Staff Farewell At the end of Term 2 we said farewell to Ms Lynnette Jones (R.6) who formally resigned from her teaching position on our staff. She finished teaching at the end of Term 2, and on Friday July 8th Te Rapa Primary School formally acknowledged her at both our full school assembly and also at our end of term staff morning tea. We thanked Ms Jones for her many years of service to our school, and for her contributions to extracurricular programmes like “Kids for Kids”. We wished her all the very best as she looks to pursue a variety of career options beyond teaching. New Staff Beginning Term 3 we have Mrs Vrena Joyce and Mrs Anne Bell teaching in Room 6 for Terms 3 & 4. They are both experienced classroom teachers who were already on our part-time teaching staff. They have also been permanent full-time classroom teachers on our staff in the past, and they have extensive junior school experience at this Year level. We are delighted to welcome back Mrs Erin Westgate who has been appointed to teach in Room 1 with Mrs Poland. Mrs Westgate will teach the Friday programme in Terms 3 & 4. She is an experienced classroom teacher who was previously on our full-time staff prior to leaving on maternity leave to start a family. Long Term Plan – Term 3 Committed – TO KEEPING OUR SCHOOL FAMILIES WELL INFORMED This will come home with your child this week. We pride ourselves in the level of communication we have with parents / carers, and this plan outlines key events for you which are scheduled for Term 3. It is part of our school’s commitment to keeping school families well informed. Key Dates 2016 Term 3 Mon. 25th July to Fri. 23rd Sept. Labour Day Term 4 Mon. 10th Oct. to Tues. 20th Dec. Oct. 24th Mon. Measles & Flu Update Sick Students – Should not be at School Te Rapa Primary is a large institution with approx. 545+ students and 55 staff and we ask that parents keep your son / daughter at home if they are not well. If your child attends school when they are sick there is a very strong likelihood that they will spread their illness. We simply don’t want that to happen. If your child is going to be away sick please email [email protected] or contact the school office on ph. 8492232 after 8am and before 9.15am on the day. Please ensure you contact us to let us know. Education Outside the Classroom 2016 Senior “SNOW” Camp – Turangi / Taupo Yr 7 & 8 : Rms 17, 18, 19, 20 & 21 NEXT WEEK : 1 – 5 August All formal classes for all Yr 7 & 8 students from our 5 x senior rooms at Te Rapa Primary are off-site next week (1 – 5 August inclusive). There will be NO classes here at school. We are excited about the Year 7 & 8 EOTC programme being offered in Turangi / Taupo. The organisation by Te Rapa staff, particularly Team Leader Mrs Marian Conder R.19, has been detailed. All we need is favourable weather and some more snow. I would like to publicly thank all staff and camp parents who are giving their time to prepare / supervise students at what will be another successful EOTC adventure experience for senior Yr 7 & 8 students at Te Rapa Primary. Off-site programmes like this are not possible without our parents / carers and also our staff. I know the students involved are grateful too. Parents / carers are asked to please have your child ready for camp next week, and please have their camp fees paid up before they depart on Monday morning (1 st August). Performing Arts - School Programme Our Head of Arts – Mrs Abby Ritete has co-ordinated a further 3 x more shows for our students as part of our 2016 Performing Arts series of specialist performers. These 3 x scheduled shows are included in the $10 per student ‘one off’ payment that students paid at the start of the school year. Our first show for this term is in week 3. Te Rapa Primary School PTA Our school’s PTA are a very important group of people who our school values immensely. They meet monthly and they are constantly doing things to “better” our school. They regularly send home flyers / notices to update you (our parents / carers) of what’s happening at your child’s school too. Their efforts do not go unnoticed by students, staff or the Board of Trustees. They are currently looking for new parents to join them, and to show your support of your child’s school I would urge you to come along to their next meeting to find out a little more about our PTA. They are a great committee of mums and dads who next meet on Wednesday 3rd August 7.30pm in the staff lounge. Please ‘buddy up” with another parent and come along together to this meeting, and become a “friend of our school”. PTA Quiz Night - Friday 19th August HAVE YOU ORGANISED YOUR TEAM YET ? Please look to make up your own team (family and friends) or join another team for this 2016 school PTA organised event. It is extremely important that our parent / carers and friends of our school are seen by the PTA to be supporting these types of annual school / community events. If you would like to enter a team, join a team or know a little more about the event please email [email protected] 2, Te Rapa Primary School in the 2016 EPro8 Tech FINAL Congratulations 3rd PLACE Last night our very successful Year 8 Team (Ashlee, Ella, Hannah, Penny and reserve Rueben) competed in the Waikato Regional FINAL of the EPro8 Technology School’s Challenge and came 3rd. This is a fantastic achievement. 12 x schools reached the final after many others competed in the quarter / semi-final stages held late last term. Our success in the final was commendable, with Marian Catholic School 1 st and Thames South School 2nd. Other schools in the final included Aberdeen, Cambridge Primary, Gordonton, Hukanui, Maeroa Int, Matamata Int, Morrinsville Int, Te Kowhai and Te Puru. Well done to Hamish Marsh R.18 who prepared our team, and thanks to the staff and parents who went along to support our team too. They had lots of support. Well done Te Rapa. Maths Information Evening ….. for Yr 5 & 6 Syndicate Parents / Caregivers This maths information evening is being held tonight - Thursday 28th July starting at 7pm in the staff lounge. It is being hosted and presented by Te Rapa Primary School’s Yr 5 & 6 Syndicate Teachers for the parents and carers of the students they teach. Thanks for coming along. Maori & Pasifika Education Our Te Rapa staff have got our 2016 KapaHaka programme operating really, really well. Our specialist tutors Penny & Troy are actively involved each Friday too, along with parent Mark Morunga. These tutors compliment what our staff are doing, and together they are excellent. They give students a really good experience. We have approx. 250 of our children involved in KapaHaka, many of whom are non-Maori. Maori Kings Koroneihana Celebrations Te Rapa will send a selection of “elite” students to attend the Maori King’s Koroneihana celebrations in Ngaruawahia. This is a good way to expose our students to our wider local community, and it also gives these students an opportunity to visit Turangawaewae (NZ’s premier Marae). Mrs Ritete (Head of Senior School) and Mrs Shadbolt (Head of Maori) will coach the children and explain clearly what is required of them, so they do a fantastic job representing our school. They will also attend with the children, along with our parent team. Te Wiki o te Reo Maori North and South Island Art & Writing Competition Our Te Rapa Primary School students are currently preparing / submitting their art / writing entries for this special competition. We have had significant success in 2013, 2014 and again in 2015. International Students Visiting Te Rapa Primary School Term 3 - On Monday 8th August we are hosting a group of students and their teacher from Japan. We enjoy visits like this each year from international students. They are based here in Hamilton, but will be with our Year 5 & 6 Syndicate team. There is always lots of sharing, and our Te Rapa Primary students benefit enormously through hosting international visitors like this in their classrooms. Term 4 - We have another group of 10+ Japanese students arriving at Te Rapa Primary School in Term 4 (16 th October to 2nd November 2016). They will be hosted by our Senior Syndicate team with each of our 5 x Year 7 & 8 Senior Syndicate classrooms hosting 2 x international students each for the 2 x weeks. Travelling with them will be an English-Japanese speaking coordinator and also their own Japanese teacher. ICAS Australasian Schools Assessment Tests - 2016 These specialist 2016 assessment tests have almost concluded for our most able Te Rapa Primary students. As Principal I administer these tests, and Head of Senior School – Mrs Abby Ritete liaises with the University of New South Wales. We’ve had a large number of high achievers involved, and once results are returned we will acknowledge successful students at a full school assembly later this term. Cups & Trophies Awarded for Netball & Hockey Please return these …. Students with cups and trophies that were awarded at the 2015 Netball and / or Hockey prize giving are asked to give their cup / trophy a good clean and return it to Mrs Lawrence in the office, or to Netball Convenor – Miss Curtis R.14 or Hockey Convenor – Mr Foster R.11. LOST PROPERTY - Have you clearly named your child’s shoes, sweatshirts, hoodies etc. Named gear is easy to return to the right owner. Citizenship with Excellence REMINDER – This term our focus for the next 5 x weeks is “Perseverance”. Parents / carers are asked to regularly remind your children to set goals around “perseverance” and encourage them to “persevere” in everything they do. Please help us with this focus by promoting it at home too. Incentive Awards …. acknowledging our Sponsors Reminder - Any lucky draw recipients must contact their sponsor(s) to say ‘thank you’. This is crucial to keeping the sponsorship going. New Entrant Enrolments 2016 and 2017 Do we know about your 4 year child and when they are due to start school ? If you have a pre-school child at home (2 – 4 year olds) and you intend enrolling them at Te Rapa Primary this year, next year or beyond then you must contact the school now to pre-enrol. Please contact office staff on ph. 8492232 or email [email protected]. Please inform any “in-zone” neighbours for us too please …. because having a pre-enrolment database for the 2016 – 2019 period is extremely important. Technicraft – Compulsory FEES There are still some year 7 & 8 students yet to pay their 2016 compulsory Technicraft Fee. We’ve already paid the host school (Hamilton Junior High School) for each student so they can go ahead and pre-purchase all of the materials / ingredients for our students. Parents are now asked to please help us by having your child’s Tech Fees settled so we can budget our books for the year. 3, Dental Therapists at Te Rapa Primary School The Health Waikato Dental Team and their mobile clinic arrive on Monday 1st August (next week). The dental therapists will screen all Te Rapa Primary students, and then appointments will be made for the Crawshaw Dental Clinic for students requiring treatment. The mobile clinic will be positioned at the rear of the school beside Rooms 11, 12 & 13. They will be with us for 3 weeks departing on Friday 19th August. 2016 Leaver’s ‘Commemorative’ Hoodies - for Year 8 Students Every year we look for special ways to recognise our Yr.8 leaving students. Traditional events include an end of year formal dinner & dance, presentations of leaving certificates, off-site activities and other acknowledgements. In addition to these planned events later this year we also make a “Leaver’s Hoodie” available for sale to recognise Yr.8 senior students. This leaver’s hoodie is subsidised by our school. It acknowledges each Yr.8 student who has completed their last year at Te Rapa. It is similar to a Yr.13 (7 th form) leaver’s jersey offered at secondary school. Parents are asked to support this not-for-profit initiative. A notice came home this week with each Yr.8 student, and we have kept the price similar to last year. We are grateful to our Apparel Co-ordinator Nicky Davis who will again manage this initiative. School Cross Country Friday 26th August (Afternoon Event) Health & PE Focus This is a great afternoon involving our whole school. Parents, grandparents and friends of our school are invited to come along to cheer students. Running the annual cross country is fun for many, “ho-hum” for others and a genuine challenge for a few. Students will be practicing regularly and will have run their course many times before the event. Health & Safety Our H&S Co-ordinator on staff is Mrs Jude Saes and she recently attended a 2 x day H&S Representatives Training Course. She found the course very worthwhile, and acknowledged that they covered lots of ground. She has reported back to the staff, and also to our Board of Trustees, and confirmed that the main purpose of the H&S Act is to provide a balanced framework to secure the health and safety of workers and workplaces. Following her course we have reviewed processes, some of which have now been tightened up. We have also started an informative H&S display on the wall in the staff lounge, and this is being constantly updated. I am pleased to report that Te Rapa Primary School is well advanced with our H&S policies, procedures and practices, and we are committed to making our school a safe place. For Your Information …. Term 1 Term 2 Term 3 Term 4 School Year Dates for 2017 Tuesday 7th February - Thursday 13th April Monday 1st May - Friday 7th July Monday 24th July - Friday 29th September Monday 16th October - Wednesday 20th December (96 half-days) (98 half-days) (100 half-days) (94 half-days) School must be open for 388 half days in 2017. Hamilton West School Sports Exchange Wed. 10th August Our 8 x Te Rapa Primary teams selected to represent us in the winter sports exchange vs Hamilton West School have been training in readiness for this annual fixture. Te Rapa won the shield in 2014, and we defended it again last year winning 7 – 1 over the 8 x matches played. We will host Hamilton West teams here because we have the facilities for netball, rugby, soccer and hockey. They will bring their 4 x Year 5 – 6 teams and their 4 x Year 7 – 8 teams. We look forward to defending the Shield against Hamilton West School again in 2016. Property, Garden & Grounds …….. Tasks Completed in the School Holidays Our school was a particularly busy place over the recent holiday period. Our caretaking and grounds staff were also industrious focussing on school related projects while the school was closed. The community work team were onsite and emptied our storage shed of 90% of furniture and miscellaneous items and moved and stacked this into the new container. The new container is now full up with surplus “school” property. The store shed can now be resorted, so we can easily access archives and other frequently used items of school furniture / property. The rear container now needs the gardens reinstated / improved around it, with some new rear gates installed too and some paint touch ups. Some roofing repairs around the school were completed where we had identified some leaks. Some internal ceiling tiles now need to be replaced too. Both our senior and middle playgrounds were topped up with new cushion-fill, and raked level in readiness for the children’s return this term. When the weather improves later this year we will repaint selected painted surfaces in our playgrounds. Mr Wayne Lindsay (Caretaker / Property) reports that our door hardware upgrade is now 90% completed, with the other 10% being the pool sheds / pool office doors, and some other minor remedial and finishing work elsewhere. Door lock direction stickers have now been applied to the inside of all doors. Some new court fencing at the park end, along with some fencing repairs is being arranged, and we expect to host the contractor very soon. The old sand in our pool filter has been replaced with new sand over the holidays, and planning / scheduling is currently being arranged to repaint our pool before the new summer season begins. There have been some downpipe alterations where blockages needed to be cleared. We are looking to implement a variety of new measures to stop balls (or similar items) going down downpipes and then impeding water flow. Clearing the downpipes and avoiding future blockage will prevent any overflows into the roof structures. We are currently working with our school property consultants and also the Min. of Education to review our lights in the 4 x original stage 2 classrooms. All 15 x original stage 1 classrooms have already enjoyed a lighting upgrade. Replacing these stage 2 lights will avoid potential burn outs should older lighting fail. Gardening / grounds staff are diligently working to keep the grounds well maintained at what is a difficult time of the year. We are currently working to replace a number of plants and trees around the school, and this includes making improvements to our front entrance gardens too. To do this staff have been promulgating / growing seedlings to plant out around the school. New bark for our feature gardens is also being planned. Our new spray pump unit will be used to keep our paving areas moss free. Thank you for your continued support of Te Rapa Primary …. Waikato’s Top School 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015 & 2016 …… a full primary school where “everyone knows your child’s name” V W Franklin (Principal) and Staff Sport Result Player of the Day Fairplay Netball Hockey Citizenship with Excellence Whole School Skill Focus at Te Rapa School 2016 Principal: Vaughan Franklin Values Coordinator: Christine Troon PURPOSE: To highlight the importance, school-wide, of being a good citizen and the skills required in order to be a good citizen. PERSEVERANCE: Our focus from July 25th to August 26th Perseverance is sticking to something, staying committed, no matter how long it takes or what obstacles appear to stop you. When we persevere, people can depend on us to finish what we start. Perseverance builds strength of character. EDUCATIONAL GOALS CHILDREN LEARN: the meaning of perseverance the benefits of persevering and the consequences of not that sometimes we might need to give up on something and that can be OK strategies for dealing with obstacles, setbacks, and adjusting to change that passion and desire keep people motivated even when things get tough FOR PARENTS: Have a discussion about perseverance at home, school and in areas of relationships/friendships Talk about when it is most difficult to persevere There may be times when we need to give up on something and that can be OK too Catch your child persevering and praise them when they make the extra effort to keep going with something even when it gets difficult. Make sure your child knows he or she has just done something good. Expressing your approval is a powerful way to reinforce behaviours. Remember, your child is watching what you do. Be sure to model the kinds of behaviours you want your child to adopt. In Week 9 of Term 2, Dave, the Ambulance Officer and the Ambulance came to visit the Junior Syndicate classes. Dave showed us a stethoscope, a walking Ambulance backpack and a medicine breathing mask (Nebuliser). We got to feel air from the tank and it was cold and windy. He showed us what our heart beat is like and he moved his hand and said, “Baa Boom!, Baa Boom!, Baa Boom!” Dave read a book called “Trouble in the Backyard” and in the story there were two boys named Sam and Andy. Andy climbed a tree and fell out of it and broke his arm. Sam called 111 straight away and Rachel, the Ambulance Officer came and put Andy on the bed in the Ambulance and took him to the hospital. We had a look inside and outside the Ambulance. The Ambulance is white, yellow, green (mainly) with a bit of red and black. Seoyeon sat on the chair in it, like he was going to the hospital. Room 5 enjoyed climbing in Dave’s Ambulance because it looked great and it was loud and amazing especially when we heard the Sirens go off when we stood at the front of it! Sasha, Kaea, Jaakobi, Lucas and Katie (Room 5) In Week 10 of Term 2, Steve Shadbolt, a Corrections Detector Dog Supervisor, and his Detector dog Ciggy came to school to talk to the Junior Syndicate about their job. Ciggy is a 4 year old Springer Spaniel and he is brown and white. Ciggy is short for cigarettes because that is what he searches for. In the Multi-Purpose Room, Steve hid a cell phone and some tobacco. First Ciggy found the tobacco and then soon after he found the cell phone but Steve had to keep on saying “Search Ciggy!” because he kept on stopping. After Ciggy finds something Steve would chuck Ciggy’s toy. When Ciggy got his toy he would run around with his toy in his mouth. “I enjoyed watching Ciggy play with his little doggy toy because he was running crazy to get his little toy!” Mr Shadbolt told Katie and Kassidy to stand up and he checked if they had anything metal on them using a metal detector. Katie didn’t but Kassidy did have metal buttons on her jean jacket and the metal detector button turned green! Nate, Katie & Lucah (Room 5) Mighty Maui Puppet Show Co Theatre Physical Speech Snatcher A girl is preparing her speech for school. An esteemed royal speech writer is struggling to save her Queen and their Kingdom, beset with recession, with a speech. Their two worlds collide and conflict in this imaginative, funny and instructive show. Speech Snatcher uses comedy, slap-stick, balance acrobatics, soundscape, colourful characterisations and story-telling to bring you this entertaining and informative show. Mighty Maui is an up-beat puppet musical about the extraordinary deeds of our own super hero - Māui Tikitiki-ā-Taranga, including his fishing up of land, slowing down the sun, shape-shifting and bringing fire to humankind. Audience children play the parts of Maui’s dolphins, Maui’s buff brothers, fish, forest birds, and a giant eel called Tunaroa. They puppeteer, dance and sing along to original waiata while immersed in non-stop interactive action and drama. Tricks of the Trade Two actors are devising a show in a school hall when an audience arrives unexpectedly! Their play is not ready to be shown in public but instead they decide to share their play-making process with the audience. Friday 2nd September Tuesday 9th August NZ Playhouse #Fairest of Them All Wednesday 14th September The Magic Mirror’s cracking up. Now Snow White’s a princess everybody knows she’s ‘the fairest of them all’ and he’s out of a job. After some bitter reflection he decides it’s time for Princess White to be sent back to the forest so he can once again be the mirror-to-the-stars. With the help of a gruff goat-deprived internet troll, the Mirror launches a very 21st century poisoned ‘Apple’ attack to hijack her computer and cause social media mayhem. When everyone turns against her, including her beloved prince, she turns to the only friends she has left, the seven dwarfs. Will they be willing to help her one more time and what shocking secret are they hiding? Sir Peter Blake Award Oliver We are very proud of the ‘Young Leaders’ we have at Te Rapa. Watching them grow and develop as they enter the senior school and take on rolls as peer mediators, road patrollers, librarians and then developing into house leaders and student councillors. Following on from Gabrielle who was our 2015 recipient of the Sir Peter Blake Award we are very proud to announce that Oliver is the winner of this award for 2016. Oliver is hardworking and conscientious. He is an outstanding all-rounder: academically, creatively and physically thus making him an excellent role model to his peers. Oliver is a quiet achiever and does not draw attention to his successes; he is thoughtful, considerate and humble when interacting with others. Oliver is highly self-motivated. As a leader Oliver is quiet yet determined. He supports his peers to contribute so that they feel valued. Oliver thrives on responsibility and carries out these roles of responsibility to a high standard. He often recognises the need and offers to help without prompting. Te Rapa School Whanau Hui Nau mai, Haere mai, tena koutou katoa, There will be Whanau Hui on Wednesday 10th August at 7.00pm in the School Staffroom. The purpose of the meeting is to review what we have done this year, discuss and plan any events and also any further matters the Whanau parent body may have. We look forward in seeing many of you there. The Hui/Meeting agenda is as follows: Karakia (Opening Prayer) Mihi (Introductions) Whakawhiriwhiri (Discussions) Karakia (Closing Prayer) Kai (Refreshments) Kia ora koutou, (Christine Shadbolt, Jane Franklin, Tony Su’a, Colleen O’Connor, Karen Wymer & Candy MacWilliam) On Wednesday the 13th of July the Student Councillors were very lucky because they got the opportunity to work with representatives from the Sir Peter Blake Trust in the areas of leadership skills and values. They told us that everyone is different and good at something that other people might not be very good at. The two girls Brogan Limax and Erana Severne were very nice and showed us some very good leadership skills, how to be confident, the power of friendship and obviously shared information about Sir Peter Blake, the famous yachtsman. Afterwards the Councillors also got a picture with Erana and Brogan while holding up a worksheet on how to help people and make sure they have a nice day. #Believeyoucan Written by Adam Wednesday Lunches in Term 3 Raising money for Year 5 & 6 Camp for 2017 Hell Pizza Wednesday 27th July Wednesday 10th August Wednesday 24th August Wednesday 7th September Wednesday 21st September Fish n Chips Wednesday 3rd August Wednesday 31st August Sushi Wednesday 17th August Wednesday 14th September Order forms will come home every Tuesday and orders need to come directly to the MPR Kitchen between 8:15-9am Our Year 5 & 6 Team is planning our camp for February 2017. This camp is very early in Term 1 so we are fundraising this year. We have secured a spot for our students in Papamoa and Mount Manganui. Thank you for supporting Kowloon Takeaways Host Families Needed for Japanese Students In October 2016, Junior High School students from Japan are being welcomed to Te Rapa School of Hamilton. This will be a wonderful opportunity for both our students and theirs to build international relationships and cultural understanding. Currently we are particularly interested in families who can host students from Te Rapa School. If you have family or friends who live near these schools, please let them know about this opportunity. Families in other areas are still welcome to apply. We are looking for kind families with children living at home who would enjoy the experience of hosting a student for the 17 nights they are in New Zealand. They will be here from 16th of October until 1st of November, 2016. Students require their own room and three meals a day. Usually host families help each other to transport children to and from school each day, as students are not permitted to travel on their own. Families receive $560 as a thank you for their contribution. The Japanese students will be 14-15 years old, both boys and girls. Japanese children enjoy relating to younger children. If your children are very young you are still able to apply to participate. As the students are here to learn English we do not place them in homes with other Japanese nationals. We also place students in homes which have a child of the same gender. Families may only host one Japanese student. Hosting can be a very enjoyable experience for all the family. As well as building international friendships, participation in hosting helps to build relationships between families in our local community. Often families team up for activities like sightseeing or a bbq, which helps families with a common interest in hosting get to know each other. Support is provided for families; this includes 24 hour emergency coverage. Translation services are also available. Interested families should send back the initial interest Email to Finedays Internatioal (NZ). Then one of the staff will contact you shortly.
