THE TIDINGS Settle Memorial United Methodist Church 202 East Fourth Street Owensboro, Kentucky 42303 Church Office (270) 684-4226 Radio Broadcast -WKWC 90.3 - Sunday 11:00 A.M. Worship Service Podcast - website: www.settleumc.com Dedicated to Christ…Committed to Serve Vol. 44, No. 7 NO TIE IN JULY! We will carry on our tradition of dressing a little more casual in the sweltering heat. Feel free to leave the tie (and jacket) at the house, or wear it all, if you prefer. in July! MOVING AHEAD In Stephen Covey’s book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, we see this matrix which originated in the mind of Dwight Eisenhower: July, 2016 BACKPACK GIVEAWAY AND PICNIC On Saturday, July 23rd, the R.O.C. will be filled with children and parents coming to get backpacks with school supplies. Last year we gave out over 220 backpacks. This year we expect more to come and are in need of backpacks along with the following school supplies: rulers erasers spiral notebooks loose leaf paper #2 pencils pens glue sticks 24 count crayons Fiskar scissors Please bring your donation to the church office by Sunday, July 17th. All monies given to the school supplies fund will help to purchase additional supplies. But wait, there’s more! We will be feeding over 500 people as well, and will need donations of buns, chips, and desserts. All food items need to be in the R.O.C. by 10am on July 23rd. We will need volunteers the day of the event as well as the Wednesday before to count supplies and pack the backpacks. If you are able to help please contact Anthony Marts at [email protected] Here are a few examples of how the categories combine: • Important and urgent: Attending to a crying baby, tackling a crisis at work, and mailing your rent check • Important but not urgent: Saving for the future, getting enough exercise, studying new research concerning your line of work • Not important but urgent: Booking a flight, sharing an article, answering a phone call • Not important and not urgent: Watching "Game of Thrones," checking your Facebook, eating cookies. Most Spiritual Disciplines like reading the Bible and considering what the passage means for you, fall into the important but not urgent category. Summer is a time when we usually find a little more free time. Consider moving ahead spiritually by opening The Book. What a gift! Let’s not neglect it. The main purpose of our visioning process is to take “Our Mission” to a new level. “Our Mission”, which is published weekly in our bulletin, states: Our Mission … … … … To reach out and welcome all people To relate persons to Jesus Christ To develop and nurture persons as Christian disciples To live as faithful, loving Christian disciples in the world Early last year, we surveyed the congregation on what Settle Memorial is doing well and things that we can do to improve our commitment to “Our Mission”. Our care for people and outreach to the community through missions has been supported by GIC funding and direct member volunteer support of many projects. Worship services have been combined on several occasions, including the outdoor service at the river, bringing members together that may not ordinarily have the opportunity to worship in the same service. The digital directory is up and running and available to all members. In addition, the Vision Team and other Settle Memorial Committees met individually to conduct idea sessions on Immediate, Short Term, and Long Term actions in response to input from the congregation. From that work, a series of key projects emerged: iPad for Traditional worship which was donated anonymously and is now in use. Security System for children’s check in at Sunday School was implemented in February. The new check-in system for the Children's Department has had a really positive impact on parents, especially visitors. We love knowing that our kids are safe, and it has been great for guests to see right from the moment they walk in to Settle that this is a place where kids are cared for. Playground Improvement and expansion was completed during the GIC workday in April. The Children's Council, in conjunction with the Preschool Board, elected to upgrade and expand the current playground. This playground is used mainly for our preschool aged church children, and the actual preschool students. The equipment is geared toward the younger ages. We felt that there were some upgrades that could be made that would make the area more usable and attractive to the general church population and definitely to the older children and youth in our church. We have extended the existing fence to enclose approximately 500 more square feet of playground space for the children. This will enclose the basketball area, and add four square area and hop scotch. This will also give the preschoolers a large area to use riding toys -- something else purchased with this expansion plan. Three new playground elements have also been added: an adjustable basketball goal (good for all ages), a tetherball court, and a funnel ball court. We believe that all three of these are fun and attractive to a wide age band. A new storage center will be installed to house the riding toys and balls for usage. Boy Scout room in the basement of the church sanctuary was clearedand is being remodeled so it can be used for grades 3 – 5. The Children's Council discussed last fall ways to improve our Junior Youth Group. We feel that getting our students involved in JYF is such an important step in their faith formation. If we can get them in the habit early of making youth group a priority, then once middle school and high school arrive they will already be ingrained in the church youth programs. Those middle school and high school years can be extremely difficult to wade through, and having church friends and leaders as a regular part of their lives will definitely help! Currently JYF meets every other Sunday -- we either meet in the Sunday School rooms (which are preschool classrooms) or the Anchor -- the basement area specifically built for preschool aged children. While these are wonderful places within our church, we think JYF will be more "attractive" to our older children if they feel like it is more age appropriate for them. We envision a type of "Club/Recreation" room for our JYF kids -- something comfortable and inviting, and very age specific to our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. Media updates in worship spaces are underway with many upgrades completed and more underway. Small items, like cables and headphones, have been purchased. Visits to other churches and dialogue with vendors have been on-going. Bids have been received for monitors for SHOUT and Cry Room. Organ Console Replacement is currently underway and should be completed mid-summer Welcome Area and Shepherd Center Gathering Area have been refurbished with new furniture and a fresh coat of paint. Accessories have been added to enhance the décor and make the areas more inviting for all. Worship and Communion preparation areas are being remodeled to improve efficiency. Cabinets in the Chapel for pastors and acolytes, are installed and working well. Cabinets for the communion preparation area will be installed soon. While the Lord’s work is never done, we feel HE has guided us to make significant progress in Our Mission to support HIS work. We will keep you updated as that work continues. This is our only conference team meeting before the trip. Contact Anthony for more information: [email protected] DONATIONS NEEDED FOR MARY KENDALL HOME The Mary Kendall Home is in need of the following items: Paper towels; Non-aerosol hairspray Hair gel; SPF30 spray sunscreen These items can be taken directly to the Mary Kendall Home or the church office. Jarrett Embry and Larry Miller spent a day at Loucon recently repairing the sign at the entrance to the camp. Job well done, guys! UNITED METHODIST WOMEN During the summer months our UMW Circles do not meet, but we have a chance to serve during this time by offering extra support to one of our mission partners. We have decided to assist the Help Office. The Help Office's food pantry is low, so bringing in any nonperishable food items during the months of June, July, and August is how we can help. Because the Help Office has many clients who are homeless they specifically ask for cans with pop-tops and healthy snacks. You can bring your donations to the church office or drop them in the basket in the welcome area. Mission U is July 14-17 at Lindsey Wilson College. Summer Celebration is August 2! All circles are invited, and of course, visitors are welcome. We are meeting at the Briarpatch at 11:30am. CAVE QUEST – FOLLOWING JESUS, THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD What an amazing week we have had at Cave Quest – VBS 2016! There are so many reasons to be thankful. ~ Over 150 children learned of Jesus’ love this week. Nearly 80% are children outside of our church. What an amazing ministry opportunity! ~ We have had nearly 50 adults and youth volunteers helping us each day! But we can always use more next year. ~ Over 700 man-hours went into preparing for VBS! Yes, you read that correctly. Over 700 hours!! So many of our loving church members donated numerous items and money to help with supplies for VBS. ~ We all worked together to raise $2500.00 for Habitat for Humanity, which helps us show the hope of Jesus to people in our community. Most of all, we are thankful for the opportunity to share a message of hope and love. *Jesus gives us hope. – “O Lord, you alone are my hope.” (Psalm 71:5) *Jesus gives us courage. – “Take courage. I am here!” (Matthew 14:27) *Jesus gives us direction. – “He will show you which path to take.” (Proverbs 3:6) *Jesus gives us love. – “We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us.” (1 John 3:16) *Jesus gives us his power. – “Our great power is from God, not from ourselves.” (2 Corinthians 4:7) POSTMASTER: Send address changes to THE TIDINGS 201 East Fourth Street Owensboro, KY 42303 The Tidings (USPS 628-980) Published Monthly By SETTLE MEMORIAL UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 201 E.
