Marketing for small business owners
According to Forbes magazine,
more than 50 percent of the working population works for a small
business. The Small Business
Association reports there are
almost 28 million small businesses
in the United States. Many small
businesses are home-based and
hundreds get started each month.
Despite their prevalence, only a
handful of small businesses survive more than 10 years. Small
business owners must learn how to
properly market their businesses
and garner a larger audience to stay
afloat. While there's no set amount
a business should devote to advertising and marketing, such expenses should be included in an organization's operational budget.
Small business owners just getting started may want to consider
the following tips as they attempt
to market their businesses and
expand their customer base.
· Create an online presence. A
survey from online marketing firm
Yodle found that only about half of
small businesses have websites.
Customers routinely go online to
learn more about businesses and
make purchases. Customers will
visit websites to find directions to
brick-and-mortar stores, find store
hours and/or learn about the products or services offered by a particular firm. Small business owners
should establish an online presence
and ensure the site is routinely
updated and modernized.
· Sponsor local events. For a relatively small investment, small
businesses can get their names out
to the public by sponsoring community events. When approached
by schools and other organizations, lend your help. Donate a basket of goods or a certificate for
services for gift auctions. Work
with organizations to donate a portion of sales to a charity or school
through a specialized fundraiser.
Contact a sports league to see if
your company name can be printed on uniforms or used on banners
around the field. Not only will this
get your name out, but it also will
establish a positive image of your
company.
· Establish yourself as an
'expert.' Be accessible to journalists
and media outlets who may need
quotes or insight when writing
articles. Local papers and circulars
can get your name out to the community and bring in new customers.Being quoted in print helps
establish a reputation as being an
authority in your field.
· Don't ignore social media.
According to Adroit Digital,75 percent of Americans who use the
Internet admit that product information found on social media
influences their shopping behavior
and enhances brand loyalty. Social
media accounts are generally free
to set up and require minimal
effort to maintain.Social media can
help establish and maintain a
brand and help you share messages
and other content.
Small business owners can
enhance their marketing efforts by
taking some relatively easy steps to
widen their reach and get their
names out to the public.

Make the most of small living spaces
Tiny houses are a recent phenomenon and have spurred many businesses - from builders to decorating experts - looking to connect
with consumers who want to go small. The small house movement
advocates for living simply in small homes, some of which can be as
small as 100 square feet or less.
Although living in a tiny house is not for everyone, many people prefer small-space living to living in larger, more spacious homes and
apartments. For those looking to make the most of their small living
spaces, there are ways to make such living arrangements feel larger.
· Light is your friend. Establish adequate lighting in a room that
includes at least three working lights. Varied light sources from different angles will eliminate dark corners and shadows that can make
a space feel smaller. Lighting also can draw the eye where you want
it and distract attention from the room's flaws.
· Make use of vertical space.Homes where space is at a premium may
have limited storage areas. An often-overlooked storage option is
vertical space. Space above doors, shelving, and areas above cabinetry are ideal places to store items. Use hooks on walls to keep
belongings off the floor.
· Choose light-colored paint. Choose lighter hues for your home furnishings and wall colors. You do not have to limit this to white
(unless landlords require white walls). Pale colors will help reflect
light and can make the room seem larger than it really is. Using a
dark color on the flooring can make other lighter shades really pop in contrast.
· Conceal the clutter. If you cannot keep personal belongings to the utmost minimum in a
home, experiment with clever ways to keep items out of sight. Furniture that serves dual
purposes can help with this task.Storage ottomans will conceal small toys or linens and also
provide seating options in a room when guests come over. A dresser can be used as a dining room buffet piece, and the numerous drawers can hold knickknacks or silverware.
Furniture with built-in, hidden storage is well worth the investment when living spaces are
limited.
· Create dual-purpose rooms. Lack of space means getting creative with the space you do
have. A nook in your bedroom can be devoted to a miniature home office. Perhaps you can
establish a crafting center in a portion of your laundry room. Garages have long served as
catch-all spaces in homes. Apart from storage, they can be subdivided for home gyms or
even a place to gather and watch a ballgame.
· Hang mirrors to "expand" rooms. Mirrors can trick the eye into believing there is more
space in a room. Mirrors melt away room borders and can accelerate the flow of light.
Hanging them throughout your home can make spaces seem larger.
· Think about built-in furniture. Traditional furniture may not be practical for small spaces
and can waste a lot of room. Custom-built furniture is often the way to go to maximize the
area you do have. Employ a little do-it-yourself initiative as well, customizing items for the
perfect fit.
· Work with a designer. If you're having difficulty making a small space work for you, consult with an interior designer or a contractor for some ideas.

Where is best for business in Catawba County?
BY CIGI SPARKS
O-N-E REPORTER
Since the economic downturn of the
early 2000's, North Carolina's economy has
since risen and shifted into high gear.
According to the Bureau of Economic
Analysis, the state's 2010 total gross state
product was $424.9 billion, making it the
ninth wealthiest state in terms of gross
domestic product.
The state's population has also
been on the rise since 2010 – raising by 3.3 percent within the last
5 years.
CNBC's list of "Top States for
Businesses for 2010" recognized North Carolina as the
fourth-best state in the nation,
behind Texas, Virginia and
Colorado.
With North Carolina topping many lists, popular survey
site NerdWallet decided to take
a look at the best places in the
state to start a business.
"The survey was based on
U.S. Census date convering
121,462 businesses in 115 communities in N.C. and ranked the communities on two key metrics,"
according to the survey. "One was
business climate, which made up 65
percent of the overall score and included
the average annual revenue of business,
the percentage of companties with paid
employees and the number of companies
per 100 people. The other metric wakes
into account the health of the local economy, which made up 35 percent of the total
score. It covered such factors as median
annual income, median annual housing
costs and the unemployment rate."
Half of the top
10
places
ranked
o n
the
survey
are towns
and cities with
fewer than 10,000 residents. Except for the City of Hickory, all of
them have fewer than 20,000. Catawba

County stands out

cit ies
–
Conover
and Hickory – in
the top 10 and Newton
making the list as well.
Hickory came in at No. 4 on the list,
Conover at No. 6 and Newton at No. 63.
"I think it really validates what the city has
thought for many years," said Conover
City Manager, Donald Duncan. "We pride
ourselves in out businesses – we really try
to take care of our current businesses and
we try to recruit new ones as well."
With Conover only being about 50
miles from Charlotte and having good
proximity to the interstate, the city has
slowly shifted from being a more manufacturing based facility to a more servicesoriented industry. Conover only has
around 900 businesses but they rake in an
average revenue per firm of about $1.9
million.
"Conover believes in regional economic development," Duncan said. "If a company expands in Newton, Conover, where
ever – that's amazing – our goal is to see
everyone grow."
Newton also makes its way onto the list.
ranking right in the middle of the 115
business list.
Although it's No. 63, Newton
ranks above bigger surrounding
cities like Mooresville, Charlotte
and Winston Salem.
With a population of approximately 13,000, Newton has 1,297
businesses with an average revenue per business of $1,613,887.
"I think that it speaks
well of our region and Catawba
County to have three municipalities on the survey," said
Newton Business Advisory
Committee Chairman, Jerry
Hodge. "Newton is working
hard to show businesses and citizens that we're trying to move
forward and develop the city even
further."
Newton is implementing things
like the new Downtown Streetscape
and North Newton Master Plan, the
Newton Strategic Plan, new way-finding signage, the development of the
Downtown
Newton
Development
Association and the expansion of water
and sewer lines in and around the city.
"Anytime another municipality in the
county is doing well, it helps all of us,"
Hodge said. "There are several positive
things going on in Newton that haven't
bloomed yet but are in the process of
developing. Just because one is fourth, one
sixth and one sixty-third, that doesn't
mean that all municipalities in the county
aren't efficient – they're just in a different
cycle."
Having three municipalities within the
county make the NerdWallet list shows
that even though the county suffered in
the early 2000's due to the economic recession, it has still been able to make an outstanding recovery.
"Newton, Conover, Hickory – Catawba
County's just a great place to be right now,"
Hodge said.

Transform trash
into new and
useful items
According to the United States Environmental Protection
Agency, Americans generate around 4.6 pounds of trash per
person, per day. Sixty-five percent of that trash comes from
personal residences, and more than half of that trash ends up
buried in landfills.
Handling trash is a mammoth task, and one of the easiest
ways to tackle such a task is to reduce the amount of garbage we
produce. Turning some trash into useful items is one way to effectively manage waste, and many items that typically find their way
into landfills can be turned into new tools.
Glass bottles and jars
Even though glass items are regularly recycled, it's possible to repurpose glass containers around the house. Empty wine bottles and jars can
make lovely candleholders.Pair glass items with a soy candle and cast delicate
light on surroundings without using any other resources.
Scores of craft projects can be made from jars. Jars with lids can be repurposed into storage containers for home improvement and craft supplies.Such jars
also can be used to store other foods.
Books
In an era of ebooks and digital news, more and more books are finding their way into
landfills. But books can be turned into decorative items.Gluing or attaching books together
makes for an interesting storage shelf that can hold newer books or other items.Stacked and
secured books can be transformed into a conversation piece, such as a side or coffee table.
Hollow out a niche inside of the pages of a book to use as a treasure chest or to store jewelry
you'd like to keep hidden.
Jewelry
Various items can be repurposed into jewelry after their initial use.Bracelets can be made
from discarded electronic components or recycled paper.Even plastic bread clips
can be gathered and strung together for an eclectic looking piece of jewelry.
Old clothes
Many people donate their old clothes to the needy, and such gestures
help support charitable efforts that benefit the less fortunate. But old
clothes also can be turned into may different items, even by those people
with only minimal sewing skills.
Use cotton, linen or even polyester clothes to create tote bags or wine
caddies. Turn discarded clothes into items for doll dress-up. Or, use fabric from clothes to make slipcovers for throw pillows. Small swatches of
fabric can be sewn together for change purses or to hold mobile phones.
Plastic bottles
Trimming plastic bottles into different shapes creates possibilities
for various storage containers. Turn an empty shampoo bottle into a
device charging station that hangs from an outlet, keeping charging
cords tidy. Or trim a plastic bottle to form a phone holder that can be
attached to a bicycle.Empty milk containers can be turned into indoor
terrariums or to start seedlings before spring planting.
Paper
Paper is another household item that need not find its way into landfills.
Scraps of paper can be bound together to form note pads, and documents can be printed on the
back of previously used pieces of paper to fuel conservation efforts.
Shredded paper can be used as filler for mailing packages or as decorative confetti inside of gift
bags. It also can be used to stuff dolls and toys made from recycled fabric.

What to expect in technology this year
As technology continues to
evolve, devices are being used
in ways that might have
seemed impossible as recently as a couple of years ago.
Several industries have
begun to institute changes
that reflect the population's
growing reliance on technology. Many airlines now offer
WiFi service for passengers,
and retailers have worked
with vendors to provide
mobile applications that facilitate buying via smartphones
and tablets.
Many feel the future of
technology will revolve
around merging the real and
virtual worlds. Over the next
12 months, the following
technologies figure to gain
more steam.
· On-demand computing:
Reliance on desktop and lap-
top computers continues to
dwindle as tablets and smartphones grow in popularity.
The Pew Research Center
reports that 58 percent of
Americans have a smartphone, while 42 percent own
a tablet. These gadgets allow
for immediate connectivity
for gaming and streaming television and video.
· Mobile consumerism:
Retailers are continually
revising their offerings to
consumers in an effort to
cater to mobile users. Many
businesses now boast websites that are optimized for
tablet use, while others have
developed apps that work in
conjunction with traditional
websites or as stand-alone
services.
· 3D printing: Consumer
analysts say 3D printing will
reach a tipping point in the
next several years. As the
demand for 3D printing
increases, the cost of 3D
printing devices will fall and
make them even more accessible to the masses. For those
unfamiliar with 3D printing,
the technology allows a user
to make a 3D manipulated
object from a digital file. The
printer lays down successive
levels of material, usually a
polymer plastic, to form the
end product. Reproducing a
digital file via 3D printing can
take anywhere from minutes
to days.
· Energy management
information
systems:
Analysts expect companies to
place a greater emphasis on
energy management in coming years as a means of reducing energy consumption.
· Cloud computing: Cloud
computing involves large
groups of remote servers networked together to allow centralized data storage. Instead
of data saved to a hard disk or
drive in a home or business, it
is stored to a drive that runs
through the Internet. People
may be surprised at just how
much data actually is stored
in the cloud. It's what enables
a user to access a file from
work at home or finish playing a game that began on a
computer or a mobile phone.
Businesses are increasingly
bypassing internal servers
and software in favor of
cloud-based options. The
cloud is prolific, but it still is
expected to grow more.
· The Internet of things
(IOT): This concept involves
using the Internet in ways
that allows objects to send
and receive data. Examples of
embedded computing devices
can
include
biochip
transponders on farm animals, sensors built into vehicles,
heart-monitoring
implants, and thermostat or
lighting systems that enable
remote
monitoring.
According to Gartner, Inc., an
American information technology research and advisory
firm, there will be around 26
billion devices on IOT by
2020.
Technology continues to
evolve and affect the way the
world operates. Each year
brings new information and
services that can have profound impacts on how people
live and do business.

Pack a suitc as e li ke a pro
Once a vacation destination is planned and the trip is booked, the next question travelers often ask themselves is what to bring? Certain trips may necessitate only a few essentials tossed into a tote bag, while other trips may require an extensive wardrobe.
Anyone who has wrestled with an overflowing suitcase knows that packing can
sometimes be an arduous task. Narrowing down just what to bring can be timeconsuming. Finally, getting all of those items into the suitcase, only to find they
don't fit as expected, can be particularly aggravating. Couple the struggle of
packing with increased baggage fees at airlines, and it's easy to see why
packing is a part of travel that requires some forethought.
Following these time-tested tips for packing can ensure you spend less
time wrestling your suitcase and more time planning your trip.
· Know baggage rules in advance. Flyers should contact their
airline to learn their baggage rules. Many airlines place restrictions
on the size of a carry-on bag and limit how many suitcases can be
checked into cargo.Knowing the measurements you have to work
with can make it easier to pack.
· Leave a lot at home. Many travelers view their belongings as
security blankets and connections to home.Vacationers may try to plan
for every weather scenario or situation, and that often leads to overpacking.Pack three shirts for every pair of pants, skirt or shorts your bring.Stick
to basics that make you feel comfortable rather than flashy,statement-making pieces.Choose clothing that's easily mixed and matched.Don't forget at
least one dressy ensemble for a night out.
· Choose the right fibers. Even if you prefer cotton and natural fibers,
they can be heavier and take longer to dry. They're also more prone to wrinkling. Blends, including wrinkle-free synthetic fibers, won't weigh down a
suitcase and won't look like they've been trampled on when you arrive at
your destination.
· Rolling is a sound packing method.Rolling clothing not only takes up
less space, but clothes that are rolled also are less prone to wrinkling.Rolling
creates a flat foundation in the suitcase upon which you can build.Put larger, heavier clothes on the bottom near the wheels and lighter tops and
undergarments on the top. This will help balance out the bag and prevent
it from toppling when the bag is upright.
· Bundle clothes as well. Another way to take the work out of packing
is to bundle outfits together. Place a pair of folded pants on the bottom
and top with a shirt, underwear and socks, and roll them together for
each day you will be traveling.
· Use shoes for storage. Place smaller items, such as socks,
electronics chargers and toiletries, in your shoes. It's another way to
save room in an already tight suitcase.Use twist ties or rubber bands
to bundle cords to chargers and other devices so they're tidy.
· Use handbags for cosmetics.Skip the cosmetics bag and use a second purse for cosmetics and jewelry. This gives you another option
when going out on the town and helps you save space when packing.
· Investigate what is stocked at the hotel. Call your hotel before
packing or visit them online to take inventory of what is included in your
room,as there is no need packing a hair dryer if your room includes one.If you're traveling to a friend's house or family, chances are they have the toiletries you need. If you find
you need something, you always can buy it at your destination.

How to keep your bike in top form
Bicycle riding is one of the best things a person can do
for the environment and his or her personal health.
Riding a bike requires only the power of the body and
does not produce any noxious emissions. It's quiet, and
bikes are able to gain access to places where cars are
not permitted.
According to Glumac, a full-service engineering company specializing in sustainable design, using one gallon of gasoline in a car produces about 20 pounds of
carbon dioxide emissions directly, or 26 pounds if you
account for processing the fuel. Opting for a bike
instead of a car can have profound environmental benefits.
Bicycles are most useful and efficient when they are
properly maintained. Failing to maintain a bike means
it could be relegated to a dusty corner in the garage. To
keep bikes in ideal working order, consider these bike
maintenance tips.
· Keep the bike clean. A bicycle is a collection of moving parts. Over time mud and debris can get lodged in
gears, tires and other components, impacting the per-
formance of the bike. Regular washing ensures that the
bike will operate at peak capacity whenever you decide
to go for a ride. High-pressure hoses may damage sensitive bearing systems, so it's better to use a damp rag
to carefully clean the bike. Brushing or buffing away
debris can be handy as well. Consider how frequently
you ride the bike and where you ride it when determining how often to clean the bike.
chain and other moving parts lubricated. This reduces
excessive wear caused by friction and can prevent
gears from ceasing up. Lubricants also can help prevent rust and corrosion. Apply lubricant to the chain,
brake and derailleur levers and cables. But too much
lubricant can be a bad thing, attracting dirt and reducing performance. Use only as much as the bike needs
and wipe away the excess.
· Maintain proper tire pressure. Much like with car
tires, air pressure in bicycle tires can impact the ride
and likelihood of damage. According to the CARE
Exchange, a group of riders involved in fundraising
cycling events, too little air in tires can increase the
likelihood of punctures to the inner tube. Low air pressure can put more pressure on bike components and
accelerate wear and tear. Plus, it can make for an
uncomfortable ride. Similarly, too much pressure can
cause the tires to blow out or provide a less enjoyable
ride. Always keep tires at the pressure rating listed on
the tire's sidewall.
· Get a tune-up. It's beneficial to periodically have an
experienced bike mechanic look over your bicycle.
Bearings may loosen slightly, and brake and gear
cables can stretch. Take the bicycle into a bike shop so
the staff can give it an overhaul, addressing any areas
that may need a little fine-tuning. Bike shop employees
typically are knowledgeable in bicycle maintenance,
and they can provide a wealth of information on other
cycling-related subjects.
· Keep the chain well lubricated. One of the most crucial steps to maintaining a bicycle is to keep the bike
