A Celebration of Cancer Survivorship
C
anCare held its
National Cancer
Survivors Day
Luncheon on May 28 at The
Westin Hotel, Memorial
City. This event, held in
honor and in memory
of cancer survivors and
their families, was as
moving as always, but
especially significant, as
CanCare celebrates its
25th Anniversary. The
luncheon honored all of
our amazing volunteers,
who Nancy Tucker
affectionately referred to
as, “the heart and soul of
this organization.” Guest
Beth Black, Nancy Tucker, Curt Hammock, Warren Bright, Kerry McKay, Dominique
speaker, Dr. Jen Arnold, star Sachse, and Dr. Jen Arnold
of TLC’s The Little Couple,
neonatologist, and cancer
survivor, was an incredible
addition to the anniversary
luncheon. Engaging the
crowd effortlessly and with
wonderful humor, she spoke
of her own journey and
triumph over cancer, all
while starting a new family
with two small children.
The event was emceed
by KPRC news anchor,
Dominique Sachse and
co-chaired by Beth Black
and Kerry McKay. CanCare
volunteer, Curt Hammock,
also shared his moving
story of cancer survivorship.

A WORD FR O M O U R P R E SID E NT, NA NCY T UCK ER
I
n its 25 years of providing support
and Hope to cancer patients and
their families, CanCare has stayed
focused on its mission: to improve the
quality of life for cancer patients and their
families. We remain dedicated to making a
difference for those struggling with cancer
by offering them solace of hope, peace, joy
and wholeness.
CanCare has always been aware of
the need for continual reevaluation and
renewal as an essential part of growth
and improvement. Over the past year,
we have been hard at work developing a
strategic plan to better serve a growing
number of cancer patients with excellence.
In the process of developing this plan, we
relied on the involvement of volunteers,
board members, friends of CanCare,
staff, members of the community, and an
outside facilitator. The time and energy
expended on the project was phenomenal,
and we are thankful for everyone who
participated.
The process has helped us formulate
highly ambitious goals, but our goals
should be ambitious for this simple
reason: CanCare provides a unique and
extraordinary service. Our plan confirms
our mission, focuses on improving
volunteer management and support,
serving an increasing number of patients,
and continues to improve the quality and
cost effectiveness of our services with the
maximization of utilization of technology.
Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “The task
before us is never as great as the power
behind us.” How apt is that statement
as we move CanCare forward to the next
great level! Part of the “power behind us”
is our solid history of service, achievement,
and growth. An even greater part of
the power is our committed Board of
Directors, our devoted support volunteers,
our community partners and our hard
working staff. And the greatest power of
all, driving us forward, is our faith.
Our ministry is devoted to doing God’s
work, bringing Hope to those who need it
most. At every turn, we are strengthened
and encouraged by prayer. And we know
that the same God who has guided us in
the past will continue to guide us in the
future.

M
arch 1, 2012 was the date
when Joe McGoff received
the dreaded news that he
had cancer. With a stage 4 throat and
larynx cancer diagnosis and a massive
tumor threatening to block his entire
air passage, he required an immediate
tracheotomy and started an aggressive
treatment including ten weeks of
chemotherapy and eight weeks of
radiation.
After being declared cancer free in

Cancer Survivor Sunday
Prayers and Hope
Special thanks
to photographer,
Kevin McGowan
C
anCare’s Atlanta-based volunteers have a special connection with patients they
visit at partner hospitals. Each new cancer patient is given a prayer shawl,
handmade by volunteers from CanCare member churches, Johns Creek United
Methodist Church, Alpharetta Presbyterian Church, Johns Creek Presbyterian Church,
and other local church groups. During the visit, CanCare volunteers wrap the prayer shawl
around the shoulders of the cancer patient and let them know that while each prayer shawl
is knitted or crocheted, the ladies
who make them are praying for their
comfort and healing.
As a part of National Cancer
Survivors Day, CanCare volunteers
and Prayer Shawl volunteers were
paired up and asked to share their
roles with each other. Together they
were able to learn the important
partnership their volunteer work
creates in offering hope to cancer
patients.

organization’s quest to provide emotional
support and hope to those with cancer. All
have a strong desire to further CanCare’s

specialized in caring ministries, as well
as being an eight-year survivor of nonHodgkin’s lymphoma, she brings a great
understanding for one-to-one support
for cancer patients, their caregivers and
families. Her two sons and her family have
been great sources of support and are her
joy of life in these years of survivorship.

“When my family learned about my dad’s
cancer, there was an immediate fear of
the unknown,” shares Amy. “Being part
of an organization that provides hope and
encouragement during this scary time
is truly a blessing and I look forward to
bringing my previous experience and
relationships in the healthcare industry to
promote the mission of CanCare.”

Spotlight on Board Member,
Dixie Ward
D
ixie Ward is president of the
Friends of CanCare Board and
a member of CanCare’s Board
of Directors. She was first introduced to
CanCare through her daughter who joined
the Young Friends of CanCare in the
early 2000’s. “I went to the Young Friends
Crawfish Boil in 2006 and met Nancy and
some of the other members of the team,
and wanted to join and help in any way
that I could. Soon after, Dixie joined the
Friends of CanCare and has been involved
since. She has supported CanCare’s many
outreach and fundraising events including
service on the Golf Classic committee,
Team CanCare Marathon committee, and
Survivors Day Luncheon committee.
Dixie shares, “I believe in what CanCare
is doing because I have seen those folks
that CanCare has helped in the fight. I am
a CanCare volunteer myself and I know
that when I am working with another
caregiver, I am helping them through a
very stressful and emotional time with
their loved one. What we do at CanCare
is so unique
with our
approach that
it is all about
listening and
the patient’s
wellbeing.”
Dixie’s son
was diagnosed
with sarcoma
of the fibrous
tissue, which
is called Fibro
Dixie Ward
Sarcoma, in his
early twenties. “I know no matter when
cancer happens it is never a good time, and
for my son, he had just started a job and
was living in an apartment on his own, and
learning to be an adult. He felt like life was
against him and did not understand why
this happened. As a mom, there is nothing
worse than your child facing illness. He
had to move back home with us, and
even though he had a lot of support, felt
alone. It was a difficult time for all of us
and looking back, I believe that if I had
someone to talk with during this time, I
would have felt less afraid, which is why I
believe so strongly in what CanCare has to
offer. Thankfully, we all made it through
and my son lives a good life with his wife
and two daughters in California, where he
is a chef.”
Dixie has two grown children, four
grandchildren, and a Bullmastiff that
thinks he is a lap dog at 128 lbs. She has
lived in the Houston area her entire life
and has a deep love for the city and its
people. She is Vice President, Account
Management at MasterCard Worldwide
and has been in the financial services
business for over 30 years. She enjoys
cooking, spending time with family, her
job, and traveling.
Dixie shares, “I get great joy being on
the CanCare Board. The people I serve
with are very passionate about CanCare
and what we are doing, and I am proud to
be a part of this organization.”
