Chairperson’s Column
The Summer Evening Walks programme is now well under way and we are
finalising the weekends away Programme for September - December, based on
what was suggested at the previous Outdoor Planning evening.
It will soon be time to start planning the weekends away for 2017, so we are
holding an Outdoor Planning meeting on Tuesday 24th May. This will plan the
first half of 2017 plus August Bank Holiday 2017. If you have any suggestions
for weekends away or other trips, please bring them along or email them to me
in advance. All offers to organise weekends away will be gratefully received.
The next Barnet YHA Group Committee Meeting will be held mid June.
If you have any comments or issue to raise, please see the Chairperson or any
Committee member.
The deadline for articles for the next edition of Footprint is Tuesday 31st
May. Please email your articles to the Editor either as an attachment or you can
write the text directly in the email. If you send photos, please attach no more
than two large photos to each email. You can send several emails if you like.

Hertfordshire Walking Festival
The day walk on Sunday 22nd
May, which I am organising is part of
the first ever Hertfordshire Walking
Festival that takes place throughout
May 2016. This is a programme of
75 guided walks from 1 - 12 miles
throughout Hertfordshire. You can

printed booklet on the Group Notice Board in the Scout Hut.
As well as our own Group members, this walk will be open to a maximum of 15 members of the public
who have to sign up on the Walks

miles, it may not get fully booked.

Blaxhall Weekend
Fri 15th – Sun 17th April
We decided on a trip to Orford
Ness a former top secret military and
weapons testing site between, 19131993. The base made a vital contribution to the winning of World
War I, II and the Cold War. It is
the only complete nuclear weapons
test site open to visitors thanks to
the National Trust who purchased
the whole site in 1993, and it was
opened to the Public in 1995 and is
now a nature reserve with some of
the Military Buildings open.
We arrived at Orford Quay in
good time, As the National Trust office was not open till 9.50am a walk
along the coast was called for, Back
at the quay we paid our £9 ferry and
admission fee to the NT. We were
booked on the 10am ferry which
only holds 12, a short boat trip
across to the Ness. On arrival we
were given a short pep talk and were
informed to keep to the red path
around the Ness and not to stray as
some unexploded devices may still
exist in the shingle. The Ferries back
to Orford Quay are every 20mins
up to 2pm, the next and last ferry
is at 5pm. It took us about 3.5hrs to
go around the site l and around the
buildings open to the public plenty of photos and information. The
pagodas (site of the Atomic research
area) which you can see from the
coast were not open. Assess is available via a pre booked all day guided
tours (£22) booking essential.
Back at Orford we drove back to
the Hostel, had a late lunch then a
2.5 mile walk via roads. A good days
out thanks to Bob for suggesting it.

Blaxhall Weekend, Suffolk, 16-17 May2016
Organisers: Val and Maja
Attending: Val, Maja, Bob, Reg, Laurence, Linda,
Karen and Annie. Sadly Claire S. had to work and so
couldn’t join us.
The forecast showed 97-100% chance of rain for
Saturday, and slightly less for Sunday. The bright and
modern Blaxhall YHA is a former school on the edge of
Blaxhall Heath.
We drove through the pretty village of Snape, home
of the Snape Maltings concert hall, to Thorpeness.
While Thorpeness look deceptively ancient, most of
its halls and cottages were conceived around 1910 by
the Ogilvie family as a fairytale holiday hamlet for their
friends.
Dinner was at the Lion pub in Little Glemham, 2
miles from the hostel.
Sunday was brighter, and we set out from the NW
of Bromeswell on the Deben estuary. Bob led us across
the railway, unexpectedly through a junk yard and, in
contrast, into St Mary’s churchyard in Ufford, a village
of perfect lawns and thatched cottages. We continued
through the St Audry’s estate, once a workhouse, then a
psychiatric hospital, which closed in 1993, and is now
converted into residences – the mortuary included!
Passing the estate Lodge we came to the outskirts
of Melton and back onto the estuary path, noticing
several converted WWII boats. Lunch was on the bank
opposite the NT’s Sutton Hoo, a 1,400 year-old AngloSaxon burial site. We continued into Woodbridge for a
coffee break in a sun-drenched courtyard, then to the
Quayside, past the elegant working Tide Mill, and back
along the River to the cars.
The walk snaked round the large Meare, down quirky
village lanes and along the deserted pebble beach. We
observed the X-band radar used to monitor coastal

While the trails were very muddy, we were celebrating
unexpectedly good weather, and the verdant banks of
the Hundred River dotted with primroses, cowslips,
and bluebells. After 4-5 miles we re-entered Thorpeness,
its renowned white windmill and the curious 70-foot

After lunch (in the cars due to a heavy downpour) we
headed to Aldeburgh, southwards down the coast, where
Maja was keen to visit a Suffolk tea shop. We pottered
along the sea front, enjoying the varied architecture,
including the 16th Century timber-framed Moot Hall.

Kensington was once a separate village to the City of London frequented by royalty to escape the London smogs and mists. It really is impressive being able to leave the hustle and

streets of Kensington Village - much quieter than Barnet even. During the walk we pass old
village inns and stables, see (from the ground) the largest roof top terrace in Europe and

Hertfordshire. It was created in 1995 as part of the National Trust’s Centenary celebrations. It
uses public rights of way and a few permissive paths to closely follow the edges of the estate.
Much of the walk is through beautiful beech woods so typical of the Chilterns, with a few
sections through fields for variety, and the highlight of the walk is probably Ivinghoe Beacon,
with its extensive views over the Vale of Aylesbury and towards Dunstable Downs.
The walk will be at a moderate pace and should take about 8 hours. The cafe is open from
