Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia (A&AA) is pleased to let Members know that
the UNCLE TOBYS team have worked with us to understand more about
school allergy management and policies. We now share new initiatives
that involve education and product changes with you.
Spreading
our school
messages
A great aspect of the partnership with UNCLE TOBYS is
the chance to spread our messages about the preferred
approach to allergen management in schools and
including our Be a M.A.T.E. program. Ultimately this
allows us to encourage as many schools as possible to
put appropriate strategies in place to help manage
the risk of food allergy.
We are working with the UNCLE TOBYS team
on a detailed communication plan
that involves contact with the media,
health professionals, bloggers,
parents and education staff.

“I’m just back from a fascinating and
informative visit to the UNCLE TOBYS oat
farms and snacks factory in Wahgunyah,
Victoria. It was so reassuring to see the great
passion and care all the staff have taken with
this project,” stated Maria Said, president
of Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia.
UNCLE TOBYS Muesli Bars have been reformulated to remove
nuts from the recipes and the new Lunchbox Friendly range
will be available for people without nut allergy in your local
store in the coming months. Nuts will no longer be used on the
UNCLE TOBYS muesli bar manufacturing lines. A&AA have
been engaged in the extensive change over planning and
implementation by the UNCLE TOBYS team. This initiative will
assist schools in further reducing the risk of allergic reactions,
by removing all nuts from all UNCLE TOBYS muesli bars.
The UNCLE TOBYS Lunchbox Friendly range is not suitable for
people with nut allergies. While the UNCLE TOBYS team have
taken the nuts out of the Muesli Bar recipes, they cannot
guarantee that other ingredients in this product have not
come into contact with tree nuts and peanuts.

The new recipe which does not contain nuts is therefore for
children without nut allergies, such as siblings or friends, who will
now be able to have the new Lunchbox Friendly muesli bars within
a school’s allergy management policy as no UNCLE TOBYS muesli
bars will contain nuts in the ingredient lists. As some of the original
stock which does contain nuts is still in the market place, people
need to check ingredient labels before packing muesli bars for
children at schools where there are nut restrictions.
What you can do to help?
If friends, family or teachers ask, explain that it is the new
Lunchbox Friendly labelled boxes that now have a ‘no added nut’
recipe and are suitable to take to school by children
without a nut allergy.
Also please look out for the new infographic that will be on the
A&AA facebook page and ‘Food Alerts’ section of our website
soon. It’s a quick checklist for all parents and school staff to get set
for allergen management with links to our key resources. Help us

Who are UNCLE TOBYS Muesli Bars
suitable for?
All UNCLE TOBYS muesli bars which have the ‘no added nut’
recipe will carry the Lunchbox Friendly logo on the front of
pack to help shoppers to easily determine which products
within the range are suitable for school lunchboxes.
Children without nut allergies will be able to enjoy new
UNCLE TOBYS Lunchbox Friendly muesli bars within a
school’s allergy management policy and around family and
friends who do have nut allergy as long as they don’t share.
What does lunchbox friendly stand for –
ie does it just reflect the no nut recipe?
A&AA does not support school nut bans. To reduce
the risk to children with life-threatening nut allergies, it is
common for schools to put a restriction on nuts as part of
their allergy management policy. Allergy & Anaphylaxis
Australia points out that although allergen restrictions
do reduce risk, this strategy must be part of an overall
management plan as risk can never be totally removed.
To think so would increase risk to those with food allergy.
Currently, Lunchbox Friendly is primarily focussed on the
‘no added nut recipe’ in UNCLE TOBYS muesli bars. The
UNCLE TOBYS team is also planning to make long term
improvements to the nutritional profile of certain snacks
products so their aim is that Lunchbox Friendly will evolve
to encompass all the reasons why UNCLE TOBYS muesli
bars are a great snack for the lunch box. Positive nutritional
product attributes currently include no artificial colours or
flavours, and a source of wholegrain.
Who are UNCLE TOBYS Muesli Bars
NOT suitable for?
The Lunchbox Friendly range of muesli bars is not suitable
for people with nut allergies. While the UNCLE TOBYS team
have taken nuts out of our recipes, it cannot be guaranteed
that other ingredients in the muesli bars have not come into
contact with tree nuts and peanuts.
REMEMBER: Nuts are healthy and nutritious for those
without nut allergy but they are best eaten at home.
