WORSHIP
From Father Hathaway’s Desk
The Holy Father’s April
Prayer Intentions
Palm Sunday—Holy Week—Easter Triduum
Universal: Ecology and Justice. That governments may
foster the protection of creation and the just distribution of natural resources.
For Evangelization: Hope
for the Sick. That the Risen
Lord may fill with hope the
hearts of those who are being tested by pain and sickness.
Today, Palm Sunday, we begin the holiest week of the liturgical
year. I encourage you to enter into the mystery of these days by
attending the Masses and services of the Sacred Triduum. We
offer a number of opportunities for Confession this week—see
the days and times listed at the top of page 5. For a complete, dayby-day Holy Week Schedule, pull out the flyer on pages 7 & 8.
You will also find there the Easter Mass schedule. Please note
that the Solemn Easter Vigil Mass with Adult Choir on Saturday,
April 19th is at 8:30 pm (there is no 5:00 pm Mass). At that time we
will celebrate the beautiful service of “The Blessing of the Fire and
Preparation of the Candle,” “The Easter Proclamation,” and “The
Baptismal Liturgy” welcoming a number of new members into the
Catholic Church. On Easter Sunday, April 20th, our Masses with
Cantor and Organ are at 8:00 am, 11:15 am and 5:00 pm, and the
Family Mass with Children’s Choir is at 9:30 am.
Since we have many visitors during this time, the Guidelines
for Receiving Communion are reprinted on page 6.

Bishop’s Lenten Appeal Monthly Reminders
The reminder statements for the Bishop’s Lenten
Appeal pledges are mailed mid-month. It is important that all pledges are completed. Please try
to make your pledge payment prior to the end of
each month so that you will receive credit for it
on your statement the following month. Thank
you for supporting our diocesan church.
Collections This Week
The Holy Thursday collection benefits the Diocesan seminarians, especially those who serve our
Parish in the summer. The Good Friday collection
allows for care of Christianity’s holiest sites and
for God’s people living in the Holy Land. The second collection on Easter is to help cover extra expenses incurred during Holy Week and Easter. As
always, thank you for your generosity.

FELLOWSHIP
Guidelines for Receiving Communion
For Catholics—As Catholics, we fully participate in
the celebration of the Eucharist when we receive Holy Communion. We are encouraged to receive Communion devoutly and frequently. In order to be
properly disposed to receive Communion, participants should not be conscious of grave sin and normally should have fasted for one hour. A person who
is conscious of grave sin is not to receive the Body
and Blood of the Lord without prior sacramental confession except for a grave reason where there is no
opportunity for confession. In this case, the person is
to be mindful of the obligation to make an act of perfect contrition, including the intention of confessing
as soon as possible (Code of Canon Law, 916). A frequent reception of the Sacrament of Penance is encouraged for all.
For Our Fellow Christians—We welcome our fellow Christians to this celebration of the Eucharist as
our brothers and sisters. We pray that our common
baptism and the action of the Holy Spirit in this Eucharist will draw us closer to one another and begin
to dispel the sad divisions which separate us. We
pray that these will lessen and finally disappear, in
keeping with Christ’s prayer for us “that they may all
be one” (John 17:21).
Because Catholics believe that the celebration of the
Eucharist is a sign of the reality of the oneness of
faith, life, and worship, members of those churches
with whom we are not yet fully united are ordinarily
not admitted to Holy Communion. Eucharistic sharing in exceptional circumstances by other Christians
requires permission according to the directives of the
diocesan bishop and the provisions of canon law
(Code of Canon Law, 844 section 4). Members of the
Orthodox Churches, the Assyrian Church of the East,
and the Polish National Catholic Church are urged to
respect the discipline of their own Churches. According to Roman Catholic discipline, the Code of Canon
Law does not object to the reception of Communion
by Christians of these Churches (Code of Canon Law,
844 section 3).
For Non-Christians—We also welcome to this celebration those who do not share our faith in Jesus
Christ. While we cannot admit them to Holy Communion, we ask them to offer their prayers for the
peace and unity of the human family.
For Those Not Receiving Holy Communion—
All who are not receiving Holy Communion are encouraged to express in their hearts a prayerful desire
for unity with the Lord Jesus and with one another.
