One class for 18 days ... working closely
together to apply your knowledge immediately
in the TV studio, the computer lab or an
orthopedic clinic. Living and breathing your
subject, whether by preparing to present your
psychology research at a regional conference
or interviewing refugees in Nepal. Your
experience at Tusculum will be different
from that at almost any other college in
the United States.
It’s intense. But so is life.
Giving back is also part of life. Knowing there’s
a larger meaning and a higher purpose.
Tusculum is one of the best colleges you could
choose if you seek, not only to prepare for a
career, but to become an enlightened citizen
and a better person.

Financial Aid
If you and Tusculum are the right fit, we’ll try to make it happen
for you. Tusculum is one of the lowest-cost private colleges in
the country (2007-08 tuition, room and board total $24,295
to $25,455). Financial aid can reduce that figure significantly.
More than 85 percent of residential students receive some
form of financial aid, based on need, academics, athletic
talent, service and/or leadership. Find out how to apply at

Where else can you focus on one subject at
a time, exploring more ways than you ever
imagined to get to the heart of it? Discuss a
topic in the morning and apply it in the field
that afternoon, in research, an internship or a
civic or faith-based project. Take an entire class
off campus—even in another country. Bring
your curiosity and wade right in!
Exactly What You’re Looking For
One class at a time. Get ready for hands-on experience, personal attention
and real thinking. The only school in the United States with both a focused
calendar and a Civic Arts approach.
The first school in Tennessee. Established in 1794 and a pioneer in
opportunities for women and minorities. True to our Presbyterian roots, we
strive to develop citizens distinguished by academic excellence, public service
and high moral character.
The comfort of the South. Comfortable climate. Friendly people in a small
community. A safe, beautiful campus.
Mountains and rivers. In the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains in
Greeneville, Tennessee, near whitewater rafting, hiking, skiing and more.
Students. 885 undergraduates from 36 states and 19 countries. Ready to
make a difference in their lives and the lives of others.
Faculty. One for every 16 students, with an average class size of 14. Creative
teachers and dedicated mentors.
Alumni. Contributing in business, education, health, ministry and more. 95
percent say Tusculum prepared them well for their current job or graduate
studies.
Our classrooms. Museums, physical therapy clinics, professional and
scholarly conferences. Even Europe. Beginning to see the advantage of taking
one class at a time?
Internships. Very convenient with our focused calendar. The experience and
networking open real career possibilities.
Research. Also encouraged at Tusculum. Explains why all alumni who have
reported applying to graduate school have been accepted.
Service projects. From mentoring at-risk youth to missionary work in India.
Part of the curriculum and part of life.
Honors and leadership. An Honors Program, a national service scholarship
Bonner Leaders Program, the Center for Civic Advancement and the
Religious Life Center.
Resources. A newly renovated library with computer labs. Two museums on
campus. Nine buildings on the National Historic Register. Fine Arts Center,
Niswonger Commons and some of the best Division II athletic facilities in
the country.
Living on campus. As important as what you learn in class. Lifelong
friendships. Traditional residence halls and apartments, co-ed and single sex,
plus theme housing. The best of the new (cable TV, Internet and more) on a
beautiful 140-acre historic campus.
“Let
me get
this straight—
professors at
Tusculum
would just hang out
at home with
their students?”
S
Exactly!
Sure, lots of small colleges talk about the warm,
caring community you’ll find. But imagine
what happens when a dedicated professor
shares his or her enthusiasm for a subject with
one small group of students at a time. You’ll
truly get to know each other, working side
by side on common interests. Just ask, and
someone will always be there with advice or
resources—even the president of the college!
Enjoy. Explore.
So what’s there to do on campus?
Enjoy game shows (with prizes!),
comedians, movies, poetry readings,
casino nights or international coffee
hours. Root for the Pioneers against
archrival Carson-Newman—in the
football game and in the annual
blood drive competition. Join the
Anime Club or the Business Club—or
start your own club. Enjoy the bands,
games and cookouts at Spring Fling.
Explore issues of faith at the Theologian-in-Residence lecture series or
join the weekly Bible study. Or play
volleyball, Frisbee or hang out in the
quad on a warm, sunny day—that is,
when you’re not rock climbing, skiing,
fishing, white-water rafting, hiking,
shopping or playing paintball nearby.
Lead. Create. Serve.
If you’re looking for more of a
challenge, it’s easy to get involved at
Tusculum. Edit the school newspaper,
organize campus events, become
a resident assistant, direct a play,
lead Freshman Orientation, hold an
office in the Student Government
Association, or DJ for the campus
radio station. Join the many students
and professors who participate in
the wider community through programs of the YMCA, area churches
and schools and the Little Theatre of
Greeneville, Inc.. Or lead through service by tutoring, mentoring, organizing
a hunger awareness event or leading
construction of a community library.
A Comfortable Home
Choose from six residence halls (single-sex and co-ed), four apartmentstyle complexes, and Women’s Leadership, Religious Life and Multicultural
theme houses. Enjoy Internet connections, cable TV, newly-released movies
and free laundry, plus smoothies and
Starbucks at the Pioneer Perk. No
wonder more than 75 percent of our
students live on campus!
“Are
Pioneer Power
It rocks to be a Pioneer, whether
you’re on a varsity team or cheering
them on. Our athletes excel
consistently, in academics, service
and competition. They’re regularly
recognized as Academic All-Americans®. Over the past four years, the
Pioneer football team has boasted
one of the top rushing defenses in
the country while women’s soccer
was ranked in the top 10 nationally
in 2006. Baseball, soccer and basketball teams have capturted South
Atlantic Conference championships.
In fact, in 2005, every single Pioneer
team posted a winning season! And
it all starts at some of the best NCAA
Division II facilities in the country,
including a new, 2,400-seat baseball
stadium, recently renovated football
and soccer stadium, and the 2,000seat Pioneer Arena.
Work Hard. Play Hard.
It’s not only the varsity studentathletes who enjoy our great facilities
at Tusculum. Anyone can use them to
work out or enjoy more low-key competition. Or take a break and blow off
steam through intramural basketball,
football, soccer, softball, swimming,
ping pong, tennis or volleyball.
I
you telling me
can go hiking
in the mountains
and get back in time
to go into the city
for the evening?”
w
Exactly!
We know we’re biased, but there just may not
be anywhere prettier than Greene County’s
rolling hills and Smoky Mountain views.
Our small, inviting campus with its historic
red-brick buildings and oak-lined pathways
is set perfectly amid opportunities to refresh
and restore yourself in the great outdoors.
Of course, when you want the excitement of
city life, Knoxville and Asheville are just an
hour away.
One Class at a Time
With our focused calendar (“the
block”), you’ll take four different
classes each semester, each for 3 1⁄2
weeks (18 class days) at a time. At
the end of each block, you’ll have a
break. Three optional summer blocks
are also available.
Learn it. Do it.
For 18 days, you’ll immerse yourself
in a subject, become a community
instead of simply a class, and
experience innovative approaches
to teaching and learning. Develop
a business plan for a local banker.
Produce live radio and TV
programs. Conduct muscle strength
and endurance tests. Evaluate air
quality. Design a website. Have your
script read by a professional
screenwriter. Edit a national literary
magazine for professional writers.
Because it’s not memorizing tons
of material that will help you reach
your goals in life; it’s learning to
problem solve, speak and write
effectively, work as a team and
develop leadership skills.
About the Civic Arts
The abilities and attitudes encouraged
by the block are not only essential to
career success, but to a life of active
participation in your community and
the world. You’ve heard how the
“liberal arts” will make you well
rounded. Take that a step further—
become well rounded with a purpose.
All we do at Tusculum—the way
we teach, what we teach, the way
we live—educates you in the art of
becoming a contributing citizen of
integrity and ideals. One who will
positively affect the lives of all around
you. The opportunities of the focused
calendar, our core curriculum, service
learning, in-depth programs of study,
self governance—no other school lives
out a commitment to the Civic Arts
as Tusculum does.
The World Is
Your Classroom
Travel, research, service projects and
internships fit right into the block.
As a class, tour NBC Studios in New
York City, see history come alive at
Williamsburg and Plymouth Rock,
study flora and fauna in Costa Rica,
work with original texts at Tusculum’s
Andrew Johnson Museum or tour
regional childcare centers. Conduct
group or individual research in
education or biology. Start a regional
conference on creative writing and
literature. Attend the Salzburg
Seminar on Global Citizenship or
earn a scholarship to study in London
for a semester. Develop a community
needs survey and create a program to
address what you’ve discovered.
As for internships ... gain clinical
experience through a paid internship
with the NFL’s Tennessee Titans. Intern in a law office, marketing agency
or CPA firm. Work for a magazine
publisher. Spend the equivalent of
almost a full year student teaching.
“Tusculum
understands that
I
want to make
a difference on
and off the field?”
S
Exactly!
Students from around the world (19 countries
at Tusculum!) can’t wait to get out in the
field when they see our impressive athletic
facilities. Yet as excellent as our varsity athletics
are, those who appreciate Tusculum the most
are the ones who are as motivated in class as
out. As Tennessee’s first college, we know the
greatest factor in success is having the drive to
work hard for something you believe in.
“Tusculum
is
Exactly
what
I
was
looking for!”
Something unexpected happens as Tusculum changes you and you change
Tusculum. It’s more than simply meeting new people, getting involved in
new activities and obtaining a college degree. It’s realizing that you can use
what you’ve learned to make a difference … to leave the world better than
you found it.

Honors and Leadership
Looking for a community within a
community? Our Honors Program
enables academically talented,
committed students to share in
stimulating honors courses, travel
and social events together. And our
Bonner Leaders Program is part of a
national network offering exceptional
opportunities to students dedicated
to service, global social justice and
leadership.
Just Right
If you’re seeking a smaller college
away from urban stress and suburban
sameness, Tusculum is just the right
size and in just the right place.
A small community like ours
encourages you to be who you are
and to try new things, knowing you’ll
never be lost in the crowd. Our
beautiful location in the foothills
of the Great Smoky Mountains
in eastern Tennessee is not only
relaxing, but fun. Our hometown
of Greeneville offers small-town
safety and friendliness, along with
shopping, restaurants and culture.
From here, it’s as easy to explore
the great outdoors as it is to enjoy
an evening of entertainment in
Johnson City.
Friends from Across
the Globe
You’ll simply be amazed at how
many different people you’ll meet
at Tusculum. Students from 36 states
and 19 countries, diverse in background, race, religion and interests.
Instead of simply hanging out with
the same type of friends you had
in high school, you may have a
roommate from Jamaica, find a best
friend from New York City, explore
new music and food introduced to
you by a teammate, or go home to
a friend’s farm on weekends. Reach
out from your comfort zone a bit
and you’ll be rewarded, not just with
lifetime friendships, but with friendships that will open your eyes to
the world.

After Tusculum
Don’t choose Tusculum simply
because we’re different. Choose us
because the difference means you’ll
be ready for whatever the future
may hold. One graduate went from
missionary work in Japan to become
a successful entrepreneur. One is
a BOC-certified athletic trainer in
Florida. Another is doing pastoral
work in California after earning a
degree from Princeton Theological
Seminary. Still others are teaching in
high schools and colleges, playing
Major League baseball and working
for the U.S. Securities and Exchange
Commission.
The experience you’ll gain at
Tusculum will help you step right into
a career if you choose. Almost threequarters of recent alumni seeking
employment obtained a position in
their field in less than nine months.
The focus and discipline encouraged at
Tusculum are also perfect for graduate
school. Half of the respondents to our
alumni survey who graduated in the
past 10 years report applying to grad
school—all were accepted!
Alumni are succeeding in these programs and many others:
