Programme - Electronic Summer
Programme Welcome to Electronic Summer 2015! Wow! The fourth Electronic Summer is here! To be honest we never thought we would organize the festival more than once but we actually really enjoy putting this together. We are still at Brewhouse and the core concept remains the same. However, we want to make something new and unique every time. Last year we had, among other things, a big Depeche Mode convention. This year we’ve decided to focus more on the live bookings. We are proud to have booked VNV Nation for two unique concerts. One will focus more on alternative songs and the other one on hits. To this we have added more bands than all previous years. In total we will have 17 bands performing and artists are coming from countries such as Germany, Canada, Greece, UK, Ireland and of course Sweden. But, as always, no festival without great people! We have had visitors coming from not only Sweden, but also from countries like UK, Germany, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, Netherlands, USA, Belgium, Norway, Denmark, Finland and even Russia and Iran. Therefore this programme is in English as we do not expect everyone to learn Swedish :) This year we have teamed up with Jennifer Last and Simon Helm from the web magazine Cold War Night Life who helped us out with interviews which you can read in this booklet. If you want to read more, just visit their homepage either now or when you are back home in your sofa. Another purpose of making this “old school booklet” is of course to give you a physical memory of the festival. We now wish you a great festival! Electronic Greetings, Henrik Wittgren and Sebastian Hess Before Electronic Summer we asked visitors to our Facebook event page why they admire VNV Nation and why they look forward to their two concerts. I look forward to the two gigs to get two different setlists. It is awesome to get to hear so many songs in one weekend. I’ve been listening to them for 16 years, I own everything they have released except Burning Empires. Their logo is my only tattoo. What makes it even better is that the first gig is on my own birthday! / Jonas Bergkvist I’m looking forward to everything, except Små grodorna. / Jessica Pekka Andersson The only band that you can sing Små grodorna with! / Anders Levén Because of Ronan shares words of love to all of us in the audience and never makes fun of anyone. He also likes those who have had a bit too much to drink (to enjoy and have fun). / Pär Groh VNV Nation is for me spiritual music which affects you through the heart and stays there. / Chatrine Annelund Bertelsen VNV Nation creates a feeling of involvement. Their music is the soundtrack to any moment. / Pauline Pousár If you find your quote here, please visit the Info Desk and collect a small gift by showing your ID. Thank you for your contributions! Friday 19.00 & Saturday 00.00 VNV Nation Karin Park has won over audiences from the back-woods of Dalarna to London’s hipster districts with raw, emotional songs and dancefloor-friendly electronics. She co-wrote Norway’s popular Eurovision entry in 2013 and lures the lenses when working as a model, but it’s for her confident, compelling stage shows with brother David that she’s best known. We tracked Karin down on tour for a “virtual fika”. You play live a lot abroad. Do these shows differ from when you play on Swedish soil? All countries differ slightly depending on the culture. But it is also true that it is slightly the same type of people who come to my concerts, so sometimes one becomes amazed at how alike people are, wherever one is coming from. Music brings together people who think alike, in some way. How does the future look? Fortunately, I have no idea. One can of course die tomorrow. But I will build a good studio in the autumn, I have been thinking, so it will be good to nest there a while before we tour again. It will be in part of the USA, too, it seems. It will be exciting. Where do your strongest influences come from? It changes from record to record, because I listen to so many different ones. Everything from Whitney Houston to Miles Davis to Scott Walker. But The Cure, Depeche Mode and Fad Gadget have probably had a big impact on my sound these last years. And so has Kelis. Who do you look forward to see on stage at this year’s Electronic Summer? I hope that I have the time to see Me The Tiger. I have seen them before and it was great. Friday 23.00 Karin Park COMPETITION Hint: Read this programme carefully! 1. What animal does Reagan in Iris want to see in Canada? 2. Which complete Depeche Mode album did Marsheaux recently cover? 3. Which drink is preferred when listening to Sturm Café? 4. Friday 21.00 Virtual Voices Friday 20.00 Peter Sjöholm Saturday 18.30 Hiltipop Greece’s most popular export might be Marsheaux, the duo who recently covered Depeche Mode’s A Broken Frame in its entirety. The project was ambitious, but the Athenian act has proven its retro-futurist credentials in support slots for OMD and Client and through successive albums of exciting original songs and popular covers. This is their first appearance at Electronic Summer, so we caught them for a chat before their flight. Saturday 21.00 Marsheaux What do you expect from the audience at Electronic Summer 2015? We love to watch the people from the stage, dancing and having fun with our songs. It is a great reward for our work. We hope the audience at Electronic Summer 2015 will be like that. People in Sweden seem to love our music, and we think they will be a great audience. We are also very happy because many friends around Europe will come to see us. What can the audience expect from you? We’ll play many songs from our version of A Broken Frame and a “Best Of” from our albums. We believe that people will have a good time and we hope to please them all. Are there any bands in this year’s line-up that you look forward to seeing live? Yes, we want to see Karin Park again, Darrin Huss and, of course, VNV Nation. Their gig in Athens some years ago was fantastic. Have either of you ever visited Sweden before? No, this is the first time for both of us and we are very excited about it. That is why we plan to stay a few days more for vacation. We asked them a few questions to figure out who they are. You are a new band. Can you tell us about yourselves and your sound? We started this spring due to various reasons. One of them is that we found ourselves in the same room with a big number of instruments and felt like it would be wasteful not doing anything about it. The second reason is that we had a musical vision that we wanted to achieve. If we are successful or not is not for us to judge, but we are happy so far. We make EBM with strong influences of Industrial. What experiences have you got from previous gigs? This will be our debut as Nattskiftet, but we have all been performing on stage before in various constellations. It has most often been successful. Actually they were all part of the classic Swedish compilation Circuit One, which was released 20 years ago. We thought, “Why not celebrate this great CD with booking some of the bands?” Yeah, we know it is kind of geeky, but that’s us... Some classic memories for the ES crew? -Oh yes! 1. Avantgarde brings some nostalgia for the ES crew: Actually Henrik bought the above mentioned CD when it was released and played it at second-hand record shop Wonderland Records, where he was working Saturdays at the time. As you might know, this second hand record shop was managed by Sebastian (other ES crew member). Sebastian also got hooked, and the two Avantgarde songs on the album, Pop It and Why Me got very good rotation in the shop. 2. Xhile was the first band Henrik ever saw live. Maybe Tony will bring his red leather jacket again to bring feelings back? 3. Destin Fragile was the first band Henrik ever arranged! In this section we check what’s up with some of the acts from our previous festivals. Let’s get started! ...Parralox ...Emmon We are playing at Midsumma/ Winterdaze festival in Melbourne in July, Berlin in October, and London & Spain in January 2016 to perform with Marsheaux. Another Holiday EP is coming at the end of the year, and a new album in November. We launch our new single “Somebody II” in New York this August! Hope you have a great time at ES :) Electronically Yours, John Emmon is on parental leave at the moment. See you on the 26th of September at Klubb Död in Stockholm! Emmon will soon feature on Depeche Mode tribute band The New Dress recordings and Jimmy has been mixing tracks for the Person:A up-coming EP. Take care and see you soon! Best regards, Emmon and crew. S SCENE RPSBORG UE: SA NEW VEN Catching up with... ...Spark! We are back! /Best regards, Mattias Zeissow ...Marilyn and The Rouge After playing ES 2012 Marilyn and The Rouge was put to rest for a couple of years. In the spring of 2014 Marilyn made some new songs again and tried them out live a couple of times. She found that the songs worked well and that she had been missing M&TR, so with the release of the new single Eden in the spring of 2015 and The Rouge “coming out” as a feminist super hero the project is now up and running again. Catching up with... ...Iris It’s something like semi-retirement but in a good way. We work on things when we want to, we don’t have any tight deadlines. After working together so many years, we know how to make a track we both like, and that’s a great feeling. We may not make any. We may one, two, or more. It’s chill. Playing a festival in Calgary this coming weekend, so I’ll have a chance to get into the woods. I want to drive out to Banff National Park and see a bear. If I come back we’ll write more songs. We’ve been working on some things, new tracks, and just seeing where it leads. It’s really cool that Iris is always just a few clicks away. All the best, Iris Friday 00.30 Project Pitchfork With sixteen studio albums to their credit, Project Pitchfork are seasoned veterans of the dark electro scene. The German band first hit the scene in 1990, marking their territory with innovative, hard electronics, and last year’s Blood album found them refining the stuff nightmares are made of. We asked Peter Spilles to come into the light ahead of their show. What do you expect from the audience at Electronic Summer? I expect them to have a great time and to have a wonderful party with us. What can the audience expect from you? We will play a lot of Project Pitchfork songs. We’re going to start a journey through our musical universe of more than PITCHFORK 20 years creating electro-industrial music. If you would do a cover, like right here, right now, which song would you choose - and why? I wouldn’t do any cover song right now; but, if you’d force me to, I’d choose “Born to Lie” by Mesh. If you were to do a collaboration on your next album, which would be your dream artist to collaborate with? I fulfilled my dream collaborations with my project, IMATEM. Just wait for the next IMATEM album! From where do you get your strongest influences? Everyday life, politics and all the other shit that’s going on. If Project Pitchfork were on a dating site, what would the profile say? Twenty-four years young; will show you universes you never dared to dream of. We said hello to Darrin from Psyche and asked a few questions prior to their visit to Sweden. What is in the pipeline for Psyche? I have recently collaborated with Luminance (Belgian artist) and we have a 7” single with two songs coming out, limited and exclusive to ArtofFact Records. Also, I plan a 12” EP of my collaboration with Red Industrie from Mexico, and hopefully our new album tentatively entitled “Light Before Day” will come out by end of October. The Psyche tribute album, Unforgotten Rhymes, attracted a lot of artists. Was it surprising how much respect there is for Psyche’s material? It was actually a surprise – especially some of the song choices, such as “Equinoxe” and “Murder In Your Love,” done by female vocalists of Future Trail and Arcana Oscura, respectively. Friday 21.30 Psyche Since their founding in 2012, Me the Tiger have made waves with their intelligent and energetic synthpop. The trio from Falun come to Electronic Summer with a new EP on release and new tracks ready for a September album launch. We asked the band about their plans. What can the audience expect from your concert at Electronic Summer 2015? Energy, melancholy and strong choruses. What do you expect from the audience? Curiosity, presence and love. Which bands in this year’s line-up do you look forward to seeing live? There are a lot of interesting names, but Karin Park is brilliant in all ways possible. And she comes from Dalarna as well, which is obviously a nice bonus. We only have positive experiences in playing live in Gbg. This will be our 7th show in the city, but the first one since 2009, so it’ll be great to see some old acquaintances and friends. What do you expect from the audience? We expect a pretty mixed crowd. Probably a lot of known faces from way back, but also some new, curious music souls. When is it most suitable to listen your music? Maybe on the couch with a cognac after a hard work week. Or in the car when you’re crossing the Öresund Bridge, heading towards new adventures. Or at a disco, for that matter. Saturday 19.00 Sturm Café Saturday 22.30 Solar Fake Berlin-based act, Solar Fake, have three albums behind them, crossing genres while maintaining an electronic style and dark, romantic feel. The project of Sven Friedrich (Zeraphine, Dreadful Shadows), Solar Fake has supported VNV Nation and Covenant at European shows. We asked Friedrich to let us in on his thoughts about coming to Electronic Summer for the first time. What can the audience expect from you? We play a mix of all three albums. We’re just two guys on stage loving music. It’s always a very special party atmosphere when we play. We’ll try to transfer it to the audience as well as we can. Are there any bands in this year’s line-up that you look forward to seeing live? I will definitely try to see as many bands as I can. I’m always interested in discovering new acts, so I’m especially interested in the bands I don’t know. Of course, I’m looking forward to seeing Project Pitchfork and VNV Nation - both of them are always a great experience when playing live. If my flight arrives early enough, I hope to see Psyche, as well. Have either of you ever visited Sweden before? Not yet, unfortunately. My parents have friends near Norrtälje, and they used to visit them quite often, but I never had the time to go there. So, I’m really looking forward to go to Sweden for the first time in my life.
