WALWA WORLD Free - Donations Accepted a free monthly Walwa-Jingellic community newsletter covering the Upper Murray from Tintaldra to Burrowye and from Ournie to Talmalmo October 2015 WALWA COMMUNITY SHOP STILL GOING STRONG AFTER TWO AND A HALF YEARS The Walwa Community shop has now been going for 21/2 years. The enthusiasm of our band of volunteers and the support of our community has made the shop such a success. We are now coming to the busy season when lots of tourists are travelling through the area and bringing money from out of town into our community. We now have a store stocked with summer gear, lots of interesting reading and plenty of bric-a-brac. We are open three days a week; Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 10:30am to 3:30pm. We are always looking for volunteers so if you have a spare few hours come in and have a go at volunteering, it is a great way of getting to know people and communicating with out of towners. At the moment we have some plants. Eggs are also available and fruit and veg when available. Walwa World October 2015 walwa.com.au or walwabushnursing.com LINE DANCING AT WALWA ON TUESDAYS! Petrol and food accounts were submitted to Country Fire On the 75th year anniversary of its inauguration, the new Burrowye Authority for payment and details of doctor and hospital expenses Fire Shed was officially opened on Saturday September 26th. A for treatment for fire victims, both members and non-members, to crowd of local and regional firefighters and their families were be notified to Mr Brock, Regional Fire Officer. joined by State Member Bill Tilley, CFA senior staff and Regional Officers and volunteers - CEO Euan Ferguson and wife Kristen, 1953 saw Guys Forest Fire Brigade formed and in 1955 there was Paul King, Ross Coyle, Howard Smith VFBV, Alex Todd, Col a motion of support for "application for a truck from the C.F.A., to Brown, Warwick Ross and Graeme Clyde. Other Shire representatives included Towong Shire Mayor David Wortman be used between the two brigades". and Walwa Police officer Andrew Green. After a number of short and amusing speeches, the shed was officially opened by Burrowye Brigade Captain Neil Mitchell in conjunction with CFA Board Member Ross Coyle. Euan Ferguson then presented 21 Burrowye volunteer firefighters with medals celebrating their years of service. Euan stated that these medals represented a total of some 650 collective years for the group, with a number of members having in excess of 50 years service. Certificates of appreciation were also presented to two long time supporters of the group Bernice Mitchell and Shirley Cheshire. The day was complete with a BBQ lunch and viewing of the shed and facilities. Thanks go to those members of the brigade who helped organise the day. Historical Notes from the Burrowye Brigade meeting minutes (extracts by current Secretary Fiona Kucka) Wireless was obtained in 1963 and the pump and engine was to be replaced with "a more modern self-priming unit". Meetings were held in private residences, at Burrowye School or Mount Alfred School with equipment checks at Max Houston's woolshed and preparations at Houston's Lagoon. In 1969 land was donated for a fire shed and working bees held on the shed in 1970-71 with CFA offering a concrete floor for the brigade shed in 1971. By 1970 the Guys Forest Brigade had ceased as members from that brigade area had recommenced attendance at Burrowye brigade meetings. On 13 August 1971 a Picnic Cabaret Ball was held in conjunction with Walwa to provide funding for wireless radios. A meeting chaired by Cleaver Gadd was held on 11 March 1940 to determine the establishment of a Local Bush Fire Brigade. The boundaries of the brigade, to be named the Burrowye District Bush Fire Brigade, were set and Max Houston was elected President, Cleaver Gadd Secretary, Jas Grant and Ray Gadd Vice Presidents. A membership fee of five shillings was charged. In 1976 Hillas Houston became Captain, Paul Jeffries first became Secretary and Noel Cheshire was a Lieutenant. In 1983 Hillas resigned and Noel Cheshire became Captain. Ladies were to be offered membership which saw Bernadette Cheshire become Communications Officer in 1984, a role she still holds today. A quick fill pump was acquired in 1986, and in 1991 a different fire truck, which was replaced with the current one in 1996. At a second meeting held later that month on 19 March 1940 it was determined that the brigade should be a volunteer brigade with In 1996 the Brigade finally moved to the Corryong Group, a move George Cheshire as Captain and Lieutenants determined by locale: initially mooted in 1976 due to radio problems. R Hutchinson (Guys Forest), Merv Gadd (Mount Alfred), K Neil Mitchell became Brigade President/Chairman in 1992 with Sutherland (Thologolong), W Grant (Koetong) and E Miller Paul Jeffries undertaking his second stint as Secretary at the same (Burrowye). "Each Lieutenant to procure two forty-four gallon time and then a third commenced in 1998 continuing through to petrol drums and keep them full of water and in a convenient 2014. Neil Mitchell was elected 1st Lieutenant in 1998 and he position for loading onto a conveyance." The President and commenced his role as Captain in 2000. In just under 40 years Secretary to purchase drums if necessary and funnels for filling there have been only three Brigade Captains: Hillas Houston, Noel them. The balance of funds to be spent on beaters and knapsack Cheshire and Neil Mitchell sprays to be in the care of Lieutenants. A meeting on 9 November 1941 moved to apply for registration with the Victorian Bushfire Brigades Association and requested that the Brigade become a member of Tallangatta group of Brigades "in making application for one of the power fire fighting units made available by the Forest Commission". In 1942 the Brigade became part of the Auxiliary Force of the Volunteer Defence Corps and a pack saddle with water tanks attached was purchased. By 1946 there was a fire truck and application made for a "Walkie Talkie telephone". In 1947 a list of 52 members was sent in for registration. It was a perfect day ... warm and sunny and the marquee set up on the tennis court looked gorgeous. Mel had chosen soft green tablecloths which serenely set off the floral arrangements of proteas, waratahs and Geralton Wax. A lovely touch was a table displaying the wedding photos of Matt and Mel's two sets of grandparents as well as parents. Mel's attendants were her sister, Kristen and best friend Katy (our daughter-in-law). Matt had his brother Andrew as best man, and his sister, Laura as grooms-person. Here they could see the township of Walwa in the distance. (See photo below) John Toohey our new Jingellic Show President, Steve McHarg and Merrilee Royal had a “pleasant drive” up the hill and took morning tea and fed all the riders with many cakes and other goodies made by committee members, as well as hot and cold drinks. Compiled by Cecilia and photos by Cecelia and Helen Coggan Also Kim from Wodonga found out about our trail ride on Facebook, she decided to drive up the hill to show her parents who were on holiday from England, our countryside. What a ride they must have had. I heard the details from Paul Emerson who travelled with them. Walwa World October 2015 16 walwa.com.au or walwabushnursing.com Then very slowly all the riders started the steep hill decent carefully, with Ace Coughlan following last to make sure all riders arrived safely for their BBQ meal. Meanwhile Bob Olman, Davide and I went ahead and set up camp in the picturesque valley at Kohlhagen’s farm alongside Horse Creek. Thinking we had plenty of time to set up the marquee and start preparing for their arrival. Dave started the fire and put the billy on. Bob had to leave so I started unloading all the food out of my car and then started buttering the bread. All of a sudden I heard the sound of talking in the distance. Looking up the hill I was very surprised to see the riders arriving early. Dave and I swung into action, firing up the BBQ, when hot, loaded it with hamburgers, sausages and onions. The kids were all very hungry but waited patiently whilst the food cooked and they and the adults had a cool drink and billy tea. Soon everyone filled up with lunch followed by cakes of all description. Before long it was time to head back to the Jingellic Showgrounds and on arrival everyone attended to their horse's needs. They then had time to relax with a drink and catch up with new and old friends. Their evening meal was provided by many show members, cooking their own favourite camp oven meals. This year there was a large variety of meals with damper bread, followed by bread and butter pudding, apple pie, cream and ice-cream all while sitting around many open log fires to keep warm. Thank you to everyone that helped to make the day a great success. It is the story of the arrival of the First Fleet and one man's contact with the indigenous people who lived in the area of the settlement. Lieutenant Rooke is intrigued by their language and forms a bond with the local people in the hope that he can learn to communicate and record the language. Kate Grenville was inspired by the First Fleet notebooks of William Dawes. Old Batteries She weaves a wonderful story and shows great knowledge and insight of astronomy, the hierarchy of the military, the problems encountered in setting up the colony as well as linguistics. are Kate Grenville also wrote "The Secret River" which is a wonderful read. Bron Tangled Threads Walwa/Jingellic Craft Group Our group has been meeting every month this year and we have achieved quite a lot. Most of our time has been spent sitting around doing our own crafts which has been mostly knitting and having a good chat. We have knitted for the yarn bombing of the Submarine in Holbrook, Poppies for Anzac day and scarves, slippers and blankets for Nepal. Even though our group is small everyone enjoys the time to just sit and have time to themselves. So give John Blackburn a ring on 02 6037 1232 or Jim Lacey on 0429 371 256. They will pick up your old batteries as a fund raiser for the Walwa Memorial Hall or you can drop them off in the lane behind the Old Walwa Service Centre which is now owned by Peter Downs. Walwa World October 2015 November is our last get together for the year and we are looking forward to having a card making demonstration.
