Twin Falls, Idaho Pleasant Grove, Utah Great Falls, Mont. Butte, Mont. South Jordan, Utah West Jordan, Utah Coming off a second-place finish in Scenic West Athletic Conference play, the College of Southern Idaho baseball team will look to a young group of players to challenge for a championship. Only five players return off a team that ended the season 40-17 - three of them pitchers that finished strong. “We’re going to have to figure out how to play together early,” said head coach Boomer Walker. “My expectation is that early we will learn to play as a team and see how it is to play in this league. By the second go-round in conference play, we will need to stop being freshmen and have it figured out.” The burden of teaching the new players will fall on the shoulders of the five returners - Jed Hanson, Jason Oatman, Justin Smith, Jake Draeger and Travis Reynolds. They are joined by sophomore transfer Matt Deacon who is the only other player with experience. “I think the sophomore guys we have back are much better than they were as freshmen,” Walker said. “They made more than a normal progression from freshman to sophomore.” Hansen, who played outfield for CSI last season, will be looked to behind the plate. He is joined by freshmen Cameron Cushing and Victor Spencer at that position. “I think we’re going to be as good catching-wise as last year,” Walker said. While the infield is completely new, Walker thinks they will adjust quickly. They include Andrew Reyes, Garrett Wolff, Reynolds, Andy Fox, Tony Hunt, Matt Deacon and Justin Jensen. “We’re probably more athletic in the infield but there is no experienced leader out there,” Walker said. “Travis is a returner and knows how to lead but doesn’t have experience. We are very talented.” With the loss of All-American Grant Kveder, the outfield will need to find it’s identity. Walker is less worried about that happening in the field than at the plate. “In the outfield, we’re going to be a little bit better than we were last year,” Walker said. The Golden Eagle outfielders include Tyler Chism, Zach Vlietstra, Nate Carlson and Nate Robertson. On the mound, CSI returns three great pitchers. Leading the way is second-team all-region selection Jason Oatman. He is joined by Smith and Draeger. “Our depth on the mound might hurt us,” Walker said. You always try to make sure you have 12 guys you feel comfortable with. To start this year we have only three guys with experience. We will need others to step up.” But Walker was quick to point out that it is all based on progression. “Jason Oatman and Justin Smith ended up being two of our best guys by the end of last year. We just need a couple freshman guys that we maybe don’t have high expectations for early to become successful for us by May.” New pitchers include Taylor Mangum, Tyler Barrett, Sam Armstrong, Zane Gray, Brandon Henn, Tyler Gilder and Tyler Curtis. Hanson as well as Vlietstra could also see some time on the mound. While losing Kveder hurt at the plate, Walker said this year’s group has better overall foot speed and more overall power potential. “We just need to find out who is going to step up and be the player that gets big hits in big games,” Walker said. One thing that will help the Golden Eagles early is the fact that all the SWAC teams except Southern Nevada are young. “Most everybody returns the same amount of guys as we do,” Walker said. “Southern Nevada has experience by a long ways. Early, they are going to be talented and experienced. They signed eight guys to Division I programs early this year. Salt Lake and Western Nevada are going to be competitive as always even though they have a lot of new players.” Walker said CSI, SLCC and WNC should be similar in terms of experience. “It’s going to be who progresses the most later on to see who has a chance to compete with Southern Nevada for top spot to host regionals,” Walker said. “Colorado had one of its most successful seasons last year and with a bunch of returners should have potential to be pretty good. People will have to play well against them to win. CEU is all new but has a couple back off missions.” 2008 Breakdown Letter Winners Lost_________________________________________________________ 20 Returning Starters_ _________________________________________________________ 3 Jed Hanson---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6-0 OF, Hamlake, Minn. Sophomores________________________________________________________________ 6 Matt Deacon, Jake Draeger, Jed Hanson, Jason Oatman, Travis Reynolds and Justin Smith Boomer Walker 4th Season It was only natural that Boomer Walker would someday wear a coach’s cap at Southern Idaho. After assisting the Golden Eagles for nine years Boomer took over as head coach three years ago. In those three years, Boomer has amassed a 110 wins and just 63 losses. The last two seasons, the Golden Eagles have battled for the regular season championship going into the final weekend of play. Boomer was barely walking when his dad, former head coach Skip Walker, started coaching at CSI. And Boomer has always been a part of the program. He was a 12-year-old bat boy when he witnessed the Golden Eagles’ national championship in 1984. Boomer starred for Twin Falls High School, leading the Bruins to a state championship in 1988. Then, he wore the gold and black himself when he played at Southern Idaho from 1989 to 1992, winning all-region honors as a shortstop in 1992. After playing at Northeast Louisiana University, Boomer worked as a student assistant in 1995, gaining valuable coaching experience. In 1996, Boomer returned to Southern Idaho to re-unite with his father. The two still work together but Boomer is the head coach and Skip continues as a hitting instructor. Boomer said it doesn’t feel much different to be in the head coach’s shoes instead of assisting. “I’ve been around here forever so it doesn’t feel any different,” Walker said. “I still feel pressure to keep this program on top, but not any more pressure than before. I’m not naive to think I can accomplish what my dad did.” As far as changes in the program, Boomer said they are very subtle. “My overall philosophy of CSI Baseball is the same. People who have been around the program for a long time won’t see a whole lot of changes,” he said. “I would say the only difference is that my approach is not as old school.” When Boomer isn’t coaching from the dugout, he enjoys waterskiing and playing softball. Boomer and his wife Maria are busy with their son. No one was surprised he has a baseball moniker - Tai Ripken Walker. Dave Carter 4th Season David Carter returned to the College of Southern Idaho in 2004 for his third stint with the Golden Eagles. Dave first came to CSI to play baseball in 1986, leading the Golden Eagles to a fourth-place finish at nationals. He finished his freshman season with a 6-2 record. As a sophomore, Dave was selected to the all-region team, going 9-3 on the season. CSI won the region championship that year as well. Dave finished his college playing career at UNLV, leading the Rebels to the national tournament in 1988 and 1989 as a pitcher in both starting and relief roles. After playing professional baseball for two years, he worked as a graduate assistant at Southern Utah University. In 1995, Dave returned to CSI as an assistant coach for one year before taking an assistant coaching job at CEU for two years and finally an assistant position at Utah Valley State College from 2000 to 2003. During that span, Dave worked with 25 pitchers that have been drafted or signed professionally. Dave’s main responsibility at CSI is working with the Golden Eagle pitchers. Dave enjoys spending time with his wife, Shelby, and their children Abby and Cache. “I wouldn’t trade Dave for anyone. He has tremendous patience with the kids and is a great asset. If the kids put their trust in him, he will never let them down. He wears 10,000 hats and is very good at all of them.” - Boomer Walker on assistant Dave Carter. Skip Walker 35th Season Golden Eagle baseball fans know him as Skip. People who spend a lot of time around him are familiar with the phrases “jeezo-peezo,” “mentality,” and a few others too colorful to print here. His players, both former and current, can recite the five P’s: “proper planning prevents poor procedure.” But it’s the rich history Jim Walker has brought to the CSI program that defines who he is. Skip Walker is a legend at CSI. Not only was Walker inducted into the CSI Athletic Hall of Fame, but Frontier Field was officially named the James F. “Skip” Walker baseball field. In his 31 years as head coach at CSI, Walker planted the trees, built the clubhouse and played a major role in creating one of the top five JUCO fields in the country. Along the way, he has cultivated baseball players, winning 12 region titles, competing in nine JUCO World Series and winning a national championship in 1984, taking third in 1988, fourth in 1986 and fifth in 1975. Retiring from head coaching duties in 2004, Skip continues to be a part of CSI baseball, staying on as a hitting coach. Walker, 63, has been married to his wife Julene for 41 years. They have a daughter, Carly, and a son, Boomer, who is the Golden Eagles head coach. “I’m the luckiest guy in the country. I have an offensive assistant that has won more than 1100 games in his career. I’m in a great, great situation. He can now use his knowledge to help the players without worrying about all the other stuff.” Boomer Walker on having his dad and former head coach Skip Walker as an assistant. Volunteer Assistant Coach Gene Ritchie “Our program couldn’t survive without Geno. He is the first one at the field each day and the last one to leave. He is the hardest working retired person in the country.” - Coach Walker Manager Marcus Schaal Twin Falls, Idaho “Matt is learning the Eagle way and if he buys into the tradition of CSI baseball, he has a chance to be a very valuable asset to our team.” Coach Walker This or That Mild or Spicy Sweet or Salty Dreamer or Doer Worry Wart or Worry Free Spender or Saver Tent or Cabin Social Butterfly or Wallflower Night Light or Completely Dark Tanning Oil or Suncscreen Reality Show or Sitcom Up Close with Matt Before CSI Before CSI: A middle infielder that graduated from Paul Kane High School in Alberta, Matt played for Team Alberta in the Canadian summer games in 2005. Former CSI women’s basketball coach Joel Bate is in the midst of his first year at the helm of Golden Eagle Athletics. Bate, who had been teaching in the English Department since he arrived on the CSI campus in 1993, gave up teaching in the classroom to work with studentathletes and coaches on a daily basis. Bate coached at CSI from 1993 until 2000, leading the Lady Golden Eagles to the national tournament in 1999. During that span, Bate compiled a 144-78 record. He coached four NJCAA All-Americans and four NJCAA Academic All-Americans. Two players went on to play professional basketball, including Jessica Gibbs Mesna who assisted current coach Randy Rogers. In 1999, Bate earned Region 18 Coach of the Year honors. Prior to working at CSI, Bate taught and coached at Bishop Kelly High School in Boise. He taught senior English and headed the English department. In addition to his teaching duties, he coached girls’ volleyball, track and basketball, where he compiled a 114-32 record and four third-place state finishes. Bate earned his undergraduate degree in marketing at Boise State University and his master’s degree in English at the University of Idaho in 1986.
