PRESIDENTS REPORT...
- John Etcell
Well the 37th National Championship Show has come and gone.
Congratulations to all winners and thank you to all competitors.
Overall, the comments on the
Nationals were very positive.
There was some negative
feedback. Some of this was
constructive and the board will
take that constructive criticism
“on board” and use it to ensure
that the 38th Appaloosa
Championship Show will be an
even bigger and brighter event.
that the burden of service that Kiara had over the previous
twelve months (and did a credible job) will be lightened and
service levels increased.
By now most members would
be aware that next year’s show
will be held in Tamworth in the week 21 to 28 March 2010.
I also advise that there will be a second telephone line installed
in the office which will also contribute to a better member
service. Members will also be pleased to know that the
schedule of fees for 2009/2010 (effective from 1 August 2009)
remains unchanged (with the exception of the rationalisation of
registrations).
The Board held its autumn meeting on Saturday and Sunday 30
and 31 May 2009. Minutes of the meeting are on the
Association’s website. One of the important initiatives is that the
Board has given consideration to an Association Strategy. This
includes a revamp of the portfolios for the Directors. Elsewhere
in the Journal, Marcus Sweeney will elaborate on the portfolios.
One matter that was discussed at the Annual General Meeting
(at the Nationals) was the office and its limited/uncertain tenure
at the Tamworth Showground. As a result of these discussions
and with an overwhelming concurrence of members present, it
is proposed to seek/purchase an appropriate building that will
accommodate the Association’s office. I can advise at this early
stage that a number of options are being considered. I will
keep everyone informed as progress is made.
Talking about the office, I have been given the portfolio of the
office, this means that it is my responsibility to liaise with the
office and ensure that member’s needs are served effectively
and efficiently. With Vanessa’s appointment as Office Coordinator at the beginning of the year, the Board is confident
Again, with Vanessa’s appointment, the Board has transferred a
number of operational responsibilities from the Directors to the
office. These include insurance/risk management, sponsorship
and fundraising, merchandise together with rulebook and
constitutional updates. The office will also be handing all book
work and office obligations for and at the National Show.
I am also pleased to advise that both Vanessa and Kiara will be
undertaking a webpage training course at Tamworth
Community College. Once completed, the responsibility for
updating the Association’s website will be undertaken by the
office and will be undertaken on a more regular basis. It should
be understood that the updates are currently a commercial
arrangement. It should also be noted that the Amateur
Association will have its own website on the AAA website.
As members read the various reports from the Directors on
their portfolios, I suggest that any queries you may have that you
contact either myself or the respective Director.

AAA REPORTS / NEWS / FEATURES / NOTICES / YOUTH / AMATEUR
DIRECTORS REPORT
- Marcus Sweeney - A Focus on Strategy
For the last 5 years the board of directors has taken on significant operational duties to
implement the control and governance to allow the association to survive.
The AAA in that time has gone from being broke to a financial sound position.
Previous boards should be congratulated for the approach taken.
Strategic thinking
The biggest change is the responsibility for strategy and goals for each
director Each director will stop being the one and only person
responsible for the planning and execution of duties in their portfolio.
Firstly each director will document the strategy (1, 3 and 5 year), goals,
targets and required resources for the portfolio by June 30 for the
board to review. These items will then be published to the membership
to allow you to see what it is the board is striving for, who is
responsible and the progress being made. This approach will allow the
board and members to plan years in advance key items such as
breeding programs, show campaigns, amateur or youth camps and
visits, sponsorship, international programs and much more.
Sub-Committees
No one likes committees for the sake of committees, or meetings for
the sake of meetings but for too long the responsible director as been
the person shouldering all of the work load. Apart from being unfair
this is not sustainable and we end up burning our key volunteers out.
This year each director will be actively looking for members to assist
with each portfolio, to provide ideas, review options, consider impacts
on the AAA, assistance to organise. This process will balance the work
load, allow for more ideas and insight and reduce the risk associated
with any single person.
The revamped portfolios
The two key points outlined above have allowed the board to re-vamp
the portfolios The portfolios are now:
President, Vice-President, Treasurer.
These key roles will oversee all portfolios and take on duties that affect
all portfolios. This includes, the office, insurance, western breeds society,
the constitution, investments, website and IT, fundraising and grants,
legal and human resources.
Marketing & Promotions
(Magazine, advertising)
This portfolio will deal with all aspects of Marketing, Sales and

DIRECTORS REPORT
- Don Northey
To all the members who took part in the recent elections for the AAA
Ltd Board, please accept my thanks, and I would like to welcome newly
appointed Directors Sandy Tucker from South Australia and Conny Barry
representing Victoria.
At the May Board meeting, following a lot of input from
the membership, the decision to shift the National
Show away from Dubbo was ratified, the show will now
be held at the Australian Equine and Livestock Events
Centre (AELEC) in Tamworth from Sunday 21st to
Saturday 27th March 2010, with two American judges
to work both the Nationals and the Futurities.
More details will be posted on the website and in the
journal as soon as they are available. Other business was
the allocation of portfolios and I have been given the
privilege of Events Management. This portfolio includes
management of all AAA approved events, i.e. State &
National Shows. Further detail on the other Directors
Portfolios can be found elsewhere in the journal.
At the 37th National Show and Futurities held at Dubbo
this year we had a number of problems, being the
withdrawal of both US judges at the last minute for
various reasons, and the state of the arena prior to the
show starting. I would like to thank Christy Wood for
helping us out at such short notice.
To the ApHC President & International Director Frank
Larrabee and Merida McClanahan from ApHC
Marketing for arranging Christy’s travel, the AAA
Directors and all the people who have worked long
hours before and during the show and to you the
competitors and owners for supporting the show, my
thanks. The Show paid out approximately $56000.00 in
Prizemoney, Trophies, Rugs, Garlands and other equine
related goods. Please support the organisations and
individuals who have kindly sponsored the National
Championships.
It was not realised that the 37th National Show was an
important milestone in our history, it was Ralph Dunn’s
tenth year of being the National Show Announcer.
Congratulations Ralph and Thank you for so many years
of great announcing.

The rulings regarding the over 50 classes were finally put to rest with
a proposal put to the meeting that was virtually unanimous in its
acceptance. This proposal was tabled at the recent board meeting and
accepted.
We have now gone with an executive committee and delegates in
lieu of state representatives as not all states had an amateur ready to
take on a permanent position for 12 months. I would hope though,
that if a delegate has a project there will be amateurs that offer
assistance without being asked. We are all in this together and trying
to improve the amateur association for all members.
The number of amateurs competing at the National has grown since
our coming through EI and we can hopefully now go from strength
to strength in the future.
I would like to thank Megan and the committee for their efforts
through the past year and welcome the delegates and executive
committee on board for the coming year.
The efforts shown with sponsorship and product donation that was
apparent at the last National from a handful of amateurs was
outstanding and goes to show what a few can do with a little planning
so imagine our output if we ALL pulled together for a common cause.
For those that don’t know me I have been an active amateur
competitor since the inception of the group and had many years as
an amateur committee member.

REPORTS / NEWS / FEATURES / NOTICES / YOUTH / AMATEUR
A.A.A.A AGM DUBBO 2009
Meeting Opened: 6.15 pm • Attendance: As per book • Apologies: As per book
Presidents Report:
- Meaghan Hennessy addressed the meeting talked on the last years
activities and thanked the 2008 Committee. She explained the Notice of
Motion and handed over to Robyn Smith for Further Explanation
Treasurers Report:
-Treasurer absent and report not available on the night.
Notice of Motion:
In The Australian Appaloosa Association Limited Rule Book 2008 Edition,
Division 10 - Australian Appaloosa Amateur Association, 10.2 Regulations
(c), to be changed to At their AGM they must elect a President and Secretary/Treasurer, and
minimum of 2 committee.
** Robyn Smith: Explains the motion:
- She believes we are nominating people from states, who are not
working or fulfilling the delegate requirements. She believes Amateurs
would work better as committee if they can reside from anywhere in
Australia. AS long as the delegate is working as team with the committee,
that would be more beneficial to the association than being nominated
for positions because of where you live, not whether you would like the
position.
- Robyn also explained the minimum of 2 committee members. We only
need a minimum of 2 people apart from the executive – President, Vice
President, Secretary /Treasurer. This number could be as many as you like,
if the people are willing to do the job
** Deanne Warwick: Asked could Robyn rewrite the motion to say “if a
position isn’t filled, we can take another delegate to help that state”. GO
back on history offer to the state and if it can not be fulfilled
** Much Discussion went around the room of past delegates not working
and of what the roles of delegates are
** Tamara Pearson: Explained the role of the delegates. They each look after
a state, the state show, gather media materials and fundraise.
** Debbie Cotton: Asked what if you are a delegate and given another state
to look after?
** Robyn Smith: The committee would sort out any problems and if a state
is not looked after it would be a group effort to look after everyone
** Marsha Lewis: It’s up to the committee to look after the amateur and
work together as a whole.
** More discussions took place on the floor between attendees
** Notice of Motion was put to a floor Vote:
- For the Motion: 15 people
- Against the Motion: 9 people
- Motion Carried and passed by the Amateur Floor
ALL POSITIONS DECLARED VACANT and Elections for Committee
** John Etcell occupied the chair for elections and called for stations to be filled.
He addressed the meeting remarking that the AAA is looking ahead and thanks
the past committee

New Committee takes the floor:
General Business:
**Marsha Lewis takes the floor as President, greeted the floor and
congratulated the new 2009 AAAA committee. She asks for any general
business.
Amateur 50 yrs and Over
** Marsha Lewis opened to discussion. Everyone was under the understanding
50 and Over was to go ahead last season for State and National Shows. It was
promoted for the older riders. This division was popular in America and in the
AQHA and the Amateurs would like it bought back in. If we look at the
Current 2009 Nationals program the classes are basically all Amateurs. We
need to approach the board yet again to make this a recognized event.
REPORTS / NEWS / FEATURES / NOTICES / YOUTH / AMATEUR
**Meaghan Hennessey: The boards had previously passed Amateur 50 and
Over in their original proposed program at the May Board meeting Meaghan
attended as President. It was in the programmed and discussed it would go
ahead
** John Etcell: Talked to Meaghan on the floor. This was in the original program
as the board had considered the event. It was put to a board vote in December
and the decision was to make it an Open, not Amateur Event.
**Carolyn Allen: Recited the rules of the 50 an d over in to program; a non
professional
** John Etcell: Replied with there is no such thing as a non professional. If we
proposed this to the board they would discuss it.
**Gillian Allen: Will there be a hi point for this past season, as she had been out
competing in Amateur select at AQHA shows to gain point.
**Tamara Pearson: Responded to Gillian that no there would not be a high
point as the events had not run properly. For example VIC state ran as 45 and
Over, NSW did not have a state show. Also that in the original proposal 50 and
Over was only to be at State and National Shows. Regional events were not
included.
**Gillian Allen: Asked then why Amateurs were able to get Select marked on
their membership cards to go out and show.
**John Etcell: Explained that the 50 and Over sticker was to confirm your age
if you wished to show in open company. To show what you would be eligible
for. It was not to do with the Appaloosa 50 and over.
**Bob Scott: Asked about AQHA Select Rules. You cannot show in other events
was the main question
**Deanne Warwick: explained the rules. Stating that in the AQHA if you ride
Select in HUS you cannot ride in another HUS event, although you can go in
another division Western Pleasure.
**Debbie Cotton: Asked if we would follow the same rules as the AQHA
**Marsha Lewis: A floor vote was conducted: That 50 and Over become and
Amateur event.
- Vote For 25, Vote against 0 – Unanimous decision made to propose to the
board
**Marsha Lewis: Asked the floor could we all start think about class guidelines
and a proposal phrase for the board.
** Debbie Cotton: Do we also look at regional shows. For those shows with a
big program do they have to run these events?
** Marsha Lewis: No these events can be run by the regional clubs at their
choice.
**Debbie Pearson: What events are these being restricted to? It is hard to
restrict events as people are more inclined to enter if the events are available.
**Barbara Etcell: Place recognized events in the proposal and make it up to the
show committee what events they hold.
**Amateur proposal decided:
That Amateur 50 and Over become a recognized division of the
Australian Appaloosa Amateur Association, commencing August 1st 2009.These
Amateur 50 and Over classes to be recognized Amateur events. These Amateur
50 and Over Events to be held at Regional, State, National level or any other
show recognized by the Australian Appaloosa Association. All scores to be
recorded resulting in an End of Year Hi Point and ROAs. The AAA rule book to
be amended accordingly.
Amateur ROA Awards
** Deanne Warwick spoke to the floor about how the AQHA run their ROA
awards and speaks that it would be great of we could look at the system and
change them so that Amateur horses get recognized as well as the Amateur.
** Marsha Lewis clarifies the point with the floor, that the horse gets recognized
as an Amateur horse, not just the rider. This could be a great Selling point for
the horses.
** Bob Scott: Explains that people already know the horses. Why change what
is working.
**Deanne Warwick: speaks about the ROAs being a promotion of the horse.
She is not asking for an immediate response but would like the Amateur
committee to look into it as a future step of the Association
**John Etcell: Asks Deanne to start a discussion paper on the topic and submit
it to the association in the Appaloosa Magazine. He also said it could be put on
the website for discussion as well
Amateur Activities:
**Tamara Pearson: Bingo will be held Monday night of the National Show in the
Expo centre. Asks floor if anyone bought prizes to please put them on the table
and please all attend.
** Meaghan Hennessy: Amateur and Youth Teams challenge. Anyone who wants
to nominate it’s a $5 dollar entry fee and teams will be drawn out of a hat.
Scores board down by the arena. Please everyone come and join in.
Meeting closed at 7.30pm
~ AMATEUR PROFILE ~
Marsha Lewis F3567
I now reside in the Hawkesbury in a semi rural
area nestled between the bustle of Windsor and
the wilds of the hills towards Dural. The lots are
mostly 5 acres with the area now becoming big
homes in large gardens.
My riding career really started at the age of 13 once dad
decided it was cheaper for me to have a horse of my own
than keep hiring them from the local riding school in Brightle-sands. My first pony an aged gelding being what was then

called a skewbald so you could say I was on my way to the
coloured world early. Riding was bareback for the first 12
months of my horse ownership with a bridle being handed
down from an uncle with racehorses and a cast off rug that
he got lost in, but I was in seventh heaven. My dad grew up
in racing stables so my old pony had to be cared for like he
was going to the track or he was going back. This led to
some great lengthy discussions once I started Pony Club
with the instructress Glady Bunsworth teach me one way
and dad the other. I competed in the local gymkhanas but
as I had a coloured horse things were a little difficult so I
thought the sporting was a fairer deal as first past the post
did the trick.
Several horses later on I came into the Appaloosa world by
chance and met up with an old pony club friend Kathy
Bingham (Kate Harris) who with her family were busy
running the Sydney Regional Appaloosa club. I jumped in
boots and all, enjoying the pleasant atmosphere of western
showing compared to the hack ring and immediately
became a committee member serving in many and varied
roles over my many years with the club. The association with
SRAC put me in touch with another very staunch supporter
of the Appaloosa World, Dianne Copp and her dad Cecil. It
was these two that introduced me to my first National show
in 1982 and I haven’t missed on since.
Backed by The Copps and Binghams with the SRAC as my
sponsor I entered the Appaloosa Queen quest in 1983
which was the best time as I got to ride Tonga Royal Mr
Sunday for my riding tests thankfully loan to me by the
McAuliffes. What a mighty horse. To my surprise I was
crowned Australian appaloosa queen and represented our
association at the American and Canadian Nationals. This
was one of the proudest moments in my life.
I am basically an English event gal but with the help of a few
wonderful Appys I have owned my western is improving
and I now enjoy trail, have had a go at reining and would
love to do a good western riding pattern as I think this is my
favourite event.
Horses in general are my passion and I think they always will
be but I do dabble in patchwork, sewing in general and crafty
things. My cat family keep me busy with my indoor Burans
and my barn cats the last surviving canine ‘Sharie’ is greatly
outnumbered.
My most memorable horse is Meg (Tyson’s Little Dear) who
gave me Gest a Celebrity. My showing highs were
unmatched by any other horse I have owned and she was
my saddest moment when I lost her due to foaling
complications. The success of the partnership between me
and this horse was only achieved with the always supportive
help from my husband Ray and our trainer Wayne Judge.
Horses are the most grounding thing in ones life, they take
you as you are, they are the most forgiving creatures still
trying there best after you have lost the plot, they take the
blame when things go wrong even though you know it was
really your mistake. The person that can train and achieve
great things in the equine world without having to resort to
cruelty or gadgets gets my vote as the best horseman
anyone can know and I can only dream that if I keep learning
and practicing then one day I may be able to call myself a
true horsewoman.
This is a small look into my life with my equine friends I hope
you enjoyed my tale and I would like to think it may
encourage someone just starting out that the life with your
Appy companions can be a life long union.

The Participation Program, which rewards youth for pursuing
excellence in their chosen field of equine events.
The AAYA donated funds to purchase some AAA merchandise for
Victorian fire victim Madeline Busttili. Madeline youth members hope to
see you back in competition soon.
At the recent AAYA AGM the youth decided on selecting a new youth
logo. The new logo incorporates much of the history of the previous one
while bringing a new twist. There are two examples up for selection.
These have been supplied by Katbellamar Designs.
GET YOUR FORMS IN TO THE OFFICE. The season was from the 1st of
August 2008- till 1st of August 2009. I will give you till the 31st of August
to have your forms at the AAA office. So if you have forgotten to have

NZ last indicated that they would discuss the program at their next
meeting. As per email with international Director K Peatey, NZ has such
low numbers of youth are currently unable to take up the offer. There is
a possibility of a Youth representative attending the NZ National in 2010.
The International Director is to confirm.
The running of camps and clinic for youth to learn from experts in the
equine field about their chosen events and general equine husbandry.
AAYA Youth Camp is an initiative to encourage, support & promote Youth
development within the Australian Appaloosa Association & the general
equine industry. The aim is to encourage Regional Club Affiliates to hold
one AAYA Youth Camp in each state, each year. AAA youth are given
preference for placement, but ALL youth are encouraged to participate.
Applications to hold an AAYA Youth Camp are submitted by tender, each
state is allocated a maximum of one Camp per year. Any Regional Club
Affiliate can tender to hold a Camp in its own state. Camps must be held
during school holidays or on a long weekend in that state. Further details
will be advertised as the organisation of each event proceeds.
The Out-Reach Program for youth based in remote areas that are
generally unable to attend events such as State Championships or the
National Show. They would be helped with travel, accommodation,
training and free entry to events. This program has not been implemented
yet, while some minimal interest has been received, finances are limited
for this expenditure.
The International Youth Exchange Program for our senior youth to
compete in the USA National Show.
Thank you to the four senior youth who applied for the program for the
2009 season. Unfortunately the very short time frame the ApHC had
given us and the lack of clear information in certain areas of the trip
concerned the board. So it was with the best interest of the youth that
the board agreed to postpone the program until the 2010 season. AAYA
camps will become a part of the selection process.
Current Youth News
Congratulations to our National Show Youth competitors and those that
have achieved great success in the open fields of competition. We should
be very proud of the amazing abilities of our youth.

FAILURE OF
PASSIVE
TRANSFER
O
VERVIEW
Newborn foals are born
with virtually no infectionfighting antibodies. Foals
obtain these antibodies, also referred to
as immunoglobulins, from their dam’s
colostrum—a special type of milk that is
produced by the mare during the last
one or two weeks of gestation. Most
foals nurse from their dams and obtain
at least 1 liter of good-quality, antibodyrich colostrum within the first eight
hours of life. This process by which
mares pass antibodies on to their foals
via the colostrum is referred to as passive
transfer of immunity. When foals don’t
get any or enough of these important
antibodies, it is called failure of passive
transfer. In addition to antibodies, the
caloriedense colostrum also contains
growth factors and white blood cells and
possesses laxative properties to help the
foal pass the meconium (first feces).
It is imperative that foals ingest and
absorb colostrum within the first few
hours of life because foals are only able
to absorb antibodies during the first 1824 hours of life. Beyond one day of life,
the specialized cells that line the foal’s
gastrointestinal tract and assist in
absorbing the life-saving antibodies
cease to function.
Studies have shown that absorption of
maternal antibodies from colostrum is
greatest within 6-8 hours of birth. Since
the average foal has a suckling reflex
within 2-20 minutes of birth, can stand
within one hour, and can nurse from its

mother within two hours, this is
normally not a concern. In fact, it is
currently estimated that only 10-20% of
newborn foals are diagnosed with failure
of passive transfer.
protect the foal can result in failure of
passive transfer. This occurs if a mare is
not properly vaccinated or is moved to a
new environment too close to the time
of foaling.
Depending on both the amount of
colostrum ingested and the quality of
the dam’s colostrum, failure of passive
transfer can be either complete or
partial. Foals with either complete or
partial failure of passive transfer are atrisk for developing serious medical
conditions such as pneumonia, diarrhea,
and joint infections.
■ Foals that do nurse, but are unable to
absorb the antibodies from the
colostrums, can also have failure of
passive transfer.
CAUSES
There are numerous causes of failure of
passive transfer. Some of the most
common include:
■ Mares that drip or run milk for
several hours prior to parturition. These
mares are actually losing the antibodyrich colostrum that foals require to
survive.
■ Orphaned or rejected foals and foals
that are unable to rise and nurse (due to
dysmaturity, prematurity, postmaturity,
weakness, or limb deformities, for
example) all lose the opportunity to
ingest the much-needed colostrum from
their dams.
■ Mares that have poor-quality
colostrum that does not contain the type
or amount of antibodies needed to
14 JULY/AUGUST 2009 • The National Appaloosa Journal
DIAGNOSIS
To diagnose failure of passive transfer a
veterinarian performs a physical
examination on the neonate and takes a
blood sample to measure the foal’s
antibody levels. The specific antibody
measured is immunoglobulin G (IgG).
Foals with IgG levels less than 200
mg/dl are diagnosed with complete
failure of passive transfer, whereas IgG
levels between 200 and 800 mg/dl is
considered a partial failure of passive
transfer. Normal foals generally have
IgG levels between 1,000 and 2,000
mg/dl. There are several commercial test
kits that can be used on the farm to
measure foal IgG levels to diagnose
failure of passive transfer. In general,
these tests provide relatively reliable
results in approximately 10 minutes.
Results are not quantitative (i.e., the test
do not give the exact mg/dl of IgG), but
simply indicate if the foal’s IgG levels
are above or below a certain cut-off
value.
To obtain an exact value, the sample
needs to be sent to a laboratory for
REPORTS / NEWS / FEATURES / NOTICES / YOUTH / AMATEUR
analysis, which will take approximately
24 hours. Obviously, this is not a
practical option for foals that are in dire
need of colostrum.
TREATMENT
Foals diagnosed with either complete or
partial failure of passive transfer require
an alternate source of immunoglobulins.
There are three main ways to achieve
this goal. First, foals can be administered
fresh or frozen colostrum. For example,
if the mare is leaking colostrum prior to
parturition, the colostrum can be
stripped from the mare and frozen until
the foal is born. Upon the arrival of the
foal, the frozen colostrum can be thawed
(not in a micro- wave!) and immediately
bottle fed to the foal. Alternatively, if
another more on the farm lost her foal
during parturition, the colostrum from
that mare can be stripped and frozen for
future use. Second, dried IgG products
are available that can be mixed with
water and bottlefed to the colostrumdeprived foal.
These products are stable at room
temperature and have a longer shelf-life
than fresh or frozen colostrum, but they
are expensive and have variable
absorption. That is, their efficacy is
somewhat questionable. Finally, equine
plasma high in IgG can be administered
intravenously. This option is used for
foals that: have very low IgG levels (less
than 200 mg/dl); are too old to absorb
orally administered immunoglobulins;
or have abnormal gastrointestinal
function that would preclude the
absorption of the immunoglobulins.
Post-supplement testing of blood IgG
levels is recommended.
PROGNOSIS
The prognosis for foals diagnosed with
failure of passive transfer is variable. Not
all foals with failure of passive transfer
will become sick, and not all foals that
achieved passive transfer of immunity
are guaranteed to be healthy.
Nonetheless, almost all foals that
develop life-threatening infections have
at least partial failure of passive transfer.
Therefore, it is imperative that foals
with failure of passive transfer are
diagnosed and treated as soon as
possible.
PREVENTION
The most important means of
preventing FTP is to ensure the foal
stands and nurses shortly after birth.
This is most successfully achieved on
farms that have birth attendants that can
witness the birth and assist the mare and
foal when necessary.
Other important factors that can help
minimize failure of passive transfer and
post-natal infections is to maintain a
clean foaling environment (including
the mare), to properly vaccinate the
mare (e.g., according to the AAEP
vaccination guidelines), and to keep the
mare in one environment (not move her)
within the last month of gestation.
This will ensure that the mare has had
sufficient time to develop antibodies
specific to the types of microorganisms
that are present in the environment in
which the foal will be born.

37th National Appaloosa Show
2009 saw the 37th running of the National Appaloosa Championships in Dubbo, NSW.
135 horses were entered in an attempt to claim part of the $46,000 in
prize money on offer. Members came from as far west as South
Australian and as far south as Tasmania, of course we cannot forget the
ever faithful contingents from Queensland, Victoria and New South
Wales. Many new faces attended the Show this year, even a couple of
2nd generation Appaloosa breeders were spotted amongst the
competitors.
Activities started on Saturday with a Youth Judging Clinic, run by the
AAYA, to help our Youth to understand what it is like on the other side.
The Youth thoroughly enjoyed being “Judge” for a couple of hours.
Following the Judging Clinic, Appaloosa Horse Club President, Mr
Frank Larrabee, kindly offered his wisdom to our members with a
Hunter In Hand Clinic, providing tips on what a Judge is looking for
and how to best show your horse in this class. Everyone that either
participated with their horse or just watch from the stands, were
extremely grateful to Frank for conducting this clinic.
Sunday and it was show time. English day and that means Dressage first
up. This year the Association sponsored a beautiful English Horse Head
Trophy for the Highest Dressage Score, which was won by TS Passing
Breeze, owned and ridden by Emily Hill. A quick gear change and was
time for the Hack Classes. Some very tough competition was over come
by Hot Roddin Classic Owned by Deanne Warwick/Ridden by Tamara
Pearson to take out Grand Champion Hack. Another quick change, and
was off to the Indoor Arena for the Hunter In Hand Classes. If there is
one event that continues to grow, it is Hunter In Hand, with the largest
class being the Gelding Class with 18 Entrants.
Day 2, Hunter Day, which included the $1000 Hunter Under Saddle
Feature, this year won by GK Maximum Skip and his owner/rider Guy
Henderson. This year we reintroduced Hunter Hack Classes and were
very well received by those that entered and those that were watching
intently from the Stands, one addition to these classes was the Hunt Seat
Equitation Over fences Class, I’m sure Shout The Bar (Andy), Owned
By Joanne Green/Ridden by Gina Eddie, is still waiting for the real
jumps to come out!
Day 3 began with the $1000 Open Halter Feature, which was taken out
by Déjà Vu owned by Karen and Samantha Daley/Shown by Samantha
Daley. The day continued with the Futurities, although numbers were
down this year, the quality of horses lining up was not. PS Ideal
Reflection Owned by Angela Seguna/Ridden by Raelene Gilboy, was
outstanding to win all three Ridden 2yo Futurities. And just when we
thought the Legend himself had been dethroned, Mega Dream (imp)
was once again crowned High Point Futurity Sire for 2009.
Showmanship classes closed out Day 3, with our Amateurs and Youth
Competitors showing the Judge some very polished performances.
When the program was set I don’t think that many people were looking
forward to Day 4, Trail Day. Some very promising youngsters showed
their talents in the Yearling Led Trail, which was taken out by Stillwaters
So Delicious, Owned by Tracey and Peter Wilson/Shown by Peter
Wilson. There were some very nice Trail patterns completed during the
day, showing that our horses are up there with the best of them. At the
completion of the day’s competition GK Maximum Skip had won his
second feature event, the $1000 Open Trail Feature, and they thought
they were having a great show then!
Competitors set off quickly to put horses away and get ready for the
Annual General Meeting, Dinner and Presentation Evening. Everyone
that attended the Dinner and Presentations enjoyed catching up away
from the Show Pen and congratulating the 2007/2008 State High Point
winners and 2009 Inductees to the Hall of Fame.
Another early start for Halter day, which generally means that riders can
have a day or at least half a day off, but this year there were some
beautifully presented riders being shown in the Halter Classes. The Most
Colourful at Halter again saw excellent numbers with 19 entries, which
saw Ellsan Ginger Meg’s Dream, owned by Debera and Michael Ebbett
/Shown by Debera Ebbett, judged the winner. Now it was time for the
one that everyone had been waiting for, Supreme Halter Horse, which
was taken out by Déjà Vu. After a few more classes to see who would
take out the Get of Sire and Produce of Dam Classes it was time for a
bit of fun with the reintroduced Keyhole and Barrel Race events. There
was a lot of cheering coming from a small crowd that came down to
watch the Amateurs and Youth strut their stuff.
Amateur Halter day arrived and Supreme Amateur Exhibit capped off
some beautifully presented horses with Déjà Vu taking out the prize,
making it a Supreme Double for the Daley Family, with this beautiful
Stud Colt claiming both Awards for 2009.
Yearling and 2yo Lungeline continued Day 6, along with the Tiny Tots,
who were all dressed to perfection with five little Princesses and one little
Prince, who were delighted with their very large gift bags. Day 6 was
completed with the Western Pleasure events and the Final Events for the
day being the $500 Ivy Western Wear and Saddlery Youth Western
Pleasure Feature being won by GK Little Skip Jack, Owned/Ridden by
Blayze Williams, the $500 Amateur Western Pleasure Feature going to
Every Kid’s Dream, owned/Ridden by Anne Brooksbank and finally the
$1000 Kentucky Equine Research Champagne Western Pleasure taken
out by GK Maximum Skip, giving ‘Max’ 3 wins from 4 Feature events for
the Show.
The final Day saw Western Equitation, Western Horsemanship,
Western Riding and Reining close out the Show. The Presentations of
the High Point Awards followed the last class with the Wayne Judge
Memorial Overall High Point Performance Horse going to GK
Maximum Skip who also took out 1st place in the Super Horse Award.
The Super Horse Award and High Point Trainer of the Show were new
categories this year and the High Point Trainer was won by Raelene
Gilboy and Runner Up was awarded to Allan Briskey.
Congratulations to all winners and place getters and a big thank you
especially our Sponsors, Show Team, every body gave a helping hand and
of course the competitors with out you the show would not be possible.
