There will not be much of a boat launch disruption since the floats can be repaired on site and replaced one at a time. The contractor estimates two to three days for the process. It has been several months that I have included a message and this one – I am happy to say - will have some good news. As you know the Marina, one of our major assets to the village, has been the focus of our attention these past months. When it became clear this year that we needed to maintain and upgrade our marina – the first maintenance item, as identified by both the marina committee and an independent contractor, were the hinges supporting the fingers on A and B dock. I am happy to say that this project has been completed and on budget. Some 30 hinges have been replaced and as the picture above shows some of the hinges were very close to failing. Many of the connecting bolts were at less than 30% strength. It does not take much, based on their condition - to fail in the next storm. The boat owners on A and B dock have commented to me how much safer the fingers are to walk on, now that they are solidly attached again. Last week we have poured the concrete access apron to the launch ramp dock so that repair process can begin. We are waiting for the lumber to finish the off site treatment process and hopefully we can repair the aging, if not dangerous, I must apologize to the folks that live on the lakes – we tried last year to lower the levels but were unsuccessful due to the wet summer. This year it looks like the project should be completed within the week and hopefully, then last for another 30 years. The lake drainage pipes need to be cleaned as they are severely blocked. Since the lakes are an integral part of the overall village drainage system, we need to make sure that the system works as designed. The last few winters have been much wetter than usual and this project is important to minimize flooding. I know it looks unsightly – but please bear with us. The contractor is on standby and will work as fast as possible. While the lakes levels are down – which also affect the golf course water traps – we are going to retrieve some of the errant golf balls and recycle some of them for our junior golf program. SPECIAL EVENTS... Kids & Pet Parade - Sept 1 Birch Bay Par 3 - Sept 3 Duffers Scramble II - Sept 9 Cancer Walk - Sept 16 Art Sale - Sept 8 Golf Championship - Sept 22 & 23 Clubhouse Closure - Sept 24 - Oct 5 OVER THE HORIZON: SC Oktoberfest - Oct 13 Autumn Craft Bazaar - Oct 20 YC Commodore’s Ball - Oct 27 Page 2 Birch Bay Village Bulletin - September 2012 FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT MANAGER’S CORNER We have received bids and awarded the bid for the new floor in the Clubhouse. We are going to close the clubhouse starting September 24th to all activities for two weeks. This time slot allows for any unforeseen additional repairs to the floor, should they become necessary, otherwise we’ll open the Clubhouse sooner to activities, whenever the floor installation is complete. should be expected. For most of the time, the plan is to keep the exit open, the Visitors’ Lane closed, and all incoming traffic will go through the Members’ Lane. There may be times when other options may be necessary, such as opening the Lower Gate, especially for exit, and will be on a day-to-day basis. Your patience is requested during this time. Finally a last word – recently I have received a complaint regarding some insensitivity displayed to a person protected under the ADA laws. The Federal laws are quite clear and the fines can be substantial. They are there for a reason – to protect the handicapped. Service dogs fall under that rule too. So please, show the courtesy and understanding which we, in the Pacific Northwest are known for. As Peter mentioned, the final section of the drainage project that has been ongoing for the last few years is underway. Catch basins have been cleaned and culverts inspected (some using state of the art robotic cameras), cleaned with high pressure water, and in some cases replaced. One of the hardest sections to access is a section running under Sehome Road and into Thunderbird Lake. It is now possible to see some of the culvert dumping into the lake and it appears to be partially plugged. There are five vaults and a standpipe that lead to the outfall and it now appears that at least one vault is full of gravel or other matter. Getting this accomplished has meant lowering Thunderbird lake to access the outfall and has created a hardship on some who use the lake, but will benefit those homes surrounding the Golf Course and the Golf Course itself from some of the flooding problems that arise each winter. Apologies to those living on Thunderbird lake for the temporary lowering of the water levels but many who live on the Golf Course are very thankful. Peter Winterfeld President, Board of Directors MANAGER’S CORNER Welcome to September. A lot of activity planned for the month. Check the calendar for particulars. The Clubhouse will be closed at the end of the month (starting September 24th) to remove the carpet and tile. Then Great Floors will be preparing the floor, laying the flooring and the tile and the Clubhouse should be ready for business by October 5th. With the Clubhouse closure for the flooring project, the Maintenance Shop Conference Room is in the process of some modernization and will be available for small groups and committees displaced by the Clubhouse closure. Please ask about its availability. The Launch Ramp Dock will be repaired sometime in mid to late September and will be done on the two days that crabbing is closed so there should be no disruption of launching for the crabbers. We will know more about the timing when the wood gets returned from being treated and the dock pieces are assembled. As it stands now, with some permitting still being finalized, the remodel of the Front Gate and Guard House should be starting in late September-early October. This should be a four to five week project and some delays The Swimming Pool has been getting some major use during these hot days. Glad to see members using the amenities. The Whatcom County Health Board has requested that the floor of the pool be re-painted a lighter or white color so that bodies lying on the pool floor can be seen across the pool for safety reasons. When the pool closes for the season, that project will be undertaken and ready for next summer’s use. One more project currently underway concerns the Maintenance Yard. School starts back up August 29th, so be aware that our children will be walking back and forth from the bus stop each morning and afternoon. The lower half of Salish is considered a school zone, so be careful with your speeds and be aware of pedestrian traffic. Birch Bay Village Bulletin - September 2012 Page 5 YACHT CLUB The month of August 2012 will be long remembered in Birch Bay Village. Early in the month we had a very successful yard sale and, more recently, we had a very special salmon bake. This year, the weather for the village yard sale was sunny and hot, blazing hot. As a result, Birch Bay Drive was choked with yard sale traffic and we had record attendance. The yacht club security detail was kept extremely busy directing traffic and protecting pedestrians. Meanwhile the YC tent was mobbed with eager buyers while the sales team responded with cool efficiency and friendly service. Thanks to all the volunteers who came out to work this event and thanks to the many who donated items to be sold for this important YC fundraiser. Fast forward to Saturday the 18th, which turned out to be the first day of winter, and the annual salmon bake event. We had planned to have outdoor dining on the new patio, but Mother Nature had other ideas. As the temperature dropped and the wind rose, we gathered inside the Clubhouse to enjoy a spectacular dinner of tender and juicy herb butter grilled Lummi sockeye salmon surrounded by gourmet side dishes including pineapple muffins and an amazing dessert. On behalf of the sold-out crowd of appreciative diners, we extend our most sincere thanks to the all-volunteer team of chefs, grill masters, and the many supporting actors who made this event so wonderful. Two upcoming can't-miss events include the October 6th Fall General Meeting at the Clubhouse and the October 27th Commodore's Cowboy Ball at the Kranz Koop (see announcement). If you need to brush up on your line dancing skills, don't forget the informal country dancing classes announced last month. In spite of the cool temperatures, there's still plenty of good boating weather left this season; see you on the water. ~ Chris Doutre, Rear Commodore “Window Washing” “Pressure Washing” Driveways & Decks Free Estimates Call Terry @ 371-0896 BBVCC Resident Page 6 Birch Bay Village Bulletin - September 2012 ART GROUP GOLF NEWS We’re sorry to report the September 8th Art Show has been cancelled. Instead the group will be showing their wares along with the crafters at the October 20th Autumn Craft Bazaar. Greeting cards made from watercolor paintings of Birch Bay Village scenes along with the original paintings will be offered for sale, as well as other work by members of the group. 2012 BBV Junior Golf Program hosts record youths– Following a successful June clinic attended by 16 youth, Joe Holdridge, BBV’s own “resident” PGA professional (BBV Golf Shop manager/owner of Joe’s Professional Golf Lab) and his son, Spencer, taught another 15 eager young boys and girls the basics of golf during a second clinic held from August 20th to 22nd session (see accompanying photo). Each day ended with a BBQ hotdog, chips and drink and the program wrapped up with a mini -tournament on August 23rd. Now how good is that? We hope to see even more youth come out next year as the program just keeps on getting better. Page 8 Birch Bay Village Bulletin - September 2012 WINE CLUB September 21st we are back to tasting red wine with an adventure into a grape variety that many people are unfamiliar with: Cabernet Franc. Although it is one of the four major grapes that are used in Bordeaux blends it is less often found bottled by itself except in the region of Chinon in France where it makes a light red wine with aromas of tobacco, raspberry, bell pepper, cassis and even violets. This is a wine for people who want something a little lighter than Cabernet Sauvignon. This should be an interesting tasting. We are moving back to our regular meeting day and time; the third Friday of the month September 21st at 7:30pm. We will be meeting at the Clubhouse. Please make your reservation by September 16th by calling Jim Macmillan at 371-2933 or by email at [email protected]. The cost will be $20 per tasted and please bring an appetizer or dessert to share with the group. You will need 6 glasses for the tasting. And, coming up: October 19th Barolo November 16th Gamay FRIENDSHIP TEA BBV CANCER WALK September 16th 2:00pm @ BBV Clubhouse ! It’s time to get serious! The Cancer Walk is coming up. It will be a day packed with a "walk" of 3 to 5 miles. If you’re not up to a long walk or any walk, you’re welcome to participate with a golf cart, bike or car. If that doesn't work well for you, then take the time to enjoy your friends and neighbors at the clubhouse events from 2:00pm to 5:00pm. We will have ice cream sundaes, chair massage, make-up artists and acupuncture for good health and beauty. A real pleasure will be the ongoing music by our very own BBV music group. They are planning a special array of music to sooth our souls. Make a day of the walk and events in the Clubhouse. This is the first year for this event. Lets make a memory of it and walk for a cure. All proceeds will go to St. Joe's new cancer center in Bellingham. Registration forms are available in this bulletin or call me for an e-mailed attachment or I will drop one or more off to your home.
