The Miss America Pageant was established in 1921 and hosted the winners of local newspaper beauty contests in the "Inter-City Beauty" Contest; a turnout of over one hundred thousand people was achieved and sixteen-year-old Margaret Gorman of Washington, D.C. won both the popularity and beauty contests and was awarded $100. Similar national pageants were also established in Britain, Germany and other countries in the 1920s. The first modern beauty pageant was held during the Eglinton Tournament of 1859 held by Archibald Montgomerie, 13th Earl of Eglinton, a reenactment of a medieval joust that was held in Scotland. The other Big Four international beauty pageants are Miss World, Miss Universe (begun in 1952), Miss International (1960) and Miss Earth (2001). They are the most coveted beauty titles when it comes to international pageant competitions and are considered to be as such since they are the four largest and most famous female beauty pageants across the globe. Because of their prominence which already became an institution in beauty pageant industry, many fans always anticipate these beauty pageants each year. Critics of beauty contests argue that such contests reinforce the idea that girls and women should be valued primarily for their physical appearance, and that this puts tremendous pressure on women to conform to conventional beauty standards by spending time and money on fashion, cosmetics, hair styling and even cosmetic surgery. They claim that this pursuit of physical beauty even encourages some women to diet to the point of harming themselves. knowledge and create new friendship bonds among contestants coming from the various states. The first Miss Malaysia Tourism was crowned in 1993 and ever since, Tan Sri Danny Ooi has successfully organised this prestigious pageant, adding tremendous value and significance to the promotion of local tourism. Miss Earth Malaysia Miss Earth is the third-largest international pageant competition among women from countries around the world, after Miss Universe and Miss World. The delegates and winners give meaning and relevance to this beauty competition by promoting worthwhile environmental causes and getting actively involved in caring for the preservation of Mother Earth. This is a true celebration of a woman’s natural beauty, poise and personality. In fact, Miss Earth incorporates a special ‘natural beauty’ round where a women’s natural beauty is judged sans make-up or makeover. This is a tribute to the natural beauty that is a reflection of the beauty within. This pageant aims to appreciate what a woman always wants – to be a natural beauty, unblemished, immaculate and refreshingly natural. Miss Malaysia Earth delegates are selected through a beauty contest which each state in Malaysia will send their top three winners from the state level. All the top three winners will compete at the national level to be crowned as Miss Malaysia Earth and will represent Malaysia at Miss Earth Pageant. Present were five exchange students from the Rotary Club of Ichihara in Japan and two from the Rotary Club of Soekman in Korea. Making up for the poor attendance of last week, 28 Rotarians (66%), three children and two representatives from BP Healthcare attended, making a total of 40 persons in attendance. President Kris called the meeting to order sharply at 1.00 pm and made the usual announcements. PP Seng Chuan was the finemaster by going back to basics as he tested our knowledge of various Rotary personalities. Many failed his test as some could not even provide the names of the RI President, last year’s District AG for the club and the current AG. As a result he was able to extract a credible RM 102 for his effort. Talk on coronary heart disease As usual, the highlight of the meeting was the talk by Guest Speaker Dr Loh Hoong Sheng, Consultant Physician with BP Healthcare, on the subject Coronary Heart Disease. Introduced by PP Kia Heong, Dr Loh was a graduate of the International Medical College in 2006 who won the Gold Medal and was placed in the Dean’s List. In Bulletin 6/44, 19th AUGUST 2014 Week We Shared 2010 he was admitted into the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of the UK. Supported with vivid pictorials, Dr Loh took us into the cardiovascular system and introduced us to CAD (coronary heart diseases), CVD (cardiovascular diseases), IHD (ischemic heart diseases), ACS (acute coronary syndrome) MI (myocardial infarction). He asserts that fatty streak, formed by cholesterol, can begin to occur from age 12 years and the challenge is to control its spread to avoid a heart attack. Statistically, 141 persons per 100,000 population will be victims of a heart attack. There are 144 cases of heart attacks every day, of which only 10% reach the hospital alive, and of these 90% die within the hour! Timeliness to receive medical help is therefore of utmost importance. Risk factors include hypercholesterolemia, diabetes, hypertension, sedentary lifestyle, smoking, obesity and genetics. Except for the last, all factors can be controlled by a change in lifestyle. Malaysia is the sixth ranked for obesity/diabetes and is in the worst position for the Southeast Asian region! We have 2.6 million who suffer from diabetes and one in five Malaysians above 30 years suffer from the disease. More than 30% are estimated to have hypertension, of which only 35% are diagnosed and treated. Unfortunately, the incidence of diabetes and high cholesterol is accelerating over the years. For example, there were only 8.39% diabetics in the 1990’s but this figure jumped to 20.8% in 2011; likewise, the figures for high cholesterol were 20.7% in 2000 and 35.1% in 2011. The principal contributors to the acceleration are the excessive consumption of sugar and salt as people do not pay heed to diet. Older people are more aware of the need to diet, but even for this category only 30% actually take action. What are the signs of an impending heart attack? Nausea, sweating, pale pallor, difficulty in breathing, anxiety and crushing chest pains in men are typical signs. There may be no signs for women. Pain can radiate and not necessarily confined to the chest region, eg. it can spread to the neck and jaw, the shoulders and even the stomach. How can we diagnose for heart problems? An ECG is one important route. So is a blood test for raised cardio biomarkers. Other causes are gastric reflux, pulmonary embolism, pneumothorax, pneumonia and muscle and skeletal injury. Complications include heart failure, shortness of breath, multi-organ failure, irregular heartbeat and embolic stroke. MEMBERSHIP & EXTENSION MONTH 7 The way forward is prevention, viz. dieting, exercise, losing weight, no smoking, stress control and control of diseases. Early screening, including undergoing a stress test, is necessary. Other tests include a CT coronary angiogram and an ultrasound. Treatments include medication, rehabilitation and CPR using the Compression-Airway-Breathing approach. The message imparted is that we should keep calm and call for help! PP Jack thanked Dr Loh for a most interesting talk. Other matters The fund raising Miss Malaysia Tourism dinner was successfully held on 15th August 2014. Exchange students from the Rotary Club of Ichihara in Japan and the Rotary Club of Soekman in Korea are now our guests, and a steamboat dinner will be organised for them on 20th August. All members are invited to participate. The Interactors’ Leadership Seminar was held on 16th August at Catholic High School, led by many of our Past Presidents. The ICC chair is now held by Sri Aman. The Catholic High School Board has been installed, with Assunta following this coming Thursday. On 18th August Interactors of SAS donated RM 15,000 to Mercy Malaysia. The dialogue with IC school principals will be held on 27th August at Armada Hotel in PJ. Bulletin 6/44, 19th AUGUST 2014 Week We Shared Of particular interest is the Group 12 excursion to Lang Tengah in Terengganu on 19-21 September to promote marine conservation. The cost for accommodation, food and other expenses at the resort is RM 800 per pax. Travel will be separate and it was proposed that if numbers permit, a coach will be hired. Bulletin 6/44, 19th AUGUST 2014 MEMBERSHIP & EXTENSION MONTH 9 RI News President Gary C.K. Huang’s ambitious 1.3 million membership goal G ary C.K. Huang never imagined he would become Rotary International's president when he joined in 1976, but now that he is in office, he hopes to increase membership to 1.3 million by the end of his term. "It's simple. The more members we have, the more people we can help. A stronger membership base will result in stronger communities," says Huang, who on 1 July became Rotary's first Chinese president. Huang also hopes his presidential theme, Light Up Rotary, will encourage members to brighten Rotary's image to the public, which he believes in return will improve member recruitment and retention. Huang has a track record of improving membership development in Asia, adding 19 clubs when he was district governor for Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. One of the cornerstones of his presidency is encouraging clubs and districts to conduct a Rotary Day. These one-day events, he says, can spotlight a particular cause, and solidify Rotary's image as one of the world's leading service organizations. "We need to showcase our good work to everyone in the community. Rotary Days need to be fun and all inclusive. Invite your family, friends, and neighbors to participate. My hope is at the end of the day a few non-members will want to join Rotary," he says. "Let's give people the opportunity to experience what it's like to make a difference. Rotary Days can achieve that." Huang designed a travel schedule that will allow him to visit more than 30 Rotary Day events across the globe, including Argentina, Chile, France, India, Italy, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, and the U.S., as well as his home city of Taipei. Huang says he's honored and humbled to be Rotary's president. He knows he's part of an exclusive club. "We [past Rotary presidents] have achieved great success in our businesses and in our communities," says Huang. "But success isn't about power or money. It's about giving back. Being a Rotarian has given me the opportunity to help those in need. As president, I can inspire our members to take advantage of the same opportunity and bring happiness in people's lives." Funding gaps Huang says Rotary members are never short on ideas and innovative ways to solve problems, but funding gaps prevent many of these projects from taking off. For instance, Rotary members in Korea, Japan, and China are strong fundraisers, but struggle to help each other use the funds because of distance and language barriers, Huang says. "I want to show Rotarians why I am their president," he adds. "The best way to do that is to see and inspire their work, participate in their projects, and help them raise funds." "I want to, along with my district governors, reach out and try to link different clubs from different countries together so we can find the right communities in need," he adds. "That's one of the great things about being an international organization: the ability to bring different cultures and backgrounds together to find a common cause."
