NEWS @ MANGALAM Volume 1 Issue 1 A Quarterly Publication from Mangalam Group of Educational Institutions November 2010 Paid news syndrome can tarnish polity, says Ansari “The recent practices of leveraging political and economic content in our media for overt and covert revenue generation have the malevolent potential to tarnish our polity and even destabilize the economy,” Mr. Ansari said. Speaking at the inauguration of M.C. Varghese Memorial Lecture series in Delhi, he said this has led the Editors Guild and the Press Council to investigate “the phenomenon of electoral malpractices of paid news and coverage packages.” Mr. Ansari, who was speaking on the topic ‘Indian Media in the New Century’, said that while by the 1990s, the tradition of a free press had been firmly established, “the winds of economic liberalisation brought with them the elements of the market economy that have changed the DNA of our media organizations. The Vice‐President expressed concern that with media organisations turning into large business entities with thousands of employees and huge financial assets, “their primary professional duty to their readership has been diluted by the commercial logic of catering to the interests of the shareholders of the holding companies.” Mr. Ansari said the pursuit of profit has altered the profile of the media entrepreneur. “Today, a media enterprise is seen as a necessary subsidiary for a growing business enterprise, a political party and even individuals seeking to leverage public influence for private gain. “On the other hand deception, opaque flow of political information, or slanted economic data prevents political and economic actors from exercising rational and well considered choices. They impede the democratic process and could lead to public disenchantment,” he said. Vice President Hamid Ansari inaugurates the M C Varghese Memorial Lecture Series in New Delhi. Beside him is Former Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan and Shri M.P. Veerendrakumar 1 An Era of Corporate Responsibility Today, main stream corporate are not sidelined as mere entrepreneurs or business establishments. On the contrary, big companies are now identified as true friends of the society in rendering a portion of their net profit for socially committed services. In the years to come, socially responsible corporate will be able to serve a lot for the overall development of our country. “Never ever let yourself a prey to any mode of corruption. Uphold your personality by exalting your professional integrity .” We at Mangalam aim at generating professionals with integrity. We exhort that the students have to realize their real self, develop an artistic approach, uphold the values and fundamental qualities and continue with professional ethics and expertise obtained during the professional education Our sole objective is to cultivate initiative, innovation and inspiration in students and developing their potential to succeed in a global management leadership. Director Commercialisation of media is a dangerous trend : Former Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan Former Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan called for “introspection” on the recent commercialisation of the mass media as it had some adverse effects on journalistic practices. Mr. Balakrishnan said when media establishments become preoccupied with the size of their readership or viewer ship, there is a greater likelihood of journalists resorting to intrusive news‐gathering methods and editors approving content without verifying the relevant facts or explaining their proper background. The Former CJI felt while “sting operations” and high‐ decibel reporting may be justified in exceptional circumstances, “they should not be resorted to as a matter of routine.” “Especially with regard to the legal system, there has been a raging debate about how unrestrained reporting often dilutes the right to fair trial for accused in high‐profile cases,” he said. Referring to suggestions to identify clear thresholds for restricting reporting on sub‐judice matters, he said “these restrictions will carry meaning only if the journalists themselves are willing to exercise restraint.” Our Director Mr. Biju Varghese with the Former Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan during the Inauguration of M.C Varghese memorial lecture series in New Delhi 2 Activities Moving From West to East ‐ Recent Trend The rate of robust economic growth that India is witnessing is a solid growth even as compared to that of China. The Consumption of rubber is an index which will probably tell us about the performance of a country. India has been taken the 4th position in consumption after China ,U.S and Japan .But we overtook Japan as well as US (which was expected after a decade) to hold the 2nd place. But as US recorded a negative growth of 32%, India could easily overtake US. Activities are moving from west to east. Now the trend is east produces and east consumes. So there will be lot of opportunities for the management graduates as the country needs them, said Shri Sajan Peter IAS ,Chairman, Rubber Board, while addressing the MBA graduates at the Farewell and Passing out Ceremony of the 4th MBA batch at Windsor Castle, Kottayam DEPARTMENT OF MANAGEMENT STUDIES The 6th MBA batch was inaugurated by Sri A J Rajan IAS on 14th July 2010.The Department felt very proud to have another batch of brilliant youngsters with us.
