attend ELPI each year. It’s a program full of
options and opportunities that you can
tailor to your interests and needs. In ELPI,
you can take general classes for developing
communication, or academic classes that focus
on speaking, listening, reading and writing.
Program Features
• 6 class levels (High Beginner to University
Admission Preparation)

Your 12-Week Program Options
Upper Beginner and Low-Intermediate
levels build fundamental communication skills
by focussing on comprehension and speaking
confidence.
Intermediate and Advanced levels (410 and above) offer students 2 class options:
• Academic English: for students who would like to complete a degree at an Englishspeaking university.
• General English: for students who would
like to explore career, business and personal
interests.
University Admission Preparation (UAP)
UAP is the highest academic level in our
12-week program. This option is perfect
for students wishing to meet the English
language requirement for UVic.
Your UAP classes will focus on:
• academic English;
• oral presentations;
•note-taking;
• reading academic texts;
• report writing;
• research and computer use.

Requirements
Academic: Students who intend to apply to a UVic
degree program must meet UVic’s academic admission
requirements.
Language: 6.0 IELTS with no section less than 5.5 or 79 iBT
with no section less than 17.
Successful completion of this program fulfills the English
language requirement for entrance to UVic undergraduate
degree programs. Students must:
•receive a passing grade (80%) for Advanced English;
•receive a minimum 60% in Canadian Studies; students may
take this course for 1.5 credit units for an additional fee.

• Enrollment in the ELC 12-week program at
410 level

Boost workshops to improve your Business English skills and
understanding of Canadian business culture.
In Business Boost you will receive:
• 20 hours of Business English classes (July four-week option);
• 14 hours of Business English classes (August three- and
four-week options);
• a guided tour of a local business to see some of the
business concepts you’ve studied in action within the
Canadian context;

Program Application
You must:

• Meet Canadian visa requirements while they are in Canada
• Buy medical insurance for the duration of the program

Canadian Immigration Laws
Once you have completed the application and paid the
application fees, you will receive a Letter of Acceptance
(LOA). You can use this letter to apply for appropriate visas
or permits. It is your responsibility to obtain the correct
visa or permit.
Depending on your nationality and length of study, you
may not require a visa to study in Canada. However,
you might still need to purchase an Electronic Travel
Authorization (eTA) BEFORE arriving in Canada.

12-Week Intensive English Program (ELPI)
• Have a basic knowledge of English and successfully complete
the online test: continuingstudies.uvic.ca/elc/testing.
All English Language Centre students must have medical
insurance and should confirm that it covers any activities
they may participate in (including sports).
If you plan on staying in Victoria for longer than 6 months,
you must apply for British Columbia Medical Services Plan
(MSP) upon arrival. There is a three month waiting period
for MSP, so you should also buy private medical insurance to
cover you for the first 3 months of your stay.
