Introduction Ask students to share about times in their lives when they endured physical hardships. These situations could be during an illness, camping, playing sports, etc. Follow-up by asking, “Why do people endure physical hardships?” Share with students that over the centuries, many Catholics lived through very intense physical pain for their faith. Explain that martyrs died for their faith and many Christians suffered so they could share their faith with others. Share that one group who endured great hardships was the early missionaries that came to North America. D. Procedure 1. Tell students they are going to get the opportunity to travel along with Fr. Claude Jean Allouez as he makes a journey from Quebec to Lake Superior. Distribute the lesson handout. After reading what is planned for the journey, have students determine what they would pack in the one book bag they can take with them. 2. Have students trace the journey on the student worksheet by following the itinerary. 3. Read the names of the other missions that were served by Fr. Allouez. Have students locate each of the sites on the map and fill in the name of the mission next to the corresponding number. 4. Divide the class into small groups. Write the following questions on slips of paper and give one to each group to discuss and report back to the class. Why did Fr. Allouez deal with the hardships? What qualities would a person need to survive a missionary life? Why not build a church in Quebec and tell the Indians to come to this church to hear about the faith? Would you make the journey with Fr. Allouez? E. Assessment Share with students that Fr. Allouez arrived in Green Bay barefoot and covered in ice. Students will draw the scene of Fr. Allouez arriving in Green Bay. Using a speech bubble, students will write a prayer Fr. Allouez might say at that moment. Students should include in the prayer some of the hardships he endured as a missionary. F. Follow-up Activities Students could create thank you cards for current missionaries and send them to Maryknoll or another missionary organization. 7 Copyright © 2015 History of the Catholic Community Missionaries Fr.
