William Carlos Williams was one of the most famous poets of the twentieth century. A River of Words tells the story of how "Willie"
became a poet.
In high school, Willie had classes and track
practice and lots of homework. “Willie is
always in a hurry!” his mother told the neighbors. And it was true.
But when Mr. Abbott read poetry to
Willie’s English class, Willie did not feel hurried.
The gentle sounds and shifting rhythms of the
poems were like the music of the river. As the
teacher read each line, Willie closed his eyes
and let them make pictures in his mind.
1. What kind of person is Willie? What does this passage tell you about him?___________________________________________

read. Have your teacher or parent initial every time you read as proof that you have done the reading. If you need more

Y
our child brought home a Tally Sheet with this letter. Use this sheet to write down all the
things he or she reads, and the number of minutes your child spends reading. Then date and
initial each reading session. This sheet must be signed by a parent or family member and
returned when completed or your child may not be awarded a ticket.
In Sky Boys a little boy watches as construction workers build the Empire State Building—the tallest building in the world at that
time.
Then it’s the sky boys’ show.
Derrick men
hoisting, swinging,
easing each beam into place.
High overhead they crawl
like spiders on steel,
spinning their giant web in the sky.
M
ake sure your child reads for at least 600 minutes or 10 hours total over the course of the
next several weeks.
R
eading must be completed by the date written on this letter by the teacher or coordinator
and on the front of the Tally Sheet. Your child MUST turn ALL Signed Tally sheets in to his or
her teacher by this date — in order to be eligible for the free ticket.
R
eading to complete school assignments doesn’t count for the Countdown Club. But any
other reading — books, comic books, magazines, newspapers, online reading, you name it
— counts, provided it’s recreational reading.
Y
ou can read to your child, your child can read aloud to you, or your child can read alone.
It all counts toward the 10 hours for the Club.
If your child completes 10 hours of reading and turns in the Tally sheets on time, he or she will
receive a ticket good for 1 free child’s admission to Silverwood Theme Park! Everyone who
completes 600 minutes of reading will earn a free admission ticket! There are no obligations, and
there’s no cost to you! Tickets earned may only be used by the child who earned them — they are not
transferable to another sibling or a parent/adult. Tickets are valid from June 15th to September 28th,
2014, excluding Saturdays in July and August.
We hope that you take part in this exciting program: It’s a great way to motivate your child
to read and to get ready for a day of family fun at Silverwood Theme Park!

your students to read. Two copies are provided so that the
poster may be displayed in more than one classroom.
This year’s poster says, “Reading Gets the Job Done.” Use the

successful in just about every career and job.
FICTION AND NONFICTION READING EXCERPTS
You will find reproducible activity sheets based on fiction

the book is readily available.

SUGGESTED READING LISTS
Suggested reading lists for both Levels One and Two can be
found on pages 15 and 16. Each list is divided into fiction and
nonfiction works. There is a vast selection of books that can
be linked to the theme of “Jobs and Careers.” Elementary and
intermediate level books are listed to provide students and
teachers with recreational reading bibliographies. The books in
the Level One lists are generally picture books and short chapter
books. Although picture books are mainly intended for younger
readers, they are valuable and appealing to children of all ages
as they pair language and ideas with beautiful artwork.
