Bass As a member of the Montello Historic Preservation Society, you are invited to…... An opening reception of the Looking Back exhibit on Friday, August 8th, from 7 to 9 PM at J. P. Vaughn Hall. Dr. Jim Slattery who developed and spearheaded this exhibit will make some remarks and you will be able to be the first to see this beautiful display of photographs and objects from the time.. Exhibit opens to the public on Saturday, August 9. A series of presentations will accompany this exhibit. The talks will all be at the Montello Municipal Building on Saturdays and will start at 1 PM. August 16 Eye Appeal: Learning about Architecture from the Photos of E. A. Bass Architectural historian Jim Draeger from the Wisconsin Historical Society will discuss the historical roots of Montello architecture captured in the photographs of E. A. Bass August 23 A Closer Look: History in the Photographs. Jack Holzhueter, historian and longtime editor of the Wisconsin Magazine of History will discuss state and national historic trends reflected in the photography of E. A. Bass September 13 Preserving Photographic Collections David Benjamin, Visual Materials Archivist at the Wisconsin Historical Society, will discuss the care and preservation of personal photographs. October 18 Philip Hasheider will talk on genealogy on October 18th and his talk is titled "How to get started” October 11 State of the Art: The Medical Education and Practice of Dr. Bass Dr. Jim Slattery, retired orthopedic surgeon and project director of the exhibit, will discuss late nineteenth century medical care and training. At its recent June meeting, the Wisconsin Historical Society's Board of Curators voted to award your organizations the Society's 2008 exhibit awards. Montello Historic Preservation Society receives the award for an exhibit with a budget less than $50,000. The exhibit is: Unearthed: Evidence of the First People of Marquette County. Vaughn Hall during the opening reception or during exhibit hours Montello Historic Preservation Society….Holding dear our sense of place Box 473 Montello, WI 53949 Dr. Bass photo essay featured in the Wisconsin Magazine of History The Summer, 2008 issue of the Wisconsin Magazine of History includes a photo essay, The Photography of Dr. Edward A. Bass, submitted by MHPS volunteer Jim Slattery, who is also the project director for the upcoming exhibit of Dr. Bass's photography. The essay includes biographical information about Dr. Bass and fifteen of his photographs which will also be included in the exhibit at Vaughn Hall. Update on gala event sculpture We are awaiting word from Catherine Ellenbecker about the progress on the sculpture that was the goal of the fund raising at her gala event. We hear that she did raise enough money and that the sculpture will be cast. Tom Frietag has designed some wonderful items that will be for sale during the exhibit. There is a handsome mug, t-shirts of several designs, a delightful calendar full of Dr. Bass photos, postcards, note cards, a magnet, and a book about Dr. Bass written by Jim Slattery that is absolutely beautiful. Our famous pie sale will be on Saturday, November 22. You’ll want to buy your Thanksgiving pies and some extra to freeze for the holidays. All homemade, we need both pie donors and pie buyers! Sale will be from 9 AM to noon or until pies are gone. They went fast last year, so mark your calendar now! M e m b e r s h i p Check the mailing label.
