About Soroptimist Soroptimist Grace Soroptimist Pledge For the Bread upon the Board, make us truly thankful Lord. For each one meeting here, whom our hearts hold close and dear. For this day, O Lord above, now accept our grateful love. Amen. I pledge allegiance to Soroptimism and to the ideals for which it stands. The sincerity of friendship, the joy of achievement, the dignity of service, the integrity of profession, the love of country. I will put forth my greatest effort to promote, uphold and defend these ideals for a larger fellowship in home, in society, in business, for country and for God. About Us Founded in 1921, Soroptimist is an international organization for business and professional women who provide volunteer service to their communities. Almost 100,000 Soroptimists in about 120 countries and territories contribute time and financial support to community-based and international projects benefiting women and girls. Soroptimist International of Greater Bremerton Area was chartered June 1, 1944 as an organization of business and professional women working to improve the lives of women and girls in the Bremerton and Central Kitsap communities. The name, Soroptimist, means “best for women,” and that’s what the organization strives to achieve. Soroptimists are women at their best working to help other women to be their best. What We Do Soroptimists focus on a variety of educational programs and service to their communities. Club projects range from renovating domestic violence shelters and providing camper scholarships and food baskets for needy families, to providing volunteers and purchasing equipment and supplies for community organizations. Local organizations recently supported include Girls Scouts of Western Washington, Kitsap Community Resources— Housing Solutions Program, YWCA ALIVE Shelter & Family Services Programs, The Salvation Army, Kitsap County Domestic Violence Tax Force—RESPECT Kitsap Youth ProCommunity Service Award Recipient, Stand Up For gram, Northwest Coalition Against Trafficking Kids at the recognition dinner held June 18, 2013 and Bremerton Beyond Accessible Play. We also participate in organization-wide programs that include the Women’s Opportunity Award, the Soroptimist Workplace Campaign to End Domestic Violence, the Ruby Award, and the Violet Richardson Award. Funding Funds to support club projects and programs are raised in a variety of ways, including but not limited to direct contributions from the general public, partnering with Kitsap Sun and the Women Today Show, sale of the Kitsap Card, and this event, our annual auction and dinner gala held in the fall of each year. OUR MISSION To improve the lives of women and girls in our local communities and throughout the world. Their efforts help to promote the issues that are important to the Soroptimist organization. Soroptimist is concerned with the special challenges facing today’s girls and young women. The organization launched the Violet Richardson Award program in 2000 as a way to recognize girls for their volunteer service to their communities. Honorees are women who have worked in extraordinary ways to benefit women and girls. Examples of the type of work honored include: spearheading an effort to open a domestic violence shelter, working to secure health services for low-income women, or starting a mentoring program for at-risk girls. The program enables us to thank these women and encourage others to explore ways to assist women and girls. The program honors young women between the ages of 14 and 17 whose volunteer efforts include: helping other disadvantaged girls; fighting drugs, crime and violence; cleaning up the environment; and working to end discrimination and poverty. Soroptimist We wish to thank McCloud’s Grill House, especially Andy Graham and his entire staff, for working so hard to ensure a successful event. Andy, you were an absolute joy to work with. Thank you! The program is named after Violet Richardson Ward, the first president of the first Soroptimist club. 3 “Best for Women & Girls” Soroptimist 16 “Best for Women & Girls” * Special Recognition * Silent Auction Donors ACT Theatre James & Joanie Allen Mourine Anduiza Argosy Cruises Arnold’s Home Furnishings, Steve Ford Marcia Baker Basile Chiropractic & Massage Kitsap County Historical Society, Kathleen Cahall Kristi Croswaite Steve & Pat Degracia Joan Dingfield Kalissa Fagin Jessica Guidry Harmony Hill Retreat Center Cherie Hart Deborah Horn In-Health Imaging Kitsap Bank Kitsap Credit Union Unchalee “Angie” Krunyawath Lewis Funeral Chapel Miche Bags, Roxane Payne Museum of Glass Pacific Science Center Purse-onality Attracts, May Acdal Seattle Art Museum Seattle Reparatory Theatre Seattle Sounders FC Nanette Seevers, Handmade from the Heart Linda Sheely Soroptimist International of Gig Harbor Soroptimist International of Port Orchard Sonja Sutton, Mary Kay Cosmetics Greg & Sharon Weathers Mary West, Stacy McBride Collections Woodland Park Zoo President’s Message We send our heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped to make this event possible and for their encouragement, generosity, and support throughout the year.
