For those who have driven past “741” in
recent days will have noticed the cottage
has gone and some out-buildings have
been removed.
Demolition on the site will commence within
a few days (yep we are again awaiting a
council permit to demolish), the site will be
completely cleared and levelled to make
way for the commencement of construction.
The building committee has now had four
meetings and using these to finalise interior
plans for all the individual units and the
community areas including the rather large
community centre which will house a café,
beauty/hairdressing salon, a number of
“private” seating areas and a large outdoor
balcony. Pricing is yet to be finalised but we
will be considering individual preferences
for those who put in early expressions of
interest. Expected completion date will be
early 2015 so if you or your parents are
looking to move watch out for our first
announcements.

Overbeek Lodge.
Both Elders and staff at Overbeek Lodge
have settled quietly into the new year after
the busy Christmas period.
We have sadly said goodbye to dear, long
standing Elders, Pia Antheunis, in January
and Chris Otten, in March. Our sympathies
go out to their families. Both are sincerely
missed here in our Amalia household.
We welcome Trudy Leenan, who transferred
across from Margriet Manor and Martin De
Clercq to our family here at Overbeek Lodge.
Many of our staff have gained further
qualification and are now expanding their
scope of practice which has benefited
Overbeek by ensuring ongoing and up-todate knowledge of the aged care industry.
As well as external studies, staff have been
busy attending mandatory and elective inhouse educational sessions to ensure current
best practice.
Easter came early this year, at the end of
March, with chocolate eggs exchanged,
Easter activities and a church service on
Good Friday and Easter Saturday. It was
lovely to see so many family and extended
families visiting over the public holiday
period.
Notification of power supply disruptions sent
us all into fast forward mode. It’s amazing
the preplanning needed to keep the facility
running smoothly without an electricity
supply . As one might expect it was
cancelled at the last minute only to be
rescheduled. This of course did happen a
few weeks later and we were more than
prepare due to our dry run. A big thank you
to all our staff, some who started a little
earlier, our Main Kitchen, for providing the
meals that didn’t need to be served hot and
of course our Maintenance and Office staff
who assisted in keeping our building secure.
Luckily the day wasn’t too hot, and there
were no major disruptions for our Elders.
(Other than no BVN or TV shows).
We currently have the DutchCare Bus
available for our Elders. This again is a real
highlight. Everyone has commented on how
much they enjoyed the drive, looking at the
changes in scenery, the company and fun
during the trip evident from the happy chatter
on return to Overbeek.

life. What would we do with the morning
coffees in the Kiosks without them? Our
Elders are looking forward to them and are a
bit disappointed when it is a public holiday or
the volunteer is sick, for then they do not
have this special event.
All our volunteers, Elder’s family and friends
and staff members not only donate their time,
but also are always willing to donate craft
items, raffle items and items for special
events. Without these donations a lot of the
activities would be different.
The Elders are delighted to see their created
items around the houses and also in the
Community, as our dedicated craft group in
Overbeek Lodge, have entered many items
in the local Lilydale show. From pompom
creations, to mosaic plates or flowerpots,
they are admired by all. Last year we
received awards from the items we entered
into the Lilydale Show. This included two
pieces of work in the special needs category
that not only received 1st prizes but then
went on to win two Best Exhibition awards.
The volunteers, staff and Elders were
presented with ribbons and trophies. The
items that won these awards included, a
mosaic “The migrant ship” and a Christmas
nativity scene.
These awards would not have been possible
without the help we receive here at
DutchCare from our volunteers.
But it is not only crafty things we do, as not
everyone is interested in that. We have the
reminiscing sessions with staff and
volunteers, to discuss the different things we
remember and keep the mind active. The
exercise groups, to help to keep the body
strong, are there to promote independence
as long as possible.
So from the bottom of our hearts, as I think I
speak on behalf of all, a huge THANK YOU
is coming your way.

Student Hosts Wanted
We are expecting 2 new students to arrive fresh from Holland in August and are looking for a
family that would like to welcome them into their home.
We have recently won a national award for this exchange program with Holland and we
depend on the wider community to find a suitable address for them to stay during their
placement at Margriet Manor and Overbeek Lodge.
They will work at DutchCare from August 19 until January 3rd and ideally their hosting family
is located nearby our Kilsyth homes, but we may also consider an address further away,
depending on the circumstances.
DutchCare will reimburse the hosting family for boarding costs, which include 3 meals per
day.

acknowledged the quality programs and
service delivery. The reviewers spoke with a
large number of staff and Elders who
provided positive feedback. I would like to
especially acknowledge the volunteers who
assisted us on the day and for their ongoing
support. Many thanks to all those involved
in the Quality Review and Congratulations to
all for an outstanding result.
Our volunteers would have received their
new handbooks by now. The information
has been updated and the booklets all have
DutchCare’s new logo. We have received a
positive response, most stating that the
booklets contain very useful information.
The volunteer program continues to operate
not only in metropolitan Melbourne but also
in regional areas such as Bendigo,
Gippsland, Geelong and Ballarat. Festivities
and training sessions continue so this makes
for a busy time for volunteers.
Planned Activity Programs at both Kilsyth
and Carrum Downs enjoy regular activities
with our Elders. The range of activities is
very dependent on our Elder’s interests.
Through the MiCare arm of DutchCare, we
are interested in expanded groups for Elders
from different cultural backgrounds. Elders
from a range of backgrounds have shown an
interest
in
receiving
services
from
DutchCare because of the organisations
excellent reputation.
Last month, DutchCare, through MiCare
along with New Hope Foundation submitted
for funding from the Commonwealth
Government to expand the Community
Visitors Scheme. The management team of
the two organisations combined have over
100 years of experience in delivering
services to people from an ethnic
background. There is much knowledge that
this team can bring to help other smaller
ethnic communities to respond to the needs
of their Elders.
Our current staff are being trained in cultural
In the last newsletter, the introduction of
Consumer Directed Care was discussed as
the biggest change proposed in the way
home based services will be provided to our
Elders. Since then, the team at DutchCare
have tried to find out as much information as
possible as to how Consumer Directed Care
will work. It seems that some organisations
have already tackled the models and have
come up with ways to provide the program
which best meets the needs of the people
they service. This will be the same with
DutchCare; we are trying to think through
the issues surrounding consumer directed
care, so as to develop a model which
responds specifically to our Elders.
Consumer (or self) directed care allows
people to have greater control over their own
lives by allowing them, to the extent that
they are able and wish so to do, to make
choices about the types of care services
they access and the delivery of those
services, including who will deliver the
services and when.
The whole team at DutchCare is working on
this, not only Case Managers, but also other
members of the community services team,
such as our Social Support Coordinator and
the Planned Activity Group Coordinators. In
addition, staff in Accounts, IT and
Residential Care are also thinking through
the issues. We understand that Consumer
Directed Care may eventually apply across
all
aged
care
services
and
that
administration and finance support is
important to its success.
In March of this year, the Community
Visitors Scheme, the Friendly Visitors
Scheme,
Planned
Activity
groups,
Community Aged Care Packages and the
Extended Care Aged Care Packages in the
Eastern Region underwent a quality review.
All programs achieved excellent results
which is indicative of the team’s good work.
We were very pleased with the comments
and responses from the reviewers who

Foundation which provides Settlement
Services and community Aged Care for
refugees and migrants. Using New Hope’s
contacts with the minority groups, MiCare
plans to work collaboratively with its new
partner to overcome the social isolation of
Elders through the establishment of new cells
of Community Visitors.
These new volunteers will visit people who
receive Home Care Packages. In doing so,
they will be recognising the physical, mental
and spiritual comfort derived from the use of
first languages, food from the country of
origin, specific customs or activities from the
‘home country’, and common religious
affiliations.
The outcome of the CVS application should
be known by the end of June 2013.
Alexis Hughes
Policy Officer
DutchCare, through MiCare, has applied for
80 new Community Visitors to serve Elders
from Iran, Iraq, Burma, Cambodia, Korea,
Afghanistan, Eritrea, Sudan and Indonesia.
There are over 4600 people from these
countries in Victoria who are over the age of
65. Ninety-two percent live in the Melbourne
metropolitan region.
MiCare has already ascertained that people
from a non-English speaking background are
seriously under represented in residential
aged care. This means many, if not most,
Elders are being looked after at home.
Those from minority groups have little or no
access to services from their own
communities because they are too small to
establish their own supports. This is where
MiCare and the New Hope Foundation come
into play.
MiCare has entered into a memorandum of
understanding with the New Hope

they remember us in their travels.
Other staff members are continuing their
career and are studying hard to get the
qualifications they need. DutchCare has
always encouraged our staff to learn more
about their work, so that they can give the
best possible care to our Elders. Education is
a very important part of life and we will
provide in-house education as well as
external. The introduction of a new
computerised care-plan program in our
facilities has shown that our staff members
are capable of taking on a challenge. All staff
will have the instructions to become
confident to enter the information in the
computer, so that communication about the
care is available to all.
And that is how our lives in the homes,
Margriet Manor and Overbeek Lodge, roll
on. With the help of our family members,
volunteers and staff we continue to look
after our Elders and try to make a difference
in their life.
Joke van der Staay,
Manager Residential Services East.
The new year started with a “long hot
summer”. Although expected, it always
takes a bit of time to get used to it. We even
had a couple of Total Fire Ban days in early
January. But in general our Elders enjoyed
the warmer weather. Sitting outside to get
the feeling of fresh air is a good experience
after the long winter. Elders and staff shared
the space with meals outdoors at times.
Holiday time also means that there were
more children around than usual, as our staff
can take their children. The children give a
different feel to the place, some are very
eager to share their stories with the Elders
and others just play together. This will then
give the Elders the opportunity to observe
them and perhaps think about the changes in
the present younger generation compared
with their youth, and this can then become a
topic of conversation with staff.
Australia Day was celebrated in the
traditional manner with a BBQ in Overbeek
Lodge and Meat Pies and chips in Margriet
Manor. As most of our Elders have lived for
a long time in Australia, this day has for them
a special meaning too. For some it was the
day when they took on Australian
Citizenship. Staff joined in the party and it
was a great atmosphere.
In February we had another number of
celebrations. As Easter would be early this
year, Shrove Tuesday was on the 11th
February and all our Elders (and staff)
enjoyed the traditional pancakes. Then
Valentine’s day on the 17th. DutchCare
provided a lovely morning coffee and
afternoon tea for the many couples in our
facilities. Love was all around in pictures and
food and it was enjoyed by all, not only the
couples.
Our Staff
Over the years we had some staff, who
started fresh and never left until retirement.
And that is what happened this year. We had
to say goodbye to staff who earned their long
service leave and decided to call it a day and
enjoy their “old age”. They were sent off with
a big morning coffee and a gift to make sure
Activities and Events
Although I am reasonably new in this role at
DutchCare, I would like to say, that
DutchCare has been extremely lucky to
have so many volunteers over the years,
who are willing to help us in many ways.
Without the many volunteers, many of the
planned activities, outings, special events
and Kiosks, would not be a part of our
Elder’s lives. Each volunteer puts in
numerous hours of their time, which hugely
assists in enhancing our Elder’s quality of

News from the Beatrix Village Committee
All residents can use the hall for big
celebrations. They don’t have to pay for the
hall only give a donation. You do have to
book the date, so it will not clash with other
functions.
Last year November some of the residents
formed a small choir, to lead the singing of
the “Carols by Candlelight” .It was quite
successful and some people wanted to
continue with the choir. So Susan Ponton
and Robert Kop are at the moment
organizing it .Liesbeth Brant is willing to play
the music. It is just for pleasure and to help
with the celebrations we have in the hall. The
next Village Committee celebration will be
Orange Day in April.
The New Year is well and truly on its way.
And we celebrated it with Australia Day. The
village Committee held a barbeque which
was attended by 48 people and some
children.
As we had recently quite a few bushfires in
Victoria, we held a small raffle for the CFA.
We collected $150.00 which was donated to
the Montrose CFA. All who attended ate well
and had a great time.
Lately we have received tulips twice from Els
and Nick Bakker via DutchCare and
although they don’t last long in our hot
summer days (in Holland they bloom in 15
degrees) they are appreciated and a nice
surprise.
As we announced last year, every first
Wednesday morning of the month, we will be
having a morning coffee for the Village
residents. It is just to socialize and to
welcome new residents if there are any. This
month it is Winn Carter of unit 38.
Now we have news about the Art and Craft
Group. Annette Walt and Brian and Julie
O’Connor kindly donated the tables and a
sewing machine and overlocker. We thank
them for their kindness. DutchCare provided
us with an iron, no ironing board yet and let
us purchase a new sewing machine. Irene,
Selma and myself went shopping. We bought
a good not too fancy machine and also
scissors, needles, pins, threads and all kind
of things we will be in need for. The first day
was a show and talk day –if you are good in
making something bring it along and show
us, somebody else might be glad to learn
how to make it. We have an average of 10
people and twice we have had origami
lessons and folded gift boxes and butterflies
and we also spent a morning making
greeting cards
Brian O'Connor is in hospital and has been
very sick, but is now improving. We wish him
a speedy recovery.
Harry Janssen celebrated his 80th birthday
on Feb. 9th. Happy Birthday Harry and many
more happy years here among us. He held a
party here in the hall.
Easter has passed and we are now
concentrating on our next social which will be
Orange Day on the 2nd of May. On that day
we celebrate the Dutch Queens birthday, but
she has recently announced that she will
abdicate the throne in favour of her son
Willem Alexander and his wife Maxima. We
will be celebrating the crowning of the new
King and Queen instead.
We will show the Investiture ceremony of
King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima
on the big screen in the Beatrix Hall.
Greeting from your Village Committee

intelligence, which will enable them to
transfer their skills across to other ethnic
groups. The service priority with these staff
will remain with the Dutch, but when they
are able to, they will help with MiCare.
Cultural diversity training helps us to
understand that our culture matters to us in
different ways and that there are aspects to
our culture which bring familiarity and
comfort. Importantly we also learn about the
core values of our culture which helps us to
understand our world, relationships, family,
employment or vocation, how things work
and the importance we place on this.
MiCare is also trying to reach people
through word of mouth and face to face.
MiCare along with DutchCare and
WindMeals has booked information stalls at
the annual Cultural Diversity Information
Day held at the Melbourne Town Hall on
Saturday 27th April 2013. This will be an
excellent opportunity to see and hear about
the range of aged care services on offer to
Elders from an ethnic background. Many of
our own staff will be there on the day.

Manager Community and MiCare Services
As part of quality management, file reviews
have been completed for all community
services areas. This includes CACP, EACH,
PAG and Friendly Visiting programs.
Reports on findings have been completed
and provided to staff. This has worked in
conjunction with the review of policies and
the outcome is that work practices are
increasingly consistent across the regions.
An annual schedule of internal audits has
been devised for community services as it is
considered that an internal program can be
specific providing relevant data that will
allow us to improve our services.
The manager project support is participating
in a workforce development pilot program for
the implementation of Active Service Model
and Diversity Planning in organisations. This
program is run by Eastern Metropolitan
Region HACC. The Active Service Model
and Diversity Planning are requirements of
HACC programs.
On 27th March the project support manager
attended a workshop in Sydney hosted by
Consumers Health Forum of Australia on
informed consent in Health care for CALD
consumers. This program is funded by Bupa
Health Foundation to identify gaps in the
information currently available to consumers
about informed consent, and to develop
resources to empower them to make
informed choices about their healthcare.

ago and therefore this hugely beneficial
service was lost. Fortunately, the government
has re-introduced the trial of a similar
program via Medicare Local though with
more stringent boundaries and outcome
requirements. It is called the ‘Psychological
Support Program.’ Given our history with the
Transitional Support Program, Avondrust
Lodge was selected as one of six facilities in
the region to be part of this trial. Fifteen
Elders/Families are able to access up to four
one hours sessions. If you feel that this
program would benefit you, please approach
our Unit Manager, Lifestyle Coordinator or
myself.
Surveys
Thank you to all those Elders and staff that
completed and returned facility surveys
conducted in the October-December quarter.
A summary with responses was mailed to
families with the monthly accounts. Further to
this I would like to briefly outline progress
and comments: 1. I was unable to locate all
the instruction manuals for the TV’s/DVD/CD
players but made copies available of those
that were there (we will endeavor to ensure
copies of instruction manuals are made
available with future purchases) 2. Staff
awareness of confidentiality, environmental
noise and resident entertainment has been
addressed with relevant staff 3. The Lifestyle
team is focused on After Hours/Weekend
entertainment 4. The large gum in the park at
the back is a ‘heritage’ tree and council is
reluctant to trim let alone remove it. It
appears to be in a healthy state and does not
overhang the building 5. A larger disabled
parking spot suggestion is still outstanding.
Keep well and keep smiling.

intersections of corridors because they blow
in four directions. It will avoid the common
complaint from Elders sitting in the dining
rooms that cold air is blowing directly on
them. Instead it will simply waft in from the
corridors and the dining room wall units can
be utilized additionally for extremely hot
conditions. Please remember that there are
also portable air conditioning units available
that our maintenance person can fit in any
Elder’s room particularly when they are
unwell or greatly affected by the heat.
Letters were mailed with the monthly
accounts to advise that Avondrust Lodge will
have a new supplying pharmacy following
review of an expiring contract. The new
pharmacist Rick has provided services to
other facilities within DutchCare and has
established a positive, helpful and kind
reputation amongst Elders, families and staff.
If you have any concerns or questions, Rick
has assured he will do anything possible to
address matters promptly. With the
introduction of the new pharmacy, Avondrust
Lodge has also had an application approved
by DHS for an imprest. An imprest is a
system where a range of stock medications
are stored that Elders tend to require such as
antibiotics. This is helpful because it will often
avoid delays in preparing and delivering
medications following a new order by the GP.
Some time ago Avondrust Lodge was able to
access the Transitional Support Program in
terms of assisting Elders and their families
with the struggles of admission to an Aged
Care Facility. It was also a service for our
longer term Elders where depression was
assessed and strategies implemented as
required. Unfortunately the Government
withdrew financial support for this
Transitional Support Program about a year

unannounced assessment visit was
conducted at Avondrust. The two assessors
spent the day reviewing standards related to
module 12 - Pain management, Palliative
Care, Infection Control, Education,
Continuous Improvement, Auditing,
Cleaning, Interviews with Elders, Families
and Staff, Documentation and Policies.
Some of their comments included that there
were robust systems in place for infection
control, pain management and palliative
care. There was evidence of involvement,
documentation, training, external support
and satisfaction about the way we manage
palliative care. There is also evidence of
tracking, reporting, learning, follow up and
so on. The review went very well so
congratulations to the whole team at
Avondrust.
What’s new at Avondrust
Since the last newsletter a significant air
conditioning system has been installed in the
van Gogh and Rembrandt households. It is
important to direct our sincere thanks to the
Auxiliary as they donated the funds to have
this system installed following Board
approval of the proposal. We have been
able to count on the Auxiliary many times in
the past and once again they have been
able to contribute to the wellbeing of our
community living in Avondrust Lodge.
With the facility electrical circuits not able to
cope with individual A/C units in each room,
a system which covers all the common
areas is the next best thing. We have
installed a cassette ceiling unit in the
Welcome again to another update on the
goings-on at Avondrust Lodge.
Elders & Families
Now that the extreme heat of the summer
appears to be over, I have noticed that
Elders and families are making great use of
the outside shaded areas. In fact, the
Lifestyle team have set up several meals for
Elders to be served in the gazebo in the
main courtyard as well as outside the kiosk.
It’s been lovely to see Elders enjoy
something out of the ordinary at times. It has
also been a pleasure to see so many
children, both from staff and families during
the holiday times. Most Elders enjoy their
interaction and watching them play.
Please be aware that Reggie, our dog in
Keukenhof and Delftplein households, is
ageing and quickly becoming increasingly
frail. His hind hips give way at times but
please be assured that we will not allow him
to be in ongoing discomfort. He is on
appropriate medications which we are
monitoring for effectiveness. Particularly in
view of children, please consider that Reggie
needs a quiet and gentle approach these
days. Milo, our new dog in the Rembrandt
and van Gogh households is starting to
settle in well. He has had some recent
specialist training to ensure the
appropriateness of his new home. Elders are
enjoying his company and youthful nature.
