Manzanillo
Manzanillo Beautiful port who’s growth has benefited the travel industry with the construction of important hotel complexes, as well as top level golf courses. The destination has two main áreas, Downtown where commercial areas are located, and the hotel zone, situated in the Peninsula of Santiago, dividing the two bays of this tourist destination: Manzanillo (in the south) and Santiago (in the north). The Sailfish Sculpture by the Mexican artist Sebastián stands out splendidly at the end of the boardwalk in the “heart” of the city. This work of art does justice to the harbor, which is considered as the “Sailfish Capital of the World”. Its tranquil beaches, like La Audiencia and San Pedrito, offer relaxation and a chance to dream, while its open beaches, like Campos and Olas Altas, are an invitation to surf and live to the extreme. After the conquest, the Spanish made incursions into the region and 1527, Alvaro de Saavedra arrived in Manzanillo and named it the Bay of Santiago de la Buena Esperanza. Hernan Cortes planned the conquest of the Baja California Peninsula from here and it is where numerous brigantines departed form eastern lands. During the 16th century, the Spanish took advantage of the geographical features of the bay and established a port and the first shipyard in the Americas. The harbor was named Manzanillo in 1825, after the native flower of the area. Back in 1873, it was granted the city status and was officially recognized as a port in 1908, due to its rail connection with the city of Guadalajara.
