The Wagner Wellness Van is one way PRMC is bringing healthcare into the community.
here does good health begin? Is it at a
doctor’s office, with routine checkups?
Is it at home, with healthy food choices in
the refrigerator? Is it at the gym, on the
treadmill? Maybe it’s in utero, with the
choices a mother makes for prenatal care.
No matter where you think good health
begins, a hospital isn’t the place that usually
comes to mind — that’s where you go when
you’re sick.
But the responsibility of hospitals is
changing. National and state mandates are
holding hospitals accountable for the
wellness of their communities. That’s
causing a sea change at Delmarva’s largest
and oldest hospital, Peninsula Regional
Medical Center in Salisbury.
“For most of our 117 years, Peninsula
Regional has focused on acute care. Now we
are moving toward a system that puts
patients’ needs first, and makes healthcare
more of a team sport,” said Karen Poisker,
MSN, MBA, NEA-BC, Peninsula Regional’s
Vice President for Population Health.
Poisker’s position is a new one, created to
help oversee the Medical Center’s initiatives
for patient education, community-based
wellness, reducing readmissions and
chronic disease coaching and management.
Poisker herself is not new to healthcare —
she has been a member of the PRMC team
for 40 years.
W
“This is an exciting time to be in
healthcare,” Poisker said. “We are breaking
down the walls that kept parts of healthcare
isolated from each other, and made them
more difficult for patients to access.”
That means bringing care closer to home,
a goal that PRMC is achieving in multiple
ways. One method is its new Delmarva
Health Pavilions — one opened in
September in Millsboro, Delaware; and
another is planned to open in Ocean Pines
this summer. The health pavilions make care
more accessible to communities. The
Millsboro pavilion is home to a primary care
office, a pharmacy, laboratory, orthopaedics,
diagnostic imaging and physical
rehabilitation services. The Ocean Pines
pavilion will host primary care along with a
laboratory, pharmacy, and Cardiovascular
and Pulmonary Rehabilitation services, with
even more to come.
“We are refining our focus in local
neighborhoods where we can best and most
conveniently provide these types of
healthcare services that help people to
become healthy and live well,” Poisker said.
“The Cardiac Rehabilitation program is a
great, longstanding example of this,” Poisker
added. “It has been in place for nearly 30
years at Peninsula Regional, the largest in
the state of Maryland, helping people regain
strength after heart events. They exercise

under the care of specialists who help
them to go at the right pace. Often
participants say, ‘If I had started doing
this sooner, I might not have been in the
hospital in the first place.’ That’s what
population health is all about —
offering preventative services and
helping our community to avoid the
need for that acute care.”
In addition, Delmarva will see an
increased presence of PRMC’s mobile
health vehicle, the Wagner Wellness
Van, providing screenings and health
checks. “The Wagner Wellness Van can
go to the community and be what we
A community education event
brought one Children’s telemedicine
doctor a unique opportunity. Fran
Cogen, MD, CDE, a nationally known
pediatric diabetes expert at Children’s
who sees patients at PRMC via
telemedicine, was able to meet some of
her patients in person for the first time.
“We really know each other well
already, but it’s wonderful to be able to
shake their hands,” she said. A patient’s
father spoke at the event about how his
family had to spend an entire day
traveling across the bridge for his
daughter’s diabetes appointments. Now
they see Dr. Cogen via telemedicine at
PRMC, and it has made a great
difference having that care close to
home.
There are also partnerships with
other community care providers such as
nursing homes, home health care and
physicians’ offices. Peninsula Regional
Medical Center’s affiliation with the
Johns Hopkins Clinical Research
Network and other researchers has
brought opportunities for patients to
participate in clinical trials.

chronic diseases, and helping people
adopt healthy lifestyles.”
Poisker says that can mean
collaborations such as the
HealthPartners Delmarva partnership
that PRMC formed with Bayhealth in
Delaware, within which the two health
systems can exchange information
about best practices and use the power
of group purchasing to lower their costs.
It can also mean stopping health
problems before they start. For
example, childhood obesity can cause
many health issues. The Healthy Us
program at the Henson Family YMCA in
Salisbury brings together Peninsula
Regional’s pediatric hospitalists from
Children’s National and YMCA staff
members with children at risk of obesity
issues and their families. Learning
nutrition and exercise basics can set
them up for success later in life.
By bringing care closer to the
community and making it more
accessible, Poisker says Peninsula
Regional Medical Center hopes to fulfill
its guiding mission: “To improve the
health of the communities we serve.” ■

need it to be,” Poisker said. “It has two
full, private exam rooms where we can
perform all kinds of care.”
Wellness and prevention are behind
many Peninsula Regional initiatives,
including its annual Live Well DriveThru Flu Clinic, which vaccinates an
average of about 5,000 people against
influenza annually in two days, and its
Live Well HealthFest, a free screening
event planned this year for April 11 at
Bennett High School in Salisbury.
With diabetes an issue for Delmarva,
HealthFest will offer a more advanced
diabetes screening this year. Those at
highest risk will be offered an A1C
blood test, which provides a snapshot of
a person’s past three months of blood
sugar levels.
“We will focus on how to educate and
motivate the public to reduce the odds
of developing chronic diseases or how
to better live with their diseases, along
with community partners and other
providers,” Poisker said. “We are
offering chronic disease selfmanagement classes through MAC, Inc.
that emphasize education as well as
Blood pressure screening at the 2014
Apple Scapple Festival in Bridgeville, DE.
“The need to develop community and
other clinical relationships and ways of
providing care outside of the walls of
hospitals has become more important
than ever,” Poisker said. “Since hospitals
are essentially being held responsible
for reducing cost across the healthcare
system in Maryland, it is essential that
we play a significant role in helping
orchestrate access to care and
approaches that resolve many of the
social problems that prevent people
from using healthcare earlier. It is really
about improving health and preventing
as much as possible the progression of

how to better control diabetes, or to
actually reduce factors that may
contribute to its development.”
Partnerships are an important part of
Peninsula Regional Medical Center’s
population health focus as well.
“We have partnered with Children’s
National Health System, based in
Washington, D.C., to bring needed but
hard-to-find specialties here to
Delmarva,” Poisker said. “We have
specialists in pediatric cardiology,
endocrinology and neonatology here to
help patients in person and using
telemedicine.”

artnerships. In life, in love, in business, if
entered into wisely, they often pay dividends.
And it’s no secret there is much more to be achieved
by the whole of the group than the efforts of the
individual person.
Our founder, Dr. George W. Todd, understood
that implicitly. In 1897, he relied on the backing of
local legislators for the support to build his new sixbed Peninsula General Hospital. He also welcomed
the generosity of Salisbury’s citizens for items like
lemonade glasses, washtubs, oysters, crackers and
cakes. It, indeed, took a village to get our hospital
through its first year.
Today, albeit on a much larger and more modern
scale, healthcare gets by with, apologies to The
Beatles, “a little help from our friends.”
It has to in these times of population health
management. We’re responsible for the overall
health of our communities; not just when they need
hospital services, but at all times. We’re also
reimbursed for how well we do that, how much we
reduce readmissions and how successfully we
partner with our local physicians and other health
providers in our community — and our own state
and neighboring states — to keep people well.
That’s why Peninsula Regional has recently
entered into partnerships with Bayhealth of
Delaware (HealthPartners Delmarva) and 9
hospitals on the Western Shore (Advanced Health
Collaborative). We are like-minded, being of similar
scale and market essentially to our respective
communities. We’re working with the collective
power of collaboration to find ways to make
healthcare more affordable, to make it available to
more people and to bring it closer to their homes.
Doing so has placed Peninsula Regional Medical
Center in the best possible position in Maryland
and Delaware to achieve our goals.
Not, however, at the expense of forgetting the
importance of our partnerships within.
We’ve recently launched a medical leadership
project. It’s a co-management role that pairs some
of our outstanding physicians with the clinical
managers and directors of our key divisions to
further strengthen the leadership relationship and
our pledge to population health management.
Traditionally, doctors have been viewed as a
customer of the services we provide. We’re evolving
that mindset and asking them to now join us as a
full partner in the patient care experience. We’re
fortunate to have Dr. Elleda Ziemer partnering with
Karen Dunn and others in our medical division; Dr.
Mark Edney joining Warner Crumb to co-manage
our inpatient surgical division; Dr. Thomas
DeMarco working with Joan Daugherty in our
cancer care division and Dr. Steven Hearne working
with Jeanne Ruff in our cardiovascular division.
The physician’s primary focus is to work
collaboratively with the clinical leaders in the
service lines of each of their divisions, to establish
best practice ideas and to assist them in delivering
greater operational efficiency, improvement in
patient outcomes, quality, safety and the overall
healthcare experience. The dividends are much the
same: getting people out of the hospital and back to
their normal activities sooner, keeping our citizens
healthier, reducing potentially preventable
conditions and dropping readmission rates to the
hospital.
And who, besides a physician, has a stake equally
as large as ours in keeping our neighbors healthy?
It’s a natural fit.
This is a team effort and a team partnership.
We’re moving from operating in silos to working
smarter, together, to facilitate what is best for the
patient. Not unlike Peninsula Regional’s first year of
service in 1897, it’s going to take a similar village to
embrace the change necessary to continue to
enhance our clinical services and improve the
health of our communities.

of course.
She has some advice for
kids or teens who get a
diabetes diagnosis: “Don’t
let it hold you back. Just
because you’re different, it
doesn’t mean you can’t lead
a normal life.”
Joining her at the most
recent 5K a few months ago

ype 1 diabetes is typically diagnosed in children and
teens. It can be difficult for children — and their
parents — to face this diagnosis that can change their
whole lifestyle in an instant.
Exercise can be a challenge with type 1 diabetes, because
it requires a careful balancing act between insulin doses,
food and activity. It requires careful monitoring. But just
because something takes an extra few steps doesn’t mean
it’s impossible. Two outstanding young patients at
Peninsula Regional Medical Center’s Outpatient Pediatric
Diabetes Clinic have shown that anything is possible.
Hayley Dize was eight years old when two important
things happened: She started playing field hockey, and she
found out she had type 1 diabetes. She was a little nervous
when she found out she had diabetes, but she was
determined not to let it stop her.
“I had faith on my side,” she said. “I knew I would be able
to manage it.” Since she was in fifth grade, Hayley has worn
an insulin pump, a small, computerized device that
delivers insulin without the need for injections.
“I am thankful for the freedom the pump gives,” she said.
Among other things, it has helped her have the freedom to
pursue her athletics. Now she’s a freshman at Salisbury
University studying elementary education and is on the
field hockey team. She just participated in her first NCAA
tournament with the Division III team. “It’s been my goal
since I was 8,” she said. She says anyone with diabetes can
achieve their goals if they are determined enough. “Don’t
let it scare you or think you can’t do anything. If you take
care of yourself, you can lead the life you want to,” she said.
Another Salisbury teen discovered her condition later.
Allie O’Leary started noticing the symptoms when she was
14 years old. “I thought I was going crazy — I was filling
my water bottle at school seven times a day, and I was
still thirsty. I was eating all the time, but losing weight.”
Her mom took her to the doctor, and Allie had her blood
drawn. As soon as they got the results, Allie was rushed to
the hospital — she had type 1 diabetes, and her blood
sugar levels were off the charts.
“I was really afraid,” she said. But by day 4 at the
hospital, having gotten her blood sugar to a more
controlled level and learned how to administer insulin and
check her levels, Allie was anxious to leave. “I had a soccer
tournament!” she said. Allie is a dedicated player for the
team at James M. Bennett High School — and she has great
support from her coach, who also happens to be her dad,
Ed O’Leary.
Now that she has gotten used to life with type 1 diabetes,
she’s not letting it hold her back. She continues to play
soccer as well as lacrosse. “It’s easy to manage,” she says.
“My mom measures my food, and when I have a game, I
always check by blood sugar before and after.”
Her mom, Alexis, says she admires how her daughter has
adjusted to life with diabetes. “She’s shown such
responsibility. She’s always been a great kid, and we are so
proud of her.” Her whole family supports her. Her sister,

At the Running on Insulin 5K, held in Fruitland every fall, Peninsula
Regional nurse practitioner Flora Glasgow ran alongside Allie
O’Leary, for whom the race was started; O’Leary’s friend and fellow
type 1 diabetic Allie Nutall; and Hayley Dize. O’Leary and Dize are
patients of Glasgow at the PRMC Pediatric Diabetes Clinic.

In Memory Of Delmarva Native Madeline Perdue
embers of the Arthur W. Perdue
Foundation helped Peninsula Regional
Medical Center dedicate its new Mother-Baby
Unit on Friday, November 28, 2014.
Built with the help of a $500,000 grant from
the Arthur W. Perdue Foundation, the new
unit provides large, modern, private rooms
with more space for mothers, babies and
families. The unit was dedicated in the name
of Delmarva native Madeline Perdue, who
passed away in 2011, and was the mother of
Perdue Farms Chairman Jim Perdue. As they

Apheresis Now Offered at PRMC
TPE is a therapy that separates a patient’s plasma out of the
blood, removes it, and exchanges it with a replacement fluid;
usually albumin and/or fresh frozen plasma. TPE (also
sometimes referred to as PLEX) can be used to treat certain
autoimmune diseases such as Wegener’s Vasculitis and
Goodpasture’s Syndrome; Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic
Purpura (TTP); and many other disease processes and
toxicities.
RBX is a therapy used to treat complications of Sickle Cell
Disease (SCD) by removing damaged red blood cells and
replacing them with normal ones. This treatment is
particularly indicated for stroke and Acute Chest Syndrome
sometimes seen with SCD, and may sometimes be used
prophylactically.
Erythrocytapheresis is a method used to remove excess red
blood cells from patients with primary and secondary
erythrocytosis. This therapy can also be used to treat iron
overload.
Peninsula Regional looks forward to growing this service in
the coming months and to being able to provide specialized
care for patients closer to their homes.
Sickle Cell Support Group
Peninsula Regional Medical Center hosts a monthly support group for people with sickle cell disease. The support
group gives people with SCD the chance to interact with others facing similar issues, and to learn and share
information. Topics include healthy habits, how to prevent infections, medication management, pain control and
stress management. For information on joining the group, call Jennifer Rayne at 410-912-6840.

eninsula Regional Medical Center is now offering
apheresis, a therapy that removes or exchanges harmful
constituents of the blood. PRMC is the only hospital to offer
these services on the Eastern Shore.
Synthia Preudhomme of Salisbury, finishing up a round of
therapy, was one of the first patients to be treated using
apheresis at Peninsula Regional. “I’m very happy to be a part
of PRMC history,” she said. “It is much more convenient than
going over the bridge.”
Apheresis is performed in the Hemodialysis Unit by
trained Hemodialysis staff, and is available for both
inpatients and outpatients. The therapies are ordered by one
of PRMC’s four nephrologists, all of whom are credentialed in
apheresis, and are performed by a trained hemodialysis
nurse.
While apheresis encompasses many different therapies
and processes, the specific treatments currently offered at the
Medical Center are Therapeutic Plasma Exchange (TPE), Red
Blood Cell Exchange (RBX), and Red Blood Cell Depletion
(Erythrocytapheresis). Other therapies will likely be offered
soon.

“My 84-year-old mother

The care rendered by the

absolutely
EXTRAORDINARY…and this
coming from a retired RN.
The concern shown for our

overwhelming.”

HEALTHFOCUS | Spring 2015
A Message from the PRMC Board of Trustees Chairman
Change still seems to be the one
certainty that surrounds the
healthcare industry, and it’s
occurring at a very rapid pace. To
manage the constantly changing
landscape of healthcare, we too at
PRMC have to adapt quickly. I can
attest that our leadership team at
PRMC, under the guidance of our
President/CEO Dr. Peggy Naleppa,
constantly addresses the change
from a very proactive perspective. We do not follow a policy
of reactiveness, but rather one of being progressive.
We are fortunate to have such highly qualified individuals
guiding us. Our leaders and our healthcare team have
received many recognitions and awards over the past year.
For example, Dr. Naleppa was presented the American
College of Healthcare Executive’s 2014 Senior Leadership
Regents Award for her lifelong contribution to healthcare
and healthcare advancements in the state of Maryland.
Cindy Lunsford, our Executive VP/COO was named One of
Maryland’s Top 100 Women for her contributions to
healthcare in our region. Our Medical Director of Surgical
Services, Dr. Mark Edney, was appointed to the national
position of Secretary/Treasurer of the American Association
of Clinical Urologists.
As a hospital, PRMC received its fifth consecutive Most
Wired Award from the American Hospital Association for
the use of technology in patient care and safety.
Additionally, U.S. News and World Report, for a third
consecutive year, named us a Best Regional Hospital in
Maryland, and Becker’s Hospital Review recognized us as
One of 100 American Hospitals with Great Oncology
Programs. Recently, Becker’s also honored orthopaedic
surgeon Tom Brandon, MD, a member of our Joint
www.peninsula.org
10
Replacement Team, as one of America’s 52 Great
Orthopaedic Surgeons. These honors are part of the 125
national awards, recognitions and certifications PRMC and
our team have received over the past six years.
As part of our strategic plan to manage our community
health population, we opened or broke ground on several
new and exciting facilities this past year. The Delmarva
Health Pavilion Millsboro opened in September. That same
month, we broke ground for the Delmarva Health Pavilion
Ocean Pines, which will open this summer. In January, the
City of Salisbury held a press conference announcing a grant
they had secured to demolish the old Daily Times building,
making way for a new mixed-use healthcare and retail
building to occupy the space across from the hospital.
Thus, we continue to evolve, as does the business of
healthcare. However, the one constant that does not change
is the presence of Peninsula Regional Medical Center as the
leading healthcare provider for over 100 years for the
citizens of the Delmarva Peninsula.
Lastly, I want to take the opportunity to thank all the
members of the Board of Trustees and our medical staff
leadership for their service. They are individuals of the
highest caliber and serve with integrity. They are committed
to ensuring that we deliver exceptional healthcare. In
addition, I want to thank all of our exceptional employees
and volunteers that work every day to improve the health of
our friends and neighbors.
It is a privilege to be part of the leadership team at PRMC
and I would like to wish everyone a healthy, happy and
prosperous 2015.

A Message from the PRMC Foundation Board Chairman
Dear Donors,
This has been another exciting
year for Peninsula Regional Medical
Center Foundation. Thank you to
everyone who supported the many
Foundation activities during the past
year. Over 550 of you attended the
4th Annual “Moments in the
Moonlight” Gala in support of the
operating room renovation project.
The Women’s Heart Health Luncheon
and Fashion Show featured guest speaker, author and
anchorwoman Katty Kay, and raised over $40,000 for the
Guerrieri Heart and Vascular Institute. The Foundation’s
Annual Golf Tournament was again a success with 52 teams
participating. The Foundation’s newest event, The Spring
Fling, was supported by 225 attendees, netting over $50,000.
Each participant, volunteer and sponsor helped ensure the
success of these events.
Many in the community have supported the Foundation
through gifts of gratitude for the care they received at PRMC
or in honor of loved ones. Every dollar makes a difference to
the exceptional care that PRMC provides. Thank you to each
of you.
Most significantly, the Foundation completed the
$3 million Operating Room Renovation Campaign. This
campaign supported the Medical Center’s initiative to
renovate the operating rooms to meet today’s standards and
make the rooms more comfortable for patients and their
doctors. Thank you to all who contributed to this effort.
I want to offer my personal thanks to the hard-working
Foundation Board members who volunteer their time and
resources to ensure the Medical Center has the funds to
continue to offer state-of-the-art care in our community.
The Foundation Board has added two new members this
year. We welcome Tom Anderson and Frank Hanna, Jr. to
the Foundation Board.
Once again, we thank all of our donors and friends, and
we look forward to working with you in the coming year.

Vascular Lab Flow Improvement, won by Eddie Conklin,
Laura Brown, Florence Rayne, Mary Lou Melhorn and
Jeanne Ruff. Inefficient vascular lab processes led to added
cost and decreased access for patients. The team analyzed
the process to find areas of opportunity. They improved the
patient scheduling process and moved the function within
Radiology, which opened space and created cross-training
opportunities, and implemented standard work. The
result: No backlog on appointments since February 2013,
and expense was reduced to 32% below budget.

The Ed Urban Quality Award was earned by the PostOperative Cardiac Patient Glucose Control project, with
team members Steve Wilson, PA-C, Erin Mareck, Gina
Grier, Caroline Mansy, Dr. Robert Chasse, John Jordan,
Karen Jones, and Ann Turner. Their goal was to maintain
the post-op cardiac patient’s glucose to 180 mg/dl or lower
in the timeframe of 18 – 24 hours after anesthesia end time.
The team used process mapping and chart review to
analyze the data and found that 26 percent of patients had
a glucose greater than 180. These were primary Coronary
Artery Bypass patients with known diabetes or pre-diabetic
tendencies. Result: Over the last 4 quarters, more than 97
percent of post-cardiac patients sustained blood sugars
within the desired range during the 18-24 hour period
post-anesthesia. In addition, related outcomes include a
decrease in the infection rates, post-op renal failure,
surgical reoperation, prolonged ventilation, overall and
Cardio-Thoracic ICU length of stay, and mortality rates.

The Chairman’s Award Clinical Winning Entry was ICU
Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection Improvement,
won by Erin Mareck, Cindy D’Aquila, Mary Cannon, Celine
Eisele, Stacey Smith, Padmaja Ambre and Cindy Mitchell.
Starting in August, 2013 CAUTI rates in ICU started to
trend upward. The goal was to reduce the rates to below
benchmark and eventually to zero. This team developed
and implemented a Nurse-Driven Protocol for the removal
of urinary catheters as quickly as possible, which has been
shown to reduce infection rates. They also reeducated the
nursing staff about CAUTI prevention measures, which are
now part of their standard work. They do daily monitoring
of these prevention measures and review all patients with
catheters to make sure they are still necessary for good
care. As of May and June, 2014 the ICU Standardized
Infection Ratio fell below the state average.

Urban and Erin Mareck.

PRMC Operating Room Project Nears Completion
eninsula Regional Medical Center is now just weeks away from
putting the finishing touches on a few updates to their recent
operating room (OR) project. In December, PRMC completed an $18
million operating room expansion and renovation project. These
most recent minor enhancements were done to improve clinical flow
and in support of expanded technology.
“The project team owes a huge debt of gratitude to the surgeons,
OR staff and nursing staff that have dealt with evolutionary changes,”
said Tom Anderson, PRMC’s Executive Director of Facilities and
Properties. “It took the combined cooperation and patience of the
entire team to make this happen.”
Technicians finished the installation of components like overhead
booms that carry lighting, monitors and other surgical gear at the
end of last year. By the end of April, the final updates to the two
cardiac surgery or “heart” rooms in PRMC’s OR will be complete,
adding to those suites the technology that will advance them to the
highest possible standard of care. Once work ends in the heart
rooms, all work will be officially completed.
Each of the 16 operating or procedure rooms was enlarged from
400 square feet per room to 600 or more; four were expanded to 800
square feet. The increased size permits greater access to the da Vinci
Surgical System Robot and other specialized surgical technology
used in procedures at PRMC like joint replacement and open heart

surgery. OR rooms were taken offline and renovated in phases, in an
effort to limit disruption to the hospital’s always demanding surgical
schedule.
Also successfully completed was a $3 million capital campaign in
support of the project by the Peninsula Regional Medical Center
Foundation. ”The Foundation is very pleased to have completed our
$3 million Campaign in support of the operating room renovation,”
said Leighton Moore, Foundation Board Chairman. “We thank
everyone who contributed to this campaign, and congratulate the
Medial Center for providing a much improved patient and physician
experience.”
‘To Give Hope to Others’ Delmarva Man With ALS Walks 10 Miles
im Hill’s walk from Dewey Beach to
Bethany Beach on November 22 was
a 10-mile journey that showed how far he
has already come. Hill has ALS —
amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known
as Lou Gehrig’s disease, which attacks
nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord,
and affects the body’s ability to control
muscles. For many with ALS, a short walk
is impossible.
That’s why Hill chose to do the walk:
“To offer hope,” he said. “When you’re told that there is no hope, you
don’t try. I want to show people that trying matters.”
Hill first noticed the onset of symptoms — unsteadiness, shaking,
severe leg pain — about three years ago. He received his diagnosis in
the spring of 2014 at a major Baltimore-area hospital, and was taken
aback by what the doctor told him. “He said, ‘Get your affairs in
order,’ and that was it. I asked about physical therapy, things I could
do to help, and he told me that even if it did help a little, my
insurance probably wouldn’t cover it.”
Hill wasn’t content with that answer. He found Peninsula Regional
Medical Center’s ALS Clinic, which brings together a team of
healthcare experts from all disciplines related to ALS: neurologists,
pulmonologists, gasteroenterologists, physiatrists, dietitians,
physical, occupational and speech therapists, social workers,
chaplains and more. “They saved my life,” Hill said.
Working determinedly on his physical therapy, Hill went from
being able to walk only a few blocks to reaching five miles. “I walk
two miles every night, I do hours of physical therapy daily, I take my
medications — I do everything the professionals tell me to do,
because I have to say ahead of it,” he said.
T
Hill has normal strength and hasn’t missed a day of work at Wilgus
Associates in Bethany Beach, where he is senior property manager
and vice president. “There’s never a moment that I don’t know I have
ALS,” he said. “I can feel it within my body, moving my muscles
constantly. But I work at it, and it is paying off.”
Hill also credits a strong faith and a network of thousands of
people who are praying for him. “My condition is as close to a
miracle as you can get,” he said. It’s also part of what motivates him
to always give back. “My family is always asking what we can do for
others,” he said.
Hill was able to walk his daughter down the aisle at her wedding
recently, and then set his sights on a longer walk — from Dewey
Beach to his office in Bethany, a 10-mile solo walk. “I want to give
hope to people with ALS,” he said. “You may not necessarily live a
longer life, but you can lead a happier, more fruitful life if you try.”
Hill’s walk also raised funds to help patients at the ALS Clinic.
“There’s no administrative cost whatsoever — anything I raise will go
directly to help patients here on Delmarva.” For example, people
with ALS often need items such as weighted forks and spoons, elastic
shoelaces and canes to help them overcome the tremors that the
disease causes. Hill will donate the items to the Peninsula Regional
Medical Center Foundation for distribution to ALS patients.
Visit facebook.com/tenmilemiracle to learn more about the event.
Peninsula Regional Medical Center’s ALS Clinic is held on the first
Thursday of every month, and an ALS Support Group meets the
second Friday of the month at the Avery W. Hall Education Center,
and features speakers, programs and refreshments. The support
group is based on the needs of the patients and their caregivers, and
we do our best to meet as many of those needs as possible. For
questions concerning the clinic, or to attend the support group, call
410-912-7069 and leave a message for the ALS Clinic.

A simple flyer led to
Dr. Danielle Giddins’
homecoming.
The family doctor was serving in
the U.S. Air Force at Pope Air Force
Base in Fayetteville, N.C., in 2008
when she learned of an opening at
Peninsula Regional Family Medicine
Ocean View. Originally from Dover
and familiar with the Delaware
beaches, she knew it would be a
Dr. Danielle Giddins
perfect fit.
“This is such a welcoming
community,” said Dr. Giddins, whose patient list has soared from
500 to 1,800 in six years. “We’re definitely filling a void here in
Sussex County. The population is growing rapidly and there aren’t
enough primary care providers to serve everyone.”
Dr. Giddins said her No. 1 goal is to help people navigate the
healthcare system. What helps, she said, is her ability to relate to her
patients. Since many are active members of the U.S. Coast Guard
and retired veterans, Dr. Giddins — also a veteran — frequently
passes on her knowledge about the Veterans Health Administration
to help her patients get the best care possible and avoid potential
hurdles.
It’s a bonus the office is affiliated with Peninsula Regional Medical
Center, which gives patients access to coordinated care. Medical
Assistant Robin Gillard said that’s one of many reasons she’s stayed
with the organization for 20 years. “It’s comprehensive care,” she
said. “I’ve stayed here for as long as I have because I love the group’s
approach to care. If you need to get a patient an appointment with a
specialist, you just call and they get them in right way.”
Dr. Giddins encourages everyone to find a family doctor —
someone who can be their advocate and help manage chronic
conditions. “The role of the family doctor is not just to see you when
you’re sick,” she said. “We need to get an overall picture of your
health.”
And, don’t worry; Dr. Giddins won’t pull any punches. “I tell my
patients how it is. That way, they really do value my opinion and take
it into consideration when they’re making decisions about their
health.”
Dr. Giddins is board-certified by the American Board of Family
Medicine. She received her medical degree from Jefferson Medical
College at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia and
completed both an internship and a residency in Family Medicine at
Malcolm Grow Medical Center at the Andrews Air Force Base in
Maryland.
