Applications to join will be available at the 12 13 14 2014 AGM to Cambridge: Plans Moving Forward By Dennis Eklof, Jaguar Association of New England (JANE) As most of you undoubtedly already know, JANE is hosting the JCNA Annual General Meeting on the weekend of April 4, 2014. This is a huge undertaking for our club, but I am happy to report that we are moving ahead aggressively with the event planning. As chairperson of the planning committee I have a great group of contributors who are energetically moving forward with planning. The main features of the event are already finalized: The main venue will be the Hyatt Regency Hotel on Memorial Drive in Cambridge. It will be a terrific venue for the event, with fine meeting and banquet spaces, space for us to display over 20 cars, and newly renovated guest rooms. The Friday social event will feature an evening at the MIT Museum, a short bus ride from the hotel. We will be adding some directly carrelated aspects to the already fine museum displays representing MIT’s engineering excellence in robotics, holograms, and other fascinating engineering marvels. We also plan a fine spread of food and, of course, a cash bar. The event will be open to all JANE members and will be an excellent opportunity to see a new aspect of our area’s culture, as well as meet Jag lovers from around the country. Put April 4th on your calendar! During most of Saturday, the delegates to the meeting will be tied up with discussing and voting on various rule changes that will govern JCNA events in 2014, but we plan to go all out in organizing a variety of optional area activities for non-delegate attendees. Saturday evening there will be a cocktail reception and the annual Awards Banquet. This is always a fun evening and another opportunity to get to know JCNA members from across North America. We are still working on selecting the main guest speaker for the evening, but we will keep you posted. As with Friday evening, the banquet is open to all JANE members. The final event of the weekend will be a Sunday breakfast at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum. While the Museum is not sufficiently large to handle the 200+ attendees we anticipate on Friday night, we couldn’t have the national meeting here without tying in such a unique treasure as LAAM. All JANE members are also welcome at this Sunday morning event. If you want to stay upto-date on what’s going on surrounding this meeting, go to the JANE website. There you can sign up to get email updates by clicking the 2014 AGM Info link, and you can read the notes from all of our planning meetings by clicking the JCNA AGM 2014 Planning Notes link. As the year passes, we will need more and more volunteers to make all this happen, so give me a shout and join our group! Speaking of the group, I need to thank the members of the AGM Planning Committee for the great job they are all doing toward making this major event a resounding success. John Brady, Margie Cahn, Chuck Centore, Jim Coull, Prebble Eklof, John Feng, Ed Hal,l Carl Hanson, Don Holden, Alec Karys, Rich Kosinski, Lauren MacCarthy, Tom Moses, Dean Saluti, Jim Sambold, Betsy Taylor-Kennedy, Gordon Taylor, Jennifer Taylor CatScan Publisher Harold Leggett is an Associate Member of JANE 15 Club Notes In this section of the CatScan we highlight the changed, the new, and the different. Since Joyce did such a wonderful job with the last Concours, she agreed to be in charge of arrangements again. Monthly meetings are generally on the first Wednesday of each month, excepting June (Concours d’Élégance) and December (annual meeting and Christmas luncheon) Be prepared for additional dues increases to reflect JCNA’s dues structure. In March of 2012 AGM, JCNA raised dues by $8.00 annually. It could happen again in 2013. Don’t be surprised by the addition of one or more new road trips to the club calendar. A number of events are being plotted and planned, so watch the calendar with an eagle eye to assure that you don’t miss a pop-up opportunity for a good time Minutes The minutes were read and approved. Treasurer’s Report Elizabeth handed out copies of the February’s financial statement to the members reminding them to either hand them back or dispose of them appropriately. Jaguar Drivers’ Club, Area 51 In response to the President's opening comments, Elizabeth indicated the fund raiser brought in $408.00, including a $25.00 donation from the Harpers who were unable to attend. The amount of $384.79 for club sweaters appeared both as income and expenditure since that amount was collected by Sue from individual purchasers. Elizabeth deposited that amount and sent Print-Tex a single check. She referred to this as a pass-through. The North Central Region, Louisville Area Affiliate of the Elizabeth also noted the bank statement from Stockyards does not reach her until a few days after the monthly meeting and noted two large checks written in January ($1380 to JCNA and $850 to support our AGM delegates, Judy and Wayne Miller) would appear on the February statement. Thus, the total in the bank currently is between $3100 and $3200. When Jacob was sick and in a wheel chair getting his treatments, he always wanted to go look at all the cool cars, no matter where he was. The foundation that connected Jacob with the best doctors and treatments for his disease is the Bachmann-Strauss Dystonia and Parkinson foundation. While Jacob spent many years recovering from his DBS and is now living the very normal life of teenage boy. About 3 years ago Jacob decided to create a fundraiser to combine his love for cars with a fundraiser event as a way to give back to the foundation that has not only helped Jacob but so many other patients with Dystonia and Parkinson’s. As a matter of fact, this past year, the foundation opened their first Dystonia Center of Excellence in New York, with more plans to help so many other patients like Jacob. Thanks, Louisville Cars and Coffee From the Louisville Cars & Coffee organization: This Saturday we will celebrate our first official Cars and Coffee for Dystonia for 2013! The Parklands of Floyd Fork, Beckley Creek Park Section was our destination arranged by Sue and Bill Hall. The Parklands is a systemic, world-class addition to Louisville’s parks system that, once completed, will include four major parks linked by a park drive, a firstrate urban trail system and a remarkable water trail, all tracing Floyds Fork, a classic Kentucky stream. By 2015, The Parklands will stretch from Shelbyville Road to Bardstown Road. The northern portion of Beckley Creek Park is now open to the public. You may enter the park from Shelbyville Road, across from Valhalla Golf Course. The southern portion of the park as well as the second park, Pope Lick, will open in the fall of 2013. We will break ground in the summer of 2013 on the two southern parks, on schedule to open in 2015. The Parklands will be unique in their design, harnessing the talents of national award-winning planners and landscape architects – Wallace Roberts & Todd in Philadelphia, PA and Bravura in Louisville, Kentucky. In every aspect, The Parklands will be a seamless blending of public space with the pristine beauty of nature, in a fusion of beneficial use and thoughtful preservation. The Parklands design has already been honored with three very prestigious awards: The 2010 “Place Maker” award by the Foundation for Landscape Studies, the “Honor Award in Analysis and Planning” by the American Society of Landscape Architects, and “The Merit Award” by the National Park Service 18 Our trip began in the windswept parking lot of Middletown’s Wal-Mart on Shelbyville Road just west of the Gene Snyder Freeway. From there, we proceeded to the Parklands of Floyds Fork, Beckley Creek Park Section over country roads to the “Egg Lawn”, crossing under I-64 to the “Oxbow”, then on to “William Miles Lakes” exit onto Shelbyville Road. In 1959, at the age of 69, Colonel Harland Sanders and his wife, Claudia, moved from Corbin in southeastern Kentucky to Shelbyville and established the Claudia Sanders Dinner House. The one hundred twenty five year old dwelling, Blackwood Hall, which is adjacent to the Dinner House, served as the Sanders’ residence and the base of operation for Kentucky Fried Chicken after their move here. Later, a larger building was added and became what we know today as the Dinner House. Their knowledge of Southern Recipes and their natural leaning toward the restaurant business soon brought about the creation of this, the Claudia Sanders Dinner House where an air of Southern Hospitality and cooking combined with old fashioned, family style service still remain. Guests are treated to a full country-style buffet of the greatest creation from Colonel Sanders’ secret recipes. The buffet includes fried chicken, roast beef, country vegetables and homemade cobblers. Yep. This must be the place. 28 The front of Claudia Sanders’ Dinner House is a bit imposing Michael Leggett was pretty well behaved on this trip. Here he is with Dad and the XJR 29 Lunch selections from a full menu can be a bit daunting … maybe I’ll just go with the chicken Hans Albertsen, Bev Huelsman, Greg Huelsman, and Tom Binkley contemplating the menu 30 What do you think about the chicken? Is the chicken any good? Chicken. Let‘s all have chicken 31 You’re having chicken, son … It looks like … chicken. 32 Annabelle Woody and Bill Long enjoy family style eating, and a great selection of side dishes Lots of vegetables and side dishes to pass and share 33 I think we enjoyed the chicken. Bill and Sue did a great job of arranging a fun trip. Job well done! 34 Col. What will we see? We visit one particular horse farm which was once owned by one of the founders of the breed. Typically see we will see a horse worked, walk through the barns, and a baby/mare if available (all subject to availability of trainers). Tours are conducted at an actual working horse farm, these are not typical attractions. Step back in time on a hands-on tour of a working Saddlebred Farm and step into the arena during a training session. Talk with a trainer. Watch these distinctly skilled and beautiful show horses as they’re worked. Walk through the barns. In the spring and summer, pet a new foal. And take lots of pictures – seeing this “jewel of a breed” up-close is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. What’s the Cost? There is no cost for a tour, although a donation is suggested. All monies are donated to an equine scholarship fund. Checks must be made out to the William Woods University. 36 Science Hill Inn -- Shelbyville, Kentucky Science Hill’s history as an outstanding preparatory school ran from 1825 until 1939. Anne and Roger Lawson operate the airport, and are the FBO (Fixed Base Operator) at EKX. 39 Swope’s Cars of Yesteryear Museum The Swope's Cars of Yesteryear Museum features vehicles ranging from the early 1900's to the 1960's in a variety of makes and models in both original condition and restored condition. After years of planning and nine months of construction, Swope’s Cars of Yesteryear opened in May 1999. The collection consists of sixty magnificent machines of the past, all museum quality. These are exciting automobiles that stir memories of long ago days when motoring was a fun-filled adventure. Our museum allows car fans and collectors to admire the progression of automobiles over time. The Swope collection includes antique cars like the 1914 Model T and the 1925 Pierce Arrow to classics like the 1969 Chevrolet Camaro and the 1956 Thunderbird. Not only do we have a great display of our collection for public viewing, but we also sell antique cars for the more passionate collectors. The Swope auto museum is a great place to bring the family and take a step back in time to remember the cars of yesteryear. Tony York’s on Main Glendale Kentucky’s fine dining destination! Can’t make up your mind on what to select? Well neither can we, so our menu changes daily. Our menu ranges from delicious gourmet salad to amazing surf and turf. Tony York’s on Main in historic Glendale uses only fresh ingredients and the menu changes daily based on what is in season and the chef’s inspiration. So a trip to Tony York's on Main -- which is both elegant and unpretentious -- is different every time you visit. Tony York’s serves up Kentucky-inspired dishes that are “kicked up a notch,” as Emeril Lagasee would say. Recent menus featured blackened shrimp with grits, ahi tuna, and prime rib with caramelized onions, meatloaf, chicken livers, fish and chips, southern fried chicken and the German favorite, Jaeger schnitzel. There are also vegetarian and even vegan meals available by special request. The selection may seem limited for those with an Appleby’s appetite, but there are plenty of choices for those that prefer more of a culinary experience. There is typically four to six hors d’oueuvers, two soups and two to three salads from which to choose for lunch and dinner, as well as several entrees. For dinner, the best bet is the five-course dinner, which includes an appetizer, soup, salad, entrée and dessert for just $40. 40 2013 Jaguar Clubs of North America Judging School & Concours Training Saturday May 11, 2013 By William A. "It will domino," said Pam Oakes, an ASE-certified technician in Fort Myers, Fla., and author of the book "Car Care for the Clueless." "If you didn't repair a $10 coolant leak, it could turn into a $1,000 head-gasket job." Here are a few maintenance and repair jobs you might want to try yourself — even if you're not handy — along with a few resources. To a degree, those fears are legitimate, because vehicles are more complicated than they used to be. But many repairs and maintenance tasks are easy enough to complete, even for those without many tools or skills. Replace engine air filter. The filter is easy to find under the hood and easy to replace, usually just requiring removal of a few screws from the filter box and swapping in a clean, $15 or $20 filter for an old, dirty one. That cost compares with possibly $50 or more if you have a repair shop You could save significant money if you did. And saving money is only one advantage; you could save time too. Think about the hassle involved with scheduling an auto-repair appointment, driving to the shop and dropping off the vehicle or waiting for the repair. "It takes a chunk of your day to deliver the vehicle to someone else," said Tracey Virtue, director of operations strategy for AutoMD.com, an auto-repair instruction site owned by U.S. Auto Parts Network. Some repairs could be done in a half-hour or less in your own driveway whenever it's convenient for you. do it, Virtue said. "That's going to keep the oxygen going into your engine cleaner and keeps the dust particles out," she said. "It just helps the engine run better and prevents wear and tear on different components." See your owner's manual for how frequently to change the air filter, typically every 15,000 miles. Wiper blades. Instructions for replacing blades are often on the package. "It's really easy and cheap to do it yourself," Virtue said. You might save about $10 each time. And keeping the blades clean will make them last longer, said Oakes, who suggests cleaning rubber blades with paper towels and a kitchen cleaner that has lemon in it. "There's a lot you can do that's easy," Virtue said. "And how-to guides are so much more available." That time and money saved might also help some car owners to stop ignoring maintenance or a repair, a habit that can lead to bigger Light bulbs. Headlights, brake lights, taillights and turn signals all have bulbs that might occasionally need to be replaced. They are generally 52 easy to access and require just turning a bulb with your hand to remove and replace it. Again, a shop will likely charge for time and mark up the price of the bulb. The expensive, high-intensity headlight lamps should be replaced by a professional, Oakes said. Changing oil. While this might seem like an obvious do-it-yourself task, many experts don't recommend it. The main argument against changing your own oil is you're not likely to save a lot of time and money because specialty oil-and-lube shops can offer cheap, quick oil changes. Virtue warned, however, that some shops will offer cheap oil changes to get you into the shop and then try to upsell you on an unrelated repair job. Fuses. If something electrical suddenly stops working on the interior of the car, such as the dome light or dashboard lights, there's a decent chance it's a blown fuse, which is easy to replace. In your car's fuse box is often a spare fuse, Virtue said. Replace fuses one at a time, by pulling one out and pushing in the spare fuse, to see if the problem is rectified. Savings come from skipping the diagnostic fee at a repair shop, which might run $50 or $100, and your cost is nothing but 10 or 15 minutes of troubleshooting fuses, Virtue said. However, Oakes' general advice is not to mess with anything related to electrical systems. Warranty. Doing simple maintenance and repairs yourself will not void your vehicle warranty, Virtue said. And if your car is more than a few years old, it's probably not under warranty anymore anyway. Parts and tools. It can pay to shop around for parts at retail stores and dealers, and, if you're not in a hurry, online. And don't invest in pricey tools you may not need. The simple repairs mentioned here only require common household tools you're likely to already have, such as a screwdriver, pliers and adjustable wrench. Headlight cleaning. Older cars can develop a haze over the headlights, which can be a safety hazard because it can reduce the driver's ability to see and make the driver's car more difficult to be seen by others. Do-it-yourself headlight restoration kits are relatively inexpensive and work well, Oakes said. That might cost about $15 or $20, compared with $50 or $75 at a shop. Instruction. Online sites and forums offer how-to videos and written instructional guides. It could also pay to buy the official repair manual for your vehicle, which will tell you what tools you need and provide instruction and troubleshooting. Top off fluids. Check levels for wiper fluid, engine coolant, brake fluid and antifreeze. Is the fluid up to the fill line on the reservoir? If not, add more. Or, find a shop that will top off those fluids for free, Oakes said. [email protected] Car repair online resources A sampling of online resources for ... Replace a battery. Even those with minimal tool skills should be able to remove an old battery and replace it with a new one, Virtue said. And you can clean the battery terminals that often build up a white coating of acid. Do-it-yourself car repair Use baking soda and water to make a paste. Clean terminals with the paste and an old toothbrush. That should save $30 over having a shop do the cleaning, said Oakes, adding you shouldn't wear jewelry and should consider wearing gloves while cleaning terminals. The F-type will be offered in three different versions: all with rear-wheel drive, all with supercharged engines, and all sporting an eight-speed automatic transmission. And all of them share the same mission: to make Jaguar once again a relevant contender in the world of performance sports cars. Initially, there will be three powertrains for the roadster (a coupe version and a manual transmission will follow soon): V-6: $69,895; the “entry-level” Ftype offers a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 that makes 340 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. Jaguar estimates it 2014 Jaguar F-type V8 S and V6 S roadsters will do 0–60 in 5.1 seconds and top out at 161 mph. A sport suspension, 18-inch wheels, and a regular rear differential are all standard, as are steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. A Meridian 380-watt audio system with 10 speakers is standard as well. V-6 S: $81,895; the V-6 S bumps the output of the supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 to 380 horsepower and 339 lb-ft of torque. Zero to 60 is achieved in 4.8 seconds, according to Jaguar, and top speed is limited at 171 mph. The V-6 S adds an active sports exhaust, adaptive sport suspension with 19inch wheels, launch control, and a limited-slip differential as standard. Remote keyless entry with push-button start and special interior lighting also are standard. V-8 S: $92,895; the top-level F-type supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 produces 495 horses and 460 lb-ft. This setup is good for 0–60 in 4.2 seconds and a top speed of 186 mph, by Jaguar’s estimates. Bigger brakes behind special 20-inch wheels as well as an electronic active differential and launch control are standard to improve performance. Dual-zone climate control, leather sport seats, and rear-parking sensors round out the standard creature comforts. As far as pricing goes, the F-type is slotting in at the top of the segment regardless of powertrain. A 2013 BMW Z4 iDrive35i starts at $56,045, while a Mercedes-Benz SLK350 starts at $56,305; the Z4 offers a 300-hp inline six while the SLK offers a 302-hp V-6. The F-type also is more expensive than a Porsche Boxster S, which starts at $63,050 and offers a 315-hp flat-six. Move up the food chain to the 911 Carrera, however, and the F-type starts to look competitive. While the 911 makes 350 horsepower from its flat-six, pricing starts at $85,250, making the F-type look like a bargain. Regardless, we’re still excited to have this latest addition to the sports-car segment. A replacement from Jaguar for the legendary E-type is long overdue, and we look forward to the opportunity to strap on our testing equipment to see how it stacks up in the real world against the competition. http://blog.caranddriver.com/jaguar-prices-2014-f-type-supercharged-v-6-model-starts-at-69895/ 54 Left Lane | Friday, March 1, 2013 Spied: Jaguar's upcoming 3-Series fighter By Drew Johnson Jaguar's BMW 3-Series-fighter has officially moved out of the rumor mill and into the real world. After a lengthy buildup, our spy photographers have sent us the first images proving Jaguar's compact sedan program is well underway Don't let this test mule's body work fool you – beneath that XF exterior resides a new compact sports sedan that will take on vehicles like the BMW 3-Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A4. A closer inspection reveals the donor XF's roof, doors and deck lid have been altered to fit the compact footprint of the smaller sedan, internally known as the X760. Although we can't comment of the car's styling at this point, Jaguar's recent F-Type sports car should be a good indication of what to expect from the company's 3-Series fighter. 55 The compact sedan, which could be branded as the XS, is expected to ride on a version of the same Premium Lightweight Architecture that underpins the Jaguar XJ. That means the XS should not only be among the lightest vehicles in its class, but also be available with rear- and all-wheel drive. As far as engines go, we hear the XS will arrive with a turbocharged fourcylinder as its base engine, with Jaguar's new supercharged V6 also on offer. A hotter XS-R model is likely, but it remains unknown which mill might power that car. Look for the Jaguar XS to hit the market sometime in 2015, possibly as a 2016 model. http://www.leftlanenews.com/jaguar-xs.html 56 Reuters | March 4, 2013 Jaguar Land Rover to lift investment at UK engine plant By Henry Foy; Writing by Mark Potter; Editing by David Cowell GENEVA (Reuters) - Luxury car maker Jaguar Land Rover plans to increase investment at its UK engine plant and double employment at the site to around 1,400, its chief executive said on Monday. Ralf Speth told a press conference ahead of the Geneva car show the firm planned to increase investment at the plant in central England to over 500 million pounds ($754 million) from a previous plan of around 350 million. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), owned by India's Tata Motors , has ridden a rise in demand for its luxury saloons and SUVs over the past two years, notably in China and other emerging markets, bucking the trend of plant shutdowns and falling production at many European automakers. The investment is part of a surge in capital spending in JLR's production facilities. In China, for example, the company and local partner Chery Automobile (CHERY.UL) are building a factory. Company sources also told Reuters on Saturday that JLR was investigating the potential of manufacturing cars in India. The Jaguar logo is pictured at a Jaguar-Land Rover showroom in Mumbai February 13, 2013. REUTERS/Vivek Prakash Despite its plans overseas, JLR has continually stressed its dedication to its plants in Britain, where it says it is the country's largest automotive investor in research and development. Over the past few weeks, the company has been teasing the new Range Rover Sport, which will debut at the New York auto show. But on Wednesday, Facebook community page VMax 200 gave us a sneak peek, publishing snagged a shot of the new Rover in an auto shop. What we garnered from the blurry teaser shot looks to be substantiated by the new picture. The front and rear end look much like the rounded Range Rover Evoque, as do its sloping rear window and black window pillars. Personally, we like the new shape. It looks like a brawnier Evoque with squared shoulders and tough haunches. As much as we like blocky designs—see the Cherokee Classic—we understand that moving a brick through air takes fuel. Automakers know if they want better fuel mileage, a cube on wheels isn't the way to do it. If the Range Rover Sport follows the pattern set by the 2014 Range Rover, it will have the option of a supercharged V6 or the 5.0-liter V8 that it carried in the previous model year. A supercharged V8 will go in the top model. We'll learn more before the New York auto show later this month. http://www.autoweek.com/article/20130313/carnews/130319928#ixzz2OeZztaa2 57 Wall Street Journal | March 12, 2013 Jaguar Land Rover Posts Slower Sales Growth By ANIRBAN CHOWDHURY MUMBAI--JaguarLand Rover PLC, the luxury-car maker owned by India's Tata Motors Ltd., 500570.BY -3.27% Tuesday posted a 3% increase in its February vehicle sales, which slowed sharply from recent months because of holidays in China. Jaguar Land Rover's sales had increased 32% in January. That came after a 30% jump in 2012 sales. The U.K.-based company posted global sales of 26,855 vehicles in the past month. Jaguar Land Rover, acquired from Ford Motor Co. F +0.15% in 2008, is Tata Motors' biggest money spinner. The unit has been riding on strong demand in emerging markets such as China and Brazil to prop up its parent's weak performance in India. Sales in China, one of its biggest markets, fell 22% as the country celebrated the spring festival in February, resulting in lower working days, Jaguar Land Rover said. Last year, the festival was in January. In India, automobile demand has been crimped by increasing fuel prices, high borrowing cost and a slowdown in the economy which together have dissuaded many from purchasing vehicles. Global sales of Jaguar sedans rose 27% to 4,595 vehicles but those of Land Rover sport-utility vehicles fell slightly to 22,260 units, the company said. In February, Tata Motors posted a 71% fall in its sales of cars and SUVs in India. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887323826704578356280881377930.html Wall Street Journal | March 4, 2013 Jaguar Mulls Manufacturing Cars in India By ANIRBAN CHOWDHURY MUMBAI -- Jaguar Land Rover, Tata Motors Ltd.'s British luxury car making unit, is considering manufacturing vehicles in India. JLR is looking at options to build its cars and expand its manufacturing footprint beyond the U.K., a person close to the development said Sunday, and producing cars in India would lower the price tag for JLR vehicles in the world's second-most populous country. "Like Brazil, India is one of the possibilities for Jaguar Land Rover to fully manufacture cars," the person, who didn't want to be named, told The Wall 58 Street Journal, in line with the company's plans to set up plants in emerging economies A manufacturing plant in India would be a leap for JLR over its German rivals -- Audi AG, Daimler AG, and BMW AG -- which only assemble their cars in India. Showroom attendants polish a vehicle at a Jaguar Land Rover showroom in Mumbai. Global auto makers have been expanding their manufacturing footprint in India to lower costs and produce cheaper vehicles for the large domestic market. However, the process is at a "very preliminary stage," the person said, and analysts were skeptical about the viability of a JLR manufacturing plant in India. However, analysts said Jaguar Land Rover's sales volume in India don't justify the cost of setting up a manufacturing facility in the country. JLR assembles two vehicles at its west India plant using kits, engines and gearboxes imported from the U.K. However, these locally assembled vehicles are still subjected to a duty, albeit lower than that for fully imported automobiles. "A manufacturing facility would entail an investment of about 25 billion rupees ($455 million), in which case, the company would need to sell about 12,000 vehicles to make a profit...JLR does much less," said Mahantesh Sabarad, an analyst with Fortune Equity Brokers (Pvt) Ltd. Building a car in India would help JLR save on government taxes and reduce labor costs. India recently raised the import duty on imported cars to 100% of its cost, from 75%. Cars made by companies such as JLR, which fully import engines and gearboxes, attract a 30% duty, while vehicles assembled from imported kits and fitted with locally made parts attract a 10% duty He added that unless JLR opens an engine manufacturing plant in India, it will continue to attract the tax that is imposed on imported engines. Jaguar Land Rover has three plants in the U.K. It is building a manufacturing plant in China with local car maker Chery Automobile Co., and plans to set up a plant in Brazil if it clears regulatory hurdles. JLR assembles the Jaguar XF sedan and the Land Rover Freelander sport utility vehicle at the same facility where parent Tata Motors builds cars and trucks, but imports fully built vehicles for the XK and XJ sedans, as well as the Evoque and Discovery SUVs. In 2008, Tata Motors purchased the Jaguar and Land Rover brand names for $2.3 billion from Ford Motor Co. The unit is the Indian company's biggest source of revenue and profit. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887324178904578339320515355876.html 59 Green Car Reports | March 12, 2013 Jaguar Joins BMW, Other Luxury Makes, In Adding Start-Stop for Fuel Saving By Antony Ingram 2013 Jaguar XJ It's taken a while for carmakers to begin fitting stop/start systems to U.S. vehicles, such systems' benefits not really advertised to consumers in a car's EPA numbers. The driver can also switch off the system using a dashboard button-these scenarios and more can be seen in the video above. In the real world though, many manufacturers say the systems can save you significant amounts of fuel--particularly if you regularly commute in heavy traffic. Jaguar's Stop/Start uses a "Tandem Solenoid Starter", allowing independent starter gear selection and engine starting. A more powerful and durable starter motor replaces the standard starter. Jaguar has joined other luxury carmakers in offering the system on a selection of its models. When pulling to a halt, the system cuts the engine to save fuel and reduce emissions, during what Jaguar terms "ECOStop". It then restarts as you lift your foot off the brake--so the engine is already running before you press the gas pedal. The benefits are fairly easy to understand-an engine that's off is an engine using no fuel and producing no emissions. And while Jaguar cabins are generally pretty quiet, it's even quieter with the engine off entirely. Until now, many carmakers have been reluctant to fit such systems, despite their benefits, as cars on the EPA test cycle spend too little time not moving for stop/start systems to take effect. Naturally, there may be situations where you don't want the system to function, so the system is designed to perform differently depending on the conditions. The system is available on all 2013 Jaguar XF and XJ, V-6 and V-8 sedans, and will be standard on the upcoming F-Type sports car. It isn't available on 2.0-liter XF models, nor the older XK Coupe and Convertible lines. If it's too hot (over 104 F) or too cold (below 32 F) outside requiring the air conditioning or heating inside, the system remains on. This also applies to ambient cabin temperature, or if the driver has set the heating and ventilation controls to a high setting. If the hood is open, the driver turns the steering wheel or has their belt unbuckled, the system will also deactivate. But will Jaguar buyers take to the system in a way their BMW-driving counterparts didn't?... http://www.greencarreports.com/news/1082842_jaguar-joins-bmw-other-luxury-makes-in-adding-start-stop-for-fuel-savings-video 60 NEW YORK DAILY NEWS | Monday, March 4, 2013, 3:21 PM 2013 Jaguar F-Type Roadster ready to stand up to Mercedes-Benz SLK series Jaguar is ready to be taken seriously again, at least that's what its 2013 F-Type Roadster suggests. Better looking than a Porsche Boxster and more athletic than the Mercedes-Benz SLK, this sports car is ready to compete in the convertible market. The 2013 Jaguar F-Type Roadster is ready to remind the public of Jaguar's racing history. When you think about Jaguar the odds are your thoughts will touch upon on every aspect of luxury automobiles save for high performance. Mainly because they have spent decades rolling out one posh sedan after another, with only the rare stab at something offering even the pretense of a car more potent than a "grand tourer," Jaguar developed an image problem for itself among sports car enthusiasts. The company's new F-Type Roadster is the latest, and most obvious attempt to remind the buying public of Jaguar's history of racing and production of fast automobiles. When you allow a half century to elapse between the E-Type and the next letter in the alphabet, the newest Jaguar has quite the tall order to accomplish. It is reported that the drop top will soon be that task with a hard topped version. The good news for Jaguar is that the Fpromising start. It's definitely a depending on your taste looks better than or Cayman, and athletic than SLK series cars intended to actual 1960's assisted in Type is off to a head turner, and in such things, the Porsche Boxster more lithe and the Mercedes-Benz the F-Type is tackle. The F-Type Roadster is more than just a looker. Inside, the car feels as much like a race car as its exterior looks. But looks aren't enough in this segment, the performance has to live up to the sheet metal. Jaguar is offering the F-Type with two supercharged engines. The base F-type will be offered with a V6 offering 340 BHP and 322 ft-lbs. of torque. The S model gets a tweak of the V6 to return 380 BHP and 339 ft-lbs. of torque. The top of the line will be the V8S shoehorning 495 BHP and 460 ft-lbs. of torque into the little cat. All versions are slated to feature an eight speed automatic transmission run through either paddle shifters or the more traditionally styled shift lever. A rumored manual transmission is also to be offered for the driving purists. All of the first F-Types will be rear wheel driven, with limited slip differentials and launch control to keep the car going straight if you mash the accelerator to the floor. The more powerful V8's differential control will be electronic. With any sports car, speed is only part of the equation, handling and braking are equally important to its ultimate composure when driven hard. To those ends, Jaguar is equipping the F-Type with the brakes and computer brains to help you keep the car where you want it to go. In addition to a normal mode that tames the cat, there is a "Dynamic" mode that increases the throttle response, reduces the power assist to the steering, cuts down the nannying of the stability control, and makes more efficient upshifts and throttle blipping downshifts. During the golden age of European convertible cars in the postwar period, most of them were British. Hopefully, with the F-Type, Jaguar is joining the silver age of today's Germanic convertibles, and proves itself worthy of its rich heritage. http://www.nydailynews.com/autos/looker-jaguar-f-type-roadster-ready-compete-article-1.1278951#ixzz2NrOyvVP3 61 Car & Driver | March 20, 2013 Plus-Size Performance Pussycat Jaguar Previews 550-hp 2014 XJR at 2013 New York Auto Show By Alexander Stoklosa The XJR returns! Jaguar has announced it will release an XJR sedan for 2014, and that the sporty model will debut at the 2013 New York auto show. Recently, Jaguar gave the XJ a mild refresh for 2013, but it hasn’t sold an R version of its biggest sedan since 2009, the year before the new-look, current-generation model bowed. Unlike Jaguar’s other R models, the 510-hp XFR and the XKR, the XJR will be powered by a 550-hp, supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 engine shared with the higher-output XFR-S and XKR-S. It also will receive the requisite host of chassis and suspension enhancements to improve handling and braking. As is clear from the single XJR photo Jaguar released, the car also will get subtle cosmetic upgrades to visually announce its R-itude. The XJR likely will slot into the XJ lineup above the 510-hp XJ Supersport and XJL Supersport, which until now has been the spiciest XJ on offer. Look for more details—like whether the XJR will be offered only in short-wheelbase, non-L form—to follow the XJR’s debut in New York. A part of us really hopes Jaguar decides to take the XJR one step further and roll out an even more-powerful (and French Racing Blue) XJR-S. http://blog.caranddriver.com/plus-size-performance-pussycat-jaguar-previews-550-hp-2014-xjr-2013-new-york-autoshow/?src=spr_FBPAGE&spr_id=1458_7371773 62 Sports Car Market | February 2013 Jaguar Auction Results SCM February 2013 SOLD AT $74,104. Price paid was a touch high compared with the R.M. Auctions: October 31, 2012, London, UK typical market price, but not out of line considering the originality, single-family ownership and recent work. #161-1936 JAGUAR SS 100 2½-LITER roadster. Very high-level body-off restoration presents extremely well. Chrome, paintwork, interior, engine bay all present as new. The matching-numbers mechanicals have been completely overhauled. Fiberglass hard top included. Cond: 1-. Arcturial Motorcars: November 11, 2012, Paris, FRA SOLD AT $120,985. Sold strong for a 120, but the new owner should have no Milan the following year. Collector Car Productions: October 26–28, 2012, Toronto, CAN #104-1965 JAGUAR XKE coupe. S/N 1E31363. Eng. # 7E48488. Mist Gray/black leather. Odo: 62,797 km. Very well preserved original car, in the same family since new. Repainted once, now showing age. Retains original Parisian registration and lube decals. Leather intact but looking a little fragile. Recent mechanical attention. Cond: 4+. 63 #SP46-1956 JAGUAR XK 140 coupe. S/N 814595. White/black leather. Odo: 36,657 miles. Little info offered, but supposedly a complete engine rebuild just completed, new brakes and over $30k spent. Door fit and sitting high at rear are cause for concern. Very decent respray. Newer black leather immaculate, as is wood. Fresh chrome and fully detailed engine, compartment and trunk. Fresh tires, repainted wire wheels. Flat black underside with no detailing. An attentiongetter one way or another. Cond: 2. #561-1990 JAGUAR XJS convertible. S/N SAJJNADW3DB173593. Red/black cloth/magnolia leather. RHD. Odo: 23,355 miles. A previous multiple showwinner in near-Concours condition. Low mileage, leather is hardly worn. Appears to have no rot anywhere. Quite amazing. Cond: 1-. SOLD AT $32,822. We don’t usually include these, as most are rusty old sheds, but this was an exception. You could buy 10 old smokers for this, but you couldn’t make a rough one nice for the price—and it’s still far less money than basically the same mechanicals in an SIII E-type. Curiously alluring. SOLD AT $71,739. Some thought this looked smart, others felt it looked like a “girlie” car or pimpmobile. Losing the wide whitewalls and going with repainted silver wheels should solve any negative perceptions. Big bucks paid for a coupe, so seller did well. eBay Condition inferred from seller’s descriptions; cars were not physically examined by the author. All quoted material taken from the eBay listings. Green/green Webasto/beige leather. RHD. Odo: 1,011 miles. Straight body with new hood. Nice paint with a few imperfections, good chrome. Porsche seats, rear bench removed, new leather. Avon ZZ tires a sign of enthusiastic ownership, but they’re a tad small. Was an auto, now a manual with overdrive, and Coopercraft brakes. Original airbox missing, replaced by three K&N filters. Concours-quality restoration completed in 2000. All mechanicals restored and overhauled, new wooden body framing installed, new Connolly leather upholstery fitted. The electrical wiring also addressed. Car has been properly and regularly maintained and exercised, and remains in virtual Concours-quality condition.” 11 bids. Sf 161. Cond: 2+. SOLD AT $38,292. Story was that this one was modified to carry the owner’s dog, but the mutt died and this improved car was too painful a reminder. After I slagged off 2+2s last issue, this one was almost desirable, with sensible mods and a good color disguising the roof and sunroof. Only the too-small tires detracted, but I’d say this was a good car fairly bought. SOLD AT $84,500. Said to be one of 376 3.5-liter Mk IVs built for export. This one went for about $20k more than the SCM Pocket Price Guide listing. It appeared in remarkable condition, and somebody just had to have it. Well sold. 64 Sports Car Market | March 2013 Jaguar Auction Results SCM March 2013 apart gives a unique driving experience, and that’s what we’re paying for here, even if it’s about to be torn apart. This time around, well sold and fairly bought. SOLD AT $402,177. Sold on the money for a decent 3½. 2½s are always a little cheaper, and the price here suggests it still had its original engine, which is rare.
