AUGUST 2015 DESERT DUST
N
obles and Ladies: What a
great start to a fun filled
Summer we are having in
Oasis territory. We kicked off our
Summer season with the highly
successful Ceremonial in Maggie Valley, moved right in to the
Oasis Celebrity Classic Golf Tournament. What a great way to start
our season.
Oasis enjoyed a near record number of Nobles, Ladies and friends
at the Oasis Family Fun Day at
beautiful Red Fez Shrine Club.
It was exciting to see 30 kids
participate in the fishing tournament, and a special thanks goes
to Clay McClean and Clint Myers,
Potentate Aides, for coordinating the fishing event, and to the
other volunteers who helped with
baiting hooks, retrieving fish, and
cheering the contestants. Those
30 young fishermen caught 72
fish in two hours. What a wonderful tribute it was to get the kids so
involved in this family tradition.
The Oasis Divan stepped up to
the plate in the dunking booth to
raise $1,000.00 for our Shrine
Hospitals for Children. The more
amazing thing is, Red Fez Shrine
Club matched the funds raised by
the Divan, bringing the total being donated to SHC to $2,000.00.
Thanks to the members of Red
Fez for this contribution, and to
the members of the Divan for
spirited participation.
Oasis Shrine was the highlighted
Temple at the 141st Session of Imperial Shrine in Houston, Texas.
Oasis contributed $125,000.00
to Lady Lisa Gantt’s special brittle
bone project for Shrine Hospitals
for Children. These funds go a
long way to help in the treatment
of this tragic disease.
One of the highlights of the Session was Oasis’s presentation
of a check in the amount of
$1,349,627.00 to Shrine Hospitals for Children, by far the
largest check presented out of
the 195 Shrine Centers worldwide. You, as members of Oasis
Shrine, have reason to be proud
and brag about this accomplishment. Oasis Shrine has, for many
years, set the bar for all Shrine
Centers throughout the world.
The hard work and dedication of
Oasis members is recognized by
not only the other Centers, but by
Shrine International. It makes
everybody proud to be seen at the
Imperial Session with the Oasis
Fez proudly displayed.
Oasis Shrine, along with our
other North Carolina counterparts, Amran and Sudan Shrine
Centers, were pleased to honor
the Most Worshipful Grand Master of Masons in North Carolina at
the Grand Masters Dinner. Most
Worshipful Douglas and Lady Angela were honored at the Grand
Masters Dinner in Houston,
which was well attended by Divan
members from all three Shrine
Centers, as well as many members of the centers. It was a fitting tribute to honor our Masonic
tween Shriners International and
Shriners Hospitals For Children.
H
ello Nobles, Ladies, and
Friends of the Shrine. I
hope everyone had a good
(hot) July and is surviving the
heated summer. Some of those
super-hot, humid days have made
it a challenge!!
I am glad you chose to tune into
the article this month since it
contains information that will affect each and every Shriner and
their Lady. Your Oasis Imperial
Representatives are freshly back
from Houston (super hot there
also), and I would like to give a
rundown of the legislation. The
legislation list this year (entitled
“The Call”) consisted mostly of
what I would term lower priority items. Items such as temples
changing their locations/addresses, voting preferences within the
temple on new members, bylaws
impacting new international tem-
ples (examples being the Philippines and Germany), etc.
But wait, we did approve our
newest international temple in
Brazil with quite a bit of fanfare.
Numbers being thrown around is
that the country of Brazil has over
1,000,000 Masons available to
become Shriners. Kinda boggles
the mind doesn’t it since at the
end of 2014, we only had 269,555
Shriners on Planet Earth.
O.K., let’s get to the important
piece of legislation, the per capita
increase since that one will hit us
in the pocketbook.
Simply stated, the per capita fees
are the dues which each temple
pays to Shriners International for
the products/services and oversight which they provide. Oops,
let me explain the difference be-
Our organization is a bit different from others (i.e. Moose International, Lions International,
etc) in that we have a fraternal
part (known as Shriners International) and a philanthropic part
(known as Shriners Hospitals
For Children). They are further
differentiated as two unique corporations-Shriners International
is known as “The Iowa Corporation”, and the Shriners Hospitals
For Children is known as the
Colorado Corporation.
Whew, now that we have that
straighten out, in a nutshell,
over the last several years, the
Iowa Corporation has been losing large sums of money each
year due to the fact that the only
two sources of income are the
per capita fees and return on
investments. Well, given the fact
that most investments have been
earning in the 2-4% range, and
the membership numbers have
been dropping around 5% per
leader in this fashion.
In a vote of the electorate, Imperial Shrine voted for a per capita
charge of $15.00 per member,
which will require an increase in
membership dues. Despite this
increase, Oasis Shrine remains in
the top 5 lowest in membership
dues of the 195 Centers of Shrine
International. We will continue
to work to keep dues as low as
possible.
On August 15th, Oasis Shrine
will partner with Carolinas First
Defense to conduct a Concealed
Carry Class at 1334 Phifer Road,
Kings Mountain, NC. They cost
has been greatly discounted for
Oasis members and their family members. You can sign up
by going to the Carolinas First
Defense website, www.carolinasfirstdefense.com. If you have
been considering a Concealed
Carry Permit, you will not want
to miss this function. Please see
the ad in this edition of the Desert Dust for full details. This is a
great opportunity for our members and families.
For those of you who have been
year, the Iowa Corporation would
have been bankrupt right around
the middle of 2016. You can easily see the reason for the request.
This piece was brought before
the Representatives last year and
failed due to the Imperial Officers being unable to convince
the delegates that the cost side of
the equation was being properly
addressed. I don’t want to go on
forever on this topic but will give
one example. One of the highest
expenses each year for the Iowa
Corporation is the annual Imperial Session which costs, give or
take, approximately $1.5 million.
Over half these costs are due to
the temples’ elected Representatives (and their spouses) getting
their travel expenses reimbursed,
which includes airfare and hotel
costs. They also get a small daily
meal stipend but that is so small it
doesn’t deserve a mention. Well,
like most other examples, it is
difficult to cut your way to success, and the only way to balance
this budget is to increase the per
capita revenues over the large
number of Nobles.
wondering about your heritage,
ancestry and genealogy, you will
want to attend the Genealogy
Class on Sunday, August 16th
at Oasis Shrine Headquarters.
Representatives from ancestory.com will be there to help,
and the class will be given at no
charge to the participants. This
is a great way to find out about
your ancestry. Bring your laptop. Wifi will be provided at no
charge.
sis Shrine Center in Charlotte. A
schedule of events, along with
Hotel information, will be published in the Desert Dust. Get
those petitions in early. We had
the largest class of candidates in
recent history at Maggie Valley,
and we hope to have an even larger class in Charlotte. Keep those
incentives in mind. It is an easy
way to get your Oasis dues paid,
and help to increase membership
at the same time.
We look forward to our South Atlantic Shrine Association (SASA)
meeting at Myrtle Beach in midSeptember. A lot of excitement
is expected from the Association
and from planned functions by
Oasis Shrine. You will find a full
schedule of the events in this issue of the Desert Dust, including
information needed to reserve
your room at the beautiful Spring
Maid Resort. If you have not gotten your reservation yet for Spring
Maid, don’t delay. The rooms are
going fast, and a lot of fun events
are planned at the Resort for Oasis members.
Lady Mary and I could not be any
prouder of the Nobles and Ladies who work so hard every day
to make Oasis Shrine the best
Shrine Center in the world. It is
such an honor to serve as your
Potentate and First Lady. I will
always be grateful to each of you
for allowing me to sit at the helm
this year, and pledge to you that
we will continue to support and
love each of you. Membership in
the Shrine, along with your dedication to the kids, is what makes
and keeps us strong. We are indeed fortunate to be a part of it.
Moving into October, we will
have our Fall Ceremonial at Oa-
Bottom line on the impact to you,
Oasis dues will increase from the
current $67 (comprised of the
Oasis dues of $47, a $5 hospital
assessment, plus the current $15
per capita dues) to $82 (comprised of the $47 Oasis dues, plus
the $5 hospital assessment, plus
the $30 per capital dues).
Might we lose some members due
to the increase, of course!!! Some
are just looking for an excuse to
leave, but overall, the increase
brings an additional $4,043,325
into the fraternal side of our business, and makes us fiscally stronger (at least in the short-term).
Should we be able to turn a significant number of the 1,000,000
Brazilian Masons into Brazilian
Shriners, life would be good!!
I will close with how Oasis’ dues
will rank out overall compared to
other Shrine temples. The lowest
dues will be $64, and the highest
dues will be $184. $82 still looks
pretty good to me compared with
our peers. The primary contributors to keeping the Oasis dues
Yours in the Faith;
Todd
low is our circus telemarketing
revenues, and our building rental
revenues, both of which are not
easy to achieve. I would like to
take this opportunity to thank Noble Rodney Morgan for the excellent work he does managing our
circus efforts. I would also like
to thank Claudie Strickland and
Noble Chris Reitzel for the excellent work they do managing our
building rentals.
O.K., once again you’re let me
take up way too much of your
time, but the items above affect
each and every Noble and their
Ladies.
Things continue to go well here at
Oasis, and we would love to have
you stop by and visit your temple.
Take care until next month, and
remember, the work you do for
our fraternity and philanthropy
is sincerely appreciated and essential to our hospitals and the
children they serve.

Chocolate is a pretty good friend of mine, but a super close friend of my

I called Chuck. He called Chocolate. A date was set, and viola, the entire
Whipple clan...Dad Jason, Mom Jacki, 7 year old Brady, 6 year old Ava, 2 1/2

Recognizes Shriners
Hospitals for Children
Greensboro, NC
Shriners Hospitals for Children’s national reputation for expertise in pediatric health care continues to grow, as shown
by its presence in U.S. News & World Report’s 2015-2016
rankings of the best children’s hospitals in the United States:
•
•
•
Shriners Hospitals for Children — Salt Lake City
(together with Primary Children’s Hospital) was ranked
10th best in pediatric orthopaedics.
Shriners Hospitals for Children — St. Louis (together
with St. Louis Children’s Hospital-Washington
University), was ranked 11th in pediatric orthopaedics.
Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California
(together with UC Davis Children’s Hospital) was
ranked 29th in pediatric orthopaedics, and 20th in
pediatric urology.
The rankings are listed online and will be published in the
U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals 2016 guidebook,
which will be available September 1.
October 3, 2015
Hospitals’ scores relied on patient outcomes and care-related
resources each hospital makes available. To gather data, U.S.
News and World Report sent a clinical questionnaire to 184
pediatric hospitals. A sixth of the score came from annual surveys of pediatric specialists and sub-specialists in 2013, 2014
and 2015. They were asked where they would send the sickest
children in their specialty, setting aside location and expense.

WORRY!
And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? “So do not worry about
tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today’s trouble is enough for today.
Matthew 6
While surfing about the other day, I read the following
about worry on the web page:
www.webmd.com: “worrying affects your daily life so
much that it interferes with
your appetite, lifestyle habits,
relationships, sleep, and job
performance. Many people
who worry excessively are
so anxiety-ridden that they
seek relief in harmful lifestyle
habits such as overeating, or
using alcohol and drugs.”
The Bible is very clear when
Christ asked the Disciples:
Can any of you by worrying
add a single hour to your
span of life?” (Matthew 6)
Christine Purdon, Ph.D., a licensed psychologist, professor and executive director of
the Centre for Mental Health
Research at the University
of Waterloo told Amanda
L. Chan, a reporter for Huffington Post: “Perhaps one
of the biggest differences
between worriers and nonworriers is the ability to stay
in the present, and not get
bogged down by things that
have yet to happen.”
Dr. Purdon calls it a “worry
chain” -- the idea that one
worry will spur a “what if,”
which spurs another worry
and another “what if,” and
so on. Whereas the nonworriers among us are able
to look at a problem, and
decide IF something can be
done about it, and be about
doing the thing to solve the
problem. Or, as my grandmother would say, “If you
can’t do anything about it, go
on about your business”!
Tim Conner of the Connor Resource Group, Davidson, NC
reminds us that some 80-90
percent of the things people
worry about never actually
happen. Recently, Tim said,
“In ancient times worry was
shown in drawings as a wolf
sinking its teeth into the neck
of a man. How right they
were”!
So, how do we make sure the
“wolf of worry” is not sinking
John H. Stanley,
P.P., Chaplain
its teeth into our necks?
We are to live in the present, as
we remember the verse from
the Psalms: “This is THE DAY
that the Lord has made. Let us
rejoice and be glad in it!”
This day, living in the present
means that we do not regret
past mistakes, and we do
not borrow trouble from the
future.
This is the day….not yesterday and not tomorrow.
This day!

t’s Hot, Hot, Hot! and we’re still standing
tall as the Award Winning, Internationally
Acclaimed, Oasis Shriners Patrol Unit and
Color Guard.
We have let our camels rest over the past several
weeks after much Shrine activity and as a prelude
or calm before the storm of Shrining yet to come.
Since the beginning of June we have participated
in a couple of Oasis events; Spring Ceremonial in
Maggie Valley and Family Fun Day at the Red Fez
Shrine Club on the Catawba River just above Lake
Wylie. Much fun and fellowship was had by all in
attendance.
We will begin our late summer processes of
readying our Unit for the upcoming SASA and
related SASPA festivities in Myrtle Beach the third
weekend of September. We shall
participate in the SASPA Inspection and Drill Competitions with
other Shrine Patrols from the other 18 SASA Shrine Centers within
the SASA Catch-man area. We’ll
step up and off as “North Carolina
Strong” as our primary competition is ACCA Marching Patrol out
of Virginia. As for our SASA duties
we will step off to lead the Friday
evening Parade with our Oasis
Patrol Color Guard. We almost
cannot wait to march down Ocean
Blvd. as evening occurs with the
heavy beat and smooth horns of
the Oasis Drum and Bugle Corps.
It is an awesome feeling to swell
with our pride carrying our flags
and saber swords to packed sidewalks of spectators. We’ll also be
pulling our obligatory Door Duty
at the Oasis Hospitality Dance(s)
so everybody have their dues
cards ready to show.
Please keep all of the special thoughts and prayers
going for our Unit’s un-well and care givers. Send
a card, make a phone call and/or pay a visit to
cheer them up. They will be glad you did and you
will be glad as well – no doubt.
People asking questions lost in confusion, well I tell them there’s no problem,
only solutions. Well they shake their
heads and they look at me as if I’ve lost
my mind, I tell them there’s no hurry...
I’m just sitting here doing time.

A Message from the
Imperial Potentate
ear Fellow Nobles, Cheryl and I want to thank you for the
honor and privilege of serving as your Imperial Potentate
and First Lady. It honestly is the most humbling experience
we have ever had. Throughout the year, Cheryl and I approached
our responsibilities as Imperial Potentate and First Lady very aware
of the honor, trust and respect that come with these positions. We
hope that our efforts came close to your expectations, and that we
leave the office more respected and revered then when entrusted
to us. We cannot thank you, your ladies and your families enough
for the endless kindness and consideration shared with us. “Thank
you” is a small phrase – just two words – but when said with true
gratitude, it can be one of the most powerful phrases in our language. Know that we are truly grateful for each one of you, and all
that you did for us this past year.
and generating interest in our organizations can help increase both
membership and patient numbers. Consequently, a large part of our
effort this year involved developing and strengthening both internal and
external communications.
We also thank you for your generous support of Cheryl’s program,
The Journey of Hope. Our 22 hospitals serve children from all
across the U.S., and much of the world. Families will travel as far
as necessary to obtain
the best possible medical
care for their children,
and your donations to
Cheryl’s program will
help them make those
journeys more easily.
We have increased communication and outreach efforts in
multiple venues, including continuing to refine our fraternal
magazine, Shriner Magazine:
Pride and Tradition. We also
send out an electronic newsletter monthly, a bimonthly message from myself, and other
communications sharing information on events and programs
on an ongoing basis. We want an
informed, active, invested nobility, and we encourage open,
honest, respectful communication throughout Shriners International and Shriners Hospitals for Children. We will continue to do all
we can to encourage and inspire every member to be active and to stay
active. Each one of us can make a difference – it just takes commitment, dedication and resolve.
Our efforts this year focused on increasing membership and patient
numbers, and on building and sharing pride in our fraternity and
our philanthropy. We want each noble, and staff member, to really know how much our fraternity has accomplished, be proud
of our history and confident in our future, and share that pride
and knowledge at every opportunity. We are extremely proud of
Shriners International and Shriners Hospitals for Children – it
is our priority every day. The more we share our story, the more
opportunities there will be to raise awareness. Raising awareness
We have worked very hard to develop a successful approach to using
television to raise awareness of both our fraternity and our philanthropy. We have an ongoing DRTV (direct response television) ad campaign
that includes a fraternal presence. The spots have generated donations,
and, equally important, interest in the fraternity – they have been noticed. In 2014, our various DRTV ad campaigns reached 700 million
households and raised millions of dollars for the health care system.
In addition 8,600 viewers pledged to donate monthly and more than
700 callers requested information on Shriners Hospitals for Children.
This year we received opportunities for appearances on wellknown network television programs. Shriners Hospitals for Children was featured on the iconic television show General Hospital.
And our Honolulu Shriners Hospital was showcased in a scene
of the season finale of the popular television show Hawaii Five-0.
Football star Justin Pugh, one of our Love to the rescue® ambassadors, and his guest, National Patient Ambassador Joe Dertinger,
were participants on the game show, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, which received significant media coverage.
Strengthening our fraternity was a top priority this past year, as
well. We emphasized the importance of maintaining close ties between our headquarters office and the local temples, as well as between nobles and families. We hope these efforts will help increase
the sense of brotherhood and unity. Temples that are growing are
those that are honestly trying to meet the needs of today’s young
men and families, and to welcome and encourage them.
The fraternity and the philanthropy belong to us; they will be what
we make them. We hope to make them stronger, and better –
something you and future generations will remember with pride.
Yours in the faith,
Dale Stauss
