Our goal is to raise 3 million meals for families and individuals struggling with hunger. Since its inception in 1996, southwestern Wisconsin’s largest food/fund drive campaign has raised nearly 30 million meals. NBC15 Share Your Holidays offers a myriad of fun events and opportunities for corporations, organizations, schools and individuals to raise funds, food and awareness for hunger relief. The campaign launched in 1996 with the vision of the late NBC15 News Anchor Mike McKinney, who grew up in a low-income household where food wasn’t always available, for community members to help their neighbors facing hunger. NBC15 teamed up with Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin and the Wisconsin National Guard and, in the first year, collected enough food and funds to provide 46,000 meals to those in need. Twenty years later, emergency food assistance demands have greatly increased. In fact, Second Harvest Foodbank is meeting nearly one million requests for help each year. With your help, we can raise more meals for families at risk of hunger! Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin began working with local hunger-relief agencies in 1986. It helps end hunger in 16 southwestern Wisconsin counties through food distribution to its partner agencies, promotion of outside food assistance programs like FoodShare, and raising awareness of hunger. As southwestern Wisconsin’s largest hunger-relief charity it meets nearly one million requests for help each year. From July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015 Second Harvest, together with its partner agencies and programs, provided 12.2 million meals. It is one of 200 members of Feeding America, the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity. For more information, visit SecondHarvestMadison.org. Hunger At A Glance Generosity fuels NBC15 Share Your Holidays. The 2014 campaign: • Raised 2.775 million meals. • Collected 734,335 meals through Business Food/Fund Drives and 56,450 meals from School Food/Fund Drives. • Ranked #37 amongst Second Harvest’s top food donors last year, if all 84,966 pounds raised were reported as one donor. • Was supported by 56 corporate sponsors, 371 businesses, 10 schools and hundreds of families and individuals. • Provided 540,000 meals from corporate financial sponsors alone, that’s 16 percent of all meals raised. This year’s NBC15 Share Your Holidays food/fund drives officially run from the week of November 2 through the week of November 30, but you may select any dates from October 1 – December 31. Remember: If you’re eligible for and requesting barrel and cash jar delivery and/or pick-up, your drive dates must fit within the assigned delivery and pick-up timeframe. Learn more on page 6. To be eligible for “Top Business” recognition during the NBC15 Share Your Holidays Grand Finale, Second Harvest MUST receive your total dollars and pounds of food by 4 p.m. on December 4. However, all businesses reporting totals by December 31 will be included in the campaign’s final meal count and the Businesses Fighting Hunger Honor Roll. Can donations collected at a different time of year count? Thank you for all donations made outside the NBC15 Share Your Holidays period and for understanding they’re ineligible for recognition. Why should we set a goal? And how? A goal is a great motivator. Plan to collect a certain number of meals, dollars or pounds. Second Harvest can provide 3 meals for every $1 donated, so a goal of $200 is equivalent to 600 meals. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates 1.2 pounds of food makes one meal, so a goal of 500 pounds is equivalent to 417 meals. Whatever your goal, keep it achievable and have fun! How can Matching Gifts increase the impact of our food/fund drive? Some companies encourage participation by offering to donate a certain amount if an employee or customer goal is reached. For example, a goal to collect 500 pounds of food is equivalent to 417 meals (at 1.2 pounds/meal) and your company could match with a cash donation of $139 ($1=3 meals). Other businesses match employee cash donations dollar-for-dollar to certain charities. Ask if your leadership will match employee contributions to Second Harvest and visit SecondHarvestMadison.org/MatchingGifts to learn more. When the food/fund drive is over, is that it? No! Schedule a recap meeting and make notes for next year: what worked well, what you’d do differently and what great ideas arose after your drive began that you didn’t get to implement. This is also a time for celebration! 11 What are the best ways to motivate participation, maximize donations and have fun? There are SO many ways to conduct a drive and motivate employees, vendors and customers to join in. What will it take? A little friendly competition? An incentive? Use your creativity! Here are a few ideas: ;; Virtual Food Drive: As your organization’s Food/Fund Drive Coordinator, streamline your fundraising with a Team Donation Page. Learn more on page 3 and get started at SecondHarvestMadison.org/SYHVirtual. ;; Fundraisers: Hold a bake sale or potluck. Allow employees who donated a casual dress or jeans day. Structure a competition or challenge between departments, floors or locations. Collect spare change desk to desk. Invite employees and customers to throw a pie at their boss or customer service person in exchange for a donation. Do a leadership jail and bail. Suggest employees brown-bag-it and donate the amount they would’ve spent on a restaurant lunch. If considering a raffle, you need a license from the State of Wisconsin Department of Administration’s Division of Gaming: http://doa.wi.gov/divisions/gaming/charitable-gaming/raffle-license ;; Food Drive Themes: Create excitement and encourage donations of most needed items. Do a drive for breakfast (cereal and canned fruit) or “brown bag” healthy kids’ lunches or with peanut butter and jelly. Or incorporate days of the week in your theme such as Morning Monday and Tin Can Tuesday. ;; Market Your Food/Fund Drive: NBC15 Share Your Holidays posters and cash donation container labels are available, and more marketing tools can be downloaded at SecondHarvestMadison.org/SYHToolkit. Use your company email, intranet, bulletin board, newsletter and paycheck inserts to spread the word. ;; Show Your Team’s Progress: Make a giant pie chart to represent a dinner plate to track the number of meals collected. A cash donation of $1 provides 3 meals. One meal equals 1.2 pounds of food so, for example, 500-pound goal is equivalent to 417 meals. ;; Prizes or Incentives Spark Competition: Reward participants with special treats, corporate identity clothing, a jeans day, a half-day off with pay, or a week to sleep in an extra hour or leave an hour early. Get prizes or discounted services from other companies to urge participation. Retail and service businesses may offer free or discounted services to encourage customer participation. ;; Special Events & Competition: create enthusiasm for your drive with a kick-off event or a little friendly competition among classes. Invite your local newspaper and town officials to participate in newsworthy events. Share your event with Second Harvest, and NBC15 could send a camera crew to cover it. Complete and fax the form on page 16 to Second Harvest. 12 K-12 Schools - Successful Food/Fund Drive FAQs What dates should our food/fund drive run? This year’s NBC15 Share Your Holidays food/fund drives officially run from the week of November 2 through the week of November 30, but you may select any dates from October 1 – December 31. Remember: If you’re eligible for and requesting barrel and cash jar delivery and/or pick-up, your drive dates must fit within the assigned delivery and pick-up timeframe. Learn more on page 6. To be eligible for “Top School” recognition during the NBC15 Share Your Holidays Grand Finale, Second Harvest MUST receive your total dollars and pounds of food by 4 p.m. on December 4. However, all schools reporting totals by December 31 will be included in the campaign’s final meal count and the Schools Fighting Hunger Honor Roll. Can donations collected at a different time of year count? Thank you for all donations raised outside the NBC15 Share Your Holidays period and for understanding they’re ineligible for recognition. Who will lead our school’s food/fund drive? Any club, organization, class or group of students interested in community service and committed to leading an event can organize a successful food/fund drive. Students will plan, promote and implement the drive. Consider a Food/Fund Drive Committee. Some high schools “adopt” an elementary or middle school and provide leadership to help younger students get involved in this service project. Why should we set a goal? And how? A goal is a great motivator. Plan to collect a certain number of meals, dollars or pounds. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates 1.2 pounds of food makes one meal, so a goal of 500 pounds is equivalent to 417 meals. Second Harvest can provide 3 meals for every $1 donated, so a goal of $200 is equivalent to 600 meals. Whatever your goal, keep it achievable and have fun! What logistics should we consider? • Will you use boxes, grocery bags, borrowed grocery carts – and from where? (Make sure you will be able to lift the boxes when full.) • Where will the containers be located when the drive is in progress? Donations should be kept dry, at room temperature and secure. • Will the collection containers need to be emptied periodically? • Where will the food/money be stored until the end of the drive? • Does the food and money need to be secured overnight? • If collecting for a local food pantry, how will the food be delivered? • Could a class hour be dedicated for food/fund drive collection? • Could a volunteer experience at Second Harvest Foodbank or the food pantry you’re supporting be scheduled? 13 How should we promote the food/fund drive? Use your creativity to build enthusiasm and motivate fellow students to get involved. Identify all the methods available to you to develop a promotional plan and get the word out. Here are a few ideas: ;; Themes: generate excitement and encourage donations of most needed items. They also spark ideas for promotional posters, announcements, and student and/or parent newspaper articles or ads. Create excitement and encourage donations of most needed items. Do a drive for breakfast (cereal and canned fruit) or “brown bag” healthy kids’ lunches or with peanut butter and jelly. Or incorporate days of the week in your theme such as Morning Monday and Tin Can Tuesday. ;; Show Your Team’s Progress: Make a giant pie chart to represent a dinner plate to track the number of meals collected. A cash donation of $1 provides 3 meals. One meal equals 1.2 pounds of food so, for example, 500-pound goal is equivalent to 417 meals. ;; Special Events & Competition: create enthusiasm for your drive with a kick-off event or a little friendly competition among classes. Invite your local newspaper and town officials to participate in newsworthy events. Share your event with Second Harvest, and NBC15 could send a camera crew to cover it. Complete and fax the form on page 16 to Second Harvest. ;; Publicity: NBC15 Share Your Holidays posters and cash container labels are available (request on enclosed Participation Form) or create posters customized to your school. Use school announcements and school and community newspapers to promote, report results and thank all supporters when your drive is over. Schools outside Madison often have great success getting local newspaper coverage. Schools in Madison may find it more challenging because there are so many schools; unique events to promote your drive may help. If you want the media to cover an event, submit a press release 1-2 weeks before the event date so they can put it on their calendars. When the food/fund drive is over, is that it? No! Schedule a recap meeting and make notes for next year: what worked well, what you’d do differently and what great ideas arose after your drive began that you didn’t get to implement. This is also a time to celebrate and feel pride in your leadership, volunteerism and school spirit! 14 Identification Label Tape completed label to EACH FOOD COLLECTION BARREL & OVERFLOW CONTAINER to receive credit for your donations!
