In this edition you will find the results of this past 2010 State Championship Tournament recognizing the top individuals as well as our overall Team Champion. The Elite Anglers bass club won the team event with a 4-man team. Charles Bonnett is our State Champion for 2010. He finished in first with a total weight for 2 days of 33.25 lbs. All the results can be found in this issue as well as on our Web site. The 2011 BFN Central Divisional Tournament is to be hosted by Kansas and will be held on Tablerock Lake June 8-10. Once again, the host resort will be the Kimberling Inn. This is the second year in a row the tournament is on Tablerock and it should be another great event. The Missouri team finished in third place at last year’s event. Brian Maloney fished for the Central Division at the BFN National Championship in Shreveport last November. Unfortunately, he missed placing first in the Central Divisional by only 1 lb. and 9 ozs. missing the opportu- Marketing Director Chet Winans 816-588-2087 1108 Coneflower Smithville, MO 64089 [email protected] nity to move on to the Bassmaster Classic. Congratulations to Brian once again for making it that far, and I am sure that we will see him there again in the years to come. I don’t know about you but I am already tired of the cold weather and am ready for the water to warm back up. We have had a lot of snow and that means a lot of fresh water melting and going back into the lakes soon. Some of you fish all year round, especially those guys down south around Tablerock Lake. For those like me that don’t, I am sure that you are also ready to get out soon. The Sport Shows will be running through March and vendors will be hooking our anglers with new tackle and techniques. Don’t forget to support our State and National sponsors listed in this edition when making purchases this year. They have put a lot of programs out there for BFN members and we need to give them our continued support. I wish everyone a safe and prosperous 2011 season. Always be careful and courteous on the water and most of all have fun. Jim Zieger , President Secretary Dues Letter Clubs need to send in their membership as follows: 1. Federation Nation. John will fill the term for the remainder of the 2011 season. Kathy Blankenbeker will assume the role as Secretary for the remainder of the year also. Both John and Kathy have been instrumental to the success of this organization for several years, and I am glad to have them both officially on board. Jim Zieger, President Congratulations to the 2011 Missouri State Team Conservation Corner By: Shawn Veninga Tournament Fish Care Fish care is something we all play a part in and I thought this would be a good time to reflect back to our state championship and gather information together for everyone to review and learn from. With everyone’s efforts we can improve the survival rates and reduce the stress levels from our fish. 1. Fish Care begins early in the tournament day. I read several articles and most of them stressed the importance of filling your live well tanks first thing in the morning in a main lake area away from marinas and shallow water/slough areas. This will get cooler more oxygenated water into your live well, and then you will want to start aerating the water immediately so that it is ready for your first fish of the day. 2. The live well water temperature needs to be regulated throughout the day. The optimum temperature range is between 65 and 75 degrees. If the temp is getting higher than 75 then follow the rules of thumb to regulate it. One 8-lb. bag of ice or 1-gallon jug of ice will cool a 30-gallon tank about 10 degrees for 3 hours. 3. To condition the water in your live well; one inexpensive way to maintain electrolyte balance and reduce stress levels is to add 1/3 cup of noniodized salt per 5 gallons. 4. Drain half of the live well water every 3 hours and refill with fresh water to remove waste byproducts like ammonia and carbon dioxide. 5. Keep your aerators running all day. 6. Learn to Fizz a fish – BASS supports the side approach, use a 16-18 gauge hypodermic needle that is 1½ - 2 inches long. Take a look at this You Tube video for further instructions: http://www.youtube.com/watc h?v=pEeQrsHcwf8&feature=youtube_gdata_player 7. When bringing fish to the weigh-in tanks, keep in mind that fish in a weigh-in bag have only 3 minutes of oxygen before their body starts to stress out. As soon as you get to the tanks it is essential to get fresh oxygenated water into your bag. Please don’t just set the bag in the tank – you have to let some of that treated and oxygenated water in!!!! 8. Always use the official weigh-in bags. The only way to regulate how many anglers are at the weigh-in tanks is by limiting the number of bags. As a whole, the weigh-ins went well in 2010. However, there will be things that I will be working on this year to improve the efficiency of our weigh-in lines and tanks. Please keep these tips in mind and pass them on to other anglers. We all need to work together so that we can continue to enjoy the sport forever. I cannot wait to see ya on the water!! Shawn M. First let’s get the bad news out of the way. The following statement was read to me by Harvey Richards, MSHSAA assistant. “The MSHSAA board of directors recognizes the many contributions and suggestions made by the advisory committees and member schools. However the board of directors is concerned by the current economic situation faced by all other member schools at this time. Because of this some of the items that were to be placed on the annual questionnaire have been withdrawn due to the additional cost that they may place on member schools. Those items will be revisited at a later date. Therefore any thing that had to do with expansion did not make the questionnaire or will not make the ballot this cycle.” The good news. Harvey also said MSHSAA knows our group has went beyond and above what any other organization would have done to get a sport under the MSHSAA umbrella and they know the financial support we would give. If money starts flowing back into the schools, MSHSAA will reconsider our proposal and it will go straight to the ballot without having to be discussed at the area meeting. So it looks like we have another year to work on this. Also, there is no reason why schools who still want to start a fishing program can’t still put something together as Jim Huson has done at Republic. Let’s see if we can take that approach so we will be ahead of the game when MSHSAA decides to put our proposal on the ballot. An agreement in principle was announced in August by ESPN and the transaction was completed Monday. BASS is the largest membership organization of bass anglers in the U.S. with more than 500,000 members. It was purchased by ESPN in 2001 and includes several media platforms, including three magazines and a popular Web site. The investor group is a powerful combination of business acumen and superior knowledge of the outdoors industry. With the completion of the transaction, the purchasing party assumes ownership of BASS and will run the Celebration, Fla.,-based company. As part of the agreement, ESPN will continue to air BASS core television programming assets - the Bassmaster Elite Series and Bassmaster Classic - for multiple years. “We are proud of our employees’ contribution to BASS this past decade and we are pleased to continue ESPN’s association going forward,” said George Bodenheimer, co-chairman, Disney Media Networks and president, ESPN. Inc. “Under the direction of Don Logan, Jerry McKinnis and Jim Copeland, BASS will be well positioned to serve anglers’ interests for many years to come.” Investor and outdoorsman McKinnis has a long and rich history with ESPN as the host of the network’s second longestrunning show, The Fishin’ Hole, which aired from 1980 until 2007. McKinnis, who has been involved in outdoors television since hosting a fishing show for KATV in Little Rock, Ark., in 1964, has developed a special connection with outdoorsman and anglers with his inno- vative programming and accessibility. “This is a dream come true,” said McKinnis. “I’m so excited to begin working with BASS’ passionate membership base on developing an even more powerful organization.” Retired Time Inc., executive and avid angler Logan at one time oversaw Time Inc., America Online, Time Warner Cable and the Time Warner Book Group before his retirement from the media giant in 2005. Logan’s varied experience in the media industry set up well for guiding a complex brand that boasts several multimedia platforms. “With a strong multimedia portfolio, BASS is well positioned to serve fans with innovative content,” said Logan. “We are focused on maintaining BASS’ leadership position in the industry.” Georgia native Copeland retired as U.S. and Global CEO of international financial services firm Deloitte in 2003 and currently serves on the board of directors of three Fortune 500 companies. The investor group has put a premium on focusing on issues that resonate at a grassroots level. BASS will continue to spearhead positive, progressive change on issues related to conservation and resource management. BASS was founded in 1968 by Ray Scott. About BASS For more than 40 years, BASS has served as the authority on bass fishing. The organization advances the sport through advocacy, outreach and its expansive tournament structure while connecting directly with the passionate community of bass anglers through its Bassmaster media vehicles. The Bassmaster brand and its multimedia platforms are guided by a mission to serve all fishing fans. Through Missouri B.A.S.S. Federation Nation News its industry-leading publications Bassmaster Magazine, BASS Times and Fishing Tackle Retailer; comprehensive Web properties in Bassmaster.com, BASSInsider.com and ESPN2 television programming, Bassmaster provides rich, leading-edge content true to the lifestyle. MAIL APPLICATIONS TO: Missouri B.A.S.S. Federation Nation • 3405 NW Nautical Ct. • Blue Springs, MO 64015 Missouri B.A.S.S. Federation Nation News 14 Missouri “No Cull” Rule The “no cull” rule as it relates to summer black bass tournaments was put in place to minimize the amount of mortality that occurs when bass undergo stress from being held in a live well for extended periods of time, followed by stress from the weigh-in procedures. Numerous research tournaments, including two held in Missouri, indicate that even though most fish may swim away from a weigh-in, the delayed mortality rate of tournament bass during the summer months is high. A study conducted in 2003 at Pomme de Terre resulted in a 50 percent mortality rate over a 7-day holding period. In comparison, a group of fish collected as controls with electrofishing gear, and held in the same pens for 7 days, experienced only 3 percent mortality. The regulations state that a fish is taken into possession if it is not released unharmed immediately. Basically, once a black bass enters a live well, is put on a stringer, or in a fish basket, it is in your possession and part of your daily limit, whether you eventually release it or not. During July and August, the no cull rule allows you to catch, and retain, a maximum of 6 “individual” legal bass during a tournament day (just like nontournament black bass fishermen), even though you are only allowed 5 fish at the weigh-in. So, once you have placed 6 legal bass in your live well, you are done harvesting for the day. If, for example, you have five 3-lb. fish in your live well, and you catch a 6-lb. fish, you can actually “cull” one of the smaller fish to get down to your 5-fish tournament limit. At this point you have reached your daily limit and are done harvesting fish, although you may continue to catch and release for fun. For arguments sake, let’s say that you continue to catch and immediately release bass while waiting for weigh-in time, and you land a 10-pounder. You CANNOT keep this fish since you have already reached your daily limit of 6 (the 5 bass in your live well plus the small legal bass you had in your possession but culled with a larger bass). In comparison, from September through June, you may catch, and replace, smaller legal fish with larger fish throughout the day, provided that you do not exceed 6 fish in your live well at any time. The exact wording of this rule can be found on page 49 (Section E, Rule 3 CSR 10-6.405) of the Wildlife code issued March 1, 2010. Reporter’s Notebook: B.A.S.S. is back; New digs; Open registration runs wide open; Russ Lane’s new ride is a Phoenix; Women in the Opens; and … Up next B.A.S.S. is back: The “dots” are returning to the name and products of the organization that have been serving bass anglers worldwide for more than 40 years. The subtle name change from BASS to B.A.S.S. is an affirmation of the company’s grass roots, said Jerry McKinnis, who with Don Logan and Jim Copeland acquired B.A.S.S. from ESPN on Nov. 1. “We want to get this back to being a friendlier organization, a we’re-here-to-do-whatever-weneed-to-do-to-make-you-happy organization,” McKinnis said. “To me, that’s what those dots mean. It means we’re back to where we used to be a long time ago … to where we make everybody feel like this is a very warm and fuzzy group of new owners who want to know about the members.” Originally the company was the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society, the name founder Ray Scott created for his fledgling startup in 1968. As the company grew, the abbreviation B.A.S.S., spelled with periods and all capital letters, was adopted. After ESPN bought the company in 2001, the periods were removed during a broad-based rebranding campaign. Many Federation Nation clubs and state organizations, however, retained the periods in their official names and on patches. “The Federation Nation is a big part of what I’m talking about,” McKinnis said. “They kind of feel like they’ve been forsaken — and by that, I don’t mean to be disparaging about ESPN, because ESPN was wonderful, but they were awfully big folks to be getting down with the Federation Nation and making them feel important.” The name change will be reflected in all B.A.S.S. products. “We’re not going to go chucking all of our letterheads and so on, but over time we’ll have everything changed back to B.A.S.S. — with dots,” he said. New digs: Almost simultaneously with the Nov. 1 purchase from ESPN, B.A.S.S. moved to new quarters just down the street from its former offices. The new address is 1170 Celebration Blvd., Suite 200, Celebration, FL 34747. B.A.S.S. offices had been located in a Celebration property that also housed several operations of Disney, ESPN’s parent company. 2010 B.A.S.S. Equally impressive advances have also occurred in “smart” trolling motor technology and, as a result, anglers should have a better appreciation for the tracking capabilities of MotorGuide’s new PTSv Digital Tracking motors. ® MotorGuide PTSv trolling motors offer effortless electric steering and unmatched reliability as a result of MotorGuide’s new proprietary digital technology. But what really puts these motors in a category all by themselves is their ability to “track” underwater features like no manually operated motor can. PTSv stands for “Pinpoint Tracking System 5” and this new series utilizes third-generation Pinpoint‘ “smart” electronics featuring five built-in transducers to afford hands-free, automatic tracking of shorelines, creek channels and depth contours. Pinpoint pioneered tracking-motor technology and introduced the first such model in 1993. Located in the motor’s nose are two 8-degree transducers for shoreline-reading functions and three 20-degree transducers to read contour break-lines. The Digital Tracking Module located in the motor’s head translates the information from the transducers and feeds it to the Digital Steering Module for accurate and effortless automatic steering along programmed depths and contours according to the operator’s selections. The PTSv’s head has a 128 x 64 pixel LCD Display for user convenience that shows depth information, water surface temperature and motor status. Motor operation and function-keys are user-friendly and easy to learn. Choices include Depth Track, Shore Track and Creek Track modes, any of which allows the angler to concentrate all efforts on fishing, not on running the trolling motor. The PTSv features MotorGuide’s proven high speed, electric-steering system – affording a 360-degree steering radius in less than two seconds. The user can override tracking functions at any time, or steer manually, by simply engaging the traditional low profile, rocker-style foot pedal with a heel to toe steering motion. PTSv Digital Tracking motors can also be networked with Pinpoint Sonar Displays. This means the trolling motor can be controlled through Sonar Display function keys, allowing changes from any network Sonar Display located anywhere in the boat. It’s an application particularly attractive for fishing guides, walleye anglers and others who like trolling motor control from the console area. The PTSv is part of MotorGuide’s new Digital Advantage line of trolling motors. MotorGuide is the first trolling motor company to use patented, digital designs for greatly enhanced trolling motor performance and reliability. The new modular design also affords repeatable manufacturing consistency and that is a direct benefit to the end user because it means better quality control and, therefore, higher quality trolling motors as a result. Most of the improvements are internal and can’t be seen. One resulting improvement also can’t be heard. MotorGuide’s director of marketing, Dallas Hodges, said field reports indicate the PTSv is the quietest trolling motor the company has ever built. “I have been using the PTSv for some time now and I am truly impressed with how quiet this motor is,” Hodges said. “It is amazingly quiet. Much of that comes from the benefits of the new digital design, but I’m confident the new Machete III™ prop is also a contributing factor to its silent operation,” he said. The new Machete III prop, featuring a tapered hub, will come standard on most MotorGuide 2004 models being introduced this summer. It will also be available as a replacement prop. MotorGuide’s Digital Advantage system uses digital’s cleaner, crisper communication processes. Not only does digital eliminate sonar interference, it also eliminates the problematic analog designs responsible for most of the failures common to variable speed trolling motors. Digital’s modular design allows electronic parts to be totally encapsulated, offering protection against moisture, shock and vibration. And if service attention should ever be necessary, the simple modular design makes repairs easier and faster. MotorGuide PTSv Digital Tracking motors come in two models – a 24-volt, 82-pound thrust version, and a 36-volt, 105-pound thrust model. Both models are available in shaft lengths of 45-inch, 50-inch and 60-inch. All come on MotorGuide’s new Gator Spring mounts, with the 60-inch shaft versions coming on the Gator Spring XL. These mounts have two springs that absorb the brunt of an underwater collision by “giving” to protect the shaft, and then returning to the normal “run” position. PTSv motors retail between $1,499 and $1,799, depending on model and shaft length. Without a doubt, anglers using the new PTSv will benefit from MotorGuide’s new Digital Advantage. Federation Nation News 26 CFM Celebrates 75 Years Of Citizen Leadership Many members of the Missouri BASS Federation Nation may not know that MO Bass is affiliated with the Conservation Federation of Missouri. You are – and CFM appreciates it! CFM represents broad outdoor interests. Just within the fishing world, we have affiliated organizations with specific interests in trout, muskies, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass and more. Add those interests to CFM’s affiliated clubs with interests in hunting, hiking, boating, trapping, parks, prairies, forests, big rivers, Ozark streams, urban open space and shooting sports, and soon you begin to paint a complete picture of Missouri’s great outdoors. By uniting diverse interests, CFM has protected the things we all value most – clean water, clean air, healthy habitat, abundant fish and wildlife and a wide variety of opportunities for outdoor recreation. CFM has been a prominent and effective voice at the Missouri General Assembly, with Congress and all Missouri and federal fish, wildlife and natural resource conservation agencies. Our strength comes from the diversity of our interests and the common ground that unites us. On CFM’s 75th anniversary it’s worth taking a moment to reflect on our history. It’s the story of citizens taking control of our outdoor resources, and it’s a legacy that continues with great relevance today. Called to action by the deplorable state of Missouri’s fish, wildlife and forest resources, business and community leaders such as E. Sydney Stephens, Roland M. Hoerr, Edward K. Love, J.T. Montgomery and many more – 75 in all at the first meeting in 1935 – forever changed the landscape of our great state. They became the Conservation Federation’s founders, as well as the authors and promoters of the constitutional amendment campaign that established Missouri’s groundbreaking conservation law. That law, a p p r ove d in 1936 as Proposition No. 4, removed politics from wildlife regulation by establishing a bipartisan citizen commission with executive, regulatory and fiscal authority to head a permanent department that would operate in accordance with sound biological principles. The success of Proposition No. 4 set the stage for an approach to conservation where citizen conservationists would be required to provide leadership. However, that leadership responsibility was not limited to the handful of talented folks that would volunteer their time to serve on the Conservation Commission. Working through CFM, ordinary folks have successfully secured dedicated funding for conservation, parks and soils, limited dams on our Ozark streams, passed the Missouri Clean Water Act, and initiated innovative programs such as Stream Teams, Operation Game Thief, Share the Harvest, Conservation Leadership Corps and many more. The tangible result of this work can be seen across Missouri in our forests, wetlands and prairies, and in our rivers, lakes and streams. If you are not already a dues paying member of CFM, please consider joining today! CMF needs your support! Sign up online at www. confedmo.org or call the Conservation Federation’s office at 1-800575-2322. You’ll receive CFM’s magazine, Missouri Wildlife, six times per year, and will be helping to support an organization that is dedicated to conserving Missouri’s natural resources and protecting our outdoor heritage. 27 The TheOfficial OfficialAerators Aerator Ofof MOBASS LCI Fishing Derbies KeepAlive! The tournament will be held on Pomme de Terre Lake on Sunday April 10, 2011. Tournament hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. going out of the Hermitage State Park Ramp. Entry forms are available at www.mobass.com and donations can be made out to the Missouri B.A.S.S. Federation Nation and sent to me at the following address. We look forward to seeing everyone in April. B.A.S.S. Wishes. Jim Zieger, President Missouri B.A.S.S.
