January · February · March 2008 Global•Education•Technology Center Renamed Richardson Hall Campus Update An Extraordinary Ordinary Man Kevin O’Brien Public Relations Trustees rename Global•Education•Technology Center Richardson Hall If you’ve been on our campus for more than a day, you’ve probably seen him. Really, you can’t miss him. His lean, tall stature and full head of white hair make Lee Richardson stand out amidst the crowd. You might see him walking up from the river headed for the office. You might see him sitting alone in a corner of the dining hall quietly observing or interacting with students and staff. You might see him scraping plates after a banquet meal, or washing dishes, or playing the piano and singing with Senior Saints after dinner. For certain, if you walk down the faculty office hallway between 8:00 and 2:00, you will see him at his desk analyzing investment spread sheets on the computer. Mr. Richardson earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Midwest Christian College in Oklahoma City and a Bachelor of Divinity from Phillips Seminary in Enid, Oklahoma. Between graduation from Midwest and enrollment in Phillips Seminary, Lee taught high school math. In 1954, he married Lovella Stoll whom he met at Midwest Christian. On January 29, 2008, they celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary. The Richardsons moved to Enid, Oklahoma, to attend graduate school. Lovella put Lee through school working as a civilian secretary in the Air Force for the Office of Special Investigation. Lee and Lovella have three grown sons and a two-year-old granddaughter. Homecoming 2008 Some thought him too young to be a professor; he was twentyfive. Fifty-two years later, no one has served the College longer or in so many capacities. Lee is an honorable, unassuming, unpretentious, multi-talented man skilled at learning, science, business management, investing, and music. He is an individual and unconcerned with fashion as evidenced by his powder blue tuxedo jacket which students have enjoyed over decades. A man of few words, Lee possesses a rare ability to reframe Lee’s degrees made landing his first teaching position somewhat profound concepts into language that everyone can understand. challenging. Weedman turned and said, “There are some remarkable people in the world and a few are brilliant. Lee Richardson is brilliant.” permanent funds, the investment growth from Lee’s investment skill is substantial. Teaching Greek remains Lee’s favorite job. Those privileged to take his Greek courses know the valuable contribution he made to their ministry and to the Johnson faculty. Lee said recently, “I am proud when hearing a student say I’ve had a positive influence on him. I want to be known for my teaching and preaching and for providing facilities for students. I want to be an influence that will spread from here to wherever the students go.” When requested, Lee changed roles for the good of the institution on numerous occasions, at times, with great personal disappointment. When the College needed a science and biology teacher, he took courses at UT and began teaching science and biology. When asked to be business manager, he learned to keep books via Under Lee’s stewardship, the income from correspondence, which he never completed, permanent scholarship funds has grown yet produced a set of books the auditor to provide over $900,000 annually in praised as one of the finest set of books he scholarships. I enjoy my work here. I don’t know what I would do if I retired. But I really need to retire before I flub up. I don’t want to be remembered for flubbing up.” Lee and Lovella purchased land on a ridge Lee’s investment skill is substantial. Lee enjoyed the girls’ squealing in disgust and replied, “If you can’t handle this stuff, you’re not ready for the ministry.” David and Cindy Reece recall having Lee for Greek and biology in the late 60’s. They appreciated his genius which they thought to be his only temperament. Since joining the faculty, they have enjoyed numerous riotous evenings talking about getting old. David says, “Lee is a raconteur of the first order.” One of Lee’s greatest and most enduring contributions to Johnson has been behind the scenes. Since 1970, he has served as investment manager. Under his stewardship, permanent scholarship funds have grown, and the income provides over $900,000 in scholarships annually. While generous gifts from donors provide the initial principal for these Anywhere? To say that Rachel Oblon (’05) is adventurous is an understatement. She walks courageously where angels fear to tread. To say that Rachel Oblon will follow God anywhere was untested. That is, until recently. She wondered, “Do I truly want God’s will or do I just say I do? What if His will makes me uncomfortable or costs me everything? Would I still want it?” She answered yes. And yet, believing that she must know for certain, Rachel resigned her envious role at a dynamic mega-church and journeyed to Uganda, Africa. taught thousands of children who always wanted to hear more. She told God’s story, and dozens believed and obeyed. With her success and acceptance, some may wonder why Rachel returned to America. She knew staying in Uganda was an option for her. She was “ready to move to Uganda or Costa Rica or Hungary, anywhere the simplicity of the Gospel was priority and the problems people suffered from were more a result of circumstance or location than self-infliction.” Miss Oblon relates her journey to the mission of Philip in Acts Rachel believes that God used the Uganda experiences to confirm 8. To be in her presence is to rejoice in God’s grace toward us and toward all others. Her faith and hope are contagious. She desires to see the will of God fulfilled on earth as it is in heaven. And God blesses and uses her inspiringly. Miss Oblon returned stateside just before Christmas convinced that the trip was “absolutely everything it needed to be and more.” She is not content with the status quo; she wants more. Humbled that God takes the energy to teach her and show her new things, she wants to go deeper, experience more, and be challenged by what she sees and experiences. Today, Rachel is in San Diego, California, volunteering with youth and singles ministries in a local church while considering ministry options and deciding how and where to best fulfill her calling. Potpourri Richard Woods JBC Trustee A Communion Prayer † Our Father in heaven, We come to you just now as one in heart and mind, created in your image, deformed by our sin, restored by your Son, and knowing that through it all, you have desired to commune with us. We offer ourselves as eager communicants, remembering that Jesus, who died to mend our relationship with you, said to his disciples—and to us through them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you.” We come to you, Father, as a people who want to serve you, knowing that you hold the whole world in your hands, and that there’s no safer place than under your will. With the help of your Spirit, we offer you our bodies as living sacrifices, remembering that Jesus, who set aside the privileges of deity to become a man, said to his disciples—and to us through them, “This is my body given for you.” We come to you, Father, as undeserving sinners, knowing that we have all made our own mistakes in our own ways, but that the solution is always the same—your forgiveness. We offer you our repentance, and our gratitude that we are no longer under the law, but under your grace. We remember that Jesus is our mediator in the covenant of grace, and that he said to his disciples—and to us through them: “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.” And we come to you, Father, knowing that we have a tendency to forget, to be caught up in the world itself, and to take you, the creator and sustainer of the world, for granted. We offer you this moment, as we reflect upon your goodness and power and mercy and grace, and on the suffering and crucifixion and resurrection of your Son, remembering that he himself, on the night he was betrayed, took bread and wine and said to his disciples—and to us through them, “Do this in remembrance of me.” As we share these symbols of the bread and wine that Jesus shared with his disciples, we offer you our prayers in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. Richard E. Woods Ph.D., Trustee Dr. Woods earned a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Tennessee where he served as an assistant professor of electrical engineering and computer science. He has also consulted with NASA, Oak Ridge National Laboratories, and other government agencies, and co-founded Perceptics Corporation, a high-tech image processing and computer vision company that was later acquired by Westinghouse Corporation. He has co-authored two books, including the world’s leading college textbook in the field of digital image processing. Rick and his wife Janice are honorary alumni of Johnson Bible College. They are longtime members of Knoxville’s Woodlawn Christian Church, where he currently serves as elder. They have two sons, David and Jonathan. † The quotations are from Luke 22:14 – 20, NIV. Terriel Byrd Addresses All-Campus Chapel Dr. Terriel Byrd addressed the Johnson community during a two-day emphasis on black history month. As soccer coach, Underwood led the Johnson Bible College men’s soccer team to its first ever NCCAA Regional Championship and a seventh place finish in the 2007 national Ken Underwood Church Relations competition. Coach Underwood played competitively during high school and college. Since graduating from King College, he has served the Competitive Youth for Tennessee Soccer Association as a local club president, tournament director, director of coaching, and for the last nine years as vice president. Ken has coached youth players for over ten years, holds a “C” coaching license from the United States Soccer Federation, and is a USSF referee. Underwood loves soccer. Underwood also loves the church. He began as a deacon and then served as elder with Central Christian Church in Bristol, Tennessee, for nearly twenty years. Additionally, he served as Sunday school teacher for youth and adults, Sunday school superintendent, youth sponsor, mission committee member and chair, and was on youth committees and search committees. Today, Ken serves as elder with the Christian Church of Loudon County in Lenoir City, Tennessee. Similarly, Underwood loves JBC. Nearly two years prior to joining the JBC development staff, Ken expressed his desire to one day serve on the JBC staff. Before this career change, Ken was in sales, sales management, general management, small business owner, manufacturing, printing, advertising, and consulting/training. Underwood’s church and career experiences make him uniquely qualified to represent the College to churches. Ken is married to Libby (Lilley) Underwood from Bristol, Tennessee. Ken and Libby have two daughters and one granddaughter. To arrange for a visit to your church, contact Ken by phone (865) 251-2141 or electronically at [email protected]. Thomas R. Cash Awarded Eubanks Fellowship Recently, Dr. Richard Beam, Vice President for Academics, announced to the faculty that Thomas R. Cash would arrive on campus March 24 as the second Eubanks Fellow. In February of 2008, Tom began his seventh year as senior minister with Liberty Christian Church in Martinsville, Indiana. Before going to Liberty, Tom served in single staff ministries in Kentucky, Illinois, Alaska, and Indiana. His work in Alaska was mission oriented. The members of Liberty Christian Church have dealt with a number of challenges in the last six years. As they faced each difficulty, Tom sensed an increasing ability to stay in the trenches. According to him, “throwing in the towel was a luxury; I could always start over somewhere else. The congregation could not.” Bob Russell, retired minister of Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, Kentucky, and Shawn McMullen, editor of Lookout, both commended Tom for not walking away. Bob said, “Can you imagine if this had happened to a younger man? He not only would have left the church, he would have left the ministry.” The elders at Liberty understand the toll the last few years have taken. In 2007, they awarded Tom a four-week sabbatical to acknowledge the thirtieth anniversary of his ordination and his fifth year of service with them. Some elders considered rest the priority for Tom’s entire sabbatical. Tom had personal growth and sharing in mind and presented a proposal for the Eubanks Fellowship. Tom’s experience and insight could encourage young, fledgling preachers and youth ministers. He views the Eubanks Fellowship as a time to share with the students, relax, unwind, and catch his breath in the beauty of East Tennessee. Tom’s wife Coleeta works as a school secretary. She will be with him on campus during the first week of his five-week fellowship. Tom came to Johnson as a student in the fall of 1974, where he met Coleeta. They married in 1976, and at the end of his junior year moved to a located ministry in Kentucky. After raising two children, he returned to his collegiate studies and graduated with the JBC class of 2000. He is a past vice president of the Alumni Association and currently serves on the Council of Seventy, chairing the Student Relations Committee. Join us in praying that Tom will experience a respite and revival that will overflow onto the Johnson community, his family, and the Martinsville congregation. That’s exactly what happened–not once, but twice. Allen Buzard, honorary alumnus ’73, ministers to convicts in four Indiana prisons and one jail. Mr. Buzard, now eighty-nine years old, wrote, “I speak of Johnson frequently wherever I speak. I never ask for money. ...I was stunned and thrilled when receiving checks from the Trust Fund of Wabash Valley Correctional Facility. It’s an offering for Johnson from the inmates at South Prison.” 8:3 ff, “I testify that JOHNSO 89/100****** Forty-Seven and they gave as much as they were able, and DONATIONS OFFENDER’S even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the saints. And they did not do as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us in keeping with His will.” About 100 prisoners attend church services led by Mr. Buzard, most of them active Christians. Many were baptized by Mr. Buzard. Perhaps these gifts are similar to the Macedonian gifts in 2 Corinthians We are inspired by Mr. Buzard’s long and faithful ministry and witness to prisoners, and we are grateful for his loyal testimony on our behalf. GE N BIBLE COLLE Class of 1958 Inducted into the Golden Anniversary Club April 22-24, 2008 The Class of 1958 is cordially invited to return to campus, along with all classes graduating before them for a very special 3-day reunion. There are stories that need telling and your version is correct. To share in this celebration, you must place a reservation. On Wednesday afternoon just before supper, alumni, students, and friends assembled in the colorful dining room for a brief dedication service. Paul Coleman, alumnus and trustee of the Donald M. and Mary H. Gally Charitable Trust, shared personal reflections on Mr. and Mrs. Gally. President Weedman led in a Litany of Dedication. (Pictured left to right: Gary Weedman, Paul Coleman, David Eubanks, & Don Shell). 10 Blue & White The pond, once a water source for Ashley Johnson’s Holstein cows, is transformed into a beautifully landscaped water feature providing a picturesque view from the dining room. Students and staff are enjoying Gally Commons immensely. Natural light floods the dining area through large arched windows which run the entire length of the dining area. “I really like the atmosphere,” says Monica Swartzentruber, sophomore – Lexington, Kentucky. More than a place to eat, many find themselves lingering longer to enjoy the company of friends. It has become so popular that students requested expanded hours in order to meet, study, and visit in the casual surroundings. Recognizing that construction costs are not placed on the backs of students through increased room and board, senior student Jon Bell from Franklin, Tennessee, says, “I’m very grateful to those who are giving to make Gally Commons possible.” $5,000,000 Gally Commons is one of the three elements of the Above Every Other Desire capital campaign. While the Donald M. and Mary H. Gally Charitable Trust is providing significant funding for this building, the campaign is targeting $2 million of the $5 million goal for this new building. $2,670,000 $1,500,000 Campaign Update Blue & White 11 Homecoming 2008 Another great year of catching up with old friends A C B D A. Eugene Boring, the man, is really quite remarkable, and we would all be blessed to know him. While attending church camp on the Johnson Bible College campus at age sixteen, Gene met Karen Chapman, who was thirteen. They became high school sweethearts and married in 1956. Gene and Karen raised three children and are blessed with two granddaughters and two grandsons. Eugene enrolled in JBC in 1956, earning a B.A. in Religion. That was only the beginning of a life-long pursuit of learning. He then earned a B.D., M.A. in New Testament Semitics, and the Ph.D. in New Testament Theology and conducted post-doctoral research from 1973 through 2002. A student pastor, pastor, associate professor, and professor, today Dr. Boring is the I. Wylie & Elizabeth Briscoe professor of New Testament at Texas Christian University (Emeritus since 2003). Dr. Boring’s awards and scholarships are too numerous to mention. He travelled the world conducting research and twice received audience with Pope John Paul II (1991 and 1996). Administrator, Professor, Programmer John “Jack” Maxwell Lowe is a second generation graduate of JBC and holds four degrees: Associate in Technology, Bachelor of Arts Ministerial, Bachelor of Science in Education, and Master of Arts in Psychology. Jack married Becky Osborn and they raised Carrie Beth and Andy. Becky lost her battle with cancer in 2003. Mr. Lowe joined the JBC faculty in 1966 and has faithfully served as administrator, professor, and programmer. Jack served on over twenty evaluation teams for the Association of Biblical Higher Education (ABHE) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and maintained involvement in the ABHE Commission on Testing and the ABHE Computer Commission. He served as dean of students for thirty years. Mr. Lowe is an elder, Sunday school teacher, and supply preacher at Gap Creek Christian Church, is highly invested in missions, and is currently serving as board member with a mission in Colombia, South America. Jack retired from JBC in 2006 and now serves the College as a volunteer institutional researcher and computer programmer. Vic and Peggy Whited In August, Victor R. Whited and Peggy Jo (Rice) Whited celebrated fifty-six years of marriage and fifty-six years of serving churches together. Vic was called to the preaching ministry in church camp in 1950, received a scholarship to Johnson Bible College, and with the help of Orville Hodge, his former minister, preached his first sermon in 1951. Peggy Jo planned to attend university but changed her mind when the JBC Tour Choir presented a concert at her home church. Vic and Peggy met her first day on campus and were married one year later. The Whiteds have three adult children and four grandsons. They have served together in twelve churches, both while attending college and following graduation. In 2002, they began serving with the Washington Avenue Christian Church in Savannah, Georgia, and continue serving to this day. Throughout their ministry, every church to which they moved was smaller than the one they left, every church supported their dear friends Clint and Phyllis Thomas, and every church supported Johnson Bible College.
