BECOMING MORE
We talk a lot about the power of transformation at The Children’s Home — about
helping children overcome their challenges and become more than their diagnoses or
behaviors. This process of “overcoming” and “becoming” is reflected in our community
messaging, and is also the theme of this year’s annual report.
Overcoming and becoming. It’s an idea that’s relevant not only to the children we
serve, but also to The Children’s Home itself as we have evolved. We’ve moved beyond
our history as an orphanage, adoption agency and residential treatment center, and have
become a diverse multiservice agency with a broad agenda. For example, we’re:
Becoming more influential. Over the past year, we’ve become more involved in
healthcare initiatives that impact children in our community. Our partnerships with
local institutions and our participation in the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s
Triple Aim Learning Community supports our goal of enhancing children’s health
and delivering high-quality care at a sustainable cost.
Becoming more holistic. We are integrating children’s mental, physical, social and
developmental health needs, recognizing that “health” involves the whole child. Our
medical staff works with community pediatricians to enhance their understanding of
children’s mental health issues, and we’re positioning ourselves as a leader in care
management under the Affordable Care Act of 2010.
Becoming more visible. To build awareness of our programs and encourage more
referrals, we have begun to promote our brand and our institutional credibility in
Cincinnati and elsewhere. Our broad range of services and overall excellence attract
top talent, leadership and community volunteers to our organization.
Becoming more accountable. We’ve refocused our culture to be the very best we
can be for the children we serve. We are paying close attention to client outcomes,
and conducting longitudinal studies to track children’s progress and success after
they leave us.
We’ll soon begin our 150th year and look forward to celebrating our many
successes. We appreciate your support as our organization and the children we serve
continue to “become.”

EARLY CHILDHOOD &
SCHOOL-AGE PROGRAMS
The Children’s Home offers a variety of programs for young children and their families,
from services focused on development and learning, to summer fun on our campus.
Here’s how we help even the youngest children overcome their challenges:
Home Visitation: Our Every Child Succeeds® home visitation service provides
support and education to first-time parents and their families, from prenatal to age 3.
Counseling, Case Management, Trauma & Day Treatment: Mental health
counseling, case management, trauma treatment and psychiatric treatment services are
available for children as young as 3 years old.
SPARK Kindergarten Readiness Program: Our home-based literacy readiness
program works with families in the John P. Parker, Carson and Mt. Airy Elementary school
neighborhoods to promote school readiness.
Full-Day Preschool: For children ages 3 to 5, our on-campus preschool provides
a safe, nurturing environment. The school has been rated a Three-Star center by
Ohio’s Department of Job and Family Services Step Up to Quality rating system, and is
accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.
After-School Enrichment: Children ages 5 to 12 enjoy a fun and educational
after-school alternative at two Cincinnati Public Schools: Midway Elementary in
Westwood and at Silverton Paideia Academy in Silverton.
Summer Day Camp: Camp-I-Can is an enriching, 10-week summer day camp for
children ages 5 to 12 on our 40-acre campus. Trained counselors provide a safe,
structured environment that incorporates learning and fun.

ALEXA.
OVERCAME
AGGRESSION.
BECAME
A MARVEL.
Looking at Alexa now, it’s hard to believe
that such a cute little girl could put anyone
on the defensive, including her mother and
her pediatrician. But when her tantrums
progressed from typical meltdowns to much
more frequent and aggressive episodes that
included spitting and hitting, professionals
became concerned for Alexa’s mental and
physical health.
Referred to The Children’s Home and admitted
to our Early Childhood Day Treatment program,
physicians and teachers were able to quickly
diagnose and treat Alexa one-on-one. First steps
were getting her to maintain control of her hands
and feet. Next, she learned to use words to
describe her frustrations and accept the answers.
Then Alexa was included in groups of her peers
as part of her re-entry into a classroom setting.
Not only did Alexa graduate from our program,
she also graduated from kindergarten. Now, she’s
a first grader in her district school. And although
she still has her “moments” like any child her age,
Alexa not only recognizes her emotions, but also
knows how adults expect her to respond. From
hysterical to self-aware, today Alexa is becoming
more … thanks to The Children’s Home.

BO.
OVERCAME
LIMITATIONS.
BECAME
A GRADUATE.
Bo has autism. Since there aren’t many
high schools available for students like
him, Bo had been attending an out-oftown boarding school. When his mother,
a Cincinnati physician, heard about
The Children’s Home high school for
children with autism spectrum disorders,
she was ecstatic. Bo could live at home
and attend a school specifically designed
for kids like him.
Meeting children’s physical and academic
needs, our high school was the perfect fit
for Bo. Here, within an environment that’s
specifically designed to reduce sensory
distractions, students find it easier to
focus. And working with teachers, speech
and language therapists experienced
with children with development
disabilities, Bo found it easier to learn.
As a result, Bo became our high school’s
first graduate and earned one of only
10 spots in the University of Cincinnati’s
highly selective Transition and Access
Program (TAP) for students with
intellectual disabilities.
From underserved to undergrad,
today Bo is becoming more …

EDUCATION SERVICES
Traditional school settings don’t work for every child. The Children’s Home offers a
range of on-campus programs to help children overcome their social, behavioral or
learning difficulties and become successful students.
Therapeutic School: Low teacher-student ratios and highly structured classes are
the hallmarks of our school for children with special educational needs, behavioral and
learning challenges in grades K through 12. When possible, it is our goal to transition
students back to their home district schools.
High School for Autism and Related Disorders: Our newest school provides
students with autism spectrum disorders a high-quality, individualized education that
supports the continued development of social and life skills in an academic setting. The
high school program meets Ohio’s content standards for curriculum and offers credits
toward a high school diploma.
Ready Set Work!: Our newest service is a five-week program designed to help people
with autism ages 14 to 21 develop skills related to job readiness and independence. This
unique program provides teens and young adults with the opportunity to think about
what kind of work they might like to do in the future, assess their skills and aptitudes,
and receive specialized training through hands-on partnerships with local businesses
including Subway Whitfield-Wean Companies, TJ Maxx and US Bank, among others.
The Olympus Center: A multi-disciplinary team provides comprehensive education
evaluations to help identify learning challenges in children, teens and adults.
We’re educating parents and professionals, too.
Helping children means helping their parents, families, teachers and caregivers. We
are proud to share our knowledge with the community through our Proven ParentingTM
classes and consultation, Teaching-Family Model (TFM) training for other organizations,
and Promoting Resilient Children consultation for child care centers and schools. We’re
also excited to introduce our newest program for school-based personnel — Stay on
Track — which provides training and consultation incorporating TFM strategies to
improve student behavior and reduce alternative placements.

BEHAVIORAL HEALTH TREATMENT
The Children’s Home is among the region’s largest providers of behavioral health services for children. Our
many therapeutic options help these children overcome their emotional and behavioral difficulties and improve
their overall functioning.
Counseling & Case Management: From mental health assessments and behavioral health counseling
to community-based psychiatric supportive treatment, our goal in this area is to help children and their
families thrive.
Day Treatment: The most intensive of our behavioral health programs provides a structured, therapeutic
environment where children work on developing relationships, modifying behaviors and building self-esteem.
Trauma Treatment: Therapists trained in trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy can help mitigate the
effects of adverse childhood experiences.
School-Based Treatment Services: Our behavioral health counselors are currently serving children in
80+ schools, teaching them new coping strategies to improve their social functioning.
Substance Use & Mental Health Programs: Our Specialized Treatment for Adolescent Recovery (STAR)
program is a community-based option for adolescents with co-occurring mental health and substance use
disorders. It’s the only program of its kind in the area.
Psychiatric Services: The Children’s Home team of psychiatrists, pediatricians and registered nurses help to
reduce, stabilize and eliminate psychiatric symptoms in children.

CALVIN.
OVERCAME
DEPRESSION.
BECAME
AN ATHLETE.
Growing up without parents took a toll on Calvin.
His grandmother did the best she could in raising
him, but with Calvin and his five younger brothers,
she had her hands full. By age 11, Calvin was an angry
child. Unable to control his emotions, he frequently
lashed out at others, both verbally and physically.
Attempts to restrain and correct his behaviors only
led to further rage and, eventually, depression.
Referred to The Children’s Home, Calvin
arrived like many — guarded and unwilling
to participate and trust. But over time,
therapists began to help him express his
feelings, a critical breakthrough. As his
communication skills improved, Calvin
also learned coping skills for times when
he felt frustrated. With increased self-control,
he began to make friends and even joined
the football team.
Today, Calvin is a role model for his brothers.
Graduating with a 3.5 GPA, he was recently awarded
a scholarship to play football at Urbana University.
From troubled to competitive, today Calvin is
becoming more … thanks to The Children’s Home.

MEET BARB TERRY
As part of the U.S. health care transformation, The Children’s Home is
broadening its impact on children by integrating the support of physical health
care with the existing behavioral health care we already provide. Leading this
new initiative is Barb Terry, our new vice president of health care integration.
Why is The Children’s Home undertaking this new endeavor?
Barb: Physical health influences mental health, and mental health
influences physical health. We want to weave together different parts
of the health care system so that children’s health is approached
in a holistic way.
Will this be a big change for The Children’s Home?
Barb: Well, we’ve been moving in this direction for several years. For
example, when Dr. Phil Lichtenstein — a pediatrician, not a psychiatrist —
joined The Children’s Home as medical director, he began to develop new
approaches to enhance the way we address the mental health needs of children.
What do you think this new service model will look like?
Barb: We’ll be working more closely with other organizations. For example,
we’re currently partnering with Crossroad Health Center and the Cincinnati
Health Department to provide behavioral health services to their clients. In
turn, we’ll screen our clients for primary health issues and refer them to those
institutions as necessary.
