The DXer January 2014 - Northern California DX Club
The DXer January 2014 The Official Publication Of The Northern California DX Club President’s Letter By Jim K8JRK Dear Fellow NCDXC Members, This issue of the DXer has a summary of our recent member survey about the DXCC program and I thank all who participated. Some of the outcome is clear and of interest. Take a moment for a long look. Silent Keys - Page 23 Jack Troster, W6ISQ Mark Nowell, WI7YN It seems the UK DX Foundation also did a member survey a week or so ago and I suspect more groups will follow. The UK Survey was written as questions that were “tested with a few of the Honour Role members” (sic) so I am particularly pleased we assembled member views rather than the questions of a select few. Oddly, the ARRL solicited their views, something I don’t think has happened stateside yet. Turning to DX I note that Mt. Athos, North Korea, Tromelin, Glorioso and Juan de Nova make up the 5 Most Wanted by West Coast DXers as of early in 2013. Likely Juan de Nova will drop down and be replaced by Eritrea. The Board recently was asked to support a French team for their November 2014 expedition to Tromelin so with that in the pipeline we see a little progress towards the very tough ones. On that subject of DXpeditions the Board is collecting input for DXpedition Of The Year--- how others evaluate them—what criteria, etc. is used. Should be a lively Board discussion. The noise level at the site is high making it very difficult for remote signals to capture the receiver—especially with a mountain in the way. Coordination, voters, power issues, directional antennas and the like are all on the table and we are receiving very good technical input. In the ‘olden days” as my granddaughters put it (the 80’s! ) we had no DXSUMMIT et al to spot DX and what repeaters existed had traffic that rarely considered DX unless it was how far from home you and your car were. Most of us hunted on 2 meter simplex in small groups—maybe 4 or 5 guys at most. I think whole days go by, now, with no repeater usage. I for one, do not want to see it fall to further disuse and would like to see it used as we use the chat—a lot. Expect to hear from the Board as to what YOU think. The Board will start he Member of the Year process about the time you read this along with a budget review and the above noted survey—likely about more than just the repeater. We are on track to have the first 6 meetings of the year in 3 new places and 3 at our regular Holders site so please check the web site regularly. 73—JIM It’s About DX Board Meeting Minutes Posted The minutes from the December 15 Board of Directors Meeting are posted on the Members Only page at www.ncdxc.org. After his return from Myanmar last week, Paul notified the Board of his desire to step down as a Director. He remains a full member of NCDXC. Paul’s resignation created a second Director opening on the Board. Director 1: Replacement for K6MM who moved into the Transition VIce President role. Director 2: Replacement for N6PSE. From a pool of several qualified candidates, the remaining Directors of the Club voted this weekend to fill these two open Director positions with Tony Dowler (K6BV) and Andreas Junge (N6NU). The Officers page on the website has been updated with these changes. http://ncdxc.org/pages/officers.html Please welcome Tony and Andreas to the NCDXC Board and wish them well in their new roles. 73, John Miller, K6MM Vice President Page 3 Photos Of Holiday Party Photos: Courtesy of George, N6NKT K6MKF Gives a Thumbs Up K8JRK, W6OPO, K6KLY K8JRK, K6GFJ NE5EE, KK6EK K6MD, K6WA, Mariko, W6CYX K6WX Page 4 W6KM, K6KLY AG6RK, YL, KG6AM KJ6UXU, Sue Mary, K6GFJ, W6OAT W6KM, N6OI, K9YC N6NKT Page 5 W6LPM, K6SSJ N6IWJ W6KM, AE6RR K6RIM. The Party Is Over! Regarding the Recent Member DXCC Survey One may analyze the recent member survey about the DXCC program many ways. One way is to consider that the lower the number of “neutral” votes, the more meaningful the “agree” or “disagree” conclusion. Suppose, for example, you took just the top half, ranked by lowest neutral - that would be questions #15, #3, #5, #1, #10, #12, #13 and #11. All these had neutral at 20% or less with question #15 only seeing 7% neutral. Continuing with these 8 questions one could then say “well, which had the clearest opinion?” The leader is #10 - “the DXAC should be doing this survey.” This question was 41 to 6 “agree” with #3 next at 43 to 7 for “the Advisory Committee should be transparent and publicise its minutes.” The point of my comments? Question #15, about remote having different rules by band was 39 to 12 and remote is determined by transmitter location for entity was 28 to 20. All in all, we members seem to first want to be asked and then kept informed about our DXCC program, or so it seems to me. Troster, W6ISQ, became a Silent Key on January 11, 2014. His wife of 65 years, Marguerite (KC6NFE), was at his bedside when he passed away. Jack, along with Vince Chinn K6KQN (now W6EE), Lee Shaklee W6BH (SK), and Don Schliesser K6RV, founded the Northern California DX Foundation in October, 1972. Jack served as an NCDXF Board member for 26 years before stepping down in July, 1998. He was the Foundation’s third President, serving from 1975 until 1986. Jack had an enormous passion for amateur radio. He was first licensed in September, 1935, at age 14, as W2ISQ in Yonkers, New York. He received his W6ISQ callsign when he moved to California shortly after the end of World War II. Among Jack’s many radio accomplishments and awards were DXCC #1 Honor Roll on the Mixed, CW and SSB modes; 5B-DXCC; 5B-WAS (Certificate #4); and USA Counties Award (for working all 3,076 USA counties, which he did completely on CW!). Jack was a member of the FOC and the A1 Operators Club; he served as president of both the Northern California DX Club and the Northern California Contest Club; he was a Contributing Editor of QST magazine and was the Pacific Division’s representative on the ARRL DX Advisory Committee. He was a director of the Quarter Century Wireless Association and for years wrote the monthly QCWA column published in World Radio News. Jack was named NCDXC’s DXer of the Year, and in 1988 he was inducted as the 27th member of the CQ DX Hall of Fame. As impressive as were all his radio achievements, even more so was Jack himself. He was the consummate gentleman. He was warm and welcoming to everyone he met, and many amateur radio operators today enjoy the hobby as a direct result of his nurturing, encouragement and enthusiasm. Jack was known for his quick wit and encyclopedic knowledge of amateur radio history. His passing leaves a huge void. Amateur radio has lost one of its giants. — Rusty Epps, W6OAT Mark Nowell, WI7YN - SK It is with great sadness that I report the passing of Mark Nowell, WI7YN, until recently manager of Ham Radio Outlet in Oakland. Funeral arrangements are pending at this writing (1/14). Mark suffered a heart attack while riding in a vehicle on Friday (1/10). He was driven to a nearby hospital, where he died a short time later. Mark had a history of heart disease, had recently been hospitalized and was in deteriorating health. Mark was the best ham friend that I never actually spoke to on Amateur Radio! As an EMCOMM leader, I sent dozens of individuals and agencies directly to Mark because I knew they would receive excellent care and advice. He never disappointed me. Nor have I ever heard anyone who didn’t like Mark, which is pretty rare in any sales job. My wife, Elionora, K6SWE, and I once helped Mark close the Oakland store (she swept and I closed the bars) before going to dinner one evening. I always looked forward to our visits and will greatly miss our friendship. I know many others feel the same. Besides Amateur Radio, Mark also enjoyed astronomy. I regret never going to a star party with him. Mark will be missed. — David Coursey, N5FDL (reprinted from n5fdl.com) Page 23 NCDXC DX Ladder All Entity Counts Must Already Be Confirmed With LOTW-QSLs or QSL Cards Call Sign K6TA K5YY W6OAT N7NG K6RIM K5JB K6ANP N6JV W6CUA K6XN AJ6V K6SQL W6CYX N6TA W6DPD W6OSP NI6T W6KM K6MD K6KLY AG6Q KX6C KC6AWX W6EKR W6NWS K6UM N6TV K6CTA KI6CG W6OD N7TW AC6HY K8JRK K6KO W6QUV K6BZS KY6R K6YP N6TQ N6ATD K6SIK DXCC 377 375 373 372 367 367 365 360 357 355 354 354 353 353 353 353 352 351 351 349 349 349 348 348 347 345 345 345 343 343 342 342 341 339 338 338 336 335 334 334 333 Chal 160m 80m 2765 212 296 2636 196 289 2610 133 279 1826 166 205 2310 45 173 40m 332 240 328 257 299 30m 301 297 271 140 289 20m 339 340 339 320 340 17m 325 314 316 158 308 15m 332 278 336 266 324 12m 305 294 284 121 255 10m 320 287 320 191 268 6m 3 101 4 2 9 1394 2815 58 189 18 13 16 167 263 168 140 118 218 318 246 217 153 73 321 179 142 2 320 338 352 330 282 84 327 190 213 6 239 334 329 288 201 41 310 134 170 1 190 322 297 249 160 4 93 1 3 113 0 174 127 21 10 286 65 6 181 100 227 198 21 17 330 100 68 285 100 164 129 278 286 320 16 339 100 128 335 100 161 207 168 2 326 248 231 253 8 329 100 74 253 100 181 157 126 2 301 242 179 193 9 309 100 53 314 100 1 0 51 278 152 289 205 207 249 337 344 328 327 271 305 220 190 286 3 316 320 305 307 202 253 144 152 244 1 292 240 285 282 160 14 144 29 41 168 123 200 135 147 152 101 126 255 145 227 152 122 167 191 151 96 236 174 298 298 202 263 97 320 321 318 316 293 318 311 280 300 180 283 22 216 43 243 271 141 248 284 310 222 271 242 285 263 240 227 146 255 6 056 26 226 238 126 173 267 293 224 199 199 263 203 173 179 69 1123 2250 2172 1427 1847 79 12 0 19 1 153 118 37 44 1964 848 1650 47 1 14 161 83 141 249 113 183 307 249 303 234 59 196 270 166 255 227 40 176 251 137 237 1765 939 1789 1514 1153 242 2772 465 2398 2254 1543 2055 2043 1036 1785 1726 1018 178 229 1 99 42 319 9 249 161 168 2 4 9 237 262 105 243 218 145 (continues on next page) 9 303 3 272 4 1 107 1 60 2 0 1 0 56 1 3 Page 24 N3RC K6IPM K6MM N6NU W6YD K2RD K9YC W6JJW K6DY WX6W KE1B W6DR W6EKR/M W6OPO W6RK K6MKF N6BM W6PK W6GJB EA2RY N6WM K6BV NR6M NE5EE AD6HF AE6RR N6MM N6DVR N6NKT WD0FAA K6ML W6NN K6MMM AG6HE WT6X KU6W AI6RE WB6VYH N6OI K6TU W6MSB K6MP WB6MRQ PJ2/W6DR 332 332 329 319 319 315 313 312 310 308 306 303 299 293 288 284 282 282 274 273 264 261 259 254 254 235 227 215 210 209 206 200 159 150 142 131 125 104 103 100 84 75 46 19 1780 1287 1487 1397 51 1605 1882 764 958 568 1467 1121 619 826 1187 910 955 648 760 73 129 0 7 0 18 70 1074 532 863 602 525 682 653 358 443 334 473 489 297 368 328 257 104 197 208 155 123 75 25 141 72 109 111 19 143 183 3 12 26 79 86 6 18 77 14 22 9 44 60 80 3 2 8 19 40 8 3 204 145 196 204 5 216 234 74 30 71 167 161 4 88 192 58 93 51 106 134 148 23 68 23 73 72 63 8 181 8 0 4 5 3 0 0 0 28 2 26 25 10 24 28 0 22 6 3 0 0 15 0 4 0 13 0 0 0 3 1 12 1 3 1 0 74 18 53 84 78 69 50 11 6 8 39 4 27 7 0 36 25 1 19 2 1 0 0 1 36 0 0 10 4 1 131 127 71 177 22 1 19 98 68 20 116 19 45 4 40 72 45 0 1 14 27 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 299 311 297 250 204 294 280 227 223 199 280 258 194 243 256 196 227 229 181 208 215 230 192 195 213 187 153 102 227 211 175 166 152 146 128 120 179 239 93 154 25 230 64 68 99 144 109 151 56 89 99 113 16 148 91 30 72 96 31 280 232 241 228 127 254 245 155 204 107 245 210 230 178 179 220 217 160 168 233 188 158 196 150 92 127 146 84 133 188 68 140 20 161 36 13 43 69 120 77 44 12 60 101 13 115 65 10 35 69 13 242 170 168 164 114 237 195 122 181 101 185 164 104 135 133 170 122 95 115 126 145 89 140 70 62 116 111 116 88 71 149 134 37 108 108 60 44 48 75 35 32 14 5 19 43 48 1 12 55 0 40 6 8 2 8 4 3 0 110 130 124 131 124 40 112 54 11 70 49 51 32 21 0 18 28 20 0 18 18 0 23 5 4 0 13 5 1 0 74 33 44 107 15 39 30 64 24 57 17 43 18 28 17 3 6 2 5 12 0 6 0 4 4 1 2 2 0 0 5 43 3 0 1 2 2 6 2 3 2 2 0 0 0 1 8 1 1 0 2 0 0 Page 25 How To Update Your DX Ladder Numbers • For all DXCC and band counts, only include QSOs for which you already have LOTW-QSLs or QSL cards. • Entries in the ClubLog NCDXC DXCC League are imported into DX Ladder if the member is registered at http://www.clublog.org and member log is uploaded at least once per year. • Members who prefer not to use ClubLog can use the web form at: www.ncdxc.org/pages/dxladder.html . Band information is helpful but not required. • The DXCC count includes current and deleted entities. • The Chal (Challenge) count is the sum of the current entity band counts (no deleted entities) and is automatically calculated in the DX Ladder spreadsheet.
