Your local association sent eleven delegates to attend various workshops offered in conjunction with the annual meeting. Delegates were elected at the GHUSBC Membership Meeting held at the Hobby Hilton in October 2009. Delegates attending were Donna Hall, Cheryl Polak, Kendra Hardy, Penny Shannon, Dot Breland, Doris Chesser, Georgette McNally, Kelly Patterson, Sandy Little, Tom Little, and Bill Fisher. Delegates arrived on Wednesday after a long, long day of traveling. Our flight in Houston was ninety minutes late due to a maintenance issue. We are thankful the airlines put safety first. We landed in Reno in the midst of snow flurries and very chilly weather. In fact, it was downright cold. USBC provided an area where we could watch the Queens live broadcast, but due to our late arrival we were in line with about 2/3 of the delegation to register. Again, another ninety minutes passed and the telecast was over by the time our turn to register came. The Annual Meeting began at 2:00 PM on Friday at the Reno Ballroom. The meeting began with the Memorial Program followed by the Bowlers to Veterans Link (BVL) presentation. Bowlers across the nation donated $100,000 more than the previous year; this year’s total was $826,000. President Jeff Boje and Executive Director Stu Upson gave reports on the past year at USBC. Jeff Boje stated his term was up July 31, 2010 and introduced the new President, Darlene Baker, whose term begins on August 1, 2010. Ms. Baker has held the office of Vice President for two years. When the meeting adjourned at 3:50 PM, we headed to the Town Hall meeting with Q&A until 5:30 PM. We found this meeting extremely beneficial as delegates asked many pertinent questions about the Legislation presented. There were seven proposed changes to league rules, seven proposed changes to tournament rules and ten by-law changes being presented. USBC CHARITIES USBC recognizes the Bowlers to Veterans Link (BVL) and the Susan G Komen Bowl for the Cure charitable organizations. These are probably familiar names to you as 50/50 pots are run at your local tournaments and collections are made through-out the centers in November and February. Bowlers have contributed almost $2 million dollars to these charities in the past year. At the annual meeting we enjoyed a performance by the group called RE-CREATION which travels to VA Hospitals all over the U.S. entertaining the patients. If you ever have the opportunity to see their performance, please do. It will certainly strengthen your patriotism. At one point they came through the audience and shook the hand of every veteran in attendance. Please remember to be generous the next time you are approached for these charities. News to Spare Page 2 October 2010 A TRIBUTE TO A BOWLING ALLEY BABY By Kendra Garcia The idea for this article came to me one day as I was sitting with some of my fellow bowling alley babies. We had been comparing stories about our bowling alley experiences, and it occurred to me that most of these stories would only happen to a certain type of person. Thus, the term “bowling alley baby” was coined. We’re everywhere. We’re at every center, tournament, pro shop and we usually travel together having known each other since we were kids. We don’t see bowling as a game, hobby, family activity or sport: it’s all of the above and much more. Bowling is a part of who we are, to the point that it’s probably in our genetics, and yes our children will be the same way. So this is for you bowling alley babies, who for years, some since before I could throw a ball, have been my friends, colleagues, competitors, crushes, but most importantly my family. You know you’re a “bowling alley baby” when…… You can sleep in a bowling alley and the sound of crashing pins is simply a lullaby. Your mom probably bowled when she was pregnant with you. You probably will, currently are, or have in the past worked at the bowling alley, and/or, you have one or more family members employed there. You know the sound of an underground or a ball hitting the rack without looking up. You’re not afraid to walk around the center barefoot. Your family consists of numerous moms, dads, brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles that are in no way biologically related to you. Most of your childhood birthday parties were bowling parties. The shelves of your room growing up were covered in bowling trophies….and they may still be there. While other kids usually had sleepovers with their friends on Friday nights growing up, you were at the bowling alley with other bowling alley babies while your parents bowled league. You’re first crush was most likely someone you bowled with in youth league. We never refer to it as the bowling alley or bowling center it’s simply “The Bowl.” You have never been able to walk into “The Bowl” without hugging at least five people who have known you since you were born. Normal everyday words such as carry, sit, turkey, oil, split, pocket, frame and flooded have double meanings to you. Growing up, your summer trip was to a bowling tournament. USBC HONORS TEXANS USBC WORKSHOPS Jamie Brooks of Wylie, Texas was the choice of USBC as Proprietor of the Year. Brooks is a Hall of Fame member of the Senior All Star Bowling Association (SASBA) Texas State USBC (TSUSBC), Bowling Proprietors Association of America and the Houston Bowling Hall of Fame. Jamie was also chosen as Proprietor of the Year in 2009 by the Texas State USBC. Brooks currently owns many bowling centers including Plano Bowl in Plano, Texas which just finished hosting the doubles and singles portion of the TSUSBC Open Tournament There were various workshops offered and attended by GHUSBC delegates which made for a very full schedule on Wednesday, April 28th, starting at 8:00 AM. Delegates also attended workshops on Thursday morning, April 29th. John Handegard of Spring, Texas received the nod in the Veteran Category of the USBC Hall of Fame. Handegard won 14 PBA Senior titles, three PBA Senior Player of the Year honors and three selections to Bowling Magazine’s Senior All-American Team. # 1 Coaching and the International Training and Research Center (ITRC) # 2 Rules # 3 Growing the Membership/Best Practices # 4 Introduction to USBC Regional Managers # 5 Diversity # 6 The Future of USBC Technology # 7 Proprietor Programs That Work # 8 Associations Business /Taxes # 9 Bowl.com #10 Meet the Candidates News to Spare Page 3 October 2010 Our Memory Book We might not always have a lifetime with those we love, but we will always have our memories REMEMBERING AN AMERICAN HERO, CPL. JEFFREY W. JOHNSON TOMBALL - A jet carrying Corporal Jeffrey Johnson was met at Hooks Airport by a sea of patriotism and a group of hundreds strong to pay their final respects to a local American Hero. Johnson, 21 was part of a long line of military men. His grandfathers served in the Navy and Air Force. Four of his uncles were in the National Guard. Hundreds of people from across the region lined the streets, standing outside their cars, saluting their hero and waving American flags—-from Hooks Airport to the funeral home in Tomball. Johnson joined the marines after graduating from Waller High School in 2007. On May 11. 2010, an IED exploded taking the lives of Johnson and Kilgore, TX marine Kenneth B. May, 26 while on unmounted patrol in Helmand Province, Afghanistan Both marines were anti-tank assault guided missile men assigned to 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines. Our love and prayers go out to the parents and families of both Marines along with all of our military heroes that are fighting to keep our country safe for us to live the lives we do. Cpl. Johnson comes from a family of bowlers. (See Memorial on Pg. 11) It is not the minister, who has given us freedom of religion. It is not the reporter who has given us freedom of the press. It is not the statesman who has given us freedom of speech. It is not the teacher who has given us freedom to assemble. It is not the attorney, who has given us the right to a fair trial. It is not the politician, who has given us the right to vote. IT IS OUR MILITARY . Probably happens more than you think. Romance and bowling were definitely in the air two years ago when Ron Baird and Kim Donahue were married on June 22, 2008. Ron and Kim had known each other for a few years and they both bowled at the same center. They were both on the Greater Houston USBC certification committee and they became GHUSBC Association Representatives, although at different times. Normally, this would have been the end of the story but this is an unusual sequence of events. Ron’s son Calvin Baird was already devoted to Erika. And when they heard of Ron and Kim’s plans to be married, they decided it would be great to have a father/son wedding. So the four of them put their heads together and thought it would be a great idea to be married at a bowling center. Theirs was not a double wedding but two separate weddings happening simultaneously The grooms were not dressed alike nor were the brides. Ron was dressed in a navy blue jacket with grey pants. Calvin was dressed in white jeans, A special salute to GHUSBC Association Representatives Robert “Marty” Martin Association Representative-at-Large 3 years of service volunteering—not only on the lanes but in the bowling office each week Our newest Association Representative Michael McCray—Ten Pin Lanes Volunteering at Ten Pin and the bowling office S-A-L-U-T-E October 2010 Doris Chesser white western shirt and white western hat. The brides were dressed in white bridal dresses but Erika wore a veil...Kim wore flowers. The minister, a nephew of Ron’s wore bowling shoes. Erika’s bridesmaids wore black and white….Kim’s bridesmaids wore pink. Guests were treated to two wedding cakes, one decorated in a cow print and was made by Erika yet Kim’s cake was covered in butterflies. So you see, bowling and romance do go together; some of the time. They were lovely weddings and the wedding couples were brought together by the sport we all enjoy. Yours truly, also met her husband through bowling, although my story is more ordinary. I met Jim Chesser when I went to a pro shop to buy a new bowling ball. Months later we left all our friends and family behind, drove to El Paso where Jim bowled in the state tournament. After bowling, we continued west to Las Vegas and were married there. Sandy and Tom Little met while bowling and we will have their story in the next issue. But how about you? Did you meet your husband or wife through bowling? They kicked the season off with a big bang, developing training to aide foundations with city wide events, to the planning of a new breed of tournament play, as well as conducting a Boot Camp that guided Houston's youth bowlers to success on sport patterns. For one such youth, Miss Courtney Phillips, the Inaugural Boot Camp female Survivor, this clinic allowed her to improve overall physical and mental game while bowling on sport patterns. It also helped increase her accuracy in picking up spares. Some of this seasons goals for the Youth Leaders are to get off to a running start and maintain a large involvement in the community. For now its clearly safe to say that the youth leaders are knocking down their goals one shot at a time! Dominick Savage, President They started up the new season looking for new youth leaders from the far corners of Houston to our booming downtown. Especially those in the American Wheelchair Bowling Association (AWBA) Tournament in their fun Up & Down event. This event is a 9pin no-tap comprised of two standing bowlers and one wheelchair bowler as a team. This was the very first event of the 49th National Championship Tournament. The tournament began on June 20 and ended on June 26th and was hosted by Copperfield Bowl. This bowling center is an ideal place for this tournament as the floor is level throughout the building.. Many of the participants were Vietnam veterans and the opening ceremony was very moving to all in attendance. A large American flag (6ftx15ft) was held out on the lanes by a local boy scout troop. The flag was illuminated by the lights of two motorcycles that had come together from each end of the bowling center while our National Anthem was being played. Included in the ceremony was Lee Greenwood’s recording of “I’m Proud to be an American”. The Greater Houston USBC took part in the opening ceremonies and were also there throughout the tournament to handle USBC rule clarification as well as volunteering for anything that was needed. It was a very rewarding experience for all of those who volunteered. Bowlers competing in this tournament came from all over the United States; from California to Massachusetts and Texas to Minnesota. This year’s tournament director was Gary Ryan (TX) (photo). This “tournament” also incorporates the AWBA Board of Directors Meeting, Hall of Fame Meeting and Banquet, General Membership Meeting, Auxiliary Membership Meeting and ends with the National Awards Banquet. Page 11 October 2010 First Place finishers for the Up and Down were AWBA’s J. K. Johnston (TX) , Sandy Borak and Kim Baird. Johnston is a multi national champion including being 2001 and 2008 “All Events” Champion and carries a 170 average. A few of the bowlers had “service dogs”. Some of these dogs had their own strollers and conducted themselves like well trained dogs are supposed to do. They were very quiet in the center. When they were out of their strollers they sat or slept quietly on their owners laps. Terry Rock (OH) had his Chihuahua “Bob” on his lap whenever he was not bowling and “Bob” even wore glasses for some Rock and “Bob” photo opportunities. Peggy and Stephen Smith also had a Chihuahua and “Cheeko”, besides being a beloved pet, helps stabilize Stephen’s blood pressure. The 2011 AWBA National Championship is scheduled to be in Brockton, MA MEMORIAL PLANNED FOR FALLEN MARINE IN TOMBALL Tomball’s latest in its series of statues depicting noted and historical figures will not be a century-old founding father or a figure depicting the town’s rural heritage. Its next monument will reflect one of Tomball’s proudest moments, but more importantly, reflect it’s greatest losses. While this memorial will be for all of the “fallen” military. It will be a six foot statue in the likeness of Cpl. Jeffrey Johnson in his Marine Corps “dress blues” saluting an American flag being flow at half staff. This memorial will not be funded by city funds, however, but will come from the private sector. Contributions can be made at any Chase Bank in the name of Cpl. Jeffrey Johnson or the “Memorial for the Fallen”. Greater Houston USBC provides a newsletter which is printed at least twice each year. It is our goal to provide you with more upto-date information about the Houston bowling community quarterly rather than twice a year. In order to do this, we are asking that you help us by e-mailing noteworthy accomplishments at your bowling center. This can include unusual spare pick-ups, such as the l-7-10, the 5-7-10, 7-8-9, etc. Things such as a triplicate 112 when the bowler’s average is 112, human interest stories, jokes, bowling cartoons, or anything you feel is worth mentioning. We won’t promise we will print everything you send but if we feel it is of interest to our readers and with space in mind, we will make every attempt to print it. Successes within these groups give one a sense of accomplishment. The bowling community provides many forums for people to participate and accomplish athletic as well as other rewarding goals including ways to give back to the community through “networking” with charitable organizations. O pportunities abound for all ages and abilities to compete athletically. Unless you bowl like I do, bowling is a non-contact sport and therefore, many of our elderly citizens compete well into their later years. Although bowling is probably not on the exercise list of many health organizations, it can certainly help as an outside activity to keep one active as well as a way to work on one’s agility. W inning can take on many faces other than who had the highest score. Many people with physical disabilities are able to bowl. I am proud that the bowling community caters to these bowlers by providing ramps and other enhancements to assist them. The American Wheelchair Bowling Association is a wonderful organization that helps provide a winning spirit for those who participate. And I am proud to report that our local Bowling Association is very involved with Special Olympics. L ittle acts of kindness many times, are all it takes to make big differences to peoples lives. These acts can be demonstrated by the many events that bowlers and bowling establishments hold to raise money for charitable organizations. One such event, the Annual Luci Bonneau Tournament to raise money for breast cancer research was just concluded and again was a great success. I ntelligence, contrary to popular belief, is essential to becoming an accomplished bowler. I’m not talking rocket science here but learning and understanding lane conditions as well as ball reactions under these various conditions is a key to becoming a good bowler. N ational pride is on display in the bowling community through our support of our military and veteran organizations. At all tournaments, if the National Anthem is not played, we say the Pledge of Allegiance and locally we say the Texas Pledge. Bowlers are proud of our country. G od, family, military, apple pie and bowling….it doesn’t get any more American than that. Many of my friends are friends that I have met through bowling. Most bowlers I have met are “salt of the earth” people that I admire and I am proud that I am a member of their “bowling family”.
