Dear Residents,
In life, it’s important to reach for goals, a finish line. While the finish line is important,
the process by which one achieves the end goal is just as important, perhaps even more
important. The process is what builds character, the only way that the achievement can be
made meaningful. The end is rooted in the beginning.

For Katherine (Kat) and Marty Murray, and in particular their son, Robert, aiming for the
finish line has brought meaning to their relationships, amongst family and friends. Robert,
a senior at Whitefish Bay High School, races karts. These aren’t your typical amusement
park go-karts. Robert drives karts manufactured for speed, the types of karts where famous
racecar drivers got their start, like Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Danica Patrick.
Yet, the ultimate goal isn’t necessarily to become the next racing star. Rather, the racing
itself provides lessons for all those involved, including ethics, sportsmanship, awareness,
coordination, trust, math, engineering, how to be a role model, and the list goes on and on.
Skills learned on the racetrack are fused into every realm of life.
For the Murray family, the racetrack has come full circle. Robert’s father, Marty, grew up
racing motorcycles in Ireland. Kat, Robert’s mother, is integral to the process, not only for
Robert but for other competitors. She coordinates various aspects that are invaluable for the
racers and their parents, including social events that forge camaraderie and friendship. She
takes initiatives head-on to lend support wherever it’s needed. She attributes her traits to the
people she admires most—her parents—Robert and Joanne Fuller, current Whitefish Bay
residents who have lived here for over 35 years. A circle of life.
Explore the Murray’s fascinating story in this month’s family feature.

Clothes make the Man
By Tom Fehring, Historic Preservation Commission
There’s an expression, “Clothes make the man.” In Harry
Levine’s case, it was women’s clothes.
An Austrian immigrant, Harry Levine was a self-made
man who eventually worked his way up to become the
owner of Rosenberg’s, possibly the most fashionable
women’s clothing store of its day. It was located in
Milwaukee’s German district on North 3rd Street, a few
blocks north of the Schlitz Brewery complex.
Harry and his wife, Ada, celebrated their success in 1930
by constructing a stunning limestone Tudor Revival
home on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan at 5320
N. Lake Dr. The builder was the A.C. Wolf Co., but the
architect is unknown. The couple lived in the home until
1950 with their three sons, Leonard, Willard and Edward.
The home is part of the proposed Pabst Historic District.
Harry Levine emigrated from Austria with his parents
when he was 10 years old, and worked as a young lad
of 14 or 15 at the Pabst Whitefish Bay Resort in the early
1900’s, before later turning his sights to business. His
son, Leonard, later became president of Rosenberg’s. The
store was a fixture on North Third Street until it closed
in 1963. •

Kart Racing
Accelerates
Life for the
Murrays
Robert in his kart
Robert at work on his kart
Robert and Marty
Marty as a youngster in the side car
By Joshua Becker
In today’s hurry up, workaday
world, where we eat on the run
and there’s not a moment to lose,
the conventional advice is, “slow
down,” “stop and smell the roses,”
“take it easy.” For the Murray family,
accelerating is the goal, provided
that goal centers on kart racing.
These aren’t your typical amusement
park go-karts, piddling along with a
lawn mower engine, clunky and run
by electric power. For kart racer Robert
Murray, an Eagle Scout with Troop 398
and a senior at Whitefish Bay High
School, kart racing entails highly tuned
gasoline engines, manufactured for
speed. In an array of racing machines,
top of the line karts look like mini Indy
cars and reach speeds up to 180 miles
per hour.
It’s a family affair. Robert’s parents,
Katherine (Kat) and Marty, are not only
Robert’s biggest fans, they are the pit
crew, the managers, the liaisons. The
Murrays bring a whole new meaning to
a family that acts as a team.
It’s a team that is constantly on the go,
figuratively and literally. In the past
seven years, the Murrays are away from
home two to three weekends a month,
to their second home—the racetrack.
For those unaccustomed to the sport,
this schedule, not to mention the actual
racing, might seem dizzying.
Instead, racing grounds them. It
provides a strong foundation of support,
building relationships for their own
family and with families of fellow
racers. “Karting,” said Robert, “makes
me feel like it is a family orientated sport
that everyone can be involved in. My
dad is our mechanic and my mom helps
with support, photos, cooks and plans
evenings of social gatherings for the
kids.”
To note, these gatherings don’t occur
in a hotel or at an individual residence;
rather, the racers and their families
literally camp at the track the entire
weekend, where they eat, sleep, do
homework, and . . . race. Community
is paramount, where the individual
families forge into a large, extended
family.

RESIDENT FEATURE
“Friendships form out of the oddest
situations,” said Kat. “With one family
we became friends when their dog
passed away, others when they have
jumped in and started helping after a
wreck. Sometimes it is just lending a
part or answering questions and helping
out new racers.”
track in Dousman, a facility hosted by
the Badger Kart Club at the Briggs &
Stratton Raceway Park.
Although Robert has raced in other
states, Robert estimated that in the past
seven years he has completed at least
5,000 laps around the track in Dousman.
The President of the Badger Kart Club,
Bingo Emmons, spoke of the positive
influence the Murrays have on the
organization.
Helping is an essential part of the racing
experience. Robert explained, “I have
found myself to be an unofficial mentor
to some of the younger kids in the sport.
I have coached lots of driving lessons
to younger kids and helped to build
their confidence behind the wheel.” His
mother noted, “When Robert pulls into
the track, all the younger kids that look
up to him come running.”
“I have known the Murrays since the
first day they started coming out to
Badger Raceway,” said Bingo. “We are a
volunteer club and they stepped up and
helped out right away. Kat became the
club secretary and Marty got involved
in tech and is currently our Head of
Tech. I’ve known Robert since he was a
rookie to now a mature young man, an
established, well respected racer.”
These can include kids much younger
than Robert, as some racers are as young
as five-years-old. It’s a connection that
brings back memories for Robert’s father,
Marty, who raced motorcycles as a kid
growing up in Ireland. Continuing this
tradition with Robert is very special.
“I wanted to find some kind of sport
that we both could do together,” said
Marty. And it couldn’t have turned
out better, particularly at their home
As a racer, Robert has won two
championships and finished highly
in similar competitions, along with
numerous race wins. Yet, more
important than the checkered flag is the
winning record that racing fosters for its
participants.

David Klaus, the Director of Briggs
& Stratton Racing and a Whitefish
Bay resident, stated, “Racing makes
for strong family units as it really is a
team oriented approach. Young racers
gain life lessons, of winning and
losing, but also learning from doing. Karting is fundamentally STEM based
(science, technology, engineering, and
mathematics) well before STEM became
a buzz word in education.”
They are lessons Robert will take with
him next school year at Milwaukee
School of Engineering (MSOE), where he
is excited to get involved in the school’s
car racing programs. For Robert’s
parents, both of whom work and
additionally attend college with a focus
on Individualized Studies, Marty said,
“Sometimes after a long workweek, it’s
good to get away to a racetrack for the
weekend where you will have a relaxing
and fun-filled time with friends,” where
speeding up means slowing down.

Are You Prepared for a Summer Storm?
By Lieutenant Dan Tyk, North Shore Fire/Rescue Community Relations Officer
We are all excited for the warmer weather
that comes with summer, but are you
prepared to react when severe weather
strikes? The National Weather Service
has deemed June 23, 2015, Lightning
Awareness Day. While lightning can put
on an incredible show in the sky, it can be
extremely dangerous, even deadly.
The National Weather Service says that, each
year, there are more than 25 million cloudto-ground lightning strikes resulting in more
than 50 deaths and countless fires to brushes
and structures. The following safety tips can
help you during a lightning storm.
Buildings during a Lightning Storm
A safe shelter is a building with electricity
and/or plumbing or a metal-topped vehicle
with windows closed. Picnic shelters,
dugouts, small buildings without plumbing
or electricity are not safe. Below are some
key safety tips for you, your pets and your
home. There are three main ways lightning
enters structures: a direct strike, through
wires or pipes that extend outside the
structure, and through the ground. Once
lightning is in a structure, it can travel
through the electrical, phone, plumbing
and radio/television reception systems.
Lightning can also travel through any metal
wires or bars in concrete walls or flooring.
Here are important precautionary measures:
• Do not use corded phones. Instead, you
can use cellular or cordless phones.
• Do not touch electrical equipment such as
computers, televisions or cords. Remote
controls are safe to use.
• Avoid plumbing. Do not wash your hands,
nor should you take a shower or wash
dishes.
• Stay away from windows and doors that
might have small leaks around the sides
where lightning can enter, and stay off
porches.
• Do not lie on concrete floors or lean
against concrete walls.
• Protect your pets. Dog houses are not
safe shelters. Dogs that are chained to
trees or on metal runners are particularly
vulnerable to lightning strikes.
• Protect your property. Lightning generates
electric surges that can damage electronic
equipment, even at some distance from the
actual strike. Typical surge protectors will
not protect equipment from a lightning
strike. The American Meteorological
Society has tips for protecting your
electronics from lightning. Do not unplug
equipment during a thunderstorm as there
is a risk you could be struck.
Finally, here are 4 common myths about
lightning from the National Weather Service:
Myth: Lightning never strikes the same place
twice.
Fact: Lightning often strikes the same place
repeatedly, especially if it is a tall, pointy, isolated
object. The Empire State Building is hit nearly 100
times a year.
If you are Outside during a Lightning
Storm
There is little you can do to substantially
reduce your risk if you are outside in a
thunderstorm. The only completely safe
action is to get inside a safe building or
vehicle.
Myth: If it is not raining or there aren’t clouds
overhead, you’re safe from lightning.
Fact: Lightning often strikes more than three
miles from the center of the thunderstorm, far
outside the rain or thunderstorm cloud. “Bolts
from the blue” can strike ten to fifteen miles from
the thunderstorm.
If you absolutely cannot get to safety, you
can slightly lessen the threat of being struck
by following certain tips. But don’t kid
yourself—you are NOT safe outside. Know
the weather patterns of the area you plan
to visit. For example, in mountainous areas,
thunderstorms typically develop in the
early afternoon, so plan to hike early in the
day and be down from the mountain by
noon. Listen to the weather forecast for the
outdoor area you plan to visit. The forecast
may be very different from a forecast near
your home. If there is a high chance of
thunderstorms, stay inside. In addition, take
note of these recommendations:
• Avoid open fields. Also, avoid the top of a
hill or a ridgetop.
• Stay away from tall, isolated trees or other
tall objects. If you are in a forest, stay near
lower trees.
• If you are in a group, spread out to avoid
the current traveling between group
members.
• If you are camping in an open area, set up
camp in a valley, ravine or other low area.
Remember, a tent offers NO protection
from lightning.
• Stay away from water and wet items, such
as ropes, metal objects, fences and poles.
Water and metal do not attract lightning,
but they are excellent conductors of
electricity. An electric current from a
lightning flash easily travels for long
distances.
Myth: Rubber tires on a car protect you from
lightning by insulating you from the ground.
Fact: Most cars are safe from lightning, but it
is the metal roof and metal sides that protect
you, NOT the rubber tires. Yet other modes
of transportation, including convertibles,
motorcycles, bicycles, open-shelled outdoor
recreational vehicles and cars with fiberglass
shells, do not offer protection from lightning.
When lightning strikes a vehicle, it goes through
the metal frame into the ground. Don’t lean on
doors during a thunderstorm.
Myth: A lightning victim is electrified. If you
touch that person, you will be electrocuted.
Fact: The human body does not store electricity.
It is perfectly safe to touch a lightning victim to
give him/her first aid. This is the most chilling of
lightning myths. Imagine if someone died because
people were afraid to give CPR!
Above all, use common sense. If you are
unsure about whether it is safe to stay
outside as a storm approaches, play it safe
and head indoors. North Shore Fire/Rescue
wishes everyone a safe and enjoyable
summer! If you have additional questions or
would like more information about North
Shore Fire/Rescue, please visit www.nsfire.

Welcome Summer to Silver Spring Drive
By Karen Mathu, Whitefish Bay Business Improvement District
Summer, 2015, on Silver Spring Drive will be a great season to celebrate. Residents will
be moving into the new Beaumont Place apartments. Additionally, enjoy restored offstreet parking and of course, continued great shopping and services at your favorite
establishments. Much has happened in the last year in Whitefish Bay’s business district,
including the new housing. In addition, several new businesses opened their doors,
including Mathnasium, Pure Barre, Fringe Interior Design and Home Furnishings, Daddy
Yo’s Frozen Yogurt, Ellenbecker Investment Group, Jimmy Johns, Wagner Pediatric
Dentistry, and more!
As an organization, the Whitefish Bay Business Improvement District (BID) is diligently
working to maintain and spread the street’s renewed energy by organizing well-trafficked
events. Also, the BID is providing incentives to retailers to invest in Silver Spring Drive and
sharing information about the district to the community.
The BID Board is comprised of residents, businesspeople and property owners in the
community who are dedicated to creating a prosperous and inviting district for current
and potential patrons and businesses. Through assisting in several efforts to enhance
Silver Spring Drive’s beautiful retail district, the BID most visibly has been hard at work
coordinating activities for the street.
In addition to supporting Whitefish Bay Civic Foundation events, in the coming months,
the BID will be presenting the annual Sidewalk Sales (Fri., July 17th and Sat., July 18th) and
the Whitefish Bay Farmer’s Market (Saturday mornings from 8am-12pm, beginning July 11).

In 1925, Divinity Evangelical Lutheran
Church was founded in Whitefish Bay
and called itself Pentecostal Evangelical
Lutheran Church. The name was changed
to Divinity in 1940. In 1965, Divine Charity
Evangelical Lutheran Church, then on the
corner of North 1st Street and East Chambers
St., Milwaukee, moved to the Bay to form
Divinity-Divine Charity Ev. Lutheran
Church, affectionately known as DDC.
During the first 25 years, DDC was served
by the late Rev. Alfred Walther. For the last
25 years, DDC has been served by the Rev.
Robert Dick, who also serves Whitefish Bay
and the six other communities of the North
Shore by volunteering as a Chaplain with the
North Shore Fire Department.

Are you ready for a second Pet?
By Karen Sparapani, Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission
Many people love their dog or cat so much
that they just cannot help but think that
adding another animal to the household
would easily double the joy and the love.
Before you jump into a commitment of an
additional animal in your home, please take
the time to consider the following questions:
Are you and your family really ready?
A new dog or cat means more time for play
and training. Many people with an easy-tolive-with companion think the next one will
be just as easy. Like people, animals have
their own personalities and temperaments
and are not always as easy as they first
appear.
Is your current companion ready? A
friendly dog at the dog park may not want
to share its home or owner with another
dog. Does your current companion get
along with other animals or seek out
attention from other animals? Make
sure your current pet is up-to-date on all
vaccines and in good health before exposing
them to a new animal. Are your animals
sterilized? Intact animals can produce
unwanted litters, so make sure you have
your current pet spayed or neutered before
bringing a new one home.
Are you prepared for the additional
costs? You will not always spend double on
everything, but you will experience higher
food and toy costs. Many vets will offer
multiple pet discounts, but adding another
animal will surely increase your animal
care budget each month.
Did you consider your current
companion’s age, activity level and size?
Before bringing another animal home, take
into account what will work best for your
best friend. Is a puppy right for a senior
who has a low activity level? Is a Great Dane
the best fit for a tea-cup-sized adult? Do
you have a playful, active kitty and want
to bring home a senior kitty with a medical
condition? When making a perfect match
for your family, please remember to think
about a perfect match for your companion.
In the Community, for the Community
Summer Indoor Picnic
Tues., June 9, 11:30am-2pm
After all, they will spend the most time
with the new addition, every day.
Are you ready for the introduction? Dogs
and cats have different styles of proper
introduction. While many people are
fortunate, and merely introduce the new
friends in a room where they instantly “hit
it off,” more often than not, this will take
some work. Cats need slow introductions
over a few weeks, keeping a new kitty
in a separate space. Dogs should meet
outdoors in a neutral area before they
are brought into the house together. This
initial meeting will lay the foundation for a
forever-friendship, so it is best not to rush
the process.
Remember to give any new additions time
and patience. All new relationships take
time to develop, people and animals alike.
Be prepared for the animal that is already
well acquainted with you to exhibit jealousy,
or develop some unwanted behaviors while
they are adjusting. Do not be afraid to call
a trainer or your vet for some tips if there
is any trouble. Multiple animal households
are often harmonious and full of fun for
everyone, and we encourage everyone
to go to their nearest shelter to find an
additionally good fit for your home.

Free Event
Would you like to see what it’s like to sail on Lake Michigan? Sea Scouts welcomes young
men and women, ages 14 through 20, to join them on Saturday, June 13th, for a sail on its 28foot sailboat, Highlight. They’ll be setting sail at 2pm and returning around 5pm. There’s no

adheres to strict safety protocols and at least two adults are always present. Ship 5069 sails Highlight at least once a week between May and October from the Milwaukee
