The ELC is located in one of UVic’s newest buildings, near the bus
terminal, cafeteria, gym, cafes, library and computer labs. You will
attend classes throughout the UVic campus and have access to all
of UVic’s academic, recreational and social services and facilities,
allowing you to become part of an exciting student community.

ELC Programs include:
• An average of 15 students per class; maximum of 18
• 20-30 hours of classes per week with qualified ESL teachers
• Social and cultural activities with friendly Cultural Assistants

How to Apply for Admission
to UVic
Conditional and Preliminary Admission are given to students who
meet UVic’s academic requirements but have not yet met UVic’s
English proficiency requirement.A (see notes under “How to Apply for

The University of Victoria offers Conditional Admission for
undergraduate degree programs in:
• the Faculties of Engineering, Humanities, Social Sciences and Science
• History in Art in the Faculty of Fine Arts
A passing score for either program listed below satisfies UVic’s
English requirement for admission to undergraduate degree
programs at UVic (equivalent to IELTS or TOEFL).
1.University Admission Preparation Program (UAP)
•Highest academic level of the 12-Week Intensive program
•Start dates: January, April and September
•Schedule:18 core class hours plus 8 Study Centre hours per week
•Strengthens skills in oral presentations, note taking, reading academic texts, academic writing and research
2.University Admission: Advanced English and Canadian Studies Program
•Intensive 4-week program combining two courses:
Advanced English: Develops skills in essay writing, note taking, oral presentations, seminar participation and research
Canadian Studies: Introduces aspects of Canadian culture such as literature, fine arts, mass media and communications
•Schedule: 20 class hours per week plus academic
workshops
Entrance Requirements for both 1 and 2 above:
•ONE of the following:
• iBT TOEFL 79 with no section less than 17
• IELTS 6 with a minimum score of 5.5 in each skill area
• Passing Grade of 80% in the 570A level of the ELC’s
12-week program
All students will be required to complete an entrance exam, written
test and interview.

2. Submit two official transcriptsB for all secondary and any
post-secondary education completed, with English translations.
3. Meet current UVic admission requirements (i.e. Grade Point Average cutoff) and any specific faculty requirements.
4.If you are already registered in the English Language Centre’s
UAP class level you will be considered for Conditional
Admission; students in 410, 490 or 570 class levels will be
considered for Preliminary Admission. In either case, you do
not have to submit a TOEFL or IELTS score.
5 a)
Conditional Admission*: If you have a 79 iBT TOEFL score or an IELTS score of 6 you will be offered Conditional Admission. If you meet the section requirementsC for these scores you will be placed directly into the highest academic level of the ELC’s 12-Week program: University Admission Preparation (UAP)—see option #1 at left.
* Conditional Admission allows you to register for undergraduate
programs and courses but you cannot begin these programs
until you have met UVic’s language requirement.
b) P
reliminary Admission**: If you have a minimum
71 iBT TOEFL score or an IELTS score of 5.5 you will be
offered Preliminary Admission. You will be tested upon
arrival and placed into a class level in the ELC’s 12-Week
program according to your proficiency.
**Preliminary Admission does not yet allow you to register for
undergraduate programs and courses. It gives you one year to
satisfy UVic´s language requirement.

A E nglish Proficiency requirements for full admission to the
University of Victoria: TOEFL iBT 90 with no less than 20 in any
section / IELTS 6.5 with no skill area less than 6.0 / UAP passing
grade of 80% or higher
BPlease note that documents coming from other institutions
must be sent directly to our office by the issuing institution to be
considered “official.”
C TOEFL iBT 79 with no section less than 17; IELTS 6 with a
