General Manager’s
Report
By Greg Sullivan
Memberships Moving at RHCC
After a couple of years with limited activity in the membership
department, we are now seeing a significant increase in demand
for memberships at the club. So far in 2012 we have received six
applications for Junior Memberships and five applications for regular
equity golf memberships. Improved golf conditions, incentive
programs, new membership programs and increased outreach efforts
have all contributed to the increase in demand.
The new Single Junior Executive membership, which offers golfers
under the age of 45 an opportunity to join the club with no upfront
deposit and substantially reduced dues, has been exceptionally
popular. There are now only a handful of these memberships
available and they will likely be sold out by the end of the year.
Another extremely popular program has been our Designee Program.
This program allows an applicant to use the club for six months, have
full family golfing and club privileges, without having to pay the
initiation fee. After six months, the applicant can pay the initiation
fee and join as a full member, or leave without any obligation. This
is a great way for new applicants to use the club and see if RHCC is
right for them. Virtually every person who has enrolled in this
program has purchased a full membership at the end of the six
month period.
Maintaining demand for membership will continue to be a top
priority and I want to thank all of you who have brought new
members to our club! Just a reminder, all primary sponsors of new
Junior Executive or Equity Members receive up to $2000 in green fee
and food and beverage credit. If you have any questions about any of
our membership programs, please contact me personally or Shannon
Diamond in our membership sales department.
Respectfully,
Greg Sullivan

Membership Update
by Shannon Diamond
Do you know someone who is planning a special
event? If so, Rolling Hills Country Club could be
the perfect venue. RHCC regularly hosts weddings, birthday parties, business meetings, fundraisers, anniversaries, golf tournaments, and all
other types of special occasions for both members
and non-members alike.
Most people don’t even think to consider RHCC for hosting an outside
event because we are an exclusive private club. However, like most traditional private clubs, RHCC does allow events for non-members as long as
the organization or individual is sponsored by a current member of the
club, and the event does not displace or conflict with our members enjoyment of their club.
Any member in good standing may sponsor an event, and it is probably
easier than you might think. As a sponsor, you are not required to attend
the event, nor do the charges for the event post to your club account.
Rather, you must simply complete a brief questionnaire at the conclusion
of the event confirming your knowledge and sponsorship of the event.
And a benefit to you as the member sponsoring the event, the event’s food
and beverage spend will go towards your quarterly food and beverage
minimum!
Outside events are beneficial to RHCC as we are not only able to generate
additional income for the club, but they also present a great opportunity
to showcase our services and amenities to members of the local community, some of whom may be interested in membership.
If you have any questions about event sponsorship, or if you would like
me to follow up directly with a potential event planner, please feel free to
contact me or Kellie Davenport at (310) 326-4343.

Men’s Stag Day
The first Men’s Stag Day of the year was a hit! Players negotiated our difficult course set
up in a partners better ball format. After the round everybody enjoyed a grilled steak.
Cigar lovers received a cigar as part of the event and partook while they enjoyed the new
putting green. Mark your calendars for the next one coming up on June 20th.
The new practice green is open so now is a
perfect time to pick up a new putter and work
on your stroke. Turn in your old putter to the
golf shop and receive up to $20 credit towards
the purchase of a new putter. All old putters
will be donated to The First Tee program.
We have some great opportunities to try NEW
product in April. We will have demonstration
days with Taylormade and Cleveland Golf ’s
finest products.

On April 11, Cleveland Golf will be at RHCC
from 10-2 with their full line of products.
Some highlights include their retro Cleveland
Classic driver and back by popular demand,
the new and improved Cleveland Classic 588
wedge.
On April 20, Taylormade will be out in full
force from 10-3. Stop by and try woods and
irons from the Rocketballz and R11 family.
These fairway woods and drivers are the hottest
product in golf.
Rule tip of the month – Contrary to popular
belief the rock wall behind hole # 1 green is an
immovable obstruction. It is true many years
ago that wall was declared an “integral part of
the course” which meant no relief. However,
that rule changed two years ago and the wall
was considered an obstruction just like all the
other man-made objects surrounding other
flower beds on the course. You may take relief
at the nearest point no nearer the hole. Often
this will put you behind the flower bed high on
the hill.

Women’s Club News
by Karen Roa
Nobody does it better than the ladies who volunteer their time
organizing our annual key golf tournaments each year. On March
13th, 116 women again enjoyed themselves playing in the “Spring
Fling” Member/Guest event. Despite early gray skies, the tee boxes
had colorful spring garden ornaments and flowers, and even the
Easter Bunny made an appearance handing out treats on the course.
Prizes were related to spring time activities, and the co-chairpersons,
Susan Goldstein, Timme Gunderlock, Sherry Brown, and Karen Odom were all adorned in
springtime pastel colored hats which kept everyone reminded that spring is indeed upon
us. Because we have so many imaginative and creative ladies in our club, our reputation for
attention to every minute detail reflecting the theme of our events is legendary.
For 13 years, Ann Cullen has organized the “Rally for the Cure” fundraiser with all proceeds
benefiting the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. This year, 45 players played in the
mixer event on March 6th. With non- players also making donations, a total of $1300 was
raised. To date, over $19,000 has been raised by our women’s club for this important cause.
Ann’s continuous dedication each year is appreciated, especially by the many women here at
RHCC who have directly been affected by breast cancer. I hope we can have a record turn
out next year!
The men’s golf committee in reviewing our local golf course Rules, requested that the
women’s club determine if the women’s dress code as it currently exists is still appropriate.
An ad hoc committee comprised of ladies of all age groups was appointed by our President,
Shirley Clark, to study this matter. The consensus was that the dress code should essentially
remain the same. As a reminder, skirts, skorts, Bermuda shorts, culottes, slacks and capris
are all acceptable attire on the golf course, practice range and putting green. Blue denim
jeans, swim or tennis attire, “short-shorts” or skirts shorter than 6” above the top of the knee
are not acceptable. Any halter tops or tops that reveal a bare midriff are also prohibited on
the golf course. The Starter and Pros have been instructed to inform members and/or their
guests prior to teeing off that they may not play if they do not conform. Please be mindful
of our local rules and make sure that both you and your guests are in compliance to avoid
any embarrassing situations.
The children of several members continue
to make us proud of their golfing accomplishments. Jenny and Kristen Coleman,
playing for the University of Colorado
Women’s Golf Team, are having a very
successful spring. Their latest event was
at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate
Women’s Golf Tournament in New
Orleans. They placed 2nd in the 15 team

ber 2, 3 and 4th ranked teams in the country.
We look forward to seeing them back out on our course during spring break. Mackenzie
Perez is beginning to face some stiff competition from her younger brother, Matt, who at 12
years old, recently had a hole in one at the Royal Kaanapali Golf Course in Maui on the 8th
hole. Congratulations Matt! Matt and Mackenzie are of course the grandchildren of Jim
and Marguerite Hussey and the children of Nancy and Jeff Perez.
Congratulations also go to Toni Jeffers who is awaiting the birth of another great grandchild.
Speedy recovery wishes go out to Betty Kirchoff who recently fell and broke her shoulder.
Let’s stay safe and enjoy a lot of springtime golf ladies!

New Putting Green is Now Open!
I would like to thank you all for your patience during these last few months while the new practice putting green has
been growing in. It is now open and ready for play! The putting green is a gathering point of any club and I hope the
members enjoy the new green and spend some time practicing your putting and socializing with your fellow members. For the next month or two the putting green will be a bit slower and bumpier than the greens on the golf course. During this time we
will gradually take down the cutting height and lightly topdress it to match the speed of the putting greens on the rest of the golf course.
The new green has been increased in size and has been built to industry standards; however, to ensure both short and long term success, I will
need your help with just two things.
1. Please stay off the lower area near the clubhouse. This area is not fully mature due to the shade caused by its proximity to the
clubhouse.
2. Please walk around the green when going to and from the driving range. Traffic causes turf to stress and the more we can reduce
the traffic the better.
By avoiding a hundred plus golfers a day walking the same path to and from the driving range we can avoid multiple aerifications during the
peak golfing season.
I hope the putting green will once again serve as a place for our members to practice, meet and talk for years to come.
Respectfully,
Bob Vaughey

Tennis Matters
by Mark Thomas
If you think that tennis balls are all the same, here are
some facts you may or may not already know.
There are two main types of tennis balls: pressurized
and pressureless.
Pressurized tennis balls have a hollow core, filled with
air. Some tennis ball manufactures use nitrogen in the center, because this
air tends to last longer. Pressurized balls will lose their pressure after about a
month or so after opening the pressurized can they come in. As they lose their
pressure, they become “dead” and do not bounce so well.
Pressureless balls have a solid core. These balls are great for anyone
who does not play tennis that often or for use in training. These balls do not
lose their bounce. However, the felt will slowly wear off and they will eventually need to be replaced.
When you buy tennis balls, the container that they come in should be
clearly marked with what kind of balls it contains-regular duty, extra duty, or
high altitude tennis balls. Regular duty tennis balls should be used on clay or
indoor courts. Extra duty balls would get too fuzzy if used on clay courts. Extra
duty tennis balls are used on grass and hard courts. High altitude tennis balls
are used in places like Denver where you are playing 4000 feet or more above
sea level - these balls have different pressure.
Without the yellow fuzziness of tennis balls, the game would be a
whole lot different. The fuzz of the tennis ball creates friction. The fuzziness of
the ball creates drag in the air, making topspin and backspin more pronounced.
Have you ever wondered what the numbers on your tennis balls
meant? The numbers on the tennis balls are simply for identification. The
numbers help you tell your balls apart from other players’ in case they wander
onto another tennis court
During the month of April the Tennis Shop will be selling extra duty
balls for $2.50 per can. While supply lasts, call the shop to reserve yours.
Kellie’s Corner

Thank you to all members who came to our first annual
Spring Wine Tasting! Participants enjoyed sampling
close to fifty different wines and hors d’oeuvres all evening. Some of the wineries that participated included
Silver Oak, Far Niente, Nickel and Nickel, Ferrari Carano,
Robert Craig and many more. This is an event you don’t
want to miss next year!
Coming up at the end of this month, we have our first ever RHCC
Napa Valley Trip. This trip includes a two night stay at the luxurious Meadowood Resort in St. Helena, special winery and vineyard tours, tastings and barrel
samples at five different wineries and lunch on top of Howell Mountain. The
trip is Friday, April 27th to Sunday, April 29th. We have a few spots still available. Please contact Kellie Davenport for more information.

From the Chef
by Chef Matthew
I am pleased to announce a new dinner menu
starting on Wednesday, April 4th. Not only
will we have a new menu, we have decided to
add 15 items for under $20 dollars. Some of
the new menu items under $20 are as follows:
angel hair Bolognese with Romano cheese and
spicy shrimp fettuccini with roasted sweet corn, bell peppers with
a smoked chili cream, porcini crusted tilapia filet with parmesan
risotto, wilted spinach with a warm mushroom chardonnay vinaigrette. Beef and broccoli rice bowl with bean sprouts, water chestnuts
green onions, wild mushrooms with a spicy stir-fry oyster sauce with
steamed brown rice will be a popular item for sure as will be the old
fashioned fish and chips with tartar sauce and malt vinegar. Some
new sandwiches will be a slow roasted prime rib of beef French dip on
toasted French roll with Swiss cheese and caramelized sweet onions
as well as a citrus rosemary breast of chicken on toasted brioche roll
with smoked Vermont cheddar, oven dried tomatoes and a sweet basil
pesto. Panko fried tilapia filet on toasted brioche with tartar sauce,
marinated Japanese cucumbers, butter lettuce and heirloom tomatoes
will prove satisfying.
Looking forward to seeing you at the club.

Food and
Beverage
by Dennis Verrette
I am pleased to announce
that we are off to a great
start in the food and
beverage department and are very excited about
the remainder of 2012. We have many exciting events that you won’t want to miss such as
Friday Oyster Bar, Trivia Night, Bingo, Crayfish
boil, Scotch Tastings, Martini Bar, Spanish Tapas,
Fondue Night, and movie Night, just to mention a few. Our Wine Program, created by Kellie
Davenport and our team, has been very well
received. We are planning several wine maker
dinners, wine education opportunities, Friday
Night Flights, Special Reserve wine by the glass,
Wine Wednesdays, and an upcoming couples
trip to Napa Valley! There is something for
everyone who enjoys wine.
You may be asking, “how do I find out what is
going on and when?” Very good question! We
provide event information to you in many forms.
You will see table tents, flyers posted all over the
club, articles in the club Putt Pourri, RHCC web
site, e-mail reminders, RHCC Facebook, and our
weekly e-mailer, This Week At RHCC. So if you
are looking, you should be well informed of our
Club activities.
Keep an eye out for our special dinner menu
which will now offer many new entrée options
for under $20, along with our regular dinner
menu.
See you at the Club.
