The Babbling Brook
The Babbling Brook The Newsletter of the Brookdale Homeowners’ Association Let us all welcome the newest Board members: John Waller, President; David Dragon, Vice President; Barbara Sullivan, Secretary. A letter from John Waller, Board President ….. August 2009 Dear Brookdale Neighbors, Inside this issue: BHA Social Plan/Recaps 2-4 July 4th Recap & Thanks 5 July 4th photo collage 6-7 Brookdale Stars 8 Dinner Tonight 9 Pink Sistas Recap & Event 10-11 Howdy Neighbor 12 Crime 12 Clothing Sale 13 It is with great pleasure that I introduce myself as the new BHA President. My wife (Janet), daughter (Jensine) and I moved into Brookdale in the summer of 2004, at it has been our best move. I‘m a native New Yorker (J! E! T! S!) who moved to Illinois in 1987 and to Naperville in 1993, and can honestly say that Brookdale has been the best place to live. Since moving to Naperville, I‘ve become involved in several community-minded endeavors. I served on our church council for almost 9 years – the last 3 as president - and helped oversee a major expansion project. The three of us volunteered at Loaves and Fishes every month for the past 7 years delivering food to one of the senior living centers in Naperville. We most recently have volunteered at Feed My Starving Children in Aurora, and are looking forward to the upcoming ―Brookdale Night‖ at FMSC. But, enough about me… Despite the soggy conditions, our annual July 4th Parade was extremely wellattended, and I‘d like to thank ―Uncle John‖ for driving his convertible (with the top down!) in the rain. There have been some changes to the BHA board recently, and our newlyconstituted board is looking forward to serving your needs in the years to come. I‘d like to take this time to extend thanks and gratitude to our ―retiring‖ board members - Lori Jones and Sheila Fleming – for their service. Next Issue is September! NEW INFO FOR ADVERTISERS & ARTICLE SUBMISSIONS Check out all our supportive advertisers!!! Back Cover I‘m sure many of you can empathize when I say that this has been – for my family – ―The Summer of Way Too Much Activity‖, and I say that in a good way. Between sports practices and games, camps, work and driving hither and yon it seems that there‘s just not enough time to complete everything we need to before we go to bed. And yet, I feel like there‘s still some time to volunteer in the community and do ―good works‖ to benefit others. I am hopeful that many of you feel the same way, as there will be many opportunities to get involved in our community in the upcoming months. Speaking for the board members of the BHA, I would like to invite everyone to consider volunteering. We can never have enough help or input from our neighbors. Sincerely, John Waller Page 2 The Babbling Brook Continued on page 4 The Babbling Brook Page 3 Social News continued/Future Events Page 4 The Babbling Brook ~From Lisa Burke On the next couple of pages are a collage of photos from our July 4th Parade. Depart- ing from Hill Middle School at 11:00am the 33 parade participates made their way through Brookdale and ended at the Brookdale Pool for a picnic. Page 6 The Babbling Brook A special thank you to the many individuals and organizations that helped to make the parade such a huge hit. The success of this long-standing Brookdale tradition is due to the strong support of the Naperville and Brookdale communities. We look forward to another successful parade in 2010! Rain rain, go or stay….we’re gonna have fun anyway! The Babbling Brook Page 7 Contributions are welcomed & encouraged. Please send [email protected] Junior Girl Scout Troop 1942 completed a Community Service Project by helping lay the bricks on the west extension of the Naperville Riverwalk this summer. The bricks will replace the existing asphalt pathway along the Riverwalk west to the Jefferson Avenue Bridge. In 1981, Naperville residents gathered to lay the bricks of the original Riverwalk. The community came together again in 2000 to build the Riverwalk east extension from Washington Street to Hillside Road. This improvement to the Riverwalk is being built using recycled bricks from the Riverwalk Phase I Rehabilitation Project. Participating troop members included: Katie Reed, Ashley Smurawski and Lizzie Verrando. Leaders Jean Faulhaber and Monica Reed and Girl Scout Cadette Amy Verrando also assisted with the project. Congratulations! Leon Krejci of Westminster! Mr. Krejci‟s oil painting “Young Polish Girl” was selected to be included in the Naperville Art League‟s “Artist Among Us” exhibit. The exhibit opened late June and ran for one month at the Schoenherr Gallery in Wentz Concert Hall & Fine Arts Center at North Central College. Mr. Krejci recently donated one of his paintings to St.Thomas Church for their “Holes for Hope” silent auction taking place August 31st. We first showed Mr. Krejci‟s work in our April „09 newsletter. A website to view his work, in color, is listed to the right. It was previously the Red Door Tavern. We were there just after 5 pm and with a few people at the bar and one other family dining, it was perfect timing. They were out of their beer special, because the waitress mentioned that it had been a busy college kid weekend. But, no college kids around at our early dining hour. They have a kid‟s menu that competes with the rest: grilled cheese, mini corn dogs (dog treats), puppy burgers, macaroni and cheese and chicken tenders. Kid‟s meals were $3.95-$4.95 and included the drink. Ryan (8) had the dog treats, fries and lemonade and rates it 4 out of 5 forks. The fries were steak fries, not his favorite, but the waitress kept his lemonade full and the mini corn dogs were good. Nick (10) also had the dog treats, fries and lemonade. He rates it 4 our of 5 forks and ate his fries and as many of his brother‟s fries that he could get. (Mom was snitching them, too.) Dad had a cheeseburger, fries and a beer. He rates it 4 and really enjoyed his burger. Mom had Polly‟s Pecan Grape Salad with chicken. It was good, but after tasting Dad‟s cheeseburger, she would go for that next time. It was delicious! She rates it a 4. The waitress was very attentive, the food was quick and the kids were happy to be able to see sports on TV. They have an extensive beer menu and now have pizza as well. We‟ll have to try that the next time! A Chihuahua, a Doberman and a Bulldog ... are in a bar having a bowl of water when a beautiful female Collie comes up to them and says, "Whoever can say liver and cheese in a sentence can be my sweetie" So the Doberman says, "I love liver and cheese." The Collie replies, "That's not good enough." The Bulldog says, "I hate liver and cheese." She says, "That's not creative enough." Finally, the Chihuahua says, "Liver alone . . . cheese mine." Page 12 The Babbling Brook Crime seems to be on the rise in our neighborhood. Just recently my son & his friend‘s bikes were stolen from the pool...and later recovered. I‘m aware of atleast 3 other bikes that were stolen from open garages….in broad daylight. And two other that went missing from the pool—one of those I‘m aware was recovered. At large I‘ve heard vandalism reported on Trent Avenue, Foxhill and Manchester— mailboxes wrecked, planters & statuary ruined. I spoke with a resident Police Officer who stressed that each incident needs to be reported. Call the non-emergency number for the police 420-6666 to report a crime. The bike activity has been recent—the month of July. The vandalism was early summer. If anyone would like to email about other or more specific incidences, I will publish in Septembers newsletter. Please put ‗CRIME‘ in the subject line. Thank you… [email protected] The Babbling Brook Page 12 Classifieds WANTED We need Field Reporters of all ages to share news!
