Brynna Hohl-Perrie, Uncle Wiggily
1 Brynna Hohl-Perrie, Uncle Wiggily Concept Howard R. Garis wrote the Uncle Wiggily series over the course of thirty years, publishing the first book in 1902. During this period, he wrote an Uncle Wiggily story every single day – only resting on Sundays. I tried to emphasize this sense of time by leaving each seventh page blank, giving the reader a similar pause that Garis experienced during his work week. Due to the large volume of Uncle Wiggily stories produced, a great majority will never have a chance to read every single one. I concentrated on only two Uncle Wiggily books – Uncle Wiggily’s Adventures, and Uncle Wiggily in Wonderland. I created a long, flowing block of text that shows this sense of volume in Garis’ work in the center of each spread. The book concentrates on the title of each story, giving the reader an idea of what lies in each stories’ text without having to read the entire tale. For the electronic version, I incorporated these similar ideas in a new way. The chapters are no longer split up - they are now one long, continuous reading experience, emphasizing the volume of Garis’ work. There are no split chapters. This is one of the positives of an electronic conversation, as this concept adds a repetitive and tiring scrolling experience to the piece. The big titles are repeated almost endlessly behind this text. The numbers make another appearance, now appearing as a timeline at the start of each chapter. Each seventh chapter has a similar pause as the print book, now creating a literal break in the long, flowing block of text. A publishing system that links both print and electronic books would use the strengths of each medium. Electronic versions should have a uniquely interactive quality, while print books should embrace their element of immobility. By combining differing mediums together, and including slightly differences between the two, it can make a unique reading experience for the viewer.
