A MESSAG E FR O M CanCare President, Nancy Tucker O nce again the Friends of CanCare hosted an incredibly successful National CanCare Survivors Day Luncheon. They stayed focused on our mission of the day, which is to provide an opportunity for cancer survivors in the Houston area to celebrate their survivorship, to gain strength from each other, and to acknowledge the survivorship of over 13 million cancer survivors in the U.S. Our keynote speaker, Captain Mark Kelly, talked about literally traveling among the stars into the vast unknown of outer space – something I’m guessing not many of us have done. But like many of us, he has also faced the vast unknown of another uncharted journey: cancer. For anyone who has ever received a cancer diagnosis, I can compare it to the gripping opening scene of the movie Gravity, which occurs in a place that’s familiar to Captain Kelly: outer space. In this scene, the character played by Sandra Bullock is safely tethered to a space shuttle until highspeed debris disconnects her and sends her tumbling over and over, terrified and out of control, through outer space. Her commander and veteran astronaut, played by George Clooney, extends an experienced, helpful hand just at the right time to bring her safely back to the shuttle. Now – who wouldn’t CanCare President and CEO, Nancy Tucker with Capitan Mark Kelly want to be rescued by George Clooney!? But if just at the right time to extend a hand of you can’t have George by your side, I can strength and encouragement. Someone tell you first-hand – when you are facing who has been there and understands how a diagnosis of cancer – that the next best to navigate the unexpected physical and thing is a CanCare volunteer. emotional challenges. They are shining For someone facing a cancer journey, stars in the vast unknown of cancer and a a CanCare volunteer is what George source of hope for all those struggling with Clooney’s character was to Sandra this disease and all those who share their Bullock’s: someone who comes along struggle. National Cancer Survivors Day Highlights C anCare held its 20th Annual National Cancer Survivors Day Luncheon May 15 at The Westin Galleria in honor and memory of cancer survivors and their families. Now every morning I thank G-d for letting me be a part of each day.” Jessica shares, “My story goes back three weeks before my wedding when I started to feel like I had a swollen potato stuck in my throat. I also started feeling a weird pressure in my chest and I thought that maybe I had too much stress as my job was quite demanding, and that the chest pain I was feeling was due to anxiety. I decided to quit my job and focus on my upcoming wedding. I went to my boss and with a sad feeling and explained that I was not feeling well and I wanted to quit my job for the reasons I just mentioned. He was extremely Jessica and Estaban nice and since I was getting married, he told me to quit after my wedding and honeymoon, so that being unemployed didn’t add to my stress.” A few days later, Jessica was still feeling bad so she went to a Fast Care facility where they told her she had a respiratory infection. She said they gave her a bunch of pills and said she would be fine in a few days. They did not run any tests. That night when she got home, she asked her boss if she could take two days off because she needed sleep. 4 ww w. ca n ca re . o rg “March 14, I woke up with a sharp pain in my chest. Perhaps his biggest contribution to CanCare is his involvement with Rick Rice Park in Katy, Texas. Bill Odle Bill is the Managing Principal for TBG Partners, a landscape architecture and planning firm. The park idea started with one of Bill’s clients, Cory Hawryluk, a long time CanCare board member and member of the Interstate MUD Board of Directors, which is the group responsible for the park. Bill was inspired by the mission of CanCare throughout this project. “I believe that everyone needs a teammate in whatever you do. CanCare is a great teammate when you are fighting cancer. CanCare gives people LOVE, HOPE and allows them to DREAM,” states Bill. On May 1, 2014 there was an official dedication at the park for the “CanCare Plaza” which honors cancer survivors and offers them a place of tranquility. Bill Odle was the lead architect for the design of this beautiful park. When you visit the CanCare Plaza and you look out over the pond and the walk paths, you will see the huge letters that spell out the words “LOVE, HOPE, and DREAM” across the landscape, along with quotes in the plaza from cancer survivors involved with CanCare that correspond with each word. Bill’s personal experience with cancer occurred when his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer eight years ago. Bill and his family grew through the experience and wished that they had known about Team CanCare Wants You! Get Ready, Set, Go! Y ou can hear the footsteps as they come barreling down towards the finish line…the crowd roars…cheers…bells ringing…horns blowing…it’s Team CanCare!!!
