A River of Words tells the story of how "Willie" became a poet. In high school, Willie had classes and track practice and lots of homework. “Willie is always in a hurry!” his mother told the neighbors. And it was true. But when Mr. Abbott read poetry to Willie’s English class, Willie did not feel hurried. The gentle sounds and shifting rhythms of the poems were like the music of the river. Your school is taking part in an exciting program that’s designed to get your child reading for fun! It’s the Reading Is the Ticket Countdown Club. Every student who completes 10 hours or 600 minutes of recreational reading will earn a ticket good for free admission to Silverwood Theme Park. It’s fun, it’s easy, and it doesn’t cost a thing! Here’s how it works: • • • • • • • READING IS THE TICKET — Careers areers S tudents in grades K to 8 in participating schools are eligible to join the club. Y our child brought home a Tally Sheet with this letter. Use this sheet to write down all the things he or she reads, and the number of minutes your child spends reading. Then date and initial each reading session. This sheet must be signed by a parent or family member and returned when completed or your child may not be awarded a ticket. In Sky Boys a little boy watches as construction workers build the Empire State Building—the tallest building in the world at that time. Then it’s the sky boys’ show. Derrick men hoisting, swinging, easing each beam into place. High overhead they crawl like spiders on steel, spinning their giant web in the sky. M ake sure your child reads for at least 600 minutes or 10 hours total over the course of the next several weeks. R eading must be completed by the date written on this letter by the teacher or coordinator and on the front of the Tally Sheet. Your child MUST turn ALL Signed Tally sheets in to his or her teacher by this date — in order to be eligible for the free ticket. R eading to complete school assignments doesn’t count for the Countdown Club. But any other reading — books, comic books, magazines, newspapers, online reading, you name it — counts, provided it’s recreational reading. Y ou can read to your child, your child can read aloud to you, or your child can read alone. It all counts toward the 10 hours for the Club. If your child completes 10 hours of reading and turns in the Tally sheets on time, he or she will receive a ticket good for 1 free child’s admission to Silverwood Theme Park! Everyone who completes 600 minutes of reading will earn a free admission ticket! There are no obligations, and there’s no cost to you! Tickets earned may only be used by the child who earned them — they are not transferable to another sibling or a parent/adult. Tickets are valid from June 15th to September 28th, 2014, excluding Saturdays in July and August. Ransom. 5 READING areers READING IS IS THE THE TICKET TICKET — —C Careers BULLETIN BOARD POSTER The poster is designed to be a fun and visual way to motivate your students to read. Two copies are provided so that the poster may be displayed in more than one classroom. This year’s poster says, “Reading Gets the Job Done.” Use the poster slogan to talk about how reading helps people to be successful in just about every career and job. FICTION AND NONFICTION READING EXCERPTS You will find reproducible activity sheets based on fiction and non-fiction reading excerpts for Level One on pages 5 and 6, and for Level Two on pages 9 and 10. The excerpts and questions that follow are designed to motivate students to want to read these books. If possible, have these books available to the class. Often a reluctant reader will read if the book is readily available. Fiction excerpts, questions, and activities are based on the following books: Level One: "Sky Boys: How They Built the Empire State Building" by Deborah Hopkinson and James E. Ransome Level Two: "Rules of the Road" by Joan Bauer Non-fiction excerpts are based on the following books: Level One: ”A River of Words” by Jen Bryant Level Two: "We are the Ship" by Kadir Nelson RECREATIONAL READING WORKSHEETS On pages 7 and 8, you will find two Level One reproducible worksheets. On pages 11 and 12, are two Level Two reproducible worksheets. These worksheets link the experience of reading to writing and other activities. RECREATIONAL READING ACTIVITIES On pages 13 and 14, you will find a variety of activities that can be assigned to your students. These ideas are meant to motivate students to do more recreational reading as well as incorporating more writing and art activities. The activities may be used as small group or individual assignments. FAMILIES: Enjoy a Day of Fun at SUGGESTED READING LISTS Suggested reading lists for both Levels One and Two can be found on pages 15 and 16. Each list is divided into fiction and nonfiction works. There is a vast selection of books that can be linked to the theme of “Jobs and Careers.” Elementary and intermediate level books are listed to provide students and teachers with recreational reading bibliographies. The books in the Level One lists are generally picture books and short chapter books. Although picture books are mainly intended for younger readers, they are valuable and appealing to children of all ages as they pair language and ideas with beautiful artwork. THE READING COUNTDOWN CLUB All the materials you need to coordinate the Reading Countdown Club – an incentive-based reading program for your students – are contained in this teacher’s resource guide. The complete rules and procedures for the Reading Countdown Club can be found on pages 17 and 18, a reproducible tally sheet is on page 19, and a teacher’s roster on page 22. Please be sure to send home with every child the “Dear family” letter and the Silverwood information sheet, found on pages 20 and 21. There is a reproducible Reading Achievement Award certificate on the back cover. Reproduce the award on colored paper for added punch. NOTE: The Reading Achievement Award cannot be used as a ticket into Silverwood Theme Park. Your child can earn a free ticket to Silverwood Theme Park! With the "Reading Is the Ticket" program, children all over the Northwest have earned a day of fun at Silverwood Theme Park. Now it could be your child’s turn. Silverwood is brimming with more than 65 rides, slides, shows and attractions, including world-class coasters, pint-sized kiddie adventure and dazzling entertainment. Also, you can’t miss Boulder Beach Water Park with its lazy river, kids’ play area, water slides, a family raft ride that sits on its very own hilltop, and count them, two 22,000 square foot wave pools.
