition a total of seven times.

Anthony Molloy, beat Dublin, 18 points to 14 in the All-Ireland final. The momentous
reception that the Sam Maguire Cup and the victorious team received upon their
arrival in Donegal is an indication of what the win meant to GAA supporters in Donegal
and how much the Association has become part of the fabric of the community. More
recently the county team won the National Football League Division 1 title, the first
senior Donegal team to win the title, beating Mayo at Croke Park on the 22nd of April
2007. In 2011 Donegal also won its first Ulster Senior Football Championship in nearly
two decades. The county team broke a nineteen year drought in the championship by
beating Derry with a final score of Donegal 1-11 Derry 0-8.
Role of the GAA
It is impossible to sum up in a few short lines what the GAA means to people across
the county. It is an intrinsic part of Irish society, in existence for a relatively short 127
years but so embedded is it in local communities it gives the impression of always
having been there. It is perhaps better to rely on the words of a Donegal man who
clearly held Gaelic games close to his heart.
‘They are more than mere games played for relaxation or amusement, although they
adequately fulfil both these desirable purposes. They are an expression of the characteristics
of our race, the motivating spirit of our being, and it is in that spirit they should be played
– that spirit of rivalry, combined with the sense of comradeship of the Gael. We are the
Guardians of great treasures – treasures that are of the spirit rather than of material things.
Let us do all we can to promote the games, the language, the music, the traditions – the
culture of the Gael. By doing so we can live up to the high ideals set up by the illustrious
founders of the G.A.A.’
Sean MacCumhaill (1901 –1949)
The county team has had numerous successes over the years, including winning
the Ulster Senior Football Championship in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s as well as a
number of victories in the Dr. McKenna Cup and titles in the Minor league, Under
21 and school competition level. All-Ireland titles were won in the Vocational Schools
Football Championship in 1984, 1985, 1995, 1996 and in 2002 as well as Under 21
football championships in 1982 and 1987. The GAA in Donegal however, had to wait
until 1992 for an All-Ireland Senior Football title. Donegal, captained by Ardara player

The Archives of the Donegal GAA County Board : An Introduction
The Archives of the Donegal GAA County Board were deposited with the Archives
Service of Donegal County Council in July 2006. This significant collection dating from
1927 was in the care of the then County Secretary, Charlie O’Donnell, who, recognising
the value of the collection sought a permanent home for the archives.
With funding from the Heritage Council, the collection has now been catalogued and
is available for research at the Archives Service in Lifford.
The Collection:
This collection, dating from 1927 to 2009, contains a wide variety of material, reflecting
the range of activities of the GAA in the county. The records of administration include
minute books, correspondence, financial records and numerous reports, which reflect
the inner working of the board. A large number of records also exist from the various
committees of the County Board, including the regional boards, minor and hurling
boards and also the Parks Committee and Oifigeach na Gaeilge.
The earliest document in the collection is a correspondence book with copies of
outgoing correspondence written by Secretary Seán Ó Caiside, covering the period
1927-1937 (GAA/1/6/2). Letters include references to fixtures, teams, players and
grievances.
The GAA in Donegal really took root in the 1920s and the bulk of administrative
material in the collection dates from the 1930s onwards. It is unfortunate that no
material from the early years of the Association in the county has survived as part of
the official collection, especially from the years 1905-1907 when the first County Board
was established. It is possible that this material was lost when the Association went into
decline in Donegal. Archives from the turbulent years of 1919-27 are also missing. It is
possible that material from this period survives in private hands and will come to light
at a later date. A large amount of material has survived from the 1930s, particularly
from 1933. This material relates primarily to Seán Conaghan, treasurer of the County
Board from 1925-1933, and includes invoices and correspondence. A large amount of
financial material from the later 1930s and 1940s, relating to Seán Ó Caiside’s term as
treasurer, has also survived.
As well as administrative material at a county level the collection also contains a
small amount of material from eight clubs in Donegal. Material includes programmes,
26
Archives of the Donegal Gaelic Athletic Association County Board
correspondence and yearbooks from Ardara, St. Michaels (Dunfanaghy) Kilcar, Red
Hughs (Ballyshannon), Saint Nauls (Inver) and Four Masters (Donegal Town).
Material produced by the GAA at national level also forms part of the collection. This
includes circulars, rule books, fixtures booklets, programmes and reports. Most notable
is the report of the GAA commission set up under the 1969 convention motion, to
investigate all aspects of the affairs of the Association with special reference to: the
structure of the Association at all levels, financial management, youth, grounds,
communications, hurling, discipline and sponsorship (GAA/10/6).
Programmes for matches are the most numerous of documents in the collection,
amounting to over 300 items. These programmes cover club matches, for leagues and
championships as well as programmes for Ulster and All-Ireland matches and from the
National football league. A small number of programmes covering hurling matches
are also preserved in the collection. As well as providing details of individual matches
these programmes also tend to publish additional information, for example histories of
clubs or the games in a given area or time period as well as biographical details about
players and officials. Early programmes generally consist of one printed page but the
programmes become more detailed over the years. Other ephemera includes tickets
for matches and officials’ passes, invites, posters and souvenirs of dinner dances and
fundraising events. Other publications include yearbooks and annuals, newsletters and
magazines, histories and books of GAA facts as well as commemorative publications
produced to mark anniversaries, openings of club grounds, winning teams and of
course the centenary of the GAA in 1984.
The collection also contains
material relating to Comórtas
Peile na Gaeltachta, the Marion
Camogie
Club,
(Ballybun,
Castlefin) Handball, Scór na
nÓg as well as a large selection
of newspapers, including
special supplements produced
to mark the All-Ireland Senior
Football title win in 1992.

Also of interest is the substantial amount of financial material from the 1930s. Invoices
from this period show the day to day workings of the organisation. The sheer number
of invoices for transport demonstrates how difficult it was to transport players and
officials to matches. The majority of these invoices are from local businesses providing
a picture of services available in the towns at this time. One document of particular
interest is a letter from the Garda Síochána in Letterkenny from the 16th of November
1933 stating that the GAA owes money to a number of businesses in the town and the
merchants are looking to be paid. This letter also includes a full list of businesses and
the money owed to them (GAA/1/5/3/2/2(20)).
Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta Programme / Ardara Yearbook / Centenary Programme
Unfortunately less than a dozen photographs are preserved in the collection. The
Archives Service is hopeful of acquiring donations of photos from GAA enthusiasts in
the future.
Archives of note include the County Board minute books dating from 1933-1996. These
minute books are of key importance to the history of the County Boards. Information
recorded includes reports of the divisional secretaries, finances, fixture lists, election
of officers to the board, training and referees’ reports. Also of interest are the Annual
Convention reports, detailing the annual progress of each committee and plans for
the continued development of the Association. These reports were an opportunity for
committee members to highlight their successes and also to voice their frustrations
over things that needed improving.
Other items of importance include printed bye-laws of the Donegal GAA dated 19281932, published by the Donegal County Board. This document includes an article
entitled ‘Our Gaelic Games’ from the Derry People, a list of officials of the County Board
as well as a list of affiliated clubs and their kit colours. It also contains a detailed list of
rules and bye-laws and also a list of inter-county matches participated in since the reorganisation of the Association in 1919 (GAA/4/1).

Arrangement
This collection has been arranged with the original order and structure in mind.
Where possible the collection has been left as officials of the board created them, for
example correspondence for the treasurer of the board is separate from the general
correspondence, which would have been received by the county secretary. This is how
the collection came to the Archives and when possible little or no changes have been
made. In the same vein, material has been arranged by its creating committee or board
or by function. Within these groups documents are arranged by document type and
then placed in chronological order.
The majority of the documents relate to football. A small number of items relating
to other games have been separated out and listed under hurling, camogie, ladies
football and handball.
As Irish is the official language
of the organisation, a significant
amount of the collection is
in Irish. Published material is
generally in both English and
Irish although some material is
in Irish only. There is a variation
in the spelling of certain
placenames or clubs in the Irish
language material. Where this is
the case the material has been
listed with the name as it appears
on the document. Material has
Young Camogie Players

also been listed with the Irish title if the document is titled in Irish.
The research potential of this collection is inherent. The documents contained in the
archives give a unique insight into the working of the organisation at county level
and show its development over time. They are also a valuable piece of local history,
recording the activities of local members, teams, clubs, volunteers and businesses
which provided services or sponsorship to the Association.
