Enrolments - Terms 1 & 2 2015
The Board of Trustees invites applications from parents interested in enrolling their child(ren) at Te Rapa Primary School for Terms 1 & 2 next
year. Te Rapa has an enrolment scheme and home zone to prevent overcrowding. The BOT has determined there is likely to be 20 out-ofzone places at the new entrant (5 year olds) level. This is for children starting school for the first time and who will be turning 5 years old
between 1st December 2014 and 3rd July 2015. There may be places at other levels. The actual number of out of zone places will be
determined by the number of in-zone enrolments we receive. Applications for a 2015 “out of zone” place for either Term 1 or 2 must be
received by the school before 3.30pm Friday 7th November 2014 and forms are available at the school office. All applicants will then be
contacted in writing regarding the outcome of the ballot.

TE RAPA PRIMARY SCHOOL - Office Secretary : Full-time Position
We seek an enthusiastic person to join the office administration team in our caring community school. This is a fixed
term position for 2015 commencing Thursday 5 th February and is for school days only. It would suit a person with
initiative who enjoys new challenges and is able to work positively with people both young & old. PR experience is not
essential but a willingness to present a positive professional front while under pressure is important. We’re after a
proven team player who is loyal and also a competent self-manager. A willingness to maintain our current high

World Teacher’s Day
Wednesday - 29th October
I would hope that our Te Rapa students all made a small fuss of their teachers yesterday to acknowledge World Teacher’s Day. A kind word
of ‘genuine thanks’ for the extra effort teachers go to in ‘making a difference’ for every child was all that was needed. I personally signalled my
appreciation to all teachers earlier this week because they, along with our support staff too, contribute enormously to making Te Rapa Primary
the popular and sort after school we are. It is the people at Te Rapa who make the difference. Our staff do deserve an extra big ‘thank you”.
Swimming Pool 2014 - 2015
Our new Caretaker – Mr Wayne Lindsay has done really well to start readying our pool and the aquatic centre for the upcoming season.
Starting the pool up for the new summer is all new for him, but he has things well in-hand for the end of November. We are delighted to
confirm that Mr Cyril Gudgeon returns again this summer as our Pool Manager, and I have had my first meeting with him for the summer. He
has confirmed that the long range weather forecast indicates that it will be too cold to run his afterschool “swimming lessons” until the end of
November or even early December. Public swimming traditionally starts the first weekend of December eg. Sat 6 th & Sun. 7th Dec. too. This all
aligns well with our expectations as a school. We are currently undertaking a review of our solar heating system, and if necessary any repairs /
improvements will be completed over the next few weeks. The date we are aiming at (pool opening) is Monday 24th November (Wk 7 Term
4). Once the weather warms after this date classes will consider their swimming programmes for the end of term too with the senior syndicate
likely to start first with juniors not using the pool until the weather really has warmed up in early December. Syndicate Team Leaders will
consult their teams and then alert parents / carers via. notice home of what’s scheduled and when. Mr Matt Foster R.17 (Swimming
Convenor) will also work with Team Leaders and when appropriate a formal timetable will be published for late Term 4 to ensure all 21 x
classes in our school get time in the pool. Water Safety and Water Confidence are particularly important for us as a school, and we place a
huge emphasis on ‘teaching & learning” swimming and safety around water, with the Xmas summer holidays fast approaching and many of
our students likely to spend time near the water.

With the change of temperature in the air it's almost that time where we can get ready for the summer swimming season.
I can confirm for those interested that the pool will be ready to be opened to the public for the first weekend in
December. For those interested in swim lessons, you can email me at [email protected] to register your
preliminary interest where I can reply back to all of your enquiries. As the pool is strictly weather dependant, confirmation
of start dates for Learn To Swim (LTS) are yet to be confirmed. In the meantime be safe, prepared and water wise and
let's look forward to a safe swimming summer.

We have been informed that there may have been some burglaries in the wider Pukete neighbourhood and in light of this we have looked to
be more security aware as a school. Please make sure you review your locks and latches at home too.

Literacy Focus Book Week : 3rd to 7th November
Raising the profile of reading with students and families is our real goal, and I am pleased to report that our book week and the numerous
activities we will hold across the school will be a huge “hit” with the students. Thanks must go to the literacy / library team for their planning
and organisation, in particular Asst. Principal – Mrs Robyn Pilcher and Librarian – Mrs Alison Baucke. It will be pleasing to see lots of fun
things happening in our school library and also around the subject of “reading”. I invite parents, grandparents and friends of the school to
support book week and the scheduled events.
Student’s Annual Art Competition
We would like an art entry for this event from every student. Entries close end of November. Winners get their work framed professionally
“free of charge” and also have the honour of having their work hanging in the administration building for two years for all to see. After which
they get it back to take home. Remember those winners from 2012 can pick their pictures up from 2pm December 18 th and take them home.
Student Leadership at Te Rapa Primary School
Is you son / daughter a ‘future leader’ ?
Are they ready for 2015 ?
As Principal I expect all student leaders / seniors to lead from the front and set an example to others. I make no apologies for placing high
expectations on our senior students and those ready for leadership at other levels. I also expect big things from our younger students too.
They must “buy into” the role of responsibility if they choose to accept a leadership role / position. It is not appropriate for Te Rapa’s future
leaders to act or behave in an inappropriate way either in school or in the wider community. They must be on their best behaviour consistently,
and make us (school and family) proud of them. It is important that our future leaders, along with our most mature students, demonstrate and
show us that they are ready to step up in 2015. Staff are looking now to see which students are worthy of leadership roles for next year.
Performing Arts – Specialist Performances for Students 2014
$8 per student ‘one off’ payment
This year we have hosted close to 10 x shows in our school so students who paid $8 at the start of 2014 have enjoyed a fantastic series of
specialist performers. Our Head of Arts – Marian Conder R.20 has done a fantastic job in coordinating this focus. I am sure parents and
carers are appreciative of the “value for money” their child has received this year for the $8pp.
Performing Arts 2015
Next year Mrs Abby Ritete R.15 will lead our Performing Arts area having recently been appointed to the Head of Arts role. She will organise
our performing arts show involving students “on stage” at Clarence Street Theatre. The theme of the show is yet to be finalised, but will be
shared with students and staff once final details are confirmed. Parent assistance will be welcomed, and Mrs Ritete and her team will share
more later this term or early 2015 so school families are well aware of what’s planned.

REMINDER
Parents of Year 8 Students
Our Year 8 pupils and their parents are reminded that our most mature students must still work hard (and smart) to finish this year strongly.
The local high schools are in frequent communication with us, and regularly ask us for updates on their new students. They’re eager to know
how these children are doing and have asked teaching staff, as well as leadership personnel to provide written details on each individual
student to help them with placements for 2015. Students can help themselves by finishing their 2014 year really, really well. Maintaining high
standards of academic performance, attitude and behaviour, as well giving extra attention to leadership and serving others are important focus
areas. This information along with a copy of their end of year report will be shared with their 2015 high school principal and teachers.
Air Conditioners for MPR
2 x big units approved for payment by the BOT were installed recently in readiness for summer. This facility can get excessively warm when
we have 570 students indoors for a full school assembly. We know the units will not solve the humidity etc alone, but they will certainly help
make conditions much more pleasant for students, staff and visitors when we are all in there together.
S.N.U.P - Schools Network Upgrade Project
The SNUP contractors (ConnecTec – Rotorua) hope to commence the project to upgrade our internal school network system either late 2014
& early 2015. We are hopeful that it will be carried out over the Xmas school holidays. We will also move to a wireless system, and they are
likely to drive new fibre-optic cable under-ground to all of the key points around our school rather than use the covered walkway space. This is
our preferred option, and will then allow easy access for more cabling in the future should we need it.

Xmas Holidays – Contractors On-site at Te Rapa Primary School
New carpet, lino and autex pin-board will be installed in 5 x more classrooms over the upcoming summer holidays, and new carpet in 2 x
Pods. New lino will also go down in the MPR kitchen and toilet areas. This follows the work completed in 10 x rooms & 4 x pods last summer.

Positive Young Star Award
Congratulations to Maddison from Room 13 for being awarded
Hamilton’s Positive Young Star Award for October 2014. Positive Young Star recipients are positive role models in their
school who show the values of respect, integrity and resilience. Maddison is in year 6 and was nominated by her teacher,
Ms Penny Jackson. Ms Jackson says Maddison is a kind and respectful student who genuinely cares for others. She supports
children in need in the class and encourages others to do their
best both in the classroom and in the playground. “Maddison
was chosen as class leader last term as she is a great all rounder who gives everything a go; she really is a delight to have in
the class,” said Ms Jackson.
Maddison plays netball, being chosen for the Waikato
Representative Team, water polo and dances. She loves netball
as she enjoys playing in a team and being able to hang out with
her team-mates. “Being part of the Waikato Team was really
cool as we went to tournaments and I met lots of new people”
said Maddison.
On Wednesday the 29th of October two teams
of Year 5 and 6 and two teams of Year 7 and 8
students from Te Rapa took part in The
Amazing Race held at the Hamilton Gardens.
The day began with Cat and Jesse, who
featured in the TV programme The Amazing
Race NZ vs. Australia, speaking about their
experience in their Amazing Race and gave
encouraging advice to all the young competitors. Then the race began! All four teams were
off and racing around the many gardens with
their parent helpers in tow. The Year 5 and 6’s
were given where their pit stops were, while
the Year 7 and 8’s had clues which they had to
decipher first. All teams had to complete a
series of pit stops which included things from
Treasure hunts, Quizzes, Obstacle courses to
Physical challenges. At each pit stop they were
timed (time limit of 10 minutes) and then
awarded points for how well the pit stop was
completed. They were also given points for
group cooperation and team work. Although no
teams made a placing they all competed with a
positive and enthusiastic attitude. Well done to
all teams, you represented Te Rapa proudly.

Rylea-May, (Room 16)
Rylea-May travelled to Brisbane during the
September school holidays and competed at
the Australian Majors - Cheer & Dance
Competition with 4 teams from her All Star
Fame Cheerleading squad.
They competed against 4 other teams, one
team being a level 5 team and were placed
first overall and first in Grand Champs which
means being the best in your division.
Well done Rylea-May, what a fantastic
achievement!
A note to parents/caregivers of our Junior Syndicate. The Athletic Sessions with
Tony from Project Energize have been changed from the advertised date in the
term plan. The new date is Thursday 20th November.

During Book Week we will celebrate and focus on books. We have lots of fun
and exciting activities planned.


can choose a book character, a TV personality or someone they admire.



fair in the library.

Scholastic Book Fair
All welcome, perfect for Christmas shopping. Cash, cheques and
eftpos accepted. All students have the opportunity to visit the
book fair during class time and to fill in a wish list to bring home.
All sales go towards free books for our library. Opening hours—
Monday and Tuesday 8.30-3.30, Wednesday to 5.30 and Thursday to
lunchtime. Friday closed.

Waikato U13 Basketball Reps
In the October school holidays Lataina (Rm19) had the opportunity to represent Waikato at the 2014
U13 National Basketball Championships held in Dunedin.
The tournament ran from the 8th -11th Oct. with teams coming from all over the nation to show case
their skills and talent.
The 1st two days were pool plays, with Waikato girls versing - Wellington, Hibiscus Coast, Porirua and
Rotorua Maroon. Wining all pool games comfortably took our girls through to the Quarter Finals.
Quarter finals Waikato vs Taranaki. This game was very intense both physically and mentally. The
game went into over time as the full time score was 53-53, so a 5min over time was held. By this time
all supporters from both teams were up cheering and chanting as every goal scored a loud cheer was
raised. Both teams were goal for goal with no indication of any team giving up. With only a few
seconds left on the board, one of the Waikato girls put up a fabulous 3 point shot to win the game for
us!! SO INTENSE!!
Semi-finals saw us verse North Harbour - last years champions! They sure brought their “A” game and
came to play. Our girls played their little hearts out but unfortunately were not able to keep their lead
as North Harbour were just to good for us and took the game.
With this loss it took us into Finals for 3rd/4th place, versing Rotorua Gold. Hoping for a 3rd placing but
not able to hold our ground, we had to settle for 4th place.
Overall such an awesome experience for our girls. So much talent throughout the country. We were very fortunate to have 2 of
our girls make the tournament team. Playing 7 games over 4 days, was amazing!! Placing 4 th though out New Zealand Outstanding!!
Congratulations to Ben, Room 21 who
competed in the NZ Sailing Nationals on
the weekend of 18th & 19th October.
He sailed as a pair with his cousin in the
Phase 2 Grade on Lake Rotorua. They
competed in 7 races on Saturday and 5
races on Sunday doing 1-2 laps each
race. Each lap took about 20 minutes
and had four markers which the competitors had to race around. Ben and his
cousin came a very impressive 1st
place! This was a fantastic achievement
for Ben as he’s only been sailing for 3
weeks prior to this competition and was
sailing in an open event against people

Project 1
Here we are already into the last term of the school year. Towards the middle of
last term a group of eager helpers were formed to help take care of the native
garden and fence line. This group of eager year 3/4 call themselves The Eco
Warriors. We meet at the bush garden at lunch time and pick up rubbish, and
plant new plants. They also rake the paths and write in their garden diary. The
students are a wonderful enthusiastic group of helpers.
Project 2
The veggie patch is all alive with spring/summer veg, we had our first pick of
herbs last week. Runner beans are on the climb and the strawberries are starting
to get colour. The students are planting pumpkin this week. The bees are happy
with our planting of lavender and daisies.

As the weather warms for Term 4, our students will continue to receive the chilled milk each Tuesday mid-morning. Te
Rapa School has about 80% of our students participating. If your child no longer wants to be involved in the program,
please let their teacher know. Likewise, if they previously did not want to participate but now would like to be included
please let us know. Milk is packed with goodness for growing children and other essential nutrients, including protein for
muscle growth and vitamins like riboflavin that release the energy from food. The New Zealand Dietary Guidelines
recommend school children consume at least two to three servings every day of milk or dairy. The goodness of milk helps
the development of strong bones, assists in weight management and it can give you something to smile about because milk
helps people to grow and maintain healthy teeth.

2014-2015 Waikato Representative Basketball Trials - Trials will be split over two days on Saturday November 1 and Sunday 2 November.
Cambridge High School, Cambridge, run on both Saturday and Sunday, trials are for boys and girls. 11.00-12.00pm under 13, 12.00-1.30pm
under 15, 1.30-3.00pm under 17, 3.00-4.30pm under 19, 4.30-5.30pm under 23. Age group guide, ages are as at 31 December 2015. Trial Fee
Information. It will cost $5 to trial for a Waikato Representative Team. This will enable athletes to trial on both days, if they wish. There will be
no reduction to the trial fee if an athlete is able to only trial on one day. However, there is a family discount (three or more children from one

Totara Springs Summer Camp - Every school holidays, we run a five day long, OSCAR-funded Kids Camp for school
year 5-8's (approx 9-12 years old) and a Junior Kids Camp for school year 2-4's (approx 6-8 years old) which is a shorter camp (two nights / three days) to help introduce kids to camping. We also run a Teen’s camp for school years 9-13
(approx 14-18 years old). This is a chance for kids to get away and have some amazing experiences, including: Hydroslide, rock climbing, kayaking, archery, go karting and many other activities.
