Message
of The President
Dear Members, Students and Friends,
At this time of the year, I am pleased to wish you and your family a very Happy Christmas and New
Year. I hope 2014 would bring you much satisfaction and pleasure in learning with Alliance
Française de Kotte.
I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the French and Sri Lankan authorities as well as our
partners and friends, companies, associations and certain individuals, who have always
supported us and for all the help shown to us in 2013. I also whish to thank all the Alliance
Française staff for being so engaged and dedicated and thus contributed to the success of our
activities on all fronts. I am pleased to say that we have set an attendance record for our courses
this last quarter of the year with over 550 students’ enrolments.
Between November 2013 and January 2014, we have prepared for you a program of sustained
and varied activities where I note especially, two strengths with the visit to Sri Lanka by two French
artists. This November, with the presentation of filmmaker William Cally, a native of Reunion
Island and, in January, with the performance at the Contemporary Art Biennale of Colombo with
the urban artist Olivier Grossetête.
William Cally who will introduce his film "Elie, Blacksmith of Freedom", will not only speak of his
work as a filmmaker, but also on a French territory little known to the Sri Lankan public: Reunion
Island which like Sri Lanka is an island in the Indian Ocean and, moreover, the closest part of
France.
Olivier Grossetête meanwhile is an important artist of the new French contemporary art. His work
is truly a spectacular performance that should make quite an impression and be without doubt
the highlight of the next Contemporary Art Biennale in Colombo.

offers 4 terms per year, a variety of regular and special
classes in French using communicative and interactive
approach and the latest textbooks and audiovisual aids.

subtitled movies, audio books on French literature and informative online
resources.
The library-cum-resource centre is particularly meant for students of French
language and we are happy to guide them to choose according to their level in
French, a suitable document to read, watch or listen.

A member can borrow at a time 2 books or two magazines for a period of 2 weeks

Coproduced by Kapali Studios and France Television, “Elie, Blacksmith of
Freedom”, a documentary movie, refers to an exceptional event, unique
in the history of Reunion Island.
On November 8, 1811, in the small village of Saint-Leu, an uprising of
400 slaves took place, which managed to shake the foundations of the
colonial system even if only for a few days before being betrayed and
ruthlessly repressed by local authorities.
Never before had such an event occurred since the 1724
implementation of the Code Noir (Black Code) in Bourbon Island – the
former name of Reunion Island. On the curse of time, the echoes of this
rebellion and the aura of the leaders were carefully and consciously
erased by colonial chroniclers. The film tries to revive the memory of all
those human beings who defended the worthiest of causes: their
freedom.

Saint-Leu revolt, wrote
the script of “Elie,
Blacksmith of Freedom”.
Thanks to him, the film
gains in historical
precisions, giving more depth and shape to the narration. Based on
interviews with a number of historians and scholars, it is illustrated with
superb fictional sequences, which required precise and thorough historical reconstruction and costume re-creation, the first in the
genre in and about Reunion Island. The shooting of those fictional sequences was even marked by a rare and outstanding osmosis
between the crew members and the actors. The extras, often chosen for their Saint-Leu ascendancy and their possible genealogical
links with the real rebels of 1811, infused the atmosphere with their energy and intense emotion.
The first film screening of “Elie, Blacksmith of Freedom” took place in Saint-Leu itself on November 8, 2011, to celebrate the
bicentenary of the insurrection.
William Cally, born in 1977 in Saint-Denis, Reunion Island, has a doctorate in
French and Comparative Literature. Early passionate for writing, he was awarded the
"University Price for Novel " in Reunion Island in 1997 and in 2003 and the "Price of the
Indian Ocean Novel" in 2000 and 2005. He inaugurated a new literary genre called the
“bébètik” or fantastic Creole.
Beside, he has started screen writing and film making, actively participating in the
emergence of a young cinema of the Reunion with short fictions and documentary-fiction
films.
His work has a deep cultural, societal and historical features related to his native island.

REUNION ISLAND
A French Overseas Department

Reunion Island is a French Overseas Department situated
in the Indian Ocean between Madagascar and Mauritius
islands. It has a tropical climate, cool and dry from May to
November, and hot and rainy from November to April.
Highly volcanic, the island covers over 2,500 square kilometers (970 sqm) and is located above a hotspot in the Earth's crust. One
volcano in particular, the “Piton de la Fournaise” (Peak of blazing fire), is still very active and has erupted more than 100 times since
1640 and is under constant monitoring. It most recently erupted in 2010.
Reunion Island has a population of around 850.000 inhabitants. There is
no indigenous people on the island as it was initially deserted. All of the
ethnic groups comprising the island today are immigrant populations that
have come to Reunion over the centuries. These populations mainly from
African, Indian, European, Malagasy and Chinese origin have mixed in a
melting pot very early on in the history of the island (indeed first settlers
married women from Madagascar and of Indo-Portuguese heritage)
resulting in a majority population of mixed origin belonging to a "Creole"
culture speaking a Reunion Creole although French is the official
language. According to this cultural mix, there are different religions
represented especially Roman Catholicism, Hinduism, Islam, Chinese folk
religion, Buddhism.
Sugar was traditionally the chief agricultural product and export, and tourism is now an important source of income. The GDP per
capita about 25,000 US dollars at market exchange rates is
the highest in Africa.
The first European discovery of the area was made around
1507 by Portuguese explorers. France officially claimed
the island in 1642, when it deported a dozen mutineers to
the island from the nearby Madagascar. The convicts were
returned to France several years later and, in 1649, the
island was named “Île Bourbon” after the French royal
family. Colonization started in 1665, when the French East
India Company sent the first twenty settlers. "Reunion"
was the name given for the first time to the island in 1793
by a decree of the French Revolution after the fall of the
monarchy in France.
From the 17th to the 19th centuries, French immigration
supplemented by influxes of Africans, Chinese, Malays and Indians gave
the island its ethnic mix. Starting from 1690, most of the immigrants
from outside Europe were enslaved until 20 December 1848, date
when slavery was abolished, which is a celebrated holiday in Reunion
Island nowadays.
Emmanuelle Boutier is currently the Director of
Alliance française de Malé in the Maldives; she has
been living in Reunion Island since the age of 9.

EUROPEAN ROMANTICISM

In about one hour, thanks to an audiovisual
presentation with great music extracts,
pictures, musicological explanations, Alain
Rechner will make us discover Franz Liszt,
one of the most talented western classical
musician and composer.
Franz Liszt (1811-1886) was the most European of romantic musicians of the 19th century. He
became well reputed in Europe for his virtuosic skills as a pianist. He was said by his contemporaries to
have been the most technically advanced pianist of his age, and in the 1840s he was considered to be
perhaps the greatest pianist of all time. But Liszt was also a well-known and influential composer, piano
teacher and conductor and happened to be a benefactor to other composers like Richard Wagner,
Hector Berlioz, Camille Saint-Saëns, Edvard Grieg or Alexander Borodin.
Lisztomanias International is a Society founded in 2012 in Paris with the aim to promote Liszt's spirit,
which is imagination, generosity, humanism, romanticism, adventure, European ideal - indeed a man of
high ideal and faith - and to share with a large public the beauty of the musical heritage of Liszt as a pianist,
a composer, and an European artist of his time. One project is also to set up the only opera he wrote in his
youth Don Sanche of the Castle of Love. This project is to re-create the unique Liszt opera performed in
Paris Royal Opera in the year 1825 (Liszt was only 14 years old). The aim is to put up a performance with
young musicians and singers, for a very large public, in Hungary and France, and later in India, China,
Russia, Japan and eventually in Sri Lanka. Last but not east, Lisztomanias International Association plans to
launch a new international festival: The Euro-Asia Romantic Music International Festival aimed at young artists, which will take
place in Asia every year, each time in a different country.
Alain Rechner currently President of the Lisztomanias International Association, is the founding Director of
Neemrana France, an association dedicated to the art and culture, especially music - particularly oriented voice
and piano - through the promotion of artists, organizing concerts, tours, opera productions, training programs,
exhibitions and conferences. A teacher by profession, Alain Rechner has worked several years in China and in India.

130 YEARS ALLIANCE FRANCAISE
In 2013, we celebrate 130 years of Alliance Française; the
exhibition proposed focuses on the great personalities who
initiated Alliance Française and gave ground to its universal
values of humanism and cultural diversity. Because of their
ingenious ideas and their open-minded sense, they opened the
way to an immense network today with about 500,000 students
learning French in 135 countries at one of the 1016 settlements,
which runs under Alliance Française's flag.
The very first Alliance Française was created in Paris in July 1883 by a group of eminent
men, including the scientist Louis Pasteur, the diplomat Ferdinand de Lesseps, the writers
Jules Verne and Ernest Renan, and the publisher Armand Colin.
Alliance Française is present in Sri Lanka since 1955 where it opened in Colombo. Since then, 4 other Alliance Française
have been created: in Kandy (1967), in Matara (1997), in Jaffna (2004), in Malé (2006) and in Galle as an annexe of Matara
(2007). In 2012, we registered 5,000 students in our Sri Lankan Maldivian network.

This year, Alliance Française de
Kotte in Colombo invites you to

Photography Contest
organized by the Fondation
Alliance Française in Paris. The
main aim of this competition is
to ca p t u re p h o to g ra p h s
highlighting the theme “On
joue sur la Terre – We're playing
on earth”. Hence, to show how
we “play” in all senses of the
word, in multiple social and
cultural occasions.
Games are a powerful expression of human nature and of the diversity of cultures. The
remains of the oldest civilizations still have traces of games, some of which were of a
sacred nature. Since then, man has not stopped playing. The extraordinary diversity of
games meets a variety of needs and emotions as we play for fun, to pass the time, but
also to learn, to overcome fears and ultimately to earn money.
The competition is organized in two rounds. First of all, an exhibition of the best 20
photos selected by a local jury composed by photographs and personalities will be held
on Thursday 19th of December in Alliance Française de Kotte in Colombo. During the
exhibition, the public will vote for their favorite photo. Result will be announced at the
end of the evening.
Then, the best winner's name and his/her two selected photographs will be sent to the
Fondation Alliance Française in Paris where another jury will analyze those photos
during a second round of selections gathering pictures from all over the world. The
winner will be offered a week in Paris and an individual exhibition.

“Making History”
Colombo Arts Festival
Standard Chartered Colomboscope Festival is organized for the second
consecutive year in collaboration with Goethe Institute, British Council.
A framework for open discourse and broaden perspectives, artistic
thoughts and intellectual analysis, through roundtables, panel
conversations, expert discussions, presentations and lectures, readings,
poetry and music performances, the festival aims to create spaces for
expression and creation and reflect the current trend of interdisciplinary
exploration in the arts.
2014's theme "Making History" is shared with the Colombo Art Biennale.
This central concept will not only focus on Sri Lanka, it will draw parallels
and will allude to it occasionally. Some of the broad topics under
consideration are: language and history; social media and real-time
history making; physical spaces and myth building; presentation,
representation and re-presentation; differences between memory and
remembrance; music, poetry, film and historical, socio-political epics;
insider/outsider narratives; lost narratives, forgotten voices.
Contemporary literature, film, dance, theatre, gourmet breakfasts, art
exhibitions and many other musical and cinematographic activities are
meant to attract various levels of visitors, generally connected to other
scenes. In 2012, with the theme of “Identities”, the festival attracted
2,200 visitors.

CONTEMPORARY
DANCE WORSHOP
by Seneka Abeyratne
In partnership with the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Seneka
Abeyratne will conduct a series of workshops on contemporary dance.
This program will consist of a two-hour class on a weekly basis, from
December 2013 to June 2014.
About twenty students are expected to participate in this program. The classes will be based on a blend of Martha Graham and
Merce Cunningham techniques.
Students participating in this dance program
will have the opportunity to perform at the next
French Spring Festival in June 2014.
Martha Graham
Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham (both
deceased) were pioneers of contemporary
dance in the United States. Their techniques
continue to influence contemporary dance
across the globe. There is some overlapping
between the two styles as Cunningham studied
under Graham before establishing his own
school.
Merce Cunningham
Seneka Abeyratne is a freelance contemporary dance choreographer with twelve years of ballet training
at the Deanna School of Dancing, Colombo. He has conducted several workshops on contemporary dance in
collaboration with the Nelung Arts Center, the Goethe Institute and the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute.

For the third time, Colombo will open his Contemporary Art Biennale in January 2014 (CAB 14). During the 10 day long CAB14
festival, more than 8 000 visitors are awaited to admire works produced by Sri Lanka's most recognized and emerging artists, as well
as artists from Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, England, France, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Scotland.
In a post civil conflict context, Sri Lankan creation and dissemination framework is now literally exploding: Art is more than ever a
mean of action and dialog, promoting reconciliation. “Making History”, the theme chosen, is aimed to lead an enquiry into
contemporary aesthetic experience from a time span point of view.

and in our modernity, refers to parallel representations of cultures, events, moments and emotions. Our bodies are

of the implications of history on the human being as well as the human condition.”

Monumental installation
Poetry, Dreams, Childhood, Diversion, Recovery, Derision are key words for Olivier Grossetête's art works. As he did once already
during his last project "Metamorphosis" in the European Capital of Culture 2013, Marseille, he will now use Colombo city for
experimentation and creations.
His work is built around recovery and diversion of cardboard and
papers in a try to switch these petty materials into a world of fiction and
dreams thanks to a monumental installation. Furthermore, by inviting
public to participate actively to the genesis of the art piece, Olivier
Grossetête makes contemporary visual art accessible to a large number
and transforms it into a popular performance and experience.
Olivier Grossetête is a French visual artist born in 1973. He lives and
works in Marseille, France. He is a graduate of the Ecole Régionale des
Beaux Arts de Valence. From the very beginning, he is engaged in a
personal reflection on the links between idea and action, work and
context, volume and materials. He is literally exploring the urban space
while questioning architecture and symbolism. In 2000, he directed a
short film that featured a paper boat referring to famous film scenes. At
the same time, performance, movie and object, this short-film became
the cornerstone of Olivier Grossetête's poetical approach based on the
ephemeral nature of one performance and its memory tracks.
Since 2002, Olivier Grossetête has developed collective and
monumental constructions with the idea that they become
self-sufficient in respect of the existing architecture. The
preparation workshops of the buildings where the public
comes to give a hand then become an integral part of the
work, creating a collective energy that contaminates the
audience. Several cardboard monumental buildings are
raised with the arm strength of hundreds of participants.
From 2011, Oliver Grossetête was invited to create
ephemeral and monumental structures in several cities in
France and Europe (Manchester, Glasgow, Kodice). He is
recognized as one of the most interesting Urban artists of the
moment.

Despite having lost his job, Michel lives happily with Marie-Claire. These two have been
together for thirty years. They have very close friends. They are proud of their union and
political struggles. This happiness is deeply affected when two young armed and masked men
beat them, tie them up, tear off their wedding rings, and flee with their credit cards. Their
distress is even more brutal when they learn that this wild attack was organized by one of the
young co-workers just laid off with Michel. The story takes its inspiration from the poem “Les
Pauvres Gens” [The Poor People] one of the best known of Victor Hugo's poems.

The Painting (Le Tableau) by Jean François Laguionie (2011) – 76’
A château, flowering gardens, a threatening forest, that is what, for mysterious reasons, a
Painter has left incomplete. Three kinds of characters live in this painting: the Toupins, who are
entirely painted, the Pafinis, who lack a few colours, and the Reufs, who are only sketches.
Considering themselves superior, the Toupins take over power, chase the Pafinis from the
château, and enslave the Reufs. Convinced that only the Painter can restore harmony by
finishing the painting, three characters, Ramo, Lola, and Plume, each of them member of one
of the three communities, decided to go on search for him.
The movie’s designs include homage to painters such as Marc Chagall, Amedeo Modigliani,
Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. The film was animated in digital 3D.
