MONTY BROWN’S FIRST ART EXHIBIT WITH BSP
We are so happy to display new resident Monty
Brown’s artwork. Monty is finding new and different
inspiration painting from his new home here since
relocating from vast night skies and vistas of Arizona.
These beautiful, vibrant acrylics on canvas evolved into
this exhibit entitled “Energy Art.”
Monty has had an interesting background: He was
reared in South Carolina, sold papers and kindling, drove
a delivery truck, joined the Air Force at 19, attended the
University of Chicago while working and eventually
earned his MBA and Ph.D. He later was a hospital
association research director, and received his doctorate
in public health, as well as a law degree. Monte taught at
Northwestern and Duke universities, edited a journal and had a consulting practice for 15 years. Now
he’s “retired!”
Please come visit with Monty, learn about his paintings and enjoy refreshments at 3:00 on
Tuesday, August 4, in the Art Gallery.
KANSAS CITY CULTURAL DISTRICT DEVELOPMENTS
Mark Zimmerman, Director of Administration at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of
Art, will engage us in a presentation regarding the developments of the proposed KC
cultural district. A study the museum commissioned from the New York urban design
firm Weiss/Manfredi envisions a unified district stretching from Broadway to the Paseo
and 44th to 55th streets. The district would encompass roughly four square miles in a
one-mile radius near the intersection of Oak Street and Emanuel Cleaver II Boulevard.
Though no one has yet put a price tag on this big idea, maps and renderings show the area
linked by bike paths and walking trails; sleek pedestrian bridges over Main Street, Cleaver Boulevard
and Brush Creek; and enhanced lighting and security. Outdoor art plays a prominent role along with
improved spaces designed for gatherings and performances.
Mr. Zimmerman will come to BSP at 3:00
on Friday, August 7, in the Westport
Room. Come learn about this exciting
nearby project!
BOW WIND TRIO IN THE CHAPEL
The BowWind Trio is back presenting a chamber music recital to take full
advantage of the exceptional acoustics in the Chapel!
The ensemble is led by arranger/composer/woodwind performer Greg Briggs
and presents an eclectic blend of light classical works. Join us for this beautiful
performance at 3:00 on Friday, August 21, in The Chapel of the Epiphany.

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER
A presidential election is coming up! Presidential hopefuls already abound, and new contenders
are likely to throw their hats in the ring before all the dust settles. The rhetoric is ramping up from the
hopefuls themselves, and information about their credentials and track records is readily available to help
us make an informed choice in 2016.
A recent meditation in Forward Day by Day urges us to pray for all our leaders, inside and outside
of the political arena. The author goes on to describe the ideal leader as outlined in scripture: S/he seeks
to be a channel of the righteousness, justice and compassion of God, with special concern for the poor
and needy. This is a timely reminder for all people of faith: That in voting, as in all things, informationgathering is good — but a truly informed choice also requires our prayerful consideration.
Give the King your justice, O God, and your righteousness;
that the King may deliver the poor and preserve the lives of the needy (Ps. 72)
— Chaplain Kathy Hall
CHAPLAIN ANNOUNCEMENTS
Roman Catholic Mass: Father Bob will be out of town the first couple of weeks in August, but he will be
back to say Mass on Wednesday, August 19, at 9:30 a.m. in The Chapel of The Epiphany. The Rosary
will follow.
Good Books: We will meet on the 4th Monday of the month, August 24, at 3:00 p.m. in The Chapel of
the Epiphany to continue our discussion of The Faith Club. Happy reading!
BSP BRIDGE MIXER
On the first Monday of each month, we are continuing our bridge mixer
with prix fixe lunch (to be charged to each resident’s account). The game is open to all
residents, and foursomes are drawn. Sign up with the concierge at the Madison or
Jefferson lobby so we’ll have an accurate head count for lunch. See you at 12:00 on
Monday, August 3, in the Canterbury Dining Room.
OUR BSP BUS TOURS HISTORIC NORTHEAST KANSAS CITY
Long-time Northeast Kansas City resident David Remley will accompany us on a bus tour of the
historical areas of the Scarritt Renaissance neighborhood, Pendleton Heights (named Kansas City’s first
developed suburb), Indian Mound neighborhood and the Independence Plaza neighborhood.
This should prove to be a very engaging cultural visit of this important
part of our city through the interpretation of Mr. Remley. We might ask him to
drive us by Scuola Vita Nuova Charter School — our own Judge Charles
Shangler revived that campus and provided many cultural opportunities for
this changing multicultural neighborhood!
Please sign up with the concierge in the Madison or Jefferson lobby and the
BSP bus will depart at 2:00 on Monday, August 10, for this enjoyable junket.

JOHN ROBERT GREENE PRESENTS: “LIKING IKE & ADLAI” AT KC LIBRARY
Presidential races are the stuff of myth, sometimes
literally. Like the 1952 contest between Dwight Eisenhower and
Adlai Stevenson, both purportedly reluctant candidates who
were somewhat out of touch with their campaigns.
Cazenovia College history professor and presidential
scholar John Robert Greene, author of The Crusade: The
Presidential Election of 1952, sets the record straight in a
discussion of the race ultimately won decisively by Eisenhower.
The mythmakers, he maintains, underrated the political
shrewdness of the two men, each of whom wanted to win and
recognized that voters were more receptive to a candidate who was “above politics.”
This special presentation is part of the Eisenhower 125 series co-presented by the Dwight D.
Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum and Boyhood Home with support from the W.T. Kemper
Foundation. Don’t forget to sign up with the concierge in the Madison or Jefferson lobby — the BSP
bus leaves at 6:00 on Tuesday, August 4.
THE LYRIC ARTS TRIO TO PERFORM AT BSP
Veterans of the classical scene, the Lyric Arts Trio is a fresh,
innovative chamber ensemble that turns a unique blend of clarinet,
piano and soprano voice into a delight. Their creative approach to
classical music results in concerts crafted around a central theme,
and concerts are enlivened by informative (and even amusing)
commentary from the musicians.
Elena Lence Talley, Sarah Tannehill Anderson and Daniel
Velicer will play for BSP, and you won’t want to miss this! Join us at
3:00 on Thursday, August 27, in the Madison Living Room.
“SHOOTING BACK IN TIME” WITH TERENCE O’MALLEY
Terence O’Malley was commissioned by
Union Station to direct this documentary film
commemorating the 75th anniversary of the tragic
event: The Union Station Massacre.
Interspersing clips from his film, Mr. O’Malley
provides the backdrop preceding the firestorm,
explains the role Kansas City’s mob played in
facilitating the action and gives a full accounting of the players
involved in the Massacre. If you’ve ever wondered about the true
story behind those bullet holes at Union Station, this presentation
provides the answers.
We are pleased to welcome Mr. O’Malley here at 3:00 on Wednesday, August 12, in the
Westport Room. Come enjoy this fascinating time in our history as Mr. O’Malley teaches us
more about this fateful day in 1933 Kansas City.

BSP TOUR OF THE EXQUISITE KAUFFMAN MEMORIAL GARDEN
This trip is essential! Lush plant beds feature local and exotic botanicals at the lovely Kauffman
Garden, including some plant varieties not found elsewhere in the Midwest. Pruned foliage and flower
plantings are framed by stone walls and artfully shaped around playful fountains and elegant pieces
by bronze sculptor Tom Corbin. Also, the Orangery is the major architectural feature on the garden
lawn, offering a sheltered gathering place for visitors and a site for fragrant and seasonal plants.
The Ewing and Muriel Kauffman Memorial Garden, an enduring gift for Kansas City, extends the
legacy of a gracious couple. We’re hoping many of you
will sign up for this guided tour, so please remember
to sign up with the Madison or Jefferson concierge.
The BSP bus leaves promptly at 9:00 on Thursday,
August 20. All aboard!
RUBÉN PASCOTTINI IS BACK IN TOWN
A native of Asunción, Paraguay, Rubén Pascottini grew up surrounded
by the music his father would play on the radio or record player. Introduced
to the piano when he was four years old, he became fascinated, spending
much of his time trying to replicate the songs his dad played. His mother
enrolled him in piano lessons, resulting in his first piano recital at age six.
In 1989 he came to the United States to study English and was
awarded a scholarship in piano performance from the University of Kansas. He’s been performing at
a wide variety of venues ever since, and now has his music available on CDs to purchase! Join us to
welcome Rubén at 3:00 on Friday, August 14, in the Madison Living Room.
EXPLORE OUR KANSAS CITY FOUNTAINS WITH JOANIE SHIELDS
Board member of Friends of Sacred Structures (FOSS), coordinator of Adopt-A-Monument
program and board member of the City of Fountains Foundation, Joanie Shields will give us a
delightful presentation about our Kansas City fountains. The City of Fountains Foundation was
established in 1973 by Hallmark executive Harold Rice and his wife, Peggy. The foundation was
organized as a not-for-profit corporation with the goal of raising funds to construct new fountains,
manage trust funds to cover maintenance costs and increase awareness of the importance of
Kansas City’s fountains. It is committed to the restoration and preservation of the historic fountains
and sculptures in the Kansas City area.
Pictured here is our beloved J.C. Nichols
Fountain, the best-known and most-photographed of
all of the city's fountains. The Nichols family initiated
the purchase and installation in 1958 which was
generously funded by the family, the city and private
contributions. See many more of our city’s fountains
at: www.KCFountains.com/Fountains.
Join us to hear Ms. Shields at 3:00 on Tuesday,
August 18, in the Westport Room.

GARDEN TIME
Mints are attractive to animals from bees and butterflies to cats
to horses to humans, and our gardens reflect some of that (I haven’t
seen any horses around!). Our chefs use sprigs of mint to embellish
various dishes and Bill Buckner grows a special mint to make his mint
juleps for the Kentucky Derby. The gardens have always been
intended to attract and feed bees and butterflies (pollinators). This
year, bergamot (bee balm) was added to the Memorial Garden for the
butterflies; it has catered to cats with catmint, which left my cat cold,
but neighborhood cats recently rolled in it.

ABBEY RIMEL PRESENTS WOLFNER LIBRARY SERVICES
Abbey Rimel, Deputy Director for Public Services at Wolfner Library, is coming to
BSP to reveal to us all that Wolfner Library has to offer. It provides an invaluable free
