Dear parents,
This week fortune was brought to HSL with the traditional
lion dance. Wonderful to see children of all ages enjoy
the spectacle. Also impressive was the number of parents
and grandparents joining us for this special Chinese
tradition at HSL.
In this newsletter an important announcement regarding
the upcoming parent teacher meetings. The submission
slip has been attached to the email. With the slip you can
indicate your preferred meeting schedule.
Another important document is the holiday schedule for
next school year and the year after. As you know we try
to synchronize this schedule to the other international
schools, where most of the siblings are enrolled, as much
as we can. Further in this newsletter also more information
about our decision to start the school year on 19 August
this summer.
The number of students applying for our groups 1 is
currently so high, that the school board decided to
create an extra group 1 (group 1d) per 11 March 2013.
We are very content to have attracted Mieke Verhaegh
as the teacher for this newly created group 1d. Mieke is
an experience lower grades teacher who recently

moved to Singapore. She will start at HSL on 1 March 2013, so she can get acquainted
with the different groups 1 and our Jip & Janneke groups to meet with the children. She
will also use this time to organize her classroom and prepare for the start of group 1d.
Mieke will introduce herself to you in the next Newsletter.
Last but not least, we are sending you our next edition of our educational magazine. This
time the magazine covers 'ICT’, opening the doors to our 'ICT kitchen', as well as providing
tips about ICT use at home. We hope to support you in using your home computers, iPads,
etc. for your child's learning.
On behalf of the HSL team we wish you a great weekend.
This week was the last week for Marjolein, our group red coordinator and teacher, due to
her planned maternity leave. Last Thursday was her last day. The children said goodbye to
her, and made blue and pink hearts for her. Marjolein will now prepare for the arrival of
her baby together with her family. In a few weeks we'll see her and the new baby back
again, healthy and well.
We had a week without theme this week. Next week we'll be embarking on a new theme,
which will be: "Plants and flowers".
On 6 – 7 – 8 March the IPC summer school for the region South East Asia will be held in our
school. Below is a list of all HSL participants and the teachers who will be covering for
them.

On Tuesday 5 March and Thursday 7 March the second round of parent teacher meetings
will take place. In this meeting the first Cito test results will be discussed for our primary
students.
PLEASE NOTE: parents of new students who recently had a starters meeting no parent
teacher meeting will be planned. Should you like to have a follow up to this meeting
please contact the group teacher directly.
On the submission slip you may indicate your preference for a meeting in school hours or
in the evening, as well as for which day. We will try to accommodate your preference as
much as possible. For logistic reasons, however, it may be impossible to fully
accommodate your preferences.
Note: for all students in our remedial teaching program the parent teacher meetings will
be held jointly with the evaluation and finalization of the individual action plans. This
means the remedial teachers will automatically attend the parent teacher meetings.
Should you wish for our Special Educational Needs Coordinator, Fabienne d’Anjou, to
attend your meeting, please indicate so on the submission slip. Should there be many
requests we will plan the meetings on other dates, after school hours.
You may also indicate your interest in meeting one of the specialty teachers (English,
Sports, Music). Please do so at the bottom of the submission slip. Again, in case of many
requests, we will plan some meetings on other days, after school hours. The specialty
teacher in question will contact you about this meeting directly.
Please return the attached submission slip no later than Tuesday 26 February to your group
teacher. You will receive notification on Friday 1 March of the day/time you will be
expected, together with a printed copy of your child's test results. Should you not submit
any preferences, we will schedule the meeting at liberty.
Note: The below teachers are in an IPC training on Thursday 7 March which means they
will only be available to plan parent teacher meetings in the evening:

There will be work documents available for all our groups 3 thru 8 parents for your perusal.
We advise you to arrive at your scheduled meeting in good time, so you have the
opportunity to take a look at your child’s work beforehand.
We would like to emphasize the need to submit separate slips to the appropriate group
teacher for each individual child.

There will be no supervision for any children remaining at school after school hours. Should
your child or children remain at school during your Parent Teacher Meetings, they will be
under your responsibility and supervision. We would like to suggest not bringing your
children to school during the Parent Teacher Meetings.
The school year 2013 – 2014 starts 1 week later than originally planned, namely on
Monday 19 August 2013.
Moving the start date up by one week gives us an extra week at the end of the school
year, which means the last day will be Thursday 26 June 2014. We need the extra week at
this end of the school year to be able to follow the advised CITO schedule and to be able
to conduct and process these tests with the necessary peace and quiet. Coincidentally
most other international schools also do not start their school year until 19 August.

On Thursday 28 February 2013 from 7.30 – 8.30 pm we are having a group 7 parent's
information night at HSL. This evening more information will be provided about the Loola
Camp, set to take place his year from 7 thru 10 May 2013.
During this evening you will be informed about the program, the location, the facilities and
the preparations you can take at home. Naturally there will be ample opportunity to
asking questions, too.
The information night will take place in group 7b's classroom.
Your child needs their own passport with a validity of at least six months counted from the
date of arrival in Indonesia. The Singaporean pass (dependent or student pass) should not
expire, either.
Please complete and submit the attached form with the group teacher as soon as
possible.

In the months of March, April and May the reading motivation activity 'the Dutch
Children's jury 2013' is the main theme in groups 3, 4 and 5.
This activity is meant for children from six to twelve years old. Children can vote on their
favorite book published in 2012.
Various book stores made a selection of the books published and came up with a shortlist
of 25 titles per category.
The two categories are: six to nine years old and ten to twelve years old. Within these
categories there are several types of books. This will stimulate children to read different
types of books and consider their opinion about them. Besides regular story books there
are also poetry and picture books on the list.
At HSL we chose to especially stimulate our groups 3 thru 6 to partake in this activity.
Several titles from the list are available in school, but perhaps your child has a book from
the list at home, too.
The teachers will support the children in this period in their book reading and in forming
their opinion and voting on the website. This is done by digital classes, for instance,
especially covering forming an opinion.

We would also like to point out the two following apps to you:

'Maan roos vis Letterlegger' app
For children who are learning to read. The ' maan roos vis Letterlegger app' is
especially designed for children with an interest in letters and for early readers. The
app is based on the teaching method 'Veilig leren lezen (maan roos vis)', a method
over 75% of the children learn to read with.
Learning to read starts with 'maan roos vis':
Maan roos vis are the first words children learn to read. We developed the 'maan
roos vis app' together with group 3 students and - teachers. This is why the app is
exactly in synch with what early readers are learning in school. But it is also a fun
and educational app for toddlers with an interest in letters.
How does it work?
The 'maan roos vis Letterlegger' is very one-dimensional, so that children can
immediately and independently get to work. The app will show several letters on the
screen. You have to form the correct word with these letters. The colorful graphics
and the five different levels continue to entice the children. The levels grow along

the growing letter knowledge of the children, so that the app will continue to
challenge them.
•
'Theaterlezen app' (theater reading app):
What is 'theater reading?
Theater reading is much like reading a play. Children read a text together in a small
group. As in a play, each child has its own character. Each of the four children
reads the lines of one of the characters. By taking turns in reading, a coherent story
develops. Of course all children will (quietly) read along with the others, or they
won't know when they're up next!
After having practiced the text a few times, there is a 'performance' for the rest of
the class. This makes theater reading a combination of technical reading, reading
comprehension and a little bit of acting.
Theater reading is a very motivational reading form. In general, but especially for
weaker readers. Children can empathize with their character, which makes them
very committed. The rehearsals, the interactions, reading out loud and the feelings
of accomplishment while reading is very motivational, it stimulates smoother reading
and provides reading enjoyment.
•
The 'Waddengoud app':
The 'Waddengoud theater reading app' is based on the theater reading book
'Waddengoud' and can be downloaded on the iPad. With this app you can read
alone but still in a team! There are many options. You can choose to read out loud,
but you can also just read along. You can read your own part and listen to the
others read aloud. Or you could 'just' read everything, without saying anything out
loud. Both with the app and the book you can create your own theater show at
home, at school or wherever you like. You will see how great and fun it is! Check the
App Store for 'Waddengoud' for more information!

Per 15 April 2013 HSL has a job opening at
our pre-school Jip & Janneke for a
part time pre-school teacher m/f
Due to the relocation of one of our J&J teachers HSL is looking for a part time pre-school
teacher for four days a week, from 15 April through 30 June 2013. Working hours are from 8
am -2 pm. The HSL school holidays are also holidays for our staff, with the exception of the
first and last week of the summer break and the in-service training days.
Requirements:
• Full qualifications as pedagogic employee, either for pre-school teaching or having
primary school teaching credentials for the Netherlands or Flanders.
• Experience in a pre-school environment is recommendable.
• Excellent communication skills in English.
Candidates are expected to:
• Be full of initiative and looking forward to the challenge of working in a
Dutch/English language environment;
• Have a warm personality with a passion for working with young children.
We also expect our candidates to be team players, have a positive and stress proof
character and be of a flexible, optimistic disposition with excellent social and
communication skills and a sense of humor.

In the course of a relaxing and inspiring afternoon the children will become acquainted
with the various different aspects of yoga, where we will awaken all senses with:
• breathing exercises
• hatha yoga
• music & dance
• games and ‘art & craft’
• meditation & visualization
• massage
Teaching children to relax and concentrate. Yoga can help in case of tommy- or head
aches and sleeping issues. They will leave their worries behind and make contact with their
own strengths and self-confidence.
It is promising to be a fun afternoon and the children will also bring home a self-made
souvenir.
